1 . Our house was across the street from a hospital. We rented the upstairs rooms to outpatients at the clinic. One summer evening as I was preparing supper, there was a knock at the door. I opened it to see a truly awful looking man hardly taller than my eight-year-old daughter.

But the frightening thing was his swollen face. He told me he’d been hunting for a room since noon but no one seemed to have a room. For a moment I hesitated, but his next words convinced me: “I could sleep on the porch(门廊). My bus leaves early in the morning.”

I went inside and finished getting supper. When we were ready, I asked him to join us. “No thank you. I have plenty.” And he held up a brown paper bag. When I had finished the dishes, I went out to talk with him a few minutes.

He told me he fished for a living to support his daughter, who was hopelessly disabled, and her five children. He didn’t tell it by way of complaint; in fact, he was grateful that no pain accompanied his disease. He thanked life for giving him the strength to keep going.

At bedtime, we put a camp small bed in the children’s room for him. When I got up in the morning, the bed linens were neatly folded and the little man was out on the porch. He refused breakfast, but just before he left, he smiled, “Your children made me feel at home. Grownups are bothered by my face, but children don’t seem to mind.” I told him he was welcome to come again.

In the years he came to stay overnight with us there was never a time that he did not bring us fish or vegetables. Other times we received packages. Knowing that he must walk three miles to mail these, and knowing how little money he had made the gifts more precious. I know our family always will be grateful to have known him; from him we learned what it was to accept the bad without complaint and the good with gratitude.

1. What actually led to the old man’s failure to get a room before?

2 . Friends play a very important part in everyone’s life. Friendship usually develops during childhood. New friends are made when you progress through school. Those friends that you make as a student can usually last long. Friends influence your development, maturity(成熟) and the sense of responsibility. A familiar opinion is “You can tell a lot about a person by knowing who his friends are.” Friendship is based on common interests. If you like sports, most of your friends are likely to be active. If you enjoy reading and shopping, most of your friends do the same.

Some people call you their friends for the wrong reasons. These people are not really friends. They are only “friends” on the outside, not the inside where it counts. Superficial (表面的)friends only want to be your friends if it is to their advantage. True friends are there whether you are rich or poor. It is easy to have many so-called “friends” if you are rich. By this time you should be able to recognize your friends as the “real” or the “false”.

True friends are most special. Sometimes they might not be easy to find, so you can consider yourself very lucky if you have one true friend. This friend is eager to help you whenever necessary. He or she knows you would do the same for them. A true friend is someone you can talk to about any subject or problem. You and your true friend have good understanding of each other. True friends support you, take your side, and build up your confidence.

1. What’s the main idea of the first paragraph?
A.How to make true friends.
B.What is friendship based on.
C.We should make friends in our childhood.
D.Friends play a very important role in our life.
2. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.It is easy to have many true friends if you are rich.
B.If you have no music in you, none of your friends will be a music lover.
C.The friendship developing during your school days will be with you for a long time.
D.What you value above anything is the friendship developing during childhood.
3. What does the underlined phrase “so-called friends” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Friends in need.
B.Those who can help you.

3 . Today’s workplaces are more multicultural than ever, and it’s normal to work with people from many different places and backgrounds. This has opened up many new opportunities - but it also creates some challenges.

Cultural differences aren’t just about nationality, race or belief Many of us work in multigene rational organizations, alongside younger or older colleagues who have cultural references, assumption(假设)and attitudes that are very different from our own. All of this means that we need to be better at understanding and operating in a wide variety of cultures. That’s where Cultural Intelligence, or also CQ,—the ability to adapt to new cultural settings, comes in.

People with high CQ aren’t experts in every kind of culture. Instead, they have the skills to go into new environments with confidence, and to make informed judgments based on observations and evidence.

These people are good at understanding unfamiliar or ambiguous behavior. They recognize shared influences among particular groups, and this allows them to identify the impact of a particular culture.

However, they also know that cultural influences are complex and interconnected. And they’re aware that while culture is significant, factors such as business roles and individual personalities can have a powerful effect on behavior, too.

For example, let’s say you have a meeting with an Italian stockbroker (证券经纪人).Does this person behave the way they do because they’re Italian, because they’re a stockbroker, or because they’re an Italian stockbroker? Or is it because they’re a millennial, or an introvert? It’s likely a combination of all of these elements (要素),so aim to avoid making assumptions or generalizations based on any single aspect.

Cultural knowledge doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to know every detail of a culture. It’s about knowing how that culture in general shapes people’s behaviors, values, and beliefs. When you understand that, individual "rules" of behavior make much more sense.

1. Why do we need to have CQ?
A.Because we have owned IQ, EQ.
B.Because the earth has become a global village.
C.Because we trade with people from all over the world.
D.Because we work with people from different places and backgrounds.
2. Which person may have a high CQ?
A.John is an expert in every kind of culture.
B.Tom has an ability of dealing with different customers.
C.Mary can understand unfamiliar or uncertain behavior.
D.Jane works at a foreign country and often feels confused.
3. Why does author refer to an Italian stockbroker in paragraph6?
A.To show a special Italian man.B.To stress the importance of Italia.
C.To advise reader to visit Italia.D.To prove complex cultural influences.
4. What will be discussed in the next paragraph?
A.How to find the individual "rules" of behavior.
B.How to know every detail of an unfamiliar culture.
C.How to work in a multicultural workplace.
D.How to get attention in multicultural workplace.

4 . The Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Tasmania, Australia, isn’t the only museum to have shut its gates because of the Covid-19 pandemic, but it stands out because of its unique, human artwork.

As hard as it is to believe. Tim is both a man and an artwork. A former tattoo parlor (纹身) owner from Zurich, in Switzerland, he agreed to have his back tattooed by artist Belgian Wim Delvoye in 2006, and has been exhibiting his body art in museums and art galleries ever since. He has been coming to MONA since 2011, for work that can last up to six months at a time and see him sitting with his legs crossed on a plinth, in complete silence, showing off Delvoye’s artwork. And even though MONA closed down on March 18, he continues to sit in the empty museum for six hours a day. That is his job...

Tim learned about Wim Delvoye’s plan to create a human artwork from his girlfriend, and immediately said that he would be up for it. After meeting with the artist, he sat through 40 hours of tattooing over two years. A few years ago, the art on his back _ an artistic tattoo of the Madonna with a skull above her head - was sold to German curator (馆长) and collector Rik Reinking for $162,500.

For six hours a day, every day, Tim sits on his plinth, showing off his back tattoo. Even though there is no one there to admire it, he is also live streamed via the internet, so who knows, maybe there is actually someone wanting to see his tattoo, or rather Delvoye. Tim never gives interviews; he doesn’t speak to anybody and doesn’t even show his face, if he can help it. He is just a canvas (画 布)for an artist’s masterpiece.

"It’s not the Tim show," Tim said in a video for MONA. “I’m just decoration in the Wim show.”

1. What made MONA in Tasmania, Australia unique in the world?
A.Allowing Tim to work as an artwork.
B.The special human artwork made on Tim’s back.

C.Delvoye’s works’ decoration.D.A tattoo parlor owner.

5 . Captured(捕获的) carbon dioxide(CO2) could be used to extract(提炼) useful metals(金属) from recycled technology such as smartphone batteries rather than just being buried underground. The technique could help make it more economical to capture the greenhouse gas before it enters the atmosphere.

“If you also extract metals by filling CO2, you add value to a process that is known to be costly,” says Julien Leclaire at the University of Lyon, France.

CO2 is the main cause of modern climate change, so many people have attempted to develop technologies to capture it when it comes from power plants and other major sources. The gas can then be stored underground. The problem is that such carbon capture and storage (CCS) is expensive. “No one wants to pay the price for it,” says Leclaire.

To make CCS more appealing, Leclaire’s team has found a use for the gas.

His team collected CO2 from a car gas, cooled it, then pumped it into a mix of chemicals. The CO2 combined with the mix to make many molecules(分子) of various shapes and sizes.

The team found that this process could sort out mixtures of metals, because one metal would dissolve(溶解) in the liquid while another would form a solid. In a series of experiments, they successfully separated three kinds of metals-all of which are used in batteries, smartphones and computers.

If the process can be widely used, it could be a more environmentally friendly way to recycle batteries and other electrical equipment, says Leclaire. This is normally done using highly reactive chemicals, which are potentially polluting. Replacing them with CO2 should lead to a much lower environmental pollution, he says.

Other researchers and companies are trying to change captured CO2 into useful materials like plastics, which are normally produced from petrol, but this is chemically difficult. Leclaire says his approach is more in line with how CO2 behaves naturally. “Instead of copying what we know how to do better and cheaper with oil, let’s find things you can only do with CO2,” he says.

1. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A.Extracting useful metals from recycled technology is widely used now.
B.Useful metals in the atmosphere are used to make smartphone batteries.
C.Abandoned smartphone batteries may have been buried underground before.
D.The greenhouse gas CO2 could be cleaned up after entering the atmosphere.
2. Why are many people attempting to capture CO2?
A.CO2 is the main cause of modern climate change.
B.CO2 can be used to recycle many resources.
C.Captured CO2 can be changed to useful gas.
D.CO2 is harmful to people’s health.
3. What benefit could Leclaire’s team’s approach bring?
A.It could end the use of plastics.
B.It could reduce environmental pollution.
C.It could make more metals available to humans.
D.It could help reduce the cost of battery production.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.The Ways to Make Smartphone Batteries
B.The Reason for Capturing Greenhouse Gas
C.Collecting CO? Is Starting to Make New Progress
D.Captured CO2 Could Be Used to Help Recycle Useful Metals

6 . In spring, you may be fortunate enough to have good weather, a small piece of earth and the energy, enthusiasm and inspiration to plant a garden. There is nothing better to shake off the boredom and dullness of winter than to dig in the earth, plant some seeds and watch them grow. A small garden can produce something extra fresh for dinner, flowers for the table and a feeling of accomplishment. It is work, but it is ever so rewarding.

What about your life garden? Just as a beautiful garden is a work in progress, so is the garden in your mind. It takes effort, planning, nurturing (培育) and weeding to grow a garden. What have you planted—what have you allowed to take root? Is your life the picture of a well laid out garden or an untidy mixture of plants, trees and weeds whose seeds were blown your way and took root?

We have all heard phrases like “sowing seeds of doubt” or “sowing seeds of discontent”. We can make a careful choice whether to allow them to take root in our lives or throw them out of our garden. Negative energy and words, like weeds, will spread quickly if left unchecked. Find a good “weed killer”—a book, an inspirational story, positive affirmations (肯定) —to help you get rid of the thoughts that reduce the beauty of your garden.

Plant as many seeds of joy and beauty as you can — in your own life and in the lives of the people with whom you live and work every day. Grow a gratitude garden, a peace garden and a dream garden. Look after them daily. If you give them time and energy, you will have a rich harvest of success, happiness and peace of mind.

1. Why does the author tell us the benefits of growing a garden?
A.To lead to the life garden.B.To introduce a rewarding work.
C.To show his love for gardening.D.To suggest a way to kill boredom.
2. In what way is our life garden similar to a beautiful garden?
A.It changes all the time.
B.It needs our effort and nurturing.
C.It can make us happy and grateful in life.
D.It is full of both positive and negative energy.
3. Why does the author compare negative energy and words to weeds?
A.They are a natural part of life.
B.They are often left unchecked.
C.They are difficult to be removed.
D.They need to be removed before they spread.
4. Which of the following can be regarded as a weed killer?
A.Reading a dull book.B.Expressing our discontent.
C.Having positive selftalks.D.Pulling up weeds in the garden.

7 . We have the most friends at the age of 26 after having spent the first quarter of our lives building up our friendship circle, a new research has claimed.

The research into friendship shows that our social circle peaks at 26 years and 7 months, at which we typically have five close friends. Women are the most popular at 25 years and 10 months, with men hitting the highest friendship point a little later at 27 years and 3 months.

The research, by Forever Friends, shows that about a third of adults meet their closest friends while at school, with about a fifth saying they meet them at work.

Social networks such as Facebook and Twitter now also play a major role in building new friendship. The research points out that 25 to 34-year-olds make 22 friends via Facebook, compared to 18 to 24-year-olds who make 12, and 35 to 44-year-olds who make just four.

Forever Friends’ relationship coach Sam Owen says, “It is no coincidence that over a third of us meet our best friends at school. It is a key time in our lives when friendship is growing through sharing notes, giving gifts, seeing each other regularly and laughing a lot. As adults we can often forget how powerful these small things are and how the little things can make a difference. ”

Later in life we find ourselves losing friends. Over half of us lose friendship through moving, while 36% say that over time they grow apart from close pals. Having children also causes 19% to drift away from childhood friends.

With growing pressures being put on friendship these days, it’s important to make time for our friendship.

1. How many friends can a 20-year-old college student make via Facebook?
A.4.B.18.
C.12.D.22.

9 . I used to overeat. I’ve never been significantly overweight, so people are surprised to hear this. When you think of overeating, you think of someone who is above their natural weight range(范围), right? Well, I used to purposefully undereat as well. I was able to keep my weight within some control, but only through a lot of physical and mental pain.

Here’s a glimpse(一瞥)into my life as a first-year university student:

Friday: Go to a party and eat a lot of chips. Feel guilt and regret. Vow (发誓) to wake up and run an extra mile.

Saturday: Run 6 miles, come home and only eat a tiny breakfast. Eat like a bird for the rest of the day. Feel proud of myself.

Sunday: Study and snack on chocolate chips all day. Feel sick.

Monday: Head to class with no snack and no money so that I can’t buy any food. Feel hungry but full of willpower. Go home and overeat at dinner. Feel out of control.

My feelings were on a constant pendulum shift. I was proud and in control one moment, and then full of regret and out of control the next. It was exhausting.

As I studied nutrition and human anatomy(人体解剖学) in university,I started to learn just how amazing the human body is! The human body is an amazing, self-regulatory system. It knows precisely how much food it needs. When I learned this, my whole world changed. I stopped trying to manage my eating with willpower. Instead of trying to power through my hunger, I would provide my body with wholesome foods, so I would feel hungry less often.

This process definitely took some work and reflection, but after a while it became second nature. Eating has become a joyful experience, instead of a source of stress and worry in my life. All my eating is now guilt-free! I shamelessly eat unhealthy snacks without regret. Of course, the majority of my food intake does come from whole, healthy foods that are close to nature.

10 . Some people don’t know whether to learn American English or British English. Here is my answer to it.

It’s really, really hard to pick up a native-sounding accent if you learn English as an adult. Children pick up accents very quickly, but adults don’t. Even after speaking English every day for twenty or thirty years, you’ll probably keep a bit of a foreign accent. I’ve met many English learners who’ve lived abroad for several years in an English-speaking country. For the most part, I can’t tell what country they’ve lived in unless they tell me.

Since it’s so hard to learn an accent, you probably shouldn’t spend a lot of time trying to guide yours to one accent or the other. There are better ways to use your time, like learning new vocabulary or phrases.

Even if you are able to get an American or British accent, it won’t make much difference. That’s because English speakers are used to hearing different accents. Americans hear British accents on TV and movies. And we all hear accents from other countries: Russian accents, Korean accents, French accents, and so on. Usually, British people like the way that Americans sound, and Americans like the way that British people sound. So you’re OK either way.

So just pick whatever language is most convenient for you. If you have friends or teachers from America, you should probably learn American English. If you have British friends or coworkers, maybe it’s better to learn British English.

It’s probably easiest to stick with just one kind. However, there’s nothing wrong with mixing a bit of British and American English together. It won’t hurt you!

1. The author mentions English learners in Paragraph 2 to show         .
A.it’s hard to speak like native speakersB.the author isn’t good at telling accents
C.people don’t like speaking with an accentD.people like to live abroad to learn a language
2. What does the author think English learners should do?
A.Choose a special country to live in.B.Make use of time to learn new words.
C.Tell the differences between accents.D.Learn British accents through movies.
3. Paragraph 4 mainly shows that         .
A.there are many accents in the world
B.which accent to learn isn’t that important
C.American and British accents aren’t very different
D.Americans and British people understand each other
4. The author thinks mixing some British and American English together is         .
A.okayB.necessaryC.wrongD.dangerous
