A Father’s Day Surprise

“Mano, do you know when Father’s Day is celebrated?” Ali asked his sister.

“Yes, it is going to be celebrated on June 19 this year. Yesterday my friend and I were talking about it.” Mano replied.

“Do you have any idea how we should celebrate this day and make it memorable for Dad?” Ali asked.

“Hmm... I was thinking about it too and have some ideas.” Mano answered excitedly. “What are you kids talking about?” their mum asked, entering their room.

“Mum, we were wondering about how to celebrate Father’s Day.” Mano said.

“Oh, I am surprised you kids remembered! Well, I am thinking of cooking some favorite dishes for your father. You both should think of ways to decorate the house beautifully.”Mum said.

“That would be great!”said Mano and Ali together. Both of them got up smiling, thinking of hundreds of ways to celebrate Father’s Day. Mum went to the kitchen, and Mano and Ali started doing their homework. But soon Ali noticed Mano deep in thought so he asked what the matter was. “Ali, I was thinking that our parents do everything for us and in return they want nothing. Isn’t it bad that we never think about them and are always concerned about our needs?” Mano replied. “Sometimes we are so busy with our lives that we don’t pay proper attention to our parents. We should listen to whatever they say properly and answer them. We must also study hard to get good grades.” Ali nodded.

The next day, all three of them, Mano, Ali and their mum, got busy preparing their surprise celebration for Father’s Day. Mano drew a family picture with her crayons, Ali bought balloons and candles and began writing a poem which he planned to sing that day. In short, a lot of things were being planned and prepared.

George was so excited he could hardly wait to get to the store. He walked so fast that his sister Beth had to run. “Do you have to hurry like that?” she puffed. On his way from school he had seen that baseball cap in Rogers’ store window. Only a dollar and this was the last cap! George had looked at the cap a long time. He wanted it more than anything. Every boy at school had one.

George thought of his piggy hank, into which he put every coin for running errands (差使) for his family and neighbors.

George raced home, not stopping for anything. He held the fat iron pig, opened it carefully, and poured out the coins. Ten...twenty...thirty...ninety cents. If only he had one more dime (一角硬币)!

Lost in thought, George stared out the window. “What’s wrong, George?” asked Mother George told about the money and the cap. “If you give me what you have, I’ll add a dime,” Mother said, handing him a dollar bill.

George jumped up. “Oh, thanks, Mom. That’s great!” George gave all his coins to Mother and took the dollar bill. And away went George and Beth to the store with the dollar bill in George’s pocket.

They turned the last comer. Ahead was a group of boys and girls, talking heatedly and looking down at the sidewalk.

One of the children was Ronny, a new boy who had been in this town only a short time. Ronny’s father had been sick, so there wasn’t much money for extras - like baseball cap.

“What’s the matter?” Beth asked, anxiously.

“It’s Ronny,” answered one of them. “He’s been working and finally saved up a whole dollar, and now it’s lost!”

George went over to Ronny.

“We’ll all help look. We’ll find it!”

“I was going to get that last cap in Rogers’ window. I wanted it a lot. With that cap, I could join them.” Ronny said slowly.

Suddenly George remembered how Ronny had watched the fellows playing baseball, his eyes lighting up eagerly as they shouted and ran.

文章大意:本文为一篇记叙文,讲述了作者等人去菲利普岛观察企鹅游行的经历。

5 . Phillip Island is a small island and nature reserve off the coast of south Australia, about 140 km from Melbourne. On the island you can see koalas, kangaroos and the main attraction, the penguin (企 鹅 ) parade on Summerland Beach.

As dusk was coming nearer, we made our way down to the beach,as did everyone else. As it got darker, people talked less, keeping an eye out on the beach to see the arrival of that first penguin.

Suddenly there was movement at the edge of the surf and all heads turned as one. There, standing by the edge of the water was the smallest penguin we had ever seen. He looked left, then right ,as if he was considering crossing a busy road and then he ran quickly across to the sand dunes (沙丘) and the penguin burrows (地洞).

He must have been the scout (侦查员),because after him, there came groups of penguins, some consisted of two or three penguins, some had about ten or fifteen, but they all made that same mad dash across the sand into the burrows. Finally no more penguins emerged from the sea.

You could see the penguins here every evening and morning, but they weren’t in cages or in small pools. The sea was their playground and it is a sight we would definitely recommend to anyone.

You weren’t allowed to take flash photographs as it scared them. After the penguins had gone to their burrows, you could walk along boardwalks and see them there. That’s got to be worth a look.

Twins Katie and Sarah Monahan arrived at Pennsylvania’s Gettysburg College. They were determined to strike out on independent paths. Although the 18-year-old sisters had requested rooms in different dormitory, the housing office placed them on the eighth floor of the same building, across the hall from each other.

Katie was a very lovely and kind-hearted girl. She always did her best to prevent others from any problem. Once the dormitory was out of electricity and her roommate. Windy was studying in the classroom only leaving Katie alone in the dormitory at that time Katie had just finished her favourite horrible American TV series. She felt very scared. But she didn’t want to disturb Windy, so she just stayed in the dark dormitory alone till Windy got back to the dormitory. Windy was a nice girl too. She gave Katie a lot of comfort and care. She would like to make Katie relax after stressful study. She often shared her happiness with Katie. They lived a very happy life together.

While Katie got along with her roommate, Sarah was always cold, but Lily never wanted to turn on the heat, even though it was snowing heavily outside. Sarah liked wearing fur in winter and she also enjoyed cutting up frogs in biology class. But Lily is an vegetarian (素食主义者) and believed all living things are holy (神圣的), even ants and mosquitoes. She and her roommate silently warred over matters ranging from when the lights should be turned off to how the furniture should be arranged. Finally, they gave up communicating.

One day, there was a dormitory contest, which needed roommates to join hands to decorate their dormitory. Sarah wanted to win in the contest but she thought it was impossible for her to finish it because she didn’t talk with Lily.

Depressed and hopeless, Sarah ran across the hall to seek help from Katie.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文,文章主要介绍了美国年轻的网球运动员Emma Raducanu的职业生涯。

9 . At only 18 years old, Emma Raducanu completed a feat that very few could have expected. Representing (代表) the United Kingdom, she won the U.S. Open title. She beat 19-year-old Canadian Leylah Fernandez for the win with a final score of 6-4, 6-3 in the final.

Raducanu’s performance at the U.S. Open had already made history even before her win: she competed as a qualifier (资格赛球员), and was the first qualifier in either men’s or women’s tennis to even make it to the finals of a Grand Slam tournament (锦标大赛).

Raducanu was born in Toronto, Canada but moved to London when she was 2 years old. She’s been playing tennis since she was 5. Her father is Romanian and her mother is Chinese; they both work in finance. “They both come from very hard-working countries. I followed their example to work hard too,” Raducanu said.

During the 2018 Wimbledon junior competition, Raducanu made it to the girls’ quarterfinals. She began her professional career (职业生涯) in 2018 and competed in her first Grand Slam event in June 2021 with Wimbledon. She finally had to pull out during the fourth round because of breathing (呼吸) problems, but even so, by reaching the third round, she became the youngest British woman to make it that far since 2002. Before that, she’d taken more than a year off because of COVID-19 and to finish high school.

Raducanu’s becoming a star has been nothing short of amazing: She’s the youngest player to win a Grand Slam singles tournament since 2004, unseating Maria Sharapova, who won Wimbledon in 2004 at only 17 years old. She’s also the first woman player to take home a title in her second appearance at a Grand Slam.

With her U.S. Open win, she’s become a rising star of the tennis world. And she’s also achieved a lifelong dream, she said.

“It’s a dream,” she said. “I’ve always dreamed of winning a Grand Slam. You just say these things. You say, ‘I want to win a Grand Slam.’ I actually put in a lot of work, and winning a Grand Slam, I can’t believe it.”

1. What does the underlined word “feat” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Training.B.Research.C.Achievement.D.Education.
2. What did Raducanu think of her parents?
A.They’re quite different.B.They’re her role models.
C.They live a very hard life.D.They force her to work hard.
3. What happened to Raducanu at 2021 Wimbledon?
A.She broke the rules.
B.She had some health problems.
C.She failed to enter the third round.
D.She received unfair treatment at the finals.
4. What did Raducanu say about winning a Grand Slam?
A.It was a very difficult task.
B.It depended on some luck.
C.It was her lifelong dream.
D.It happened as she expected.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文,记述了作者去美国大峡谷野营的经历。

10 . Grand Canyon National Park is consistently rated as one of the best national parks in the US and is one of those places that are crowded throughout the year. Camping in the Grand Canyon gives you a totally different feel. You’ll get more room, more silence and more time to enjoy the wide-open spaces. Why should you camp on the edge of the Grand Canyon? The night sky is beyond compare, not to mention the sunrise and sunset.

There is a beautiful unmarked trail (小路) nearby. It meanders (蜿蜒) through the trees and along the south edge of the canyon, with the most beautiful views of the Colorado River below. I made my way to the canyon edge for both sunrise and sunset every day. Both shows were spectacular, but sunsets were pretty crowded everywhere we went. Sunrise was a different story — perfectly quiet, except for the singing birds. I set my alarm for 4:20 am, left the kids sleeping in their tent, and made my way through the pack each morning. I’m sure there are lots of beautiful places to watch the sun come up on the edge, but my favourite was Moran Point, which provided a great view of both east and west. We were lucky enough to witness the full moon setting one morning while the sun bathed the canyon in its warm light.

The Grand Canyon is a magical but busy place. If you like your wilderness experience to be wild, consider visiting in the off-season, between October and April. The South Kaibab Trail offers wonderful views and relative silence for not much effort, but be sure to pack sunscreen, snacks and lots of water. Even meandering along the South Edge Trail from Grand Canyon Village will allow you to escape the groups of visitors.

1. Why do people camp on the edge of the Grand Canyon?
A.To save money.B.To avoid the crowd.
C.To enjoy the fresh air.D.To enjoy the beautiful night scene.
2. Why did the author like Moran Point?
A.It was where he enjoyed the sunsets.
B.He could listen to birds singing there.
C.It was a good place to see the sunrise.
D.He could see the full moon setting there.
3. When can people go to the Grand Canyon to experience more wildness?
A.In September.B.In March.C.In June.D.In July.
4. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To share his experience of visiting the Grand Canyon.
B.To describe the beautiful scenes of the Grand Canyon.
C.To tell us where to camp in the Grand Canyon.
D.To advise us to visit the Grand Canyon.
