I went bankrupt (破产的) and I am in debt now,” Karl said. “I knew this would happen someday,” Fred painfully thought. He planned to help his son and made one of his most difficult choices. “Don’t worry, my son. Luckily, you will succeed to (继承) a huge amount of money from your uncle, soon,” Fred told Karl.

So close were they that every time they moved, Jenny would say that as long as they were together, they had a family.” My heart sank as Mom continued, “Jenny’s stepfather (继父) came for her brother this week, with gifts, hugs and big plans for their future. But Jenny wasn’t even part of his big plans.” My chest felt tight. “Poor Jenny, not to have a family.” I was close to tears. My mother patted my knee. “That’s it, honey. You got it.” And I did.

I decided that I should do something. I proposed that we organize a team gathering before the tournament.   Each member was to write a heartfelt message for every teammate and prepare a special gift for the one they felt most connected to. I made sure that Jenny would come. It took some persuading, though.

I made my way back to my chair, trying to remember how to sit gracefully in a skirt. My hands were shaking so much that I had trouble holding on to my speech. I barely noticed the teacher call the name of my opponent(对手), who was now walking up to read his speech. I tried to listen, to compare, to predict my chances, but I had too many other thoughts flying through my head.

I looked at the faces opposite me. My friends smiled at me and gave me an encouraging thumbs-up sign when they caught my eye. As each of the next candidates read their speeches, I debated my chances in my head.

I remembered my loss the previous year. I was depressed for an entire weekend. This time, I would not get my hopes up.

Finally, it was time for me to head down to the office to hear the results.

Now, our dad decided it was high time to teach him a lesson. “Jeff, come here,” Dad called out. “I’ve some good news for you.” Jeff immediately came and asked excitedly, “What, Dad?” “Your mom and I are too busy recently. Tonight, I want you to wash your own clothes,”Dad smiled. Jeff immediately refused, shaking his head.

One evening, I mixed up orders for a large party, causing chaos and frustration.

I felt desperate. I screwed everything up. Then I heard Mr. Smith call me, and I went into his office with my head low. To my surprise, he didn’t blame me. While it was tempting to seek a second opinion, Edith and Smith knew that genetic mapping did not lie: The results were definitive and life-changing.

They hesitated about explaining to 7-year-old Mia what her condition meant. Should they let her be a kid, innocent and unaware, for as long as possible? A few weeks later, it just came out, part of a coversation about disabilities in general while having lunch at their kitchen table.

“You know the problem with your eyes?” Edith asked Mia. “You’re probably going to be blind when you’re an adult.” The truth was more abrupt (意外的) than Edith had hoped, but at least it was done. Edith held her breath as she waited for Mia to respond.

“Oh, that’s not fun.” the girl said before changing the subject.
