1 . When kids melt down in the middle of a crowded store or at a holiday dinner with extended family, it can be extremely frustrating. But parents can help kids learn self-control and teach them how to respond without just acting on impulse (冲动).
Teaching self-control is one of the most important things that parents can do for their kids because these skills are some of the most important for success later in life. By learning self-control, kids can make appropriate decisions and respond to stressful situations in ways that can yield positive outcomes. For example, if you say that you’re not serving ice cream until after dinner, your child may cry, plead, or even scream in the hopes that you will give in. But with self-control, your child can understand that a temper tantrum (发脾气) means you’ll take away the ice cream for good and that it’s wiser to wait patiently.
Difficult as it may be, resist the urge to yell when you’re disciplining your kids. Instead, be persistent and matter of fact. During a child’s meltdown, stay calm and explain that yelling, throwing a tantrum, and slamming doors are unacceptable behaviors that have consequences. Your actions will show that tantrums won’t get kids the upper hand. For example, if your child gets, upset in the grocery store after you’ve explained why you won’t buy candy, don’t give in – thus demonstrating that the tantrum was both unacceptable and ineffective. Also, consider speaking to your child’s teachers about classroom settings and appropriate behavior expectations. Ask if problem-solving is taught or demonstrated in school.
And model good self-control yourself. If you’re in an annoyed situation in front of your kids, tell them why you’re frustrated and then discuss potential solutions to the problem. For example, if you’ve misplaced your keys, instead of getting upset, tell your kids the keys are missing and then search for them together. If they don’t turn up, take the next constructive step. Show that good emotional control and problem solving are the ways to deal with a difficult situation.

My job is just one of the essential jobs, a sanitation(卫生系统)engineer, not a glamorous one, but is considered the alternative. Of course, I never regard it as an ashamed task to be in my position. About the second week of the lockdown because of the Covid-19, I was having trouble finding a sanitizing spray(消毒喷雾)for my truck. The next morning on my way to work at 4 a. m., I stopped at one of the few stores which were open that early, hoping to purchase some. However, it was only open for the police and medical personnel. “Look at my vest please,” I begged to the clerk, “I’m not just buying it for myself.” “I’m more than sorry, sir. But this is just the regulation, and I really can’t help.” replied the smiling girl. As I turned to head back to my car with disappointment, I nearly broke down.
Coming out of the store, my stomach began to call for energy support. I stopped at a 7/11 and ordered an everything bagel(硬面包)with cream cheese to satisfy my poor stomach and my empty heart. It was toasty warm, and I couldn’t wait to dig in. But as I left the store with a little joy coming sweetly from the bagel, I noticed a scene that an old man was sitting at the bus stop, in rags. Knowing that it would probably be his only warm meal of the day, I gave him the bagel without any hesitation. Just when I was ready to turn around for another same bagel, something warming my heart came into being. Another customer, a gentle lady, from the 7/11 offered me half of her bagel. “We everyone should be taken care of at some certain moment.” she said with a tender sweet voice as I smiled to thank her sincerely. I was delighted because I realized that in one way or another, we were all looked after.

4 . A water-proof drone (无人机) is being used by Australian scientists to collect the highly-treasured snot (鼻涕) of migrating whales. The snot is rich with fresh DNA, viruses and bacteria, and is collected by a drone that hovers over the blowholes of humpback whales as they set off their annual journey along Australia’s east coast.
Vanessa Pirotta, a marine biologist at Macquarie University, says that snot indicates the health of the whale. She states, “It is the juicy biological mixture that you see as a humpback whale takes a breath when they surface from the water. It sounds like sounds of sharp breaths as a whale breathes, because, unlike sharks or other fish, they are mammals like humans and they have two openings for breathing on their back as well. So, as they take a breath, there are a lot of lung bacteria coming out from their lungs, which we can collect to provide a brief introduction of whale health.”
Australian researchers have attached a petri dish that is used in scientific tests to a drone which flies through the whale’s nasal mist (鼻腔喷出雾). Vanessa Pirotta added, “As a whale comes to take a breath, you can actually see it coming to the surface on really good weather days. That is the time—the drone lowers, and the petri dish is then opened and the drone is flown through the densest part of the whale snot, collecting the sample in the petri dish. Now once this happens the lid is shut and the drone is flown back to the research vessel and we collect the sample to later process it in the laboratory.”
The research could help to solve one of the mysteries of another magnificent creature of the deep sea—the southern right whale. Its numbers have recovered on Australia’s west coast since hunting was outlawed but its population on the eastern seaboard remains stubbornly low.

6 . Saturn (土星) is famous for its lovely rings, but a new study suggests the planet has spent most of its 4.5 billion years without them. That’s because the rings are likely only 10 million to 100million years old, according to a newly published report in the journal Science that’s based on findings from NASA’s Cassini probe (探测器).
Cassini spent some 13 years orbiting Saturn before diving and impacting into its atmosphere. During its final orbits, the spacecraft dove between the planet and its rings. That let scientists measure the gravitational effect of the rings and get a good estimate of the ring material's mass. What they found is that it’s only about 40 percent of the mass of Saturn’s moon Mimas. This small mass suggests that the rings are relatively young.
“There’s no huge amount of massive material hidden in the rings that we can’t see,” says Philip Nicholoson, a planetary scientist,“The rings are almost pure ice.” He says the relative youthfulness of Satum’s ring system is something that scientists have come to suspect only recently. “It was easier to believe that it formed at the same time as Saturn and its satellites did,” Nicholson says. “It’s hard to understand how they could have formed that recently.” It’s possible that the rings are the remains of a comet (彗星) or some other icy object that made a chance encounter with Saturn and got torn up, he says. Or, perhaps one of Saturn’s icy moons got whacked by an impact with a large comet.
Whatever happened, it’s looking more and more likely that Saturn’s splendid rings are a temporary phenomenon that humans are lucky to get to see at all. Previous measurements from Cassini helped show that the rings may be disappearing at a rapid speed, as dusty ice particles (颗粒) get pulled down to Saturn by its gravity. In another 100 million years, Saturn’s most unique feature might be gone.
1. How did scientists estimate the ring material’s mass?A.By analyzing the age of the rings. |

8 . On Septenber 29, 2019, two days before the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, 89-year-old Yuan Longping was awarded the Medal of the Republic, the country’s highest honor for his extraordinary contribution to the nation’s food security, the development of agricultural science, and global food supply. “A tiny grain could either save a country or bring it down. The importance of food security should never be underestimated,” said Yuan, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering.
The 2019 State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report shows that over 820 million people are suffering from hunger and the world is facing huge challenges in achieving the sustainable development goal of zero hunger by 2030. According to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization, there are four factors in food security: physical availability of food, economic and physical access to food, food use, and stability of the other three factors over time. Between 1979 and 2005, China received food aid from the UN World Food Program (WFP) which benefited over 30 million people nationwide. Starting from 2016, however, the partnership between China and the WFP witnessed a total transformation: China turned from a major aid recipient to a leading aid donor, supporting millions of malnourished (营养不良的) people beyond its borders.
Innovation (创新) in science and technology is one of the driving forces behind this change. Yuan is considered a pioneer in the field of food science and technology. He has dedicated himself to the research, application and promotion of hybrid rice for decades. The super hybrid rice that his team cultivated can yield nearly 18.1 ton per hectare, setting a new world record. Hence, Yuan is regarded as the “father of hybrid rice.”
“Food safety is of very importance to the national economy and people’s livelihood. As an agronomist, I felt that I should focus on this area,” Yuan told CGTN. “My biggest hope is to make sure that the ‘rice bowl’ is firmly held in our own hands so that we, as a country, can feed ourselves.”
1. What do we know about Yuan from the first paragraph?A.He gained much support from WFP. |

It was dark, cold and raining on December 24. James left his office and walked slowly across the street to the parking place. He was very tired. He took out his car key and put down his umbrella. He put the key into the lock and turned it. Nothing happened. The door would not open. Then James realised that it was the wrong car. His car was red, but this one was dark blue. “Oh dear! I must have parked in a different place this morning,” thought he. Putting up his umbrella, he set off to look for his car. The rain poured down and the evening got colder and colder.
Having walked round all the side streets, James didn’t find his car. He was exhausted and angry. “Someone must have stolen my car,” he thought. “Now I shall have to go to the police station and report it.” The policeman there was very helpful. He wrote down a description of James car and then took his address and telephone number. As James was leaving, the policeman wished him a merry Christmas.
“Christmas!” thought James. “Oh no! I’ve forgotten all about Christmas. I haven’t bought my wife a present and now all the shops are shut. What shall I do?” When waiting for the bus, he got wetter and more miserable (难受的). He had no umbrella and the rain flowed down into his collar. He felt like bursting into tears.
When James got home, he found his wife standing on a chair and looking for something in a very high cupboard. “What are you doing, Jessica?” he asked. “The big gold star for the Christmas tree,” Jessica replied. “Just a moment. I’ll go into the garage (车库) and fetch the stepladder (梯子) for you,” said James. When James saw .the well-decorated Christmas tree and lots of presents under it, he felt even more unhappy. “What a lovely tree!” he thought as he went downstairs, “I haven’t even got one present for Jessica. I’ve lost my car and I’m completely wet. I must have lost my umbrella, too.”
