Andrew Kirby, is 16 years old, He is now a student of Boiling Springs Senior Middle School. Since the first day he went to school, Andrew Kirby normally ate alone at school and it made his mother, Kay Kirby, heartbreak. She was always worried about his being left alone when eating.
But on Aug. 20, the first day when he went to junior school, as soon as he got in the car after school, he said to his mom, “Mom, I didn’t cat alone! Some student council members asked me and 3 others eating alone to cone sit with them, and said we could eat with them again tomorrow too!” Kay Kirby was so excited that her eyes were wet. After arriving home, she shared a photo of Andrew and gave thanks to the student council at his high school for asking him to join their lunch table.
Kay Kirby is a mom of four, She and her husband Tyler Kirby adopted Andrew when they were fostering him as a baby. Andrew was born with a drug addiction and has a kind of rare disease, which is a genetic condition that causes tumors (肿瘤) to form in the brain, and nerves. He has had major back and neck operations.
Andrew is a shy kid, and he had often sat by himself at lunch since he went to school. He’s more of a loner. In his mother’s eyes, he is a good kid, but he’s just different. It doesn’t make him strange or bad. He’s very loyal and everybody that meets him, loves him.
In previous school years, Kay would text Andrew to ask if he was having lunch with any-one at school. When he said ‘No’, the mother would have to turn her head a lot of time and try not to cry. Andrew would send comforting message: “Mom, it doesn’t matter. I am OK”. However, the mother would still worry about him.

Random Acts of Kindness
I was driving along Clarendon Street in South Melbourne on my way to Castlemaine to visit my parents. As I stopped at a traffic light, I noticed a man lying on a bench seat on the footpath beside the road. It was early evening and his rough appearance and the fact that he was holding a bottle wrapped in newspaper confirmed my immediate suspicions — he was a drunk.
As soon as I saw him, I felt a strong feeling of sympathy for him. But like so many other people, I had other places to be and other things to do. As I watched, I saw two policemen approach and instantly I felt relieved. After all, it was their responsibility to clean up the streets and make sure men like him got a chance to be somewhere safe for the night. As I sat waiting for the traffic lights to turn green, I couldn’t believe what I saw. The two police walked around and when they reached the man, both of whom turned their heads the other way, as if not to see, and walked right past. Suddenly, a firm belief streamed through my mind, “Life is never so busy that there is no time to serve.”
Right then I looked up and the traffic lights turned green — and I had a decision to make. I knew that if I drove off, I would have no peace, so I turned left, drove around the block, parked the car and walked back to the man. As I approached him, I felt completely unconfident to deal with the situation and even a little foolish. What was I going to say? What was I going to do? At the very least I could drive him home — if he had a home. I found him sleeping soundly and at first, he didn’t respond to me at all, so I reached out and gently shook him awake.

Teen Becomes A Local Hero
When Sydney Raley headed into her weekend shift on Saturday, December 18, she likely expected to do more of the same: Stand at the drive-through window, take orders over the headset, and hand each customer their meal with a smile.
In fact. that’s exactly how it started. Sydney Raley has been working at MC Donald’s for about seven months and so far, it’s been her typical after-school job. The day had been mostly normal -making coffee, making drinks, and going into the lunch rush.
But a few hours into her shift. things took a dramatic turn. After handing a customer some of their food, Sydney let them know that more would be coming as soon as it was ready. But just seconds later, she noticed a terrible look of panic spread across the woman’s face. Then came the coughing. She was coughing like crazy and was speechless. Her daughter was in the passenger seat and looked extremely confused and frightened.
Sydney immediately knew she was choking. The first aid training Sydney received more than four years ago hit her. Most 15-year-olds might panic at the sight of this. But not Sydney. Instead, the teen remained calm and quickly shouted to both her manager and the woman’s daughter to dial 911. Then, she dove through the drive-through window and came to the rescue.
The teen pushed the driver’s side door forcefully open and got the choking woman to her feet. Then she dug down deep into her memory bank to recall everything she learned from her Red Cross babysitter class-which she’d taken four years earlier. All that training of how to use the Heimlich maneuver(哈姆立克急教法)immediately kicked in. Still, she had never actually had to use the life-saving technique before, and after a few tries, it wasn’t quite working. Luckily, another customer was just a few feet away in the parking lot.

10 . We live in a time when technology has enabled everyone to be a journalist. Yet not everyone has the proper training. Whether out of ignorance or out of a sense of honor, some of the journalism online has done a better job of changing public opinion than showing the whole truth.
Two recent stories are perfect reminders of the difference between the urge to change minds and basic journalism ethics(道德标准).
“A college kid took some birds from a nearby tree and was sentenced to 10 years in prison,” went a recent online headline from the Chinese Internet. The accompanying vote showed that 85 percent of respondents sided with the student. Some joked that most boys would be guilty of such a crime because everyone had stolen birds when they were children.
Left out of the original report was the fact that the birds in question were falcons, which are on the nation’s list of protected, endangered species. Birdwatchers also said that it was unlikely Yan Xiaotian, the 21-year-old defendant, had found the 12 birds in one tree. For this particular species, he had to search a much larger area.
For me, the most important questions are: Did he know it was illegal before he took the birds and did he know that before he sold them?
Follow-up reporting has found that the evidence showed that Yan knew what he was doing. The only point of uncertainty is the very first time he took the first birds when he could be unaware of their status and value. As a matter of fact, the prosecutor(公诉人) started out asking for a light punishment, but took a U-turn when data from Yan’s cellphone clearly showed that he had stolen them.
The punishment, while sounding harsh, followed the law almost to the letter. The court has since said it would review the case, a sign of giving in to public pressure.
Let’s look at the second story, which can be read as either “Elderly man had to walk in his shorts for hours in Sanya after his bike was taken by the city’s quasi-police”(城管) or “Retired official illegally parked his bike for a swim and made the city apologize and fire a low-paid city management staff member”.
Both played up(渲染) different parts of the same story. For me, Bi Guochang’s age and former official title are not relevant to the case. The key is whether he indeed parked his bike illegally and whether proper procedures were being followed by taking it away and making him get it back. Yet the reports focused on the image of an old man walking only in his shorts. He could have phoned his family for backup or taken a taxi home first before complaining, as most would do in that situation.
Such stories read like badly-written morality tales, with everything in black and white and a simple yes-or-no message. Real life is much more complicated. Reporters have to be neutral and avoid taking sides too early.
