Growing up, I’ve always been compared to my mother in appearance, personality and for my caring nature. It’s my favorite praise because my mom is the most influential woman in my life. The world has considered healthcare workers as modern heroes, which is a truly deserved title, but my mom proved her hero status to me years ago.
My mother worked as a registered nurse at Temple University Hospital. Recently, she was offered a position in Temple’s cardiac intensive care unit. During the past two years of the pandemic, my mom has been consumed with work as a nurse at Temple University Hospital, caring for hundreds of COVID-19 patients. She contracted the virus twice, resulting in the loss of her taste and smell. Although her work can be an emotional rollercoaster (过山车), she never faltered in her desire to help people.
Before working as a nurse, when I was four and my sister was two years old, my mom was a stay-at-home mom. She often got her hands full at home and began a part-time cashier position at Toys “R” Us, but she knew she had a more fulfilling career path ahead of her. She was driven by her passion to help people and enrolled at the Community College of Philadelphia in January 2009 to complete an associate degree in Culture, Science, and Technology.
As young kids, my sister and I tended to get in the way of my mom’s schoolwork, often distracting her by making messes around the house and constantly yelling out her name. Still, we sometimes managed to help her.
During the holidays, our house was decorated with Christmas-themed stuffed animals (动物玩偶) on our couch. One day, my sister and I saw my mom talking to them and we thought she looked silly, so I asked her what she was talking about. She said she was giving the stuffed animals an important presentation because she was anxious about doing it in front of her classmates.

4 . Handing power tools over to young students could result in some disastrous situations. But if those tools are combined with effective supervision and teaching, the students can learn valuable new skills and might even find a new career path.
One such program, in Washington, D. C., aims to teach woodworking and finished carpentry skills to teens and young adults. It includes a woodshop, completely housed inside a truck, which acts as a kind of “classroom on wheels.”
The Mobile Woodshop program was started by the nonprofit Zenith Community Arts Foundation. Margery Goldberg, Zenith's director, is an artist, wood sculptor, She had long dreamed of creating a mobile woodshop to asst students. That dream finally came true in 2020, when the city gave her. a large grant for the program. Goldberg believes woodshop programs can help prepare the next generation of woodworkers.
Students at Ballou can learn the same skills as a beginning carpenter would. These include cutting, marking, measuring, nailing and how to use different tools. The truck is equipped with all the instructional materials and tools necessary to operate as a complete mobile classroom. Mobile workstations are also available so students can work on projects outside the truck.
If students pass the class, they can seek to enter the union apprenticeship (学徒) program Instead of a usual four-year apprenticeship, graduates of the mobile woodshop can finish in less time.
Joe Largess is a teacher at the woodshop. He said much of the class centers on teaching students “soft skills” These are skills that are desirable in all jobs, such as teamwork, being able to follow instructions and arriving to work on time. Students also learn basic skills like math and how to read a ruler.
Largess said the class at Ballou seeks “to help some people who wouldn’t have the chance to even get into the apprenticeship program, and give them a leg up”. That, he added, can “hopefully help them with a better future”.

9 . Growing up in Haiti, Phedjina Jean remembers the struggles she and her family went through to access basic services taken for granted in America. Her long-term goal is to become a physician and to set up a health clinic in her small town in Haiti. Now as a student at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Jean is looking to use her experience as an immigrant (移民) growing up in an underdeveloped country to help children growing up in Haiti in a similar situation as herself.
In high school, she was accepted by a nonprofit called A Leadership Journey, which helps teenage people of color go on international trips. In 2019, Jean visited Kenya with the group and visited local schools and villages, assisting locals in education, healthcare and community organization.
“The experience I had in Kenya was eye-opening. I saw so much of my childhood in Kenya. When we went to the school, the children were playing a game, and I was the only American who was familiar with it, since we used to play it back in Haiti,” Jean said.
That experience has motivated Jean to seek more international experience as she works on reaching her goals. She is currently aiming to visit South Africa in December, but unlike her first trip, she will need to raise the funds herself. She has tried to raise the $3,000 necessary for the trip on website GoFundMe.
Jean would be taking the trip with International Children's Outreach, which hosts college students from different countries and encourages improving the lives of poor children and young people around the world while integrating the college students into the education process. Jean said that she would put together a STEM education plan and share it with students and educators while assisting in schools and the local community.
“My parents say to always remember where you came from. That doesn't just mean Haiti; it can mean anywhere in the world where people confront challenges due to poverty. I want to be able to share my experience with children from around the world,” Jean said.
