3 . The well-known Spanish painter Pablo Picasso once said, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he/ she grows up.”
This is both encouraging and discouraging. The fact that we were all born to be artists is surely exciting. But the reality has proven that remaining to be an artist is a task that many of us have failed. Fortunately, some people have seen the problem and want to solve it. Western educators have suggested that we introduce the concept of “STEAM” instead of “STEM”—traditional “core majors including science, technology, engineering and math—since the “A”, which stands for “art”, is just important as well. And so did the China’s Ministry of Education. It required colleges and universities to provide more art-related courses for students. They need to earn a certain number of art credits (学分) in order to graduate.
These efforts came after many scientific studies had found that art education helps students develop self-confidence and teamwork skills, as well as habits of mind such as problem solving and critical thinking.
It’s true that none of these skills is directly connected with jobs. But as former US ballet dancer Damian Woetzel told The Atlantic, the purpose of art is “to give kids the tools to become adults who are creative, adaptable and expressive— capable of having their eyes and ears and senses alive. And we can now see how we lost track of our born “artist self” on our way to growing up: we failed to keep our capabilities to see, hear and feel, and became blind, deaf and insensitive adults.
Hopefully, art education can help turn things around.

5 . I was walking around in a Big Bazar store doing some shopping, when I saw a cashier(收银员) talking to a boy of 5 or 6 years old. The cashier said, “I’m sorry, but you don’t have enough money to buy this doll.” Then the little boy turned to me and asked, “Uncle, are you sure I don’t have enough money?”
I counted his cash and replied, “You know that you don’t have enough money to buy the doll, my dear.” The little boy was still holding the doll in his hand. I asked him whom he wished to give this doll to. “It’s the doll that my sister loved most and wanted so much. I wanted to gift her for her birthday. I have to give the doll to my mommy so that she can give it to my sister when she goes there.” His eyes were so sad while he was saying this.
“My sister has gone to be with God. Daddy said that Mommy is going to see God very soon too, so I think that she may take the doll with her to give it to my sister.” My heart nearly stopped. The little boy looked up at me and said, “I told daddy to tell mommy not to go yet. I need her to wait until I come back from the mall.” Then he showed me a very nice photo of him, where he was laughing. He then told me, “I want mommy to take my picture with her so my sister won’t forget me. I love mommy and I wish she didn’t have to leave me, but daddy said that she has to go to be with my little sister.
Then he looked again at the doll with sad eyes, very quietly. I quickly reached for my wallet and said to the boy, “I suppose we check again, just in case you do have enough money for the doll.” He said, “OK, I hope I do have enough.” I added some of my money to his without him seeing and we started to count it. There was enough for the doll and even some spare money.
The little boy said, “Thank you, God, for giving me enough money!” Then he looked at me and added, “I asked last night before I went to sleep for God to make sure I had enough money to buy this doll, so that mommy could give it to my sister. He heard me! I also wanted to have enough money to buy a white rose for my mommy, but I didn’t dare to ask God for too much. But he gave me enough to buy the doll and a white rose. My mommy loves white roses.”

7 . Job interviews, exams, medical tests—we’ve all waited and worried over the results. Some lucky people can wait without much worrying. Many of us, however, get anxious awaiting the outcome.
Kate Sweeny, a professor of psychology at University of California Riverside, studies these differences in waiting behavior. In her latest study, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, she and a colleague studied 50 law school graduates waiting for the results of the California Bar Exam (律师资格考试). They took detailed surveys about the participants' self-esteem, how well they managed uncertainty, and whether they were more optimistic or pessimistic (悲观的). They also looked at how participants managed expectations and handled stress.
Not surprisingly, they found that an optimistic outlook and being more comfortable with uncertainty made waiting less stressful. It didn't matter whether the participants reported high self-esteem or not. What mattered most was whether they expected the best.
“I was surprised,” says Sweeny.
Also interesting was that people changed as they got closer to learning the results. At first,it was harder for all of the participants to distract themselves, and all of them—even optimists—became more pessimistic as time went on.
Expecting bad news and preparing for failure may not relieve anxiety while waiting, but later on, it gives people a sense of control over their futures.
Similarly, it’s important that people don’t attach to much of themselves to the result. “If you convince yourself the bar exam is... just a silly exam you have to take and doesn’t reflect on your or your abilities, that... might help you .. if the news is bad,” she says.
Worriers can take comfort, however. Sweeny found that participants who suffered more stress were better at receiving even bad news. Indeed, those who had more anxiety while waiting for their bar exam results were more likely to turn around and start studying again if they failed.
Sweeny is recently studying the effects of mindfulness meditation (正念冥想) for those who are absorbed in results, as it helps people control their thoughts and emotions. The technique is perfect for this situation, she says. Waiting will never be easy, but having something under your control could make it more acceptable.
1. What did Sweeny find about her participants?A.Law school students found it more difficult to accept failure. |

9 . A new study conducted by University College London (UCL) in partnership with composer Eric Whitacre and Music Productions explores how singing in a virtual choir delivers significant psychological (心理) benefits.
The research was led by Dr Daisy Fancourt, who designed an online questionnaire(问卷) to gather data from participants in Whitacre's Virtual Choir 5.0. The results were compared with those from diverse live choirs and a data set was produced with responses from 2,316 singers.
Both groups reported experiencing improved self-esteem and greater individual confidence. The results also suggested that the virtual choir experience can help fight feelings of loneliness and promote a sense of connection to others. In addition to this, virtual singers reported that singing helped them to take time away from stresses and gave them the space to reconsider problems in their lives, although this result was greater for singers in a live choir.
“We have so much research showing that singing in live choirs is generally good for our health and well-being.” comments Fancourt. “But what we didn't know before is whether singing in virtual choirs also has health and well-being benefits. This new research is exciting as it suggests that for people who are unable to sing in live choirs, either due to living in a community without a choir or due to illness, singing in virtual choirs can provide similar emotional and social benefits.”
1. What was the study about?A.Why singing in a choir is significant. |
B.In what ways virtual choirs benefit people. |
C.How music is produced in a virtual choir. |
D.Whether singing changes people's psychology. |

C.It promotes health and well-being. |
D.It helps ease stress better than live choirs. |
A.Encouraging. |
B.Puzzling. |
C.Disappointing. |

Harry was afraid of the wind, I blew of his hat. I whistled under his door. It made the iron fence murmur scary music.
“How can anyone be afraid of the wind?” asked Harry's friend Antony many times. Harry shrugged. Antony always comforted him and encouraged him. Sometimes that made Harry feel better. But not for long.
On windy days Harry sod at his window and watched Antony riding his bike, whose hair flew in the wind. He watched his friend playing cheerfully in the wind, wishing he weren't afraid.
One day Antony came to Harry's house to play. “Look at my glider(滑翔机),” said Antony. “It does tricks and loop-de-loops when I fly it outside in the wind.” “Nice,” said Harry.
When clouds rolled in, the tree in front of Harry's house swung. A garbage can top clattered(发出撞击声) down the street. Antony couldn't wait to fly the glider outside and invited Harry to play together, but he refused.
Harry staved inside and played with his construction set. He pictured launching the glider with Antony. But when he imagined the wind blowing against his face and blowing off his hat, he shivered.
Harry drew pictures of Antony's glider lifting with the wind. Gradually, hearing the happy laughter and shouts of more children outside, he felt sad to be in his room while everyone else was there.
Harry began to make a kite. He took two sticks from his craft bin and crossed them. He tied them together and made a diamond shape with four more sticks. He glued the colored paper onto the sticks and attached a ball of string to make a rudder(方向舵). He held the kite up high, his twinkling eyes staring at it.
