2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完 整的短文。

When Ms. Chow announced the coming “Battle of the Books”, we were so excited. She said, “You’re going to be in teams of three, and you’ll need to set a reading goal for your team. Every team that meets their goal by the end of the month will get a prize!”

That sounded pretty good to me. Wyatt turned to me, saying, “Teammates?”

“Oh, sure!” I said. Wyatt and I liked a lot of the same books, so we could set a goal like reading every graphic novel (漫画小说) in a series.

The lunch bell sounded before Ms. Chow could explain any more rules. Liya came to our desk and said “Teammates?” to Wyatt and me.

“Yeah, teammates!” Wyatt and I answered happily. Liya could read super-fast in both Hindi and English. If we set a goal like reading books by authors from different countries, she could help the team for sure.

Over lunch, we discussed what we needed to do for the contest (竞赛) when Kash came to us.“Do you have ideas for us?”I asked him.

Kash said, “Why would I give you guys ideas? I’ll save them for my team. ”

“Kash, come on, ”I said. “It’s teams of three. Wyatt and Liya said something to me first. If you had, then it would be different. ”

“I see how I rank (属于某等级) in the friendship lineup, ”Kash said angrily, and left.

We were very surprised, but we understood him. The four of us always did things together. I felt the only way to fix this was to allow four people on a team.

So, in the afternoon we went to see Ms. Chow. Guess what? She told us she was going to draw names to assign random groups (随机分配组).

As we walked out of the office, we became silent. We knew even if Ms. Chow had let us form a four-person group, Kash knew we had first teamed up without him. We knew we wouldn’t be able to enjoy any prize if one of our best friends felt bad about being left out. What could we do to clear up this misunderstanding?

“Class, please line up! Let’s welcome Marti,” said Ms. Baroni, our tae kwon do (跆拳道) teacher.

I was excited that my best friend Marti would be taking lessons, too.

Everyone said, “Hi.” Marti went red in the face.

“You don’t need to be shy here,” I said to Marti in a quiet voice. “Everyone’s really nice.”

After warm-up exercises, Ms. Baroni divided everyone into groups. Even though I was a level above Marti, Ms. Baroni told us to practice together. “Jenna, why don’t you show Marti some basic kicks?”

I said sure and showed her a front kick. Marti copied it. Her kick was as high as my shoulder. “Great job, Marti! Let me show you something,” said Ms. Baroni. She then spent the next five minutes working with Marti. I leaned (倚靠) against the wall and watched Marti copy everything Ms. Baroni did. The more Marti did, the more praise she received from Ms. Baroni.

I practiced my form half-heartedly. “What if Marti became better than me? What if Marti became Ms. Baroni’s favorite student?” I couldn’t help thinking.

“Watch your form!”

“Who is Ms. Baroni speaking to?” I wondered. I turned and saw Ms. Baroni looking directly at me. Nothing could have been worse.

At the end of class, I took my bag and hurried outside to find my mom. I had planned to wait and say good-bye to Marti, but now I wanted to be alone. For the next several weeks, Marti continued to impress our teacher with her skills. Honestly, I felt a little jealous (忌妒的) of her. And as Marti turned into a star student, I became less and less excited about tae kwon do.

One day, as we walked down the hallway at school, Marti said, “Ms. Baroni thinks I’m ready to take the test for the next level.”

I was surprised. “It’s harder than you think. Two judges other than Ms. Baroni will give you points,” I said.

Marti looked disappointed (失望的). “You don’t think I’m good enough to take the test yet?”

Every time Jim crossed the street on his way to work, he would see a little girl selling flowers on the street. She sat by a large green board with the names of the flowers and their prices on it. Unfortunately, no one paid attention to her, and she rarely sold anything. Jim wanted to help her, and one day he got his chance. His aunt would retire, and he thought a bouquet (花束) would be a great gift.

“Hello, could you please make me a bouquet of roses?” Jim said as he approached the girl.

The girl didn’t raise her head and just stared at the same spot on the ground. “I’m Cassy. Thank you for buying flowers from me,” she said. “Could you please select the flowers by yourself and give them to me? I will tie them together for you. I can’t see. ”

“Oh, I’m sorry,” Jim said as he picked the flowers and handed them to her. Within several seconds, the girl made a lovely bouquet for Jim.

“Here,” she said, holding the bouquet. “That’ll be $5.”

“Thanks. They’re beautiful,” Jim said and walked away after placing the money in the hat beside Cassy.

The next day, Jim went to work and he decided to have a quick talk with Cassy on the way. However, he didn’t see Cassy where she used to be that morning. He thought she might be late and decided to meet her the next day, but she didn’t show up for the next few days in a row (连续地).

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

After watering the trees and grass in our yard yesterday, I’m pleased to see that it is raining this morning. The tree and grass are dry and they are dying for lack of water. We really need some showers to give the yard a drink and bring freshness to the air and coolness, making the morning pleasant. There is nothing quite like a rainy day in spring and the simple joys it brings.

In fact, as a boy I hated rainy days. They meant that I was stuck in the house and couldn’t go out to play. It was only as the years passed that I realized there could be no water without rain and there could be no life without water. The truth is that rain is a gift from nature. Now I look at each gentle rainfall with a smile and know that nature is giving the world and us the water we need to live.

Of course, we all prefer the sunshine after the rain. The sun gives us light. It energizes us. The white clouds and blue skies just naturally make us feel good. When my thoughts are racing, my mother comes over. “Henry, your morning coffee. It’s raining today. Why don’t you sleep more?” I smile and say, “Mum, it is a nice day. After the rain, the plants in our yard will come alive again. But I have an important thing to do today.” She seems to understand and says, “Go ahead, baby. Have a good day!”

Maybe rainy days give us a chance to rest today, and even rest on the fields for the next day. I know there would be no morning coffee or afternoon tea without rain. I think when I go out to help others in the rain today, I will send thanks to nature. When the rain falls on my head, it brings me great fun, but it also causes trouble for some homeless people on the streets. On the other hand, the rain seems to make me a little sad. I decide to walk out and see if there is anyone in need.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

A 12-year-old boy saw something in a shop window that set his heart racing. It was a jewel box. But the price—five dollars—was far beyond Reuben Earle’s means. However, he opened the door and went inside. Standing proud and straight, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, “But I don’t have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time?”

“I’ll try,” the shopkeeper smiled.

“I will raise the five dollars and not tell anybody,” Reuben said to himself.

Hearing the sound of hammering from a side street, Reuben had an idea. People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails purchased in sacks (麻布袋) from a local factory. Sometimes the sacks were abandoned, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece.

That day he found two sacks and sold to the man in charge of packing nails.

The boy’s hand tightly held the five-cent pieces as he ran home. Near his house stood the ancient barn (谷仓). Reuben found a soda tin and dropped his coins inside. Then he climbed into the top of the barn and hid the tin.

All summer long, despite housework at home Reuben kept to his secret task. Often he was cold, tired and hungry, but the thought of the object in the shop window sustained him.

Mother’s Day had come! He uncovered the tin can, poured the coins out and began to count. He needed 20 cents more. He had to find four more sacks and sell them before the day ended.

Towards evening Reuben arrived at the factory. The sack buyer was about to lock up.

“Mister! Please don’t close up yet.”

The man turned and saw Reuben, dirty and sweat stained.

“Come back tomorrow, boy.”

“Please, Mister. I have to sell the sacks now — please.”
