2 . A few years ago, I took a sightseeing trip to Washington D. C.. I saw many of our nation’s treasures, and I also saw a lot of unfortunate people like beggars and homeless folks in the streets.

Standing outside the Ronald Reagan Center, I heard a voice say, "Can you help me?" When I turned around, I saw an elderly blind woman with her hand extended. In a natural reaction, I reached into my pocket, pulled out all of my loose change and placed it in her hand. I didn’t even look at her. I was annoyed at being bothered by a beggar.

But the blind woman smiled and said, "I don’t want your money. I just need help finding the post office."

Immediately, I realized what I had done. I acted with prejudice—I judged a person simply for what I thought she was.

The thing I had forgotten about myself is that I am an immigrant. I left Honduras and arrived in America at the age of 15. Through the years, I have been a dishwasher, cashier, mechanic and pizza delivery driver among many other jobs, and finally I became a network engineer.

In my own life, I have experienced many open acts of prejudice. I remember a time, at age 17—I was a busboy, and I heard a father tell his little boy that if he did not do well at school, he would end up like me.

But now, living in my American middle-class lifestyle, it is too easy to forget my past, to forget who I am and where I have been, and to lose sight of where I want to be going. That blind woman on the street of Washington D. C. cured me of my blindness. She reminded me to always keep my eyes and heart open.

1. When the author came to America at first________.
A.he usually did some work with a little payment.B.he used to beg for some money on the street.
C.he lived a comfortable life as a network engineer.D.he was respected by others all the time.
2. According to the passage, what did the author regret?
A.That he gave all his change to the blind woman.
B.That he came to Washington D.
C.That he didn’t tell the woman the way to the post office.
D.The way he treated the blind woman.
3. The father mentioned in the passage wanted ________.
A.to encourage his son to make a living by himselfB.his son to become a busboy in the future
C.his son to work harder at schoolD.to remind his son to depend on himself at school
4. We can infer all of the following statements from the passage EXCEPT________.
A.He disliked being bothered by beggars.
B.He once suffered a lot.
C.The blind woman didn’t beg for money at that time.
D.He was happy to give away his money to beggars.

3 . I have never understood why we keep a garden and why years ago when I bought my first house, I started digging up a small land for vegetables before doing anything else. It is so easy and cheap to buy carrots; why raise them? When April comes, I always find myself looking at that miserable land, resolving not to plant it again. But unavoidably a morning arrives when, just as I am awakening, a refreshing scent, as if from the very center of this planet, comes through the window. And the sun suddenly, seems to have a different, deeper yellow in its light on the carpet.

It is not only pleasure sending me back to stare at that plot of soil, it is real conflict. The question is the same each year—what method should we use? The last few years we put black plastic between the rows, and it worked perfectly. But plastic looks so industrial, so unromantic, that I have gradually moved over to hay. We cut a lot of hay and it does improve the soil. Besides, it looks lovely and comes to us free.

The attractions of gardening, I think, at least for some gardeners, are moral. Whenever life seems pointless and difficult to grasp, you can always get out in the garden and get something done. Also, your parental instinct comes into play because helpless living things are depending on you, requiring training and protection from enemies. In some cases, as with beans and cucumbers, your children—as it were, begin to turn upon on you in great numbers, growing more and more each morning and threatening to follow you into the house.

1. What can we infer about the author from the first paragraph?
A.He always likes buying carrots.B.He always makes decisions in April.
C.He takes good care of the small land.D.He enjoys the garden in spring.
2. What drove the author to abandon plastic?
A.High price.B.Environmental concern.
C.Poor function.D.Personal preference.
3. Why does the author say the attractions of gardening are moral?
A.Gardening requires wisdom.B.Gardening offers moral advice.
C.Gardening improves parenting.D.Gardening brings spiritual content.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.To Garden or NotB.What I Garden for
C.How to GardenD.Wisdom from Gardens

4 . After graduating from high school in 2019, with only a few simple tools and no prior construction experience, Grankvist set out into the vast Swedish wilderness to realize his dream of building a secluded log cabin by hand- all by himself.

With no construction crew or complex machinery, Grankvist chopped down trees, built a stone foundation, and stacked logs on top of one another to create his humble off-the-grid (脱离电网的) home. The entire project is documented on Grankvist's YouTube channel, where viewers can find several videos of his journey-from braving the Swedish winter to learning how to throw axes.

I must admit that when I first heard about Grankvist's project, my initial thought was: “But what about college?” Did this man have any long term plans for his future that didn't involve building a log cabin? What about building a steady career path? Did he consider constructing a reliable retirement fund?

But as these questions were running through my mind, another one struck me: “Why does it matter?”

Why do we so often measure success by amount of schooling or the so-called longevity of a stable career path? If building a log cabin alone in the middle of a Swedish forest will make you happy, then why wouldn't you pursue that instead of a stable job, even if it might mean you make less money in the long run? Who's telling you that pursuing such a project isn't the “right” choice?

I know it's easy to talk a big game. it's not as easy to drop out of school and pursue your wildest fantasy full-time. What matters is that you never lose sight of what is truly important to you and where your passions lie, even if you can't put everything else on hold. So, in the midst of the rat race, tree by tree, don't forget to build your log cabin.

1. What CAN’T viewers find on Grankvist's YouTube channel?
A.He built a stone foundation.B.He used complex machines.
C.He faced up to the harsh winter.D.He learned to how to use axes.
2. Why is the story of Grankvist mentioned?
A.To criticize the traditional high school classroom teaching.
B.To explain the fantastic project made by Grankvist.
C.To think highly of the boy for his cleverness.
D.To lead up to the topic of what truly matters in life.
3. Which sentence below can show the author's supportive attitude to Grankist's cabin-building experience?
A.Did this man have any long-term plans for his future that didn't involve building a log cabin?
B.Did he consider constructing a reliable retirement fund?
C.What about building a steady career path?
D.Who's telling you that pursuing such a project isn't the “right” choice?
4. What message does the author want to convey?
A.Have long-term aims for our future.B.Go off the grid and build your “log cabin”.
C.Never talk a big game.D.Make a balance between your passion and career.

9 . As my husband and I drove down a country road, we passed a fire station with a sign that read, "Are you ready for the next storm?” Our area had just been in the path of Hurricane Irma, causing downed trees and outages. We were stuck in the dark and cut off from the outside world.

We have had our share of storms in the past--a snowstorm and other heavy snows that knocked down trees, sometimes up to a week at a time. Those days in a cold house weren't fun, but we learned so much from those early storms, things that made later storms easier to bear.

Now we have stored up flashlights, lanterns and candles. We bought a battery-operated radio to keep up with the news. We stocked up on batteries so that we'd have plenty for extended power failures. We make sure our grill(烤架) is ready and its tank is full, and we purchase food that can be easily prepared and then cooked or heated on the grill. And we don't forget to buy emergency chocolate! We have book lights to read in the dark. We keep our car gas tanks full and have emergency cash on hand.

We're ready for the next storm, but we wouldn't have learned to do all those things if we hadn't encountered a storm in the past. The same is true spiritually. Those little storms in our lives are never fun, but they prepare us for the big storms--the big trials--that will come our way, They can teach us some valuable lessons.

Are you ready for the next storm? Now is the time to get ready. . . not when the storm arrives.

3. What does the author think of experiencing the past storms?
A.It was rewarding.
B.It was annoying.
C.It was thrilling.
D.It was frightening.
4. What can we learn from the author's story?
