2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

In the beautiful city of San Francisco, it was spring. The flowers were blooming, the sun was shining, and the birds were singing their beautiful song. In a nearby basketball stadium, there was a basketball championship going on. Jesse like his elder brother Timmy, was one of the best in the competition; he scored most of his team's points, but his team did not like that. Jesse never passed the ball. His coach always told him that it was a team game and not a one-man show.

“Jesse, pass the ball more, ” insisted Coach Tyler.

“Coach, I am good; I can win this whole tournament by myself if I want to, ” responded Jesse.

“Jesse, you need to learn to respect the game! ” said Coach Tyler.

“I don't need to respect anything,” said Jesse.

“Okay then, and I don't need you in my team, Jesse. Get out of here! ” said Coach Tyler.

“Fine! ” replied Jesse angrily.

At school Jesse's friends Zack, Christopher, and De'Aaron were trying to calm down Jesse, who was still angry about what happened the previous day. Jesse was usually good in school, but after he was kicked out of the team, his attitude changed. He started doing poorly; he got in trouble and failed classes. Jesse tried to join other basketball teams, but he could not because their list was filled or he was too young or too old. Finally, Jesse was recommended a team by Zack.

“Thanks, bro, ” said Jesse happily.

“No problem, Jesse, ” responded Zack. Five months later...

Jesse started passing the ball more, but he still averaged 26.4 points per game. Jesse enjoyed how he played, but he did not like that he was coming off the bench. Jesse proved that he was a star on the court, but still the coach said that he was better coming off the bench. “Coach, I think I have shown that I can start next game, ”said Jesse calmly. “No, Jesse, you are not good. ” responded the coach. “But...” said Jesse before the coach interrupted him. “No, Jesse! ”Jesse started getting mad. “Coach, you need to start me. I’m the best in this team,” said Jesse arrogantly(傲慢地). “Jesse, how about you just leave? ”bellowed(吼叫) the coach.

3 . 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Most of us think that the world’s oldest color is black or dark gray. However, scientists have discovered that bright pink is the oldest     1    (know) color. They looked at the 1.1 billion-year-old rock deep beneath the Sahara Desert.     2    (make) powder from the rock, then they found the bright pink color. Dr. Nur Gueneli     3     comes from the Australian National University led the research. She said it     4    (produce) by ancient organisms that lived in old oceans. At that time, tiny organisms were     5     most common life forms on Earth.

Dr. Gueneli said her first     6    (react) was complete amazement. She said her team thought the rock powder might turn black in their experiments. However, it turned pink. Another researcher said, “Dr. Gueneli came into my office and     7    (show) me this bright pink material, saying,'Look at this. It turned out to be a real color, 1.1 billion years old.'” The rock could contain other colors, from blood red to deep purple. Gueneli accounted     8     the importance of her findings. She said, “Imagine you could find a piece of fossilized (石化的) dinosaur skin that still remains     9    (it) original color---green or blue. That is     10    (actual) the type of discovery that we’ve made.”

4 . Astronauts traveling in space meet forms of radiation(辐射)that are uncommon on Earth. Some of this radiation has been shown to be harmful to human health. It is linked to cancers and heart problems. Yet a new American study suggests the radiation does not shorten astronauts' lives.

Researchers studied nearly 60 years of health records and other data about male astronauts from the United States. They then compared this data with information about a group of men who are in good health, richer than most Americans and receive good health care-professional athletes. The study found that neither group has higher rates of dying at a young age. In fact, both groups generally live longer than other Americans.

Astronauts are usually well-educated, earn more money and are in better physical conditions than the average Americans Some earlier research has linked being an astronaut to a lower risk of early death, the researchers noted. The findings were reported in the medical journal Occupational&Environmental Medicine.

Much of the existing research on mortality rates(死亡率) in astronauts has not yet explored the mental and physical demands of this job. There also has not been a lot of research on whether astronauts show what is known as the "healthy worker effect". This effect leads people with employment of any kind to have fewer medical problems than people who are unable to work, said Robert Reynolds.

Reynolds said, "The challenge has always been to understand if astronauts are as healthy as they would be had they been otherwise comparably employed but had never gone to space at all. To do this, we need to find a group that is comparable on several important factors."

1. How did researchers carry out their study?
A.By doing interviews.B.By analyzing some factors.
C.By comparing different data.D.By doing experiments in the lab.
2. What can we team from the text?
A.All radiation is harmful to human health.
B.Athletes tend to be poorer than most Americans.
C.Healthy worker effect makes working people healthier.
D.Research has explored the mental and physical demands of being astronauts.
3. What can be inferred from Reynolds' words?
A.They are determined to face the challenge.
B.The research is almost impossible to conduct.
C.Several important factors hold back the research.
D.Astronauts are healthier than they haven’t been astronauts.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Astronauts--Healthy or Otherwise
B.Astronauts Are as Healthy as Athletes

6 . As 17-year-old Norwood drove through St. Petersburg, Florida, last February, the laughter and chatter from the four teenage girls inside her car quickly gave way to sharp cries. A car behind heavily hit them, sending their black car into a tree five meters away. As smoke rose from the other car, a bystander (旁观者) shouted, “It’s about to blow up! Get out!”

Terrified but not hurt, she got out through the window. Along with two of her friends, who’d also managed to free themselves, she ran for her life. But halfway down the street, she realized that her best friend, Simmons, wasn’t with them. Norwood ran back and found Simmons stuck in the back seat. “She wasn’t moving,” Norwood told Inside Edition. She threw open the back door and pulled her friend out, trying to avoid the broken glass.

She dragged Simmons to safety and placed her on the ground. “I put my head against her chest. No sign of life. That’s when I started CPR (心肺复苏术).” Norwood, who longed to have a career in medicine, had passed the national CPR test just the day before.

Looking down at her dying friend, Norwood knew she had only a little time to practice what she’d learned. She started pumping Simmons’s chest and breathing into her friend’s mouth. No response. She tried again and again. Slowly, Simmons began coughing and opening her mouth for air. The CPR worked! Soon, doctors arrived and rushed Simmons to the hospital. And then she heard how her best friend had saved her life. “I wasn’t shocked,” Simmons told CNN. “She will always help any way she can.”

In 1968, I was a student at the Sophia Hagopian High School in Beirut, Lebanon. One day, I went to the head teacher’s office and told him that my parents could not pay the tuition (学费). Although I was the top student in my class, I was sent home because of being short of money. This was a heartbreaking experience for me, as I really wanted to continue my education.

I went home and spent my day at my father’s tire-repair shop. One day, a very old man saw me in the shop and wondered why I was not in school. I told him the reason. He offered to help by calling the head teacher of the Hovaguimian-Manougian High School and asking him to accept me without tuition. The next day, I took a city bus to the school and went to the head teacher’s office. However, when I told the head teacher the reason for my visit, he shouted at me that there was no free tuition. I immediately turned around and rushed back to my home.

On the third day, one of my classmates from Sophia Hagopian High School came to inform me that the head teacher had sent him to tell me that I should come back to school and register (登记). When I arrived at school, I told the registrar that I could not pay the tuition. She said that my tuition had been fully paid. I asked the registrar who paid for my tuition so that I can thank him, I was told that the kind person wanted to remain unknown.

I went to my classroom, but kept wondering who was the person that gave me the golden opportunity to continue my education. I went back to the head teacher's office after classes and begged the registrar to tell me the name of the kind person. Finally, on the condition that I wouldn’t go and express the thanks, she told me that it was my English teacher, Olivia Balian. I promised that I would not talk to her.

9 . Children’s heavy digital media use is associated with a risk of being overweight later in adolescence. A recent study shows that six hours of leisure-time physical activity per week at the age of 11 reduces the risk of being overweight at 14 years of age associated with heavy use of digital media.

Obesity (肥胖) in children and adolescents is one of the most significant health-related challenges globally. A study carried out by the Folkhalsan Research Center investigated whether a link exists between the digital media use of Finnish school-age children and the risk of being overweight later in adolescence. In addition, the study looked into whether children’s physical activity has an effect on this potential link.

The study involved 4,661 children who reported how much time they spent on sedentary (久坐的) digital media use and physical activity outside school hours. The study indicated that heavy use of digital media at 11 years of age was associated with a heightened risk of being overweight at 14 years of age in children who reported taking part in under six hours per week of physical activity in their leisure time. In children who reported being physically active for six or more hours per week, such a link was not observed.

The study also took into account other factors potentially impacting obesity, such as childhood eating habits and the amount of sleep, as well as the amount of digital media use and physical activity in adolescence. In spite of the confounding (混杂的) factors, the protective role of childhood physical activity in the connection between digital media use in childhood and being overweight later in life was successfully confirmed.

“The effect of physical activity on the association between digital media use and being overweight has not been further investigated in follow-up studies so far,” says Postdoctoral Researcher Elina Engberg. “In this study, the amount of physical activity and use of digital media was reported by the children themselves, and the level of their activity was not surveyed, so there is a need for further studies.”

1. The subjects of the study were ________.
A.surveyed three years later after the first one
B.those who kept sitting and used digital media a lot
C.4,661 school-aged children suffering from obesity
D.lacking in sufficient leisure-time physical activity
2. What does the underlined word “heightened” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.MajorB.Particular.
C.Increasing.D.Slight.
3. What was the focus of the recent study?
A.Different factors contributing to kids’ overweight problem.
B.The influence of childhood eating habits on children’s obesity.
C.The relationship among kids’ exercise, digital media use and obesity.
D.Children’s academic challenges resulting from heavy digital media use.
4. What might be talked about in the following paragraph?
A.Reasons for carrying out further studies.
B.Guidelines for children and adolescents.
C.Approaches to solving teens’ weight problems.
D.Connections between obesity and physical activity.

10 . Which is better for Earth: an electric or gas-powered vehicle? The answer to this question might seem blindingly obvious. Of course electric cars must be better for the environment, because they don’t give off greenhouse gases as people drive. However, electric vehicles (EVs) aren’t perfect, and they come with their own set of polluting problems. Their batteries require a large amount of energy to produce.

Battery production is just one part of an electric car’s life span. A study looked at the entire life cycle of an EV’s emissions(排放),from mining the metals for the batteries to producing the electricity needed to power them, and then compared this with the average emissions of a gas-powered vehicle. The team found that when EVs are charged with coal-powered electricity, they’re actually worse for the environment than gas-powered cars.

“Only when connected to the clean energy do EVs have an advantage over the gas-powered cars on a greenhouse gas basis,” said Colin Sheppard, an expert in energy and transportation systems. That’s why more and more countries are decreasing the power supply from coal. In China, the national grid is improving with more efforts in renewable energy. For example, it has twice as much wind energy capacity as the U.S. and it builds more solar panels per year than any other countries.

Sheppard has modelled a future in which all cars are electric. “We want to understand what it might be like if all passenger vehicles were electrified.” The model suggests that if all vehicles in the U.S. were electric, greenhouse-gas emissions would be 46% less every year. This reduction could be increased even further if those vehicles were using a technique known as “smart charging” in which cars are recharged at chosen times (often at night) to reduce the cost of electricity.

In short, it’s far easier to argue for buying an EV than a gas-powered vehicle. But what about the cost? Aren’t electric vehicles too expensive for most people?

1. In which case do EVs get more heavy-polluted than gas-powered cars?
A.Being powered only by batteries.
B.Using coal-powered electricity.
C.Starting to give off greenhouse gases.
D.Replacing gas-powered vehicles entirely.
2. How does Sheppard’s model show the reduction of greenhouse-gas emissions?
A.With a discussion.B.With an examination.
C.With a comparison.D.With a questionnaire.
3. What can be inferred from the text?
A.China is making advances in renewable energy.
B.Compared with gas-powered cars, EVs are at an advantage.
C.There is still room for the development of EVs.
D.It’s not a challenge to choose between EVs and gas-powered cars.
4. What might the paragraph following the passage be about?
A.Inventing green gas-powered vehicles.
B.Developing environment-friendly grids.
C.Getting rid of fossil energy like coal and oil.
D.Making electric vehicles more affordable.
