Have you ever felt the need to grab a pen and start writing your thoughts on a piece of paper? Tom had always been a lover of stories, and of words that come together to create vivid imagery (意象). He would spend hours writing down his thoughts and ideas, crafting worlds and people with his pen and paper.
But when it came to his parents, they didn’t believe how much he enjoyed writing. In fact, they discouraged him, telling him that he should focus on more practical career fields like becoming a lawyer.
The annual writing competition arrived once again, which was a time to show creative writing as well as the vivid imagination of students. Although Tom had a burning passion for writing, he had always hesitated to enter the race. He was worried that his parents would disapprove of him spending so much time writing, leading him to miss the competition in previous years. But this time, he decided to take a chance and see if he could win this race. Perhaps if his parents saw how talented he truly was, they would come to support him.
Days passed as he carefully prepared his writing, pouring his heart and soul into every word. When he finished, he read it over and felt proud of what he had written. He prepared to hand in his writing, but his parents still believed he was wasting time. He still decided to submit his entry anyway.
Weeks went by before the contest’s results were announced. Tom waited anxiously, wondering if his writing was good enough to win a prize. He checked out his mailbox every day after school.

The sound of breaking glass was immediately recognizable. Hearing the sound, I turned around and froze. “Oh, no, not the vase,” Lisa said. “Why? What did I do?” My face turned red. “Abby, that glass vase is our family heirloom (传家宝),” Lisa replied nervously. “If you broke anything else in the apartment, I would gladly say ‘I did it’. But this time you have to tell my mom that it is your fault.” I was afraid and regretful. Why did I have to jump around like that?
We gathered up the pieces. I kept saying maybe it could be fixed but Lisa said gently it didn’t look possible and that her mom would be home soon. Would her mom shout at me or punish me? I couldn’t stop playing those seconds over in my mind. The only thing I could think of to say was “I’m sorry”.
Soon, we heard the key tun in the lock. Her mom was home. We could see she was in a good mood, “Hello! It’s hot today. I want to treat you two to ice cream. Let’s go!” her mom said. “Before that, I need to tell you something.” I said. “We can talk later.” “No, I need to tell you now. It’s important,” I insisted. I could feel my voice shaking. “What is it, dear?” Her mom walked closer to me. I could feel she studied my face thoughtfully. My heart beat faster.
“I’m sorry. I broke your vase by accident. I’ve leaned it is your family heirloom. We have save the pieces, and if it can be fixed, I will pay to fix it. I’m so sorry.” Her mom looked at me expressionless and saying nothing. This scared me even more. Then she let out laughter and hugged me, kissing me on both cheeks. “Oh, thank you! I always hated that ugly vase, but I had to keep it because it was passed down in my family. Now it’s gone! You’ve done me a huge favor!” she said and kissed me again.

The gym teacher blew the whistle (哨子) and four students dived into the swimming pool, racing to the other side. Then the next four were up, but only three stood on the diving board. “Where is Ren?” the gym teacher asked in concern.
Ren’s face turned red, and he was unsteady. He looked at the pool and stepped back. “You cannot make me do this!” he said.
Sadie patted him on the back gently. “You can do it! I will help you if you need it.” Ren stared into Sadie’s eyes and he calmed down.
“You can do it. You need to pass this class.” The gym teacher said. Ren stepped on the diving board, vputting his goggles (护目镜)vover his eyes, and the blue cap hid his red hair. The whistle blew and Ren stood there as the other three swam away. Then one boy ran and pushed Ren into the water.
Sadie glared at the boy. “Why would you do that?” A minute passed by and Ren still wasn’t coming up. Sadie jumped in and pulled him out of the water. She gave him CPR (心肺复苏),and it took a while until water came out of his lungs. Then finally he spat out the water and sat up, feeling dizzy.
Ren looked over at Sadie, who breathed a sigh of relief. “Oh, thank goodness! Why didn’t you use your arms or legs?”Ren stared away from Sadie, looking at the bottom of the blue pool, then looking up at the gym teacher who rolled his eyes.“I can’t swim. My parents never taught me as a kid. We are afraid of water.”
Sadie put her hand on his shoulder. “Don’t worry. I will teach you how to swim. The water is my favourite place to be.”Ren thought for a while, and nodded gently.

Jimmy and Bob who were raised in New York were childhood best friends. When Bob was eighteen and Jimmy was twenty, Bob set out for the West to make his fortune. They parted at “Big Joe’ Brady’s” and made a promise to get together at the same place after twenty years. However, at the appointed time and place, it turned out that Bob became a criminal while Jimmy was a policeman. Jimmy did his duty and Bob was put into prison. Having spent 20 years in jail, Bob was finally released. Now 58, felt lost and helpless.
“Twenty years is a long time,” he smiled bitterly, not knowing where to go. He had no family, and had never heard a word from Jimmy again since that cold, dark night. “Was he ashamed of having a friend like me?” Bob longed for an answer.
“Excuse me, sir, are you Bob?” Bob heard the voice of a young man.
“Yes.” He turned around and was surprised to find a familiar-looking man in his thirties. “Have we met before?”
“No, sir,” replied the man. “My father told me to meet you today. I have a note for you from him.”
Doubtfully, Bob unfolded the note. His hands were shaking by the time he had finished reading.
Bob, the doctor says I’ve only got three months. I’m afraid I won’t be able to meet you this time, but you’ll always be my dear friend.

The first week of September was a week that I had been expecting all summer. I didn’t want summer to end. But I was excited about going to high school for my first week.
When I got to school in the morning on the first day I realized how large the school was, and how many students went there. I ended up in the wrong classroom because of the size of the school. Luckily, a kind senior showed up and guided me to my homeroom before I was late. I was happy to see that in a class of unfamiliar (不熟悉的) faces, the only open seat was next to my good friend, Casey. My science teacher seemed like a good teacher. She was exciting and fun.
After finishing four periods without too much of a challenge, I didn’t feel too bad about ninth grade.
However, the fifth period changed everything.

A Different Kind of Perfect
Ellie loved the family gathering at Lola’s house on Fourth of July. She loved Lola’s chicken adobo — chicken in a delicious sauce (酱汁). It was perfect. But this year, Lola asked Ellie to make the adobo by herself because she must visit a sick friend.
“But I don’t know how!” Ellie said.
“That’s why you should be in charge. ” Lola smiled.
Lola pulled out the ingredients (原料): chicken, onion and lemon juice. She explained how to make the dish and then left.
Ellie got started immediately. When the dish was cooked, she tasted it and added a little more of this and a little more of that until it tasted right.
“Now it’s like soup! I need more chicken.” Ellie said to herself, “But I have no time to go to the store. What else can I use?”
The doorbell rang as relatives started to arrive. Ellie wanted to cry.

On the first day of school, I stared in awe at the huge buildings. This high school was definitely bigger than the one I had previously attended.
This was my second year of high school, but my first year of school in St. Louis. I had decided the night before that I would be much happier in a new school if I made friends that were so-called “popular”. Getting in with the right group of people would make my life a whole lot better. I even bought a new outfit and had my hair styled just so the first day would be perfect.
Scared, yet anxious to begin my new life, I walked up the stairs to the front door. The halls were packed with kids yelling and laughing and telling stories of their summer adventures. My first class was geometry, but where was that?
I was standing in the hall looking confused, when a short, blond girl wearing glasses came up and asked, “Are you new? You look lost. Do you need help? My name is Diane. What’s yours?” Even though she seemed a bit strange, definitely not the kind of person I wanted to be associated with, I decided to answer her anyway. I was, after all, lost.
After exchanging names. I followed her up the stairs and down a hallway on the right, making polite conversation the whole way. When we reached my room she said, “Well, here you are. Welcome to JFK, and I hope your day goes all right.”
I said thanks and waved good-bye. Once inside the classroom, I saw one big group of people huddled around someone who seemed to be telling some sort of story. I walked over and got close enough to overhear. All eyes were glued to the guy in the middle of the circle who was wearing a letter jacket covered with patches. I decided that this guy was popular, so I managed to get a seat right next to him. I said, “Hi, my name is Lisa and I’m new here.” He said, “Johnny.”
