3 . If Confucius(孔子)were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He'd need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.

While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It's nothing personal. Most Americans don't even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.

But this doesn't mean that Americans don't care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.

In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually include Chinese art, history and

philosophy(哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks(缺陷)of Western philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.

So the old thinker's ideas are still alive and well.

Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.

As for the old thinker, he will not soon be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。本文介绍了民间艺术在传承历史中发挥了重要作用,然而中国民间艺术正在消失,这让作者很担忧,也希望全社会的支持和帮助来保护中国民间艺术。

6 . In over 5,000 years of development, folk art has become a source of other forms of Chinese culture. However, the diversity (多样性) of cultural forms and the influence of foreign cultures have also brought challenges to Chinese folk art.

Chinese folk art has many types, including painting, calligraphy, embroidery, carving and paper cutting. It is hard to say how many kinds of folk art there are in the country. On the other hand, it is also hard to tell how many of them have disappeared. The situation is becoming more and more serious. Some kinds of folk art came to an end naturally, while others disappeared because there wasn’t enough protection. Isn’t it painful to lose so many kinds of folk art simply because of the absence of protection?

Folk art has played an important role in carrying forward history. For example, the blue printed cloth in Jiangsu Province has been a part of China’s printing technology for so long that, it is of great value to those studying China’s ancient science, technology, culture, folk custom and art.

Chinese folk art is drawing the attention of more and more foreigners with its unique charm and miraculous techniques (独特的魅力和神奇的技巧). Many people are worried about its protection and further development.

Then, who will be the protectors of Chinese folk art? It has to be the government, experts and scholars and even the whole of society. Though China has passed laws to protect its cultural relics, they don’t include the protection of folk art. Experts and scholars should go out among the people and find top artistic works still unknown to the world. Such protection also requires the support of the whole of society. Only when we gather forces from all sides can we protect Chinese folk art.

1. What does the underlined part “The situation” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The influence of foreign cultures on Chinese folk art.
B.The absence of protection of Chinese folk.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

That night, I quarreled with my mother, and then rushed out of the house. While on the road, I remembered that I did not have any money in my pocket. I did not even take my cell phone with me to make a call home.

At the same time, I went through a noodle shop, and I suddenly felt very hungry. I wished for a bowl of noodles, but I had no money!

The seller saw me standing before the counter and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?”

“Oh, yes... but I don’t have money on me...” she replied. “That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man, “Come in.”

A few minutes later the owner brought me a steaming bowl of noodles. I thanked the man and started to gobblle (狼吞虎咽) up the delicious food...then I cried silently.

“What is it?” asked the man kindly.

“Nothing. I am just touched by your kindness!” I said as I wiped my tears. “Even a stranger on the street gives me a bowl of noodles, while my mother, after a quarrel, chased me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so mean and cruel!”

Hearing the words, the seller smiled “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. why were you not grateful and why did you hurt your mom? You should say sorry to your mom.“

I was really surprised after hearing that.

Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful, and my mother has been taking care of me since I was little and I have never felt so, not even a little.

8 . Just as humans are usually left- or right-handed, many animals favor one side of their body for certain tasks. The strength of this preference varies: some individuals are happy to use either side, while others strongly favor one side(known as being strongly "lateralized")·

The University of Exeter study found that grey squirrels which strongly favored a side did less well on a learning task. They had to learn to use a paw(爪子), rather than their mouth, to get nuts.

"It has been suggested that being strongly lateralized makes brains more efficient, with each hemisphere(半球)focusing on different tasks," said Dr Lisa Leaver. "This could help animals survive, which would explain the evolution of laterality(向侧性)across the animal kingdom."

"In fish and birds, there is evidence that being strongly lateralized is linked to better cognitive(认知的) performance (brain function). However, limited data from studies of mammals (哺乳动物)suggest a weak or even negative relationship. Our study measured speed of learning among grey squirrels and, in line with these previous mammal studies, suggests that strong lateralization is linked to poor cognitive performance," said Dr Leaver.

In the study, wild grey squirrels on the University of Exeter's Streatham Campus were presented with transparent tube containing peanuts. Squirrels usually collect food with their mouth, but the tube was too narrow to allow this, so they had to learn to use a paw. By measuring both how quickly squirrels learned and how strongly they favored a particular paw, the researchers could assess both learning and laterality.

More than 30 squirrels were observed, with 12 providing enough data for inclusion in the study.

The relationship between laterality and human cognitive performance is still unclear, though some research has suggested that less lateralized people may be more creative. "More research on mammals is needed to understand the complex relationship between laterality and cognitive performance," Dr Leaver said.

1. What did the University of Exeter study focus on?
A.The habits of grey squirrels.B.The cause of strong lateralization.
C.The evolution process of laterality.D.The effects of lateralization on learning.
2. What can we know from the fourth paragraph?
A.Fish and birds have similar brain structures.
B.Most fish and birds have strong lateralization.
C.Strongly lateralized birds are better at learning.
D.Strongly lateralized grey squirrels have a higher IQ.
3. How did the strongly lateralized squirrels act in the study?
A.They were slower to get peanuts.B.They got more peanuts than others.
C.They got through the tube quickly.D.They used their paws more skillfully.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Left-handed animals prove more intelligent.
B.Grey squirrels change their habits for food.
C.Laterality is connected with better brains.
D.Strongly "handed" squirrels are less good at learning.
