1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Two poor young women artists, Sue and Johnsy, lived together in a certain part of New York City. They both had much in common and loved each other like two sisters.

In November, pneumonia (肺炎) broke out in that part of the city. Many people caught it, and Johnsy was among them. She lay still in her bed all day, and looked from time to time through the window at the wall of the next house.

One morning the doctor told Sue that there was a slim chance that Johnsy could recover unless she had a strong desire to live. The doctor said, “I’ll do all I can. But you will also have to do your best to give her a strong will to live. If she has hope for a better future, her chances of survival will be better.”

Sue went into Johnsy’s room and began drawing a picture. While drawing, Sue heard Johnsy say something in a low voice. Sue went quickly to the side of her bed. Johnsy’s eyes were wide open. Johnsy was looking out of the window, counting something.

“Twelve,” said Johnsy. A little later she said, “Eleven, ... ten, ... nine,... eight, ... seven.”

Sue looked out. There was a wall covered with an old vine (藤蔓) growing half way up it.

“Six,” said Johnsy after a little while. “They are falling faster now. During the past three days almost a hundred have fallen. And only five are left now.”

“Five what, dear? Tell me, Johnsy.”

“Five leaves,” said Johnsy. “When the last leaf falls, I must go, too. The doctor told you that I would die soon, didn’t he?”

“Don’t be silly!” said Sue. “He said that you would soon get well.”

Sue told Johnsy to go to sleep. Then she went to visit Behrman, a poor old artist whom both Sue and Johnsy were familiar with. He always said that someday he would paint a great masterpiece. When Sue went into his room, she told him about Johnsy and the leaves on the vine.

The old man said, “Do people die because leaves fall from a tree? I’ve never heard such a silly thing. Just take me to her room.” Johnsy was sleeping when they went in. Outside, a cold rain mixed with snow was falling, making it easier for poor old people to get infected with pneumonia.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

One day my dad came back home in his truck and there was a cage in the back. Naturally I was curious, so I went towards the truck when I noticed that there was a small little goat that wasn’t even an adult yet.

I asked my dad and he said that he bought the goat from his friend and he was going to kill it twenty minutes after he brought it home so that we would have a big meal.

My sister was there too and she was strongly for my view. We found out we got really mad at my dad and told him not to kill it. After about 10 minutes of complaining we finally convinced my dad not to kill it because we told him that there was no reason for him to kill the goat himself when he could just buy goat meat at a store.

My parents know some friends that we visit sometimes and their family really likes animals so we decided to give it to them. For about a month, they had the goat as a pet and they also had the same problems as we had because the dad wanted to kill it and eat it but the rest of the family didn’t want it to die. They also were able to persuade him not to do so. They ended up sending the goat to a family member’s farm where it would grow up happily.

Another thing that has happened to influence my belief is that I have a neighbor that really likes hunting.   One day he hunted a deer and brought the body home, but he decided to leave it outside his house for everyone to see. He just left it there as if it were some kind of award that he just won. Sadly little kids started to make fun of the body and pretended to ride on it. They laughed at it and felt no problem with there being a dead deer just laying.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

I should have been born with my fingers permanently glued to a keyboard. Since I was five, I’ve known that I want to be a professional writer: a journalist, a novelist, a modernday Shakespeare, maybe. In my freshman year I tried to figure out what A Midsummer Nights Dream and The Tragedy of Julius Caesar were about. Macbeth was much easier to understand in my sophomore year (大二年级).

However, I’m practically addicted to books, whether I’m reading or writing them. I can’t go a single day without writing something. I have made it a rule to pick up a pen and just let my thoughts out every day.

I can be inspired by anything: an expression, a song and a movie. Once I get inspired, it’s like the wheels turning faster and faster as I think out one possible story after another.

My family is so widespread that whenever I meet with a cousin or an aunt I only vaguely (模糊地) remember; I tell him or her I’m a writer because I know it will distinguish me from all the other kids in the family and make me memorable. I told my relatives about the stories I used to write as a child, the projects I’m working on now, and why I’m working so hard to make a breakthrough in the competitive world of publishing. One aunt hugged me and told me, “Just don’t forget about the rest of us when you become the next J. K. Rowling.”

Smiling, I replied, “Don’t worry, I won’t.” I am confident that I will become the next J. K. Rowling. I have the ambition, the means, and the talent. My English and history teachers don’t praise my writing and tell me I have an innate (与生俱来的) writing talent even though they know how passionate I am about writing, and how that passion slips through my fingertips to the paper.

Paragraph 1:

I don’t really know why I love writing so much.

Paragraph 2:

Maybe I just want to leave my mark on the world since I can’t sing to create a great work of art.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

As a mother, I had two little kids. I had no family to help me where I lived, so I did what any mother would do. Sometimes, I worked over sixty hours a week. I had as many as three jobs at a time. I had no time to take care of myself or accompany (陪伴) my kids and even sometimes had no time to have meals. It wasn’t easy, but I never missed a bill or never had a late payment. The only problem was that I was working myself to death.

One Easter weekend, I worked thirty hours from Friday to Sunday, with little sleep. On Sunday night, I fell into bed tired. My next memory was waking up in an ambulance (救护车) with two nurses beside me. I had no memory of how I got there, and I had a serious headache. They kept asking me what kind of things had happened. There was nothing in my mind. All I remember was being angry and helpless.

They took me to the hospital, and during the days there, they thought that I had been ill because of being too tired. Yet, I kept telling the nurses to call another worker who worked with me in the same place to open the business because I couldn’t get there. When I left the hospital, I began to rethink everything. I had to go on supporting my family, but I was going to find a better way to do it. I needed to be home more for my kids, work fewer hours, and still make ends meet. The only way was to find a better-paying job. Luckily, I did find a better job.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I think that you are never going to be as happy as you were when you were little. There are no worries when you are little. The things that worried you most are not important things. My most memorable moments happened when I was a child. I can not remember a lot of them because I was very little but I remember the most exciting thing for me at that time.

Some of my friends that I have now have been my best friends since childhood. It is really nice to still have them in my life. Most of them I know are from school but some of them are because of our mothers. And it is really strange to think that you have spent all your life with them. We often went out for sightseeing during holidays, which really made us kids happy and helped establish sincere friendship.

One trip that I remember a lot was when I went with one of my best friend Kate to a cruise (乘船游览) to the Caribbean islands in a summer holiday when I was 10 years old. Going there was a perfect thing that I’d always dreamed of. On the way to the cruise, we were very excited. We both were going with our families. We were together all of the time. Sometimes she came to sleep in my room and sometimes I went to hers. When we got down in the islands we also spent all of the time together because our mothers are also very good friends. On the morning of the last day of the trip the cruise stopped near a mall to let tourists go into the mall to do some shopping. Both Kate’s and my parents were busy in choosing clothes and we showed no interest in clothes, so we felt a little bored, having nothing to do.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I am a wolf. The forest was my home. I lived there and I cared about it. I tried to keep it neat and clean.

Then one sunny day, while I was cleaning up some garbage a camper(露营者)had left behind,

I heard footsteps. I leaped behind a tree and saw a rather plain little girl coming down the trail carrying a basket. I was suspicious of this little girl right away because she was dressed funny —all in red, and her head covered up so it seemed like she didn’t want people to know who she was.

Naturally, I stopped to check her out. She gave me a song sand dance about going to her grandmother’s house with a basket of lunch. She appeared to be a basically honest person, but she was in my forest and she certainly looked suspicious with that strange clothes of hers. So I decided to teach her just how serious it is to prance(腾跃;欢跃)through the forest unannounced and dressed funny.

I let her go on her way, but I ran ahead to her grandmother’s house. When I saw that nice old woman, I explained my problem, and she agreed that her granddaughter needed to learn a lesson, all right. The old woman agreed to stay out of sight until I called her. Actually, she hid under the bed.

When the girl arrived, I invited her into the bedroom where I was in the bed, dressed like the grandmother. The girl came in all rosy-checked and said something nasty(肮脏的)about my big ears and made another insulting crack about my bulging(膨胀的)eyes. Now you can see how I was beginning to feel about this girl who put on such a nice front, but was apparently a very nasty person. Still,I've made it a policy to turn the other cheek,so I told her that my big eyes helped me to see her better.

“Are you crazy? You finally retired! Why would you want to work in the hospital again? “My friends couldn’t understand why, after forty years of nursing and four of retirement, I would return to nursing. Actually, I didn’t understand either. Tired of the pressure of the job, I had eagerly and joyfully retired with no plans to practice nursing again.

Then one day a friend who was also a retired nurse told me how much she loved being a part of the Volunteer Registered Nurse program. “You help nurses care for patients at the bedside,” she said, “and the best part is that you do so at your own speed.”

She directed me to the program at our local hospital, and after completing lots of paperwork and a few classes, I was excited about getting back to the bedside. On my first day, after basic training, I stepped onto the surgical (外科的) floor to be welcomed with smiles and hellos from the staff. I checked with the charge nurse to see who needed my help the most or if there was a particular patient requiring some extra care.

She smiled, “I am so glad to see you. I can’t believe you are here to help me.” Taking a deep breath, she added, “Mr. Jones needs a bath and some extra attention. He is so disappointed he's not going home today.”

I proceeded (前往) to the patient’s room to see a sad man staring out of the window.

I gave him my biggest smile. “Hi, I’m Mary, a volunteer RN and I’m here to take special care of you this morning.”

I asked if he would like to take a shower and he shook his head.

“Taking a shower and putting on clean pajamas (睡衣) may make you feel better,” I encouraged.

10 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节和给定段落开头语进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

When I was six years old, I visited my grandfather’s farm in Kansas and he sent me into the woods to gather pecans (胡桃) for us to enjoy later. The pecans were about the size of a man’s thumbnail and just about the tastiest snack I’d ever had.

However, pecan picking was really tiring and my little bucket was only half full after working hard for a long time. I thought I wouldn’t let Grandpa down. Just then something caught my eye. A large brown squirrel was a few feet away. I watched as he picked up a pecan, hurried to a tree, jumped up to the trunk and disappeared in a large hole. A moment later the squirrel popped back out and climbed down to the ground to pick up another nut. Once again, he took the pecan back to his hiding place inside the hollow of the tree.

Not so secret anymore, I thought. I dashed over to the tree and looked into the hole. It was filled with pecans! Golden pecans were right there for taking. This was my chance. Handful by handful, I scooped all of those pecans into my bucket. Now it was almost full! I was so proud of myself that I couldn’t wait to show Grandpa all the pecans.

I ran back and shouted, “Look at all the pecans!” He looked into the bucket and asked, “Well, well, how did you find so many?” I told him how I’d followed the squirrel and taken the pecans from his hiding place.

Grandpa congratulated me on how smart I’d been in observing the squirrel and his habits. Then he did something that surprised me. He handed the bucket back to me and put his arm gently around my shoulders.
