6 . Just the other day, I was in a bookshop and found a book named How to Make Friends with Foreigners. Naturally, as a foreigner who has been living in China for a year, I was curious to see what kind of advice a Chinese writer was giving on this matter.
One piece of advice really caught my attention and, I must say, made me feel quite annoyed. In the writer’s opinion, foreigners are an “opportunity” to improve your oral English; whenever you see a foreigner, you should practise speaking English with him or her. The writer goes on to say that if the foreigner doesn’t want to answer your questions, then he or she is a rude person who you wouldn’t want to spend time with anyway. I think this advice is not only incorrect, but also potentially (潜在的) damaging to the relations between Chinese and foreigners in China.
Like most other “Lao Wai” living in China, I know how lonely one can sometimes feel living within a culture far removed from our own familiar ways. However, most of the time this cultural isolation (孤独) is something I simply accept as part of being here. So far my time in China has been very rewarding. I have improved my Chinese language skills, learned about one of the most swiftly developing countries in the world today and made some very close Chinese friends.
Unfortunately, I have also come across many Chinese people who view me purely as an “opportunity” to improve their oral English under the guise (伪装) of making friends. I have experienced the situation where people followed me from town to my college flat and then harassed (骚扰) me to teach them English or practise English with them. I have had complete strangers throwing articles or speeches in my face, insisting that I help them with the English translation. I have had people asking me to help with immigration applications to other countries. All of these people claimed at the time that what they mainly wanted was to make friends with me. There was even one person at the weekly English Corner that I run at college who, after asking me non-stop questions for half an hour, became very angry when I politely asked him to give other people a chance to speak. He puffed himself up like a peacock and informed me that he was simply trying to be my friend.
He may well have thought he was trying to be my friend, but it’s absolutely not a polite way to build friendships by pestering another person. Friendship for a lot of westerners is about spending time with someone whose company you genuinely (真正的) enjoy. It’s not about opportunities or personal advantages. The Chinese friends I have made while living here have been genuine friends to me; we enjoy each other’s company for its own sake. In this way, we’ve not only learned a good deal about each other’s culture but also about each other as individuals.
So if there is any advice to give on making and keeping friendships with foreigners, I would say that it is this: Treat foreigners as people, not opportunities. Expect to make friendships gradually, over a period of time, not instantly. Don’t burden foreigners with lots and lots of different questions. At times, this approach appears confusing and unnatural.
Finally, I would suggest that if you really want to make friends with a foreigner, then you do so because you are genuinely interested in the person. We all know that true friendships stand the test of time. If your only reason for becoming friends with a foreigner is to improve your English, then you will probably find that you don’t have a foreign friend for long!

7 . After I entered high school, I attended advanced classes and I had a teacher who made me think I was stupid.
In my freshman year, I had trouble writing essays for that teacher. She was strict. She made fun of me, sometimes in front of the class. It didn’t help that my friend was a genius (天才) who would text me the night before our essay was due (到期) and ask, “ What is the essay about again?” She would receive a 97 and I would receive an 80 even though I had revised (修正) and edited that piece for two weeks. Once I got a 97 on a project that took me two and a half weeks to complete, and I was asked how much help my mom had given to me. In the second grade, I had trouble with my essay writing once again. Besides, I had problems in Maths even though I understood the concepts.
Now I am in a new school and taking many subjects and I am doing well. Actually in the beginning, I was nervous. I thought I would fail all of my classes because my previous teachers had failed me and made me ashamed to try. I thought I was just going to get another 80 on an essay. It is hard indeed. They are fast-paced courses and it isn’t easy to keep up with all the readings and when my next lab will be. But with so much adjustment (调整) to the stress, I have become confident. Now I know how much time I need to perfect that essay, and when to set aside time to meet with my tutor (老师) before my next biology exam.
I am writing this blog to the kids that have gotten lost in the mix---any adjusting freshmen, any lost kids in advanced classes, and the hidden genius in everyone. I went through two years in high school, thinking I was a little slower than the other kids in advanced classes. But in this new environment, with the experience I have received and my new-found confidence, I can say, “I’m Anne Hilker and I am smart!” We are all smart.

8 . In Yu Chenrui’s creations, wood comes alive. Yu is an automata (机械人偶) maker. Wooden figures in his creations move as if by magic.
Automata look like humans or animals and give the illusion (错觉) of being able to move on their own. The automata have its origins in ancient Greece. Indeed, the name comes from the Greek word automatos, meaning “moves on its own”. Automata were the first complex machines produced by man, and the mechanical principles haven’t changed for thousands of years.
Interested in handicrafts as a boy, Yu first encountered automata designed by Kazuaki at an exhibition in 2015 when he studied at college. “It was like meeting a like-minded friend,” Yu says. As an art and design major, he began to learn the craft by himself and, with the support of his tutor Lu Ying, he kept studying and examining automata at school. Now the hobby has become a career.
When he graduated in 2016, Yu got a job at an advertising agency in Beijing. While working as a designer, Yu kept exploring and advancing his skills in wood carving. Despite the job’s good salary, it was not enough to compensate for (补偿) not following his true passion. Finally, in 2018, Yu quit his job and returned to his hometown Chengdu to open his automata workshop.
Many of Yu’s creations are built with a source of wisdom, a sense of humor and are inspired by observations of real life. Woodcutter and Worm is inspired by his own experience of finding a wormhole while he was cutting wood. The piece shows a creature with its eyes wide open the moment the log (木头) in which it lives is being cut in two.
Yu knows that there are many more creative ideas waiting to be expressed. “It feels quite good to be fully devoted to automata creation and I am still searching for myself,” Yu said.

9 . I am from Athens, Greece, and am currently a PhD law student at the University of Geneva (UNIGE). I once applied for an exchange semester in UNIGE in 2010. Completely satisfied with my short-term exchange experience, I decided to return and further advance my legal studies here.
Geneva offers an ideal (理想的) multicultural environment. Socialising with my international classmates was quite easy at the start, and I soon expanded my social network by joining several student groups that often organise activities! However, socialising with the local students seemed to be more difficult, perhaps because of the “temporary” status of the international students. As for my compatriots (同胞), Greeks, I met only a few, so there were not many chances to communicate in Greek. As a matter of fact, this turned out to be a plus, because I managed to significantly improve my skills in French and English.
UNIGE has a very efficient administration structure that goes beyond the enrolment (登记入学) procedure. The capable staff were very helpful with official documents, the residence permit and other procedural issues. In advance of my arrival, they had provided me with practical information and guidance, including lists of student residences and particular rooms I could rent. Upon arrival, we were properly guided through well-organised orientation days (迎新日), informative meetings, and advanced language courses.
As I progressed with my studies, I greatly appreciated courses and classes being interactive and not purely theoretical, with opportunities for written essay assignments, educational trips and conferences. The majority of courses were taught in French while only a few were offered in English. The professors were highly respected in their field.
I would describe Geneva as a relatively small “metropolis” — an international business centre, where so many global organisations operate. Yet, despite all this business activity, Geneva remains human‑scaled and friendly to its inhabitants (居民) who, any time and only by travelling a short distance, may easily benefit from calm open areas and the incomparable lakefront. The quality of life and the vast professional and academic activities attract a great number of foreigners who come for work or studies. Personally, I had the opportunity to gain a lot of professional experience in my area of interest.

10 . Towards the end of high school, one of my best friends and I had a fight. She told me I had no common sense, I replied that she was childish, and in a matter of minutes, we went from inseparable to very separate.
We didn’t speak for most of our senior year. We both found other friends, avoiding each other like the plague (瘟疫). A few months after graduation, I learned that she was having some trouble. I sent her a message: “I’m still here, if you ever need me.” She replied shortly after. We reunited, and thus ended our friendship break.
Friendship breakups aren’t all that uncommon. People grow apart and fight. But friendship breaks are a different story. While they’re often healthy, sometimes, they’re also tough to control. Sometimes, like in my case, they happen suddenly and with zero intentions to reunite. In other situations, they’re more of a slow burn.
Katie, 33, says she took a break from her best college friend after a few tense exchanges, like when the friend pressured Katie—then a graduate student on a tight budget—to go on an international trip. “We’d probably been friends for ten years at the time of the break,” Katie says. “I felt that the relationship had stopped being enjoyable.” For four years, she and her friend sent only the occasional text messages. Then, a year and a half ago, the two women happened to move to the same town. “She asked whether I would like to meet,” Katie says, “and we took it slowly, speaking on the phone and going for lunches and a few nights out.”
Once you reconnect, you may find that your friendship is totally different, for better or for worse. “A friendship break allows both friends to reassess the situation and see if they miss each other during the cooling-off period,” says sociologist Jan Yager. “When they do reconnect, it might be with a new perspective.”
