1 . If Confucius(孔子)were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He'd need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.

While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It's nothing personal. Most Americans don't even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.

But this doesn't mean that Americans don't care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.

In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually include Chinese art, history and

philosophy(哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks(缺陷)of Western philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.

So the old thinker's ideas are still alive and well.

3 . China Science Daily announced Thursday that it has used software to automatically generate news stories about the latest discoveries from the world’s leading science journals. The robot science reporter, called “Xiaoke”, was co-created by the newspaper and researchers from Peking University in about half a year.

It is the latest case of Chinese news organizations using computer technology to create content. According to its inventors, Xiaoke has generated over 200 stories based on the English abstract of papers published in journals such as Science, Nature, Cell and the New England Journal of Medicine.

Before publication, the automatically generated articles will go through a review process. A group of scientists and the newspaper’s editors will check the content or give supplementary (补充的) information.

Zhang Mingwei, head of the program and vice editor-in-chief of the newspaper, said inventors would make Xiaoke a “cross-linguistic (跨语言的) academic secretary” to help Chinese scientists overcome language barriers and have easy and quick access to the latest scientific advances in English-language publication. Lead researcher Wan Xiaojun, of Peking University in charge of the system’s design and technology, stressed that the content generation tool could do far more than translation. According to Wan, Xiaoke is good at selecting complex words and sentences, which can help turn articles full of confusing technical terms into easy and readable news reports.

4 . I have well travelled in Spain and visited a good number of Spanish cities. However, no city will ever quite match Cadiz, where I spent six months studying as a student.

Before that, I knew very little about Cadiz but I decided to take a risk and explore it. Well, the risk certainly paid off.

Cadiz, Europe’s oldest city, hangs off Spain’s southern coast on a peninsula (半岛), surrounded almost entirely by water. As you leave the shady streets of the historical old city and explore more of it, you are met with vast areas of the blue Atlantic Ocean and white sandy beaches, which in my opinion are some of the best in Spain!

One of the great things about Cadiz is the wonderful, rich culture of food and drink. There are little tapas (小吃) bars lining every street and most will serve tapas for around 1.50~2 euros, meaning you can try a whole variety of Andalusian dishes.

Cadiz has also come to be known as “The Singing City”. It comes from the annual carnival (狂欢节), one of the biggest in Europe. A very large number of people go to Cadiz to see it. During those ten days, Cadiz’s narrow streets are filed with the sound of singing as musical groups fight for a place in the contest, which takes place on the last Saturday of carnival. The songs perfectly show the sense of humor of the Gaditanos, who, besides being so warm and welcoming, are said to have the best sense of humor in Spain!

That is my experience of Cadiz: a wonderful, typically Andalusian city which is often overlooked but well worth a visit. I can currently living in Huelva, just a short drive from Cadiz, so please pay attention to my next sharing!

1. What dose the word “that” underlined in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Studying in Cadiz.B.Competing in a match.
C.Teaching a student.D.Becoming an explorer.
2. What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?
A.The unknown origin and long history of Cadiz.B.The beautiful life of people living to Cadiz.
C.The geographic position and scenery of Cadiz.D.The author’s complex attitude towards Cadiz.
3. Why is Cadiz called “The Singing City”?
A.A number of local people enjoy humorous songs.
B.Singing is everywhere during a big annual carnival.
C.Many grand carnivals attract well-known singers.
D.A lot of singing competitions take place each year.
4. From which is the text most probably taken?
A.A post on the Internet.B.A geography textbook.
C.A travel brochure.D.A biography.

5 . Facts about novel corona virus: Prevention and control

l Keep distance with people when talking

The novel corona virus can be transmitted via droplets and fly 1 to 2 meters in the air before falling to the ground. Droplets can be transmitted far longer when sneezing and coughing than speaking, so apart from keeping 1 to 2 meters of distance, also remember to wear a mask when you are close to someone else.

l Washing hands can reduce risk of getting infected

Please wash your hands promptly and properly after touching elevator buttons or using cash. Do not touch your nose or mouth or rub your eyes before washing your hands. Do not use smart phones while eating.

l Receiving delivered packages at home not dangerous

Though the virus might be attached to the packaging of delivered items, the possibility of transmission through express delivery is extremely low. Before going out to take your delivery, remember to wear a mask. After removing the packaging, please wash your hands.

l Sun exposure cannot kill the virus

The temperature of sun light cannot reach 56℃, and the ultraviolet rays in sunlight cannot reach the intensity of ultraviolet lamps, so the virus can’t be killed by the sunlight. If you want to go out to get some sun, please wear a mask and take other protective measures.

l Taking a hot bath or using air conditioning cannot kill the virus

Although the virus is vulnerable to heat. It can only be inactivated after exposure to a 56°C temperature for over 30 minutes.

l Woolen fabric doesn’t retain virus longer

It is believed that the virus prefers smooth, non-porous surfaces and stays on woolen fabrics for a shorter time. At home or before going out, it is not necessary to consider which kind of material has less chance to absorb the virus—choosing comfortable clothes is enough.

After returning home, please wash your hands, sterilize the clothes and dry the clothes.

1. What are you suggested to do when taking delivered packages?
A.Wear a mask.
B.Take a hot bath.
C.Open packages.
D.Dry the clothes.

6 . If there was such things as perfect food, eggs would be one of them. They're readily available, easy to cook, affordable and packed with protein.

But for decades, eating eggs has also been controversial due to their high cholesterol(胆固醇)content. One egg contains around 185 milligrams of cholesterol, which is more than half of the 300mg daily amount of cholesterol that the US dietary guidelines recommended until recently.

Researchers haven't definitively linked consumption of cholesterol to an increased risk of cardiovascular(心血管的)disease. As a result,US dietary guidelines no longer have a cholesterol restriction;nor does the UK.Instead, emphasis is placed on limiting how much fat we consume, which can increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Research published earlier this year, though, challenged the common opinion that eggs have no harm to our health.Researchers looked at data from 30,000 adults followed for an average of 17 years and found that each additional half an egg per day was significantly linked to a higher risk of heart disease and death.

Despite the study being one of the largest of its kind to address this specific relationship between eggs and heart disease,it was observational, giving no indication of cause and effect.

While researchers are a long way from understanding why eggs affect us differently, the vast majority of recent research suggests they pose no risk to our health, and are much more likely to provide health benefits.

Even so,having eggs for breakfast every day probably isn't the healthiest option, either—at least as it's recommended that we have a varied diet…rather than put all our eggs in one basket.

1. Which section on a newspaper could you probably find this article?
A.Society
B.Health
C.Travel
D.Fashion

A.Because they are readily available.
B.Because they are easy to cook.
C.Because they are affordable and packed with protein.
D.Because they contain much cholesterol.

A.Cholesterol has strong link to the increased risk of disease.
B.The UK dietary guidelines no longer have a cholesterol restriction.

D.Eggs is not harmful to our health.
4. What is suggested by the author in the last paragraph?
A.Having eggs everyday for breakfast.
B.Recommending our friends to have at least one egg per day.
C.Balancing our diet with different kinds of food.
D.Putting all eggs in one basket when your buy them.

7 . Join us for the opening of the schools of the future exhibition — event

The year is 2035. A group of schoolchildren heads over to a garden for lunch and, after the break, teachers send lessons into headsets (头戴式耳机) worn by students. The wearable tech is able to read body signals to make sure the child is concentrating (全神贯注) and can differentiate the lessons according to how their young charge is getting along. It can also send a full progress assessment (评估) to the teacher.

This is one picture of the future of school life, but how likely is it? Over the past five months, the Guardian Teacher Network has been exploring how schools might develop over the next twenty years and beyond. Our journalists have explored a series of topics from whether computers could replace teachers and how some libraries are breaking with tradition, to the rise of outdoor learning and the forest school revolution. One area that provides much food for thought is the future of school dinners. Journalist Matthew Jenkin has looked back at Jamie Oliver’s campaign against Turkey Twizzlers, deciding that the next hot topics include mealtimes and foods.

We’re now bringing these ideas to life in an exciting exhibition, supported by Zurich Municipal, held at our offices in London. It is free to attend. We’ll be hearing from Liz Sproat, the head of education for Google across Europe, Middle East and Africa.

With fantastic sound, more than 30 hours of battery life, and extreme noise-canceling, the WH-1000XM3 are our favorite wireless headphones.

Apple AirPods Pro for $235 ( $15 off)

Amazon

These are Apple's newest AirPods, and we really like them. The discount isn't the greatest, but it's probably the best deal you'll find on AirPods Pro this holiday season, since they’re brand new.

Four-Driver Earbuds for 146 ($7 off)

Amazon

Most headphones have a single driver that makes all the sound, but these have four, which helps them balance frequencies more steadily, creating a wider soundstage, and providing clearer separation between guitars, keyboards and vocals(歌唱部分).

Beats Studio 3 Wireless Noise-Canceling Headphones for $200 ( $150 off)
