1 . Our bachelor uncle lived with us, who loved hunting and fishing; and it was one of the pleasures of our young life to go fishing with him.

I remember my first fishing experience as if it happened yesterday. I was very excited when I received that first fishing pole from my uncle's hand, and went fishing with him. It was a still, sweet day of early summer; the leaves seemed greener, the flowers brighter, the birds merrier, than ever before.

My uncle considerately placed me at the most favorable point. I threw out my line as I had so often seen others, and waited anxiously for a bite, moving the bait (鱼饵) in rapid movement on the surface of the water just like the jumps of a frog. Nothing came of it. "Try again," said my uncle. Suddenly the bait sank out of sight. "Now for it," thought I, "here is a fish at last."

I made a strong pull, and brought up a tangle of weeds. Again and again I cast out my line with aching arms, and drew it back empty. "Try once more," he said, "we fishermen must have patience to catch a fish." "But remember, boy," he said, with his big smile, "never say you've caught a fish until it is on dry ground. It's no use showing off anything until it's done."

How often since I have been reminded of the fish that I did not catch! When I hear people boasting of a work as yet undone, I will remember the wise caution of my uncle in that particular instance takes the form of a proverb of universal application: "NEVER BOAST (吹嘘) OF YOUR FISH BEFORE YOU CATCH HIM."

2 . A PhD student in Michigan defended her paper while wearing a skirt made of rejection letters she received while studying. 29-year-old Caitlin Kirby printed out 17 of her rejection letters — from scholarships, academic journals, and conferences — then folded each one into a fan. She connected them in rows, and by the end she designed the item into a skirt and wore it.

She said that the idea behind her unique clothing item came out of a desire to normalize rejection and take pride in overcoming it. "The whole process of revisiting those old letters and making that skirt sort of reminded me that you have to apply to a lot of things to succeed," she said. "A natural part of the process is to get rejected along the way."

Caitlin's adviser, Julie Libarkin, a professor of earth and environmental science at Michigan State University, also encourages the acceptance of failure in her students. Libarkin believes it's important for students to get into habit of applying for things, and to get used to the feeling of rejection, so she encourages them to chase after any opportunity that comes their way. If a student doesn't get the grant or the spot in the academic journal, that's okay. They'll still have learned something in the process.

As for Caitlin? Her rejections over the years have led to great things: Since her doctorate, she's won a scholarship to do further research on urban agriculture in Germany.

Currently, she's a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. As for what the future holds? "I'm prepared to receive a few more rejection letters along the way," she joked heartily, "Maybe I'll make a longer skirt."

1. What can we learn about Caitlin Kirby's rejection letters?
A.She received 17 rejections in total.
B.29 of her rejections were from journals.
C.The rejections were connected into a fan.
D.She made some rejection letters into a skirt.
2. What is Julie Libarkin's attitude towards Caitlin's action?
A.Favorable.B.Ambiguous.
C.Skeptical.D.Opposed.
3. Which of the following words can best describe Catlin?
A.Creative and considerate.B.Caring and determined.
C.Optimistic and humorous.D.Generous and intelligent.
4. Which of the following may Caitlin agree with?
A.Hard work pays off.
B.Education is the entrance to success.
C.Self-respect earns more respect.
D.One needs to normalize failures.

3 . The virus that causes COVID-19 can hang around on plastic packaging and plastic medical equipment for up to three days after polluting, a study suggests.

The researchers looked at how long the virus that causes the new coronavirus can survive on different things from cardboard to copper. The results show that the COVID-19 virus appears to survive longest on plastic and steel, where it can survive for two to three days. It did the least well on copper, lasting up to four hours, and can survive on cardboard for a day—up to 24 hours.

As well as looking at the virus' survival ability on certain things, the team looked at how long the virus can remain active in the air. Tests suggest it can remain in the air for up to three hours, explaining how mass gatherings can lead to multiple infections. This also means it is spread through people's coughs and sneezes in small drops that can remain present in the air and on surfaces.

The virus has been difficult to control and has caused a higher number of deaths than the SARS outbreak of 2003. The study's authors say there may be many reasons for this including the rate that asymptomatic carriers can spread the virus before symptoms develop. According to the WHO, it is not known how long the new coronavirus survives on surfaces but it seems that they can survive for several hours and days. The exact amount of time a virus can last depends on conditions like temperature and the amount of water in the air.

The WHO states: "If you think a surface may be infected, clean it with soap or something that can kill the virus and protect yourself and others. Clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water. Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, or nose.”

1. On which thing does the COVID-19 virus have the shortest survival time?
A.Copper.B.Plastic.C.Wood.D.Cardboard.
2. What might be a suggestion to prevent multiple infection?
A.Don't cough in public.B.Avoid mass gathering.
C.Stay away from virus.D.Don't touch strangers.
3. Why is the COVID-19 virus difficult to control according to the study's authors?
A.Because people know little about this virus.B.Because the weather conditions are changeable.
C.Because this virus can survive for a long timeD.Because there are some asymptomatic carriers.
4. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.It is necessary to clean every surface.B.Cleaning hands can protect your mouth and eyes.
C.The COVID-19 can be infected through contact.D.Drinking alcohol can prevent the COVID-19.

4 . A new report has concluded that advertising managers are becoming increasingly interested in children. Studies show that children influence about 50 percent of things that families buy, so they’re an attractive target for advertisers.

John Taylor, the author of the report, says:“Advertisers can reach their target in many ways. They can, for example, show an ad many times during school holidays, they can make the TV advertisements a little louder than the programmes to attract attention, or they can sponsor programmes and show their advertisements just before the programme begins.”

Most advertisements aimed at children are short, imaginative and often in the form of animated cartoons(动画片).“Children love the ads and watch them in the same way as any entertainment programmer,”Taylor says.

There’re concerns about advertising aimed at young people. The concerns are shared by Sarah Durham, a writer and journalist specializing in media analysis. “The most worrying thing is that children don’t think carefully when they see television advertisements. They’re less critical than adults and don’t usually realise the advertisement has a persuasive message, to encourage them or their parents to spend as much money as possible on the product or service,”she says.

There’re also concerns over the vast sums of money that junk food producers spend on advertising to persuade children to buy their food products. Many advertisements, argues Durham, sell food that is a lot higher in fat, salt and sugar than healthier alternatives. “Many companies target children with offers of free toys, models of cartoon characters and gimmicky(耍花招的)packaging.”

Government approaches to controlling advertising to children vary. In Sweden, one of the strictest countries where advertising is concerned, TV advertising to children under the age of 12 is banned. Greece bans television advertisements for children’s toys between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. Denmark and the Netherlands also have legal controls whereas France, Britain and Germany prefer self-regulation(自动调节).

Some countries are not as certain as the Swedes that advertising to children is harmful. The French argue that children need to see many advertisements so that they can develop their ability to think as they grow up. The belief is that advertising will help children to be more aware of its persuasive power.

1. What does John Taylor mainly talk about in Paragraph 2?
A.Ways in which advertisers reach children.
B.The time children spend watching television.
C.Examples of successful advertising to children.
D.The serious problems of advertising to children.
2. Why is Sarah Durham concerned about advertising aimed at children?
A.TV ads limit children’s imagination.
B.TV ads affect children’s brain development.
C.Children lack the good sense to make decisions.
D.Children may spend lots of time watching television.
3. What does Durham say about the food advertised?
A.It’s tasty.B.It’s cheap.
C.It’s unhealthy.D.It’s readymade.
4. What is the French’s attitude toward advertising to children?
A.Doubtful.B.Relaxed.
C.Objective.D.Unfavorable.

5 . A Portland, Oregon man has become the first person to travel across Antarctica by himself without receiving any assistance.

Colin O’Brady has completed the 1,500-kilometer trip. He crossed the continent in 54 days. Friends, family and other people followed his progress through messages and pictures he left on social media.

O’Brady spoke with his wife Jenna Besaw by telephone soon after he completed the journey. “It was an emotional call,” she said. “He seemed overwhelmed by love and appreciation, and he really wanted to say ‘thank you’ to all of us.”

7 . When I teach yoga (瑜伽), I usually announce “Phones off and at the back of the room” at the beginning of class. Recently, I forgot and had to whisper to a student texting during class to turn off her phone. She looked displeased but did so. But two days later, in another class, I was met with resistance from a young woman who completely refused.

“But I’m on call. I might have to jump up and run out of class.”

“Then maybe this isn’t the best place for you to be tonight.”

That response got me an angry and unfriendly look. But when she came back the next week, there was no phone and she was much more present.

Present is what I’m asking my students to be. Present to themselves and their yoga experience. You cannot be present to yoga if you are texting or emailing or anxiously awaiting a call. And neither can anyone around you. Definitely, if one phone is out, many pairs of eyes are drawn to it. And then other phones start to appear. Forget the fact that you’re missing the class you paid for; you’re at risk of losing your balance and hurting yourself or someone else due to inattention, or disturbing someone else’s moment of peace and stillness with the clicking of your keys.

So please, do yourself and everyone around you, this teacher included, a favor and turn your phone off and put it away before you unroll your yoga mat. If you truly are on call, think hard before you come to class.

Be present for yourself, wherever you need to be.

1. How does the author introduce her topic?

A.To describe the situation of her yoga class.
B.To explain her relationship with students.
C.To show her opinion about using mobile phones.
D.To stress the importance of being attentive in yoga class.

8 . The computer is a powerful tool. With it, teachers can improve the classroom experience in a variety of ways. But misuse of the computer will probably result in disadvantages.

To investigate the way technology is being used in our school district, I recently spoke with Jeanine Lowell, who teaches social studies at Lake Town Middle School. Mrs. Lowell informed me that computers have helped to increase students’ motivation and prepare them for life in a technological society. “These kids are probably going to be using some kind of computer system when they graduate from high school,” Lowell noted. “It’s important that we provide a proper introduction to them in the classroom.” Lowell also observed that the computers have made it easier to promote different areas of learning, so that students can work on a project or topic that relates to more than one subject.

With all of these benefits, however, come a few shortcomings. Although Mrs. Lowell has nearly wallpapered her room with warnings that state: “The computer is NOT A TOY”, not everyone in the class agrees with this idea. Some students get easily distracted (分心) by the internet and are quite good at making it look as if they are doing work when they are really checking their email or watching videos. “You’ve got to be three steps ahead,” she told me, “if you want to stay on top of what they’re actually doing on the computer.”

Some schools use some type of blocking software to ensure that students cannot access improper sites at school. More complex programs use a server-based, network-wide program instead of software that runs on personal computers. Research has shown that in a way these server-based blocking programs provide better security, because some students can disable the software on a personal computer.

However, there is no replacement for the watchful eye of a good teacher like Jeanine Lowell. There are also no electronic cure-alls for any of education’s many challenges. Technology is a useful tool, but that is all it is: a tool.

1. Where is this passage most likely from?
A.A newspaper.B.An advertisement.
C.A novel.D.A diary.
2. Which of the following isn’t the benefit of computer use in the classroom?
A.Improved motivation in the classroom.
B.Opportunities for learning across different subjects.
C.Increased preparation for the future use in the workplace.
D.Convenience of sharing ideas with people living across the globe.
3. The best way to prevent students from accessing improper sites on school computers is to ______.
A.post warning signs throughout the classroom
B.use blocking software on personal computers
C.monitor what students do on the computers carefully
D.use server-based software programs on personal computers
4. What is the writer’s opinion on the use of computers in the classroom?
A.It does more harm than good.
B.It is only supported by experts.
C.It contributes to teaching in some way.
D.It is more beneficial to teachers than students.

9 . A recent study suggests that vitamin D pills can help speed up the time taken for burns to heal, and prevent scarring(结疤). The vitamin, which is produced naturally in the body when the skin is exposed to sunshine, is believed to help protect against burning.

Previous studies have shown that vitamin D pills help decrease redness and swelling after sunburn, and may be one of the reasons why the body produces the chemical.

The research from Birmingham University, has found they may also help relieve other types of burn. Researchers monitored 38 patients who had suffered serious burns for a year and recorded their levels of vitamin D. They found that those with the highest levels of vitamin D had better wound healing and fewer scars.

Professor Janet Lord said: “Low vitamin D levels were associated with worse results in burn patients including life-threatening infections(感染),death and delayed wound healing. Major burn injury severely reduces vitamin D levels and adding this vitamin back may be a simple, safe and cost-effective way to improve the condition for burn patients.” Professor Lord and her team are now focusing on finding out why there is a rapid loss of vitamin D in patients immediately following burn injury and hope that they may be able to prevent this in future.

The amount of reduction in patients’ vitamin D levels was not related to the severity(严重程度) of the burn, so levels may also be decreased in minor burn injury, suggesting taking vitamin D pills could also help people with everyday burns. Public Health England now recommends that all Britons take vitamin D pills in the winter because it is impossible to make sufficient quantities in the darker months.

1. What does the new study find?
A.People with low vitamin D levels get burned easily.
B.Vitamin D helps with the recovery from burn injury.
C.Vitamin D pills aid in reducing the swelling from burns.
D.Vitamin D is more beneficial to serious burns than minor burns.
2. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A.The severity of one's burn reflects his vitamin D levels.
B.Vitamin D pills are more needed in the autumn months.
C.Burn patients lacking vitamin D are at high risk of infection.
D.Minor burns have no effect on patients’ vitamin D levels.
3. What does the underlined word “they” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The researchers.B.Vitamin D pills.
C.Previous studies.D.Some kinds of vitamins.
4. Which of the following can be the best title of the text?
A.Vitamin D: A Necessity for Our Health
B.Vitamin D Pills: When Are They Needed?
C.Vitamin D: How Much Does the Body Need?
D.Vitamin D Pills: Heal Burns &. Prevent Scarring

10 . My first piece of advice to people who want to start getting fit is: don’t buy an exercise bike. People who buy them usually use them for a week or so and then forget about them. The bikes are useful if they are often used but you need to be determined (有决心的). Most people will find it much easier to go for a jog (慢跑) around the park.

As well as being easy to do, jogging is also quite cheap compared to most other sports. You don’ t need to buy expensive clothes if you’ re just going running around the park or on the beach. There is one thing, however, that you will have to spend time and money on, and that’s your running shoes. Remember that you are looking for something that will support your feet and protect you from injury. They can be expensive, but if they are of good quality they will last you a long time. Ifs always best to get expert advice, and the best place for that is a sports shop.

As for jogging, the secret is to start slowly, and not to do too much at the beginning — especially if you haven’t had any exercise for a long time. Try a mixture of walking and running for ten minutes about three times a week at first. Once you are happy doing that you can then start to increase the amount (数量) you do gradually. After a few months you should hope to be able to run at a reasonable speed for twenty minutes three or four times a week.

It’s important that you feel comfortable with whatever you do. If you do, you’ll start to enjoy it and will probably keep doing it. If it makes you feel uncomfortable, you'll probably stop after a short time and return to your bad habits. Remember that training too hard is not very effective. Research has shown that somebody who exercises twice as long or twice as hard as another person doesn't become twice as fit.

1. What is the authors opinion on the exercise bike?
A.It is unaffordable for most people.B.It is easy to learn for most people.
C.It is a helper for most people.D.It is a waste for most people.
2. According to the author, what is very important for a jogger?
A.Listening lo expert advice.B.Keeping on jogging ever)-day.
C.Having a pair of good jogging shoes.D.Running for twenty minutes each time.
3. What does the author mainly explain in Paragraph 3?
A.Why it is easy to go for a jog.B.What kind of sport jogging is.
C.How to go jogging in a right way.D.When is the best time to go for a jog.
4. What do we know from the last paragraph?
A.Good exercises stop bad habits.
B.A partner helps a lot in exercise.
C.Feeling good keeps one's exercise going.
D.The more you exercise, the fitter you will be.
