Long ago, there lived two brothers who were very poor. They lived in small houses at opposite sides of their wheat field. Each year the brothers divided the grain they had grown into two equal parts. Although they worked hard from sunup to sundown, they hardly had enough to eat. In spite of this, they were happy because of their great love for each other.
But one year, Simon, the younger brother felt a great sadness. He was worried about his older brother, Ruben. Ruben was alone in the world, with neither wife nor children. “Who will care for him when he gets old and can no longer work? If only he had some money to save for his old age! It isn’t fair that we share the harvest equally. But he will not accept gifts from me. What shall I do?” he thought.
At the same time, Ruben was sitting under a tree, thinking deeply. He thought his brother, Simon, needed to support a family. “I have no family. It isn’t fair that we share the harvest equally. Surely he deserves more than I! I must think of a plan to help him.”
That midnight, Ruben went quietly to his barn (粮仓) where he filled a sack (麻袋) with wheat and put it on his shoulder. Then he crossed the field to his brother’s house and secretly placed his wheat with Simon’s.

I sit at that same desk, and stare at the blank sheet in the typewriter. I wait patiently for ideas to come to me, exam questions for a test I will give my students tomorrow. My wife is off to a reunion somewhere, but I am not alone. Our two children keep me company. Ten-month-old Edward cooperates to some degree. But our 22-month-old daughter Meghan’s plan has conflicted with mine. She follows a daily routine that is both time-consuming and challenging. Her constant companion is Dumpty, a shapeless doll.
Within 15 minutes she appears before me with her shoes and socks in her hands. “Don’t even ask, Meghan. Not today.” I know the pattern. First the shoes and socks. Then the stroller (童车). And pretty soon we’re in the park. She’ll want me to pick her a dandelion (蒲公英). Hearing my words, she reaches up to the typewriter keys and depresses four of them at the same time. “No, thank you, Meghan. Daddy’s seen your work. He’ll do it himself.”
Then she rests her head on my leg, just as she did when she first learned to walk. Finally she leaves, upset. I watch her sit on the floor and try for several minutes to put on one of her socks.
Seeing me looking, she pats the chair, the comfortable one we sit in together to watch TV or to read, and quickly gathers her books: The Poky Little Puppy, The Magic School Bus, The Cat in the Hat, and even that ancient copy of National Geographic with the penguin on the cover…She’s got them all. With her free hand, she pulls my arm.
“No, Meghan,” I say angrily. “Not now. Go away and leave me alone. And take your library with you. “That does it; she leaves. She makes no further attempt to bother me. I can finish the test easily now without interruption-no one trying to climb onto my lap; no extra fingers helping me type.

I woke up without an alarm. I didn't need one; it was the first day of school. I jumped from my bed and headed straight into the bathroom in excitement, trying to decide whether to wear the pink blouse with my grey pants or the black cotton top with the white trousers.
I turned on the shower and let the warm water run from the top of my head and down my shoulders and toes before deciding on the white trousers with the black cotton shirt. “Black is grown up,” I told myself.
My lunch, packed the night before for the big day, even had my name on it. I put it into the bag I bought with my sister over the summer. She said it would look great if I wore it with my fashionable multi-colored sandals(凉鞋)that I also picked up with her on a previous shopping trip. “I guarantee all the cool kids will like them!” she promised me.
Standing at my breakfast counter, I was not so sure whether I should be wearing this crazy set. However, the sensible side of my brain took over and told me, “Too late now. It is 7:03...” Pushing the last bite of bread into my mouth, I ran out of the door.
The cool leather chair in the car made me shiver (颤抖)slightly as I desperately tried to think of something amusing to impress the children with whom I would spend the next 180 days.
It was 7:48 when I arrived at the school, and a crowd of students had gathered outside the old brick house. Most of the kids looked happy to be there. That was a good sign! Taking a deep breath, I headed straight for the crowd. My smile was tight. Walking through parents, teachers and kids, I was encircled and soon everyone wanted to know how I spent my summer and where I bought my trousers.
Paragraph 1:
The first bell, however, stopped the conversation.
