Kiton and his parents lived near the forest. They didn’t have much money, but they loved each other very much. Every day Kiton’s parents worked hard to earn more money for the family. Kiton did very well in his studies, which made his parents happy. They were sure that one day their son would become a big man. They always told Kiton that hard work was the best way to succeed.
Kiton cared about his parents and always helped them with the housework after he finished his homework. Whenever he saw his parents were tired, he felt very sad. How he wished his family could become rich quickly. Many times, Kiton dreamed of earning a lot of money in his sleep.
One day Kiton heard that there was huge treasure in a cave across the forest. Kiton thought if he found the treasure, his family would become rich. He told his parents about it. But they said he should not believe that and should work hard in his studies instead. But Kiton made up his mind to find the treasure. So he secretly made his plan.
The next day after school, Kiton started off without telling his parents. He reached far into the forest and the night was getting dark. In the dark, he felt as if an animal were following him. So he tried all his best to run. Because he couldn’t see the way clearly, he lost his footing and fell into a pit (坑). He tried but couldn’t get out. He listened, but heard nothing from any animals. He didn’t know how much time had passed. He heard someone calling his name from far away.

I’d just returned from a beautiful fall early-morning walk with my dog. At the front door, I dug around in my pockets for the keys. When I discovered I didn’t have them, I decided to return to the paths we’d taken. I would surely spot them in plain sight. My little dog ran in circles of excitement that we would do a repeat of our just-finished outing. I spent an hour looking, brushing aside tall grasses, but the keys remained lost. I was beginning to get upset as I thought of the results of losing them, so I continued to look for them but failed.
Back home again, I pulled the backup key from its hiding place, let myself in the house, and fell on the chair in tiredness. The house key wasn’t that important as I had an extra. The mail key was a big deal because getting a new one takes a lot of time. I had a spare car key, but there was often something wrong with it, and the key would be expensive to replace. But the iron heart made by my grandson was precious beyond measure. For some reason, thinking of it being gone forever made tears come to my eyes.
That night, it turned colder and we had a snow. I enjoyed a comfort-food dinner, played soft music, and settled into a peaceful evening until I heard the noise of my car alarm from the garage (车库). I rushed to the car, put the extra key into the door and finally opened it, and then I hurriedly tried my best to stop the alarm. I felt red-faced as I imagined my next-door neighbors being disturbed and annoyed.
I went back in the house but the alarm started again. I turned it off, went back inside, and the alarm sounded again. I repeated the process. Back in the house, I waited, but the next sound was the front doorbell. Thinking it was a neighbor ready to shout at me, I opened the door slowly and turned on the light with apologies ready.

Cindy and Tracy were former alumnae (校友)and best friends. Cindy lived alone in Los Angeles far away from her home in Paris, France. Though she was far away from home, Cindy was happy to have friends like Tracy and she also enjoyed the company of her pet dog, Ted, which she had adopted (收养)from the animal shelter. The two friends visited each other regularly. I racy was not much of a pet lover, but as she was well aware of pet owners' "Love me, love my deg” attitude, she was friendly to Ted and played with him on her visits.
Tracy never thought of keeping a pet in her own house until one day. Cindy invited her io dinner, during which Cindy expressed her intention to commit (托付)Ted to her care for a year. She told Tracy as her father's health was failing, she would have to go back to Paris to take care of family business before her brother could graduate from college. Cindy was unwilling to send Ted back to the animal shelter or leave it to the hands of a complete stranger.
Knowing that Ted meant a lot to Cindy, Tracy gladly promised to help out. Soon, the day came when Cindy would leave for Paris. She took Ted to Tracy's home, taking Ted's food. bowl, bathing basin and toys etc. with her. She asked 1'racy to remember Ted's food preference and habits. She hugged Ted tightly in her arms for a while and asked Tracy to take Ted to the garden and play Ted's favorite ball game. Cindy left Tracy's house quietly, managing to avoid being seen by Ted. When she was out, tears filled her eyes.
After Cindy had left, Tracy tried her very best to take good care of Ted. She kept messaging Cindy asking for puppy-care advice. At first Ted was obviously not comfortable in Tracy's house but as time went by , he began to accept her and Tracy got used to his existence.

I, together with my friend James, go to the cinema the other day. The film Never Say No left a deeply impression on me, from which I have learned a lot. No matter what great difficulties we meet with in our life, we shouldn’t lose heart. Instead, you should face up to the problems and manage to overcome them. At the present, I have some difficulties in adapting to my new study life. I’m determined to try harder and more optimistic. And I’m convincing that I can make it with the guidance of my teachers and friends. The film is well worth see once again. Which I suggest doing, my dear friends, is that you should watch it.

8 . After opening the world’s first commercial Direct Air Capture plant(直接空气捕集工厂)designed to pull CO2 out of the air, Swiss company Climeworks is now trying to create the world’s first “negative emission(负排放)” power plant.
An international team of scientists has been working on a way to turn captured CO2 into minerals. The project is called CarFix. Experts capture the gas, put it into water and send it to more than 700 meters underground. There the CO2 on contact with a special kind of rock forms into a mineral.
“Our results show that between 95 and 98 percent of the CO2, sent underground was mineralized over the period of less than two years, which is amazingly fast,” says lead author of the CarFix project, Dr. Juerg Matter. Before this discovery it was thought that this mineralization could take hundreds to thousands of years.
The DAC technology can collect CO2 from the atmosphere and then store it underground or sell it to business needing the gas. For example, customers can use it in drinks. And the first plant in Zurich is supplying the captured CO2 to a nearby greenhouse to “feed” vegetables. By using the company’s CO2 the customers can reduce their carbon mission as well as lower their dependence on energy.
A 2015 study suggested that before the CarFix project, experts could collect CO2, but they didn’t have a large-scale(大规模的)method to safely treat it.
Combining Climeworks’ DAC technology with the CarFix mineralization process they will be able to create a system. This system doesn’t put additional carbon back into the atmosphere. Actually it is carbon negative.
“The economic cost of applying this kind of carbon capture technology on a large-scale is not particularly practical now, but for the first time we are seeing a realistic and effective system,” says Christoph Gebald CEO of Climeworks.

9 . According to most people, after a long period of studying or working, we need to have a rest to refresh ourselves. However, that may not be the case. According to a recent report, you don’t need the break as much as you may think that makes you feel less tired.
Scientists have long assumed that willpower is a limited resource, which is why you feel the need to have a rest, have a snack and then get back to task when you are feeling better. They argue that the only way it restores willpower is by rest, food or entertainment.
But psychologists have challenged this theory, saying weak willpower is all in your head. They have found that people’s belief in willpower determines how long and how well they’ll be able to work on tough mental exercise. “If you think of willpower are something that is not really used up, you can go on and on.” said Professor Veronika Job.
The researchers designed four experiments to test students’ belief in willpower. After a tiring task, those who believed, or were led to believe that willpower is a limited resource, performed worse on standard concentration tests than those who thought of willpower as something they had more control over. They also found that leading up to the final exam week, students who believed the limited resource theory ate junk food 24 percent more often than those who believed they had more control in resisting the temptation.
Mr. Job said, “The theory that willpower is a limited resource is interesting. Belief in willpower as a non-limited resource makes people stronger in their ability to work through challenges.”
The findings can help people who are battling against temptation. Willpower isn’t driven by a biologically-based process as much as we used to think. The belief in it is what influences your behaviors.
