3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My little sister, Meg, said that she wasn’t afraid of the dark anymore and she’d be OK staying with Aunt Lily in the country. “As long as you’re there, Mike,” she had said. Still, Mum was worried. Meg had never slept away from home, away from the city. So I told Mum I could handle everything.

Even though we were only staying overnight, Meg had brought six books-all about fairies (仙女). After we unpacked, Aunt Lily invited us to pick some flowers. As we followed her through the forest, Meg held my hand tightly. But once we reached the sunlit grassland, she let go. “Butterflies!” whispered Meg. She screamed with delight when one flew near her.

Maybe I had nothing to worry about, I thought. I still remembered when I was here last summer, I found some amazing insects, like fireflies (萤火虫) and walking sticks which I’d never seen in the city.

“Fairies are magical. See these beautiful flowers they grow!” she kept telling absolutely everything she knew about fairies. I was glad that if she kept it up until bedtime, then maybe she’d fall right to sleep.

Meg did keep chatting, right through supper. Then the sun began to set. “Does it get really dark out here at night?” she asked. Her eyes were fixed on the window.

“Sure, but we’ve got plenty of lights inside,” said Aunt Lily. She leaned over and gave Meg a warm smile. But I could tell she was still worried. “I could read to you.”

I hadn’t even finished a page when her bottom lip started shaking slightly. “Mike,” she said, her eyes starting to fill. “I want to go home.” I quickly searched through her book for something to keep her from crying.

The book fell open to a page that was dog-eared from use, a page that was obviously one of Meg’s favorites. The text read: “Among the trees deep in the forest, the lights of fairies gleam (闪烁).” Aha! How could I forget those “tiny fairies” out there?

Traveling on an airplane can be a very tiring task even in the best of circumstances.

A teenage boy with Down syndrome (唐氏综合征) who was traveling with his family had become upset and would not return to his seat, in spite of the cabin crew’s warnings over the loudspeaker that it was almost time to land. In terms of such     1     situation, the pilot was forced to circle above the airport     2    (temporary), delaying (延迟) the landing and angering people on the already tense flight.

Though the boy’s elderly parents and adult brothers and sisters tried to persuade him to get off the floor and back into his seat, he was     3    (oppose) to their advice resolutely. They seemed to be     4     despair. Subsequently, Murphy, 42 — who had been a teacher for about 20 years-glanced at the boy, stood up and quickly headed to the back of the plane.

She found the boy in the passage between rows of seats, lying on his belly (腹部). So she also lay down on her stomach to face him. She began chatting calmly with him,     5    (ask) his name, his favorite book, and his favorite characters. He told her he felt sick and she tried to comfort him. Minutes later, he allowed her to hold his hand — and then together they got properly back into the airplane seats. Murphy asked for sick bags. and held them as the boy threw up (呕吐) several times. As she helped him clean up, she repeatedly told him everything would be okay and that they’d get through it together.

Thanks to his timely assistance, the plane was finally able to land safely on the ground.     6     one might expect, no one was impatient to step off the flight with parcels. Instead, calmed passengers — obviously following Murphy’s amazing example — allowed the boy and his family     7    (depart) first, smiling at them as they passed. His parents said they couldn’t thank Murphy enough for what     8    (do) by her already, and a doctor sitting nearby also let her know he had even taken notes on her expert way of having the situation handled. The doctor said, “You     9     have dealt with such a kind of case before, haven’t you? Your good deeds have made an impression on us. I want to express my deep     10    (appreciate) for you.”

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Different sports filled my days in my youth. I dreamed or a big win some day, with a big trophy (奖杯). I was skillful and fast, or so I thought. However, I soon learned my skills seemed quite weak because the bigger, stronger boys seemed to occupy every corner of the playground. Once I was in the 100-yard hurdles, the only recognition I received for my performance was two bloody knees.

In college, I took a swim competition, dreaming of the glory! It turned out I achieved nothing. As an older adult, I still maintained an active lifestyle. In 2010 I signed up for a stair-climbing challenge to raise money for fighting against lung cancer. My father had died of the same disease, so this was a meaningful cause for me. Then, in 2019,the organization offered an even more challenging climb option: the vertical (垂直的) mile. So I would have three hours to climb up and down twenty-eight floors fifteen times, plus three more.

I trained hard. When the challenge started. I felt confident. But soon my legs started feeling heavy. What was worse, I began experiencing leg cramps (抽筋). My progress slowed dramatically and I quickly fell behind. When came down after finishing lap 14, it was past the time limit, so my big win had escaped once again.

Soon after the climb, I struggled to experience the sense of self-satisfaction. And I had, after all, set a goal for myself to prove what I was made of, what I had inside me. And what I had inside me was, “Nice try, but you didn’t make it.” So, a year later, at age 62 and after numerous workouts, I was back. Like last year, I was well ahead after an hour and I again started feeling some discomfort in my legs. I heard myself cry out loud, “Oh, no not again!” I finally stopped and sat down on the stairs, feeling quite depressed and wondering if my dream was over. A few climbers stopped to offer help. I was touched, but embarrassed to accept. Except for one climber. An angel climber, really.

Jessica, who I happened to know, was a salesman’s friend when I bought new running shoes at his store. And without that connection, she might have climbed past me as I sat on those steps, my legs shaking. But all those things did happen, and Jessica stopped to help.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要介绍了作者安置一只老龄狗的故事。

8 . Last weekend, my husband and I drove a dog to her new home. Typically, when we have a new dog in the backseat, it’s a young dog. But this passenger was a much different story. Magdalen is a 13-year old dog. Her owner gave her up temporarily when he was sick, but when he fully recovered several months later, he said he didn’t want her back. He had her since she was young but now had no place for her.

The family who had given her a temporary home had children and other dogs and was unable to give her a forever home. When Speak St, Louis, the rescue team I work with, was contacted about the dog, they offered to take her in. She went to a vet (兽医) for a basic health check. But the vet didn’t have great news. Her mouth was swollen (肿胀的) with all sorts of problems. Two teeth fell out during cleaning and eleven more had to be pulled out.

Luckily, a good friend of mine, a dog trainer with a soft heart for seniors, had agreed to adopt Magdalen. On the trip to the trainer’s home, the sweet senior looked so relaxed in our backseat. I felt a great sense of relief and pleasure.

Her owner needed some temporary help when he was sick. But I can’t imagine why he wouldn’t have wanted her back. I think of my own dog and dogs we lost to old age in the past. We’re family and we stay that way forever. She’d be able to live a good life. I hoped, in her new home!

A.The former owners of the dog.
B.Where the dog was treated.
C.What the dog needed most.
D.The problems the dog met.
2. What is the author’s job?
A.Training old dogs.
B.Treating sick dogs.
C.Looking for homes for dogs.
D.Looking for lost dogs’ owners.

A.Relieved and happy.B.Nervous and grateful.
C.Surprised and curious.D.Hopeful and proud.
4. What does the author think of Magdalen’s owner giving her up?
A.She didn’t understand his behaviour.
B.She believed it was painful for him.
C.She was certain he would regret.
D.She thought he made a wise decision.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要描述了作者和女儿前往南极洲的经历。

9 . Getting to Antarctica is not easy. The few who are lucky enough to visit this most mysterious continent do so by ship. To reach Antarctica, ships must pass through an extremely violent area of ocean called the Drake Passage, considered to be the roughest stretch of sea on the planet.

Walls of water thirty, sometimes forty feet high continually crashed against our ship for two solid days. We would hold on to a rope inside the ship while being violently tipped (倾斜) to one extreme side, then to the other, and then back again. My daughter Claire and I were as mentally prepared as we could be.

About two and a half days after entering the Drake Passage, the waters calmed. Soon, we noticed small black spots on nearby pieces of floating ice. Emperor penguins (企鹅)! Then, we began the two-mile hike over the ice to the penguin colony. Within several hundred yards, small groups of emperors, perhaps ten or so at a time, greeted us, sliding on their bellies and making their wonderful noises, sort of a long, high-pitched sound.

One day two adult emperors with their three chicks following them approached Claire, who was resting on the ice. They left the chicks with her, as if she were the babysitter. Twenty minutes later they returned to collect the chicks. And I will never forget the penguin that, when I jokingly asked which way back to the helicopters, pointed a wing in the correct direction. Every night aboard our safe and warm ship, we thought about what it takes to survive in Antarctica, an incredibly harsh (恶劣的) place.

But each day on the ice, we also thought about the Drake Passage, the impact of the large body of water we had to endure to get where we were. Over the course of our visit, we came to respect the power of that sea. We still talk about the penguins, as I’m sure we always will. But we talk about the Drake Passage, too. Both experiences were unforgettable, an one would not have been possible without the other.

1. Why is the Drake Passage mentioned in the first paragraph?
A.The water in the area is usually calm.
B.People can see very attractive scenery there.
C.It is quite a dangerous section of the journey.
D.A lot of sea animals often appear in the area.
2. What is the theme of the third paragraph?
A.The visitors appreciated the penguins.
B.The living habits of emperor penguins.
C.How penguins made their wonderful noises.
D.The appearance and shape of emperor penguins.
3. What can we infer from the fourth paragraph?
A.Penguins try to avoid human beings.
B.Penguins are not afraid of human beings.
C.Claire played with the two adult penguins for a long time.
D.Claire led the young penguins to where the adult penguins stayed.
4. What does the underlined word “endure” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Promote.B.Break.C.Arrange.D.Experience.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了美国年轻人购买神秘盒子的人数激增,这是一个旅行方案,有几个目的地可供选择。列举了一些人通过神秘盒子旅行的经历。

10 . Making travel a surprise

Most people plan their vacations well in advance, including where they are going.     1    .

Earlier this year, mystery box purchases surged (激增) among young American people. Usually, travelers buy a mystery box at a low price—usually 100 or 200 dollars—and then receive several destination options to choose from.     2    .

A citizen named Carrie is eager to go on a mystery box trip, stating that travelling alone usually costs too much and that too many people don’t know where to go. ”However, the mystery box directly offers me a few destinations, which is wonderful and cheap,“ Carrie said.

Gary, 16, has turned his eagerness to go on a mystery box trip into a reality.     3    . With its reputation of super Internet-famous places, Gary had a change of his opinion after seeing Austin himself. “My biggest discovery is that Austin is a city full of contrasts,” Gary said. “You can see skyscrapers and old houses in old alleys (巷子) in the same view.”

4    . For example, Eureka, despite its scenic views, previously received few visitors due to a lack of promotion. But after it was included as a mystery box travel destination, Eureka has since got lots of attention.

5     because they can meet with many problems after purchasing one, such as poor travel times and sudden flight cancellations (取消). Robert from Department of Tourism Management of University of Washington suggested that visitors should choose reliable platforms and sign contracts to guarantee their trip rights.

A.It is the state capital of Texas
B.Tourism is a major source of income for the area
C.After the destination is decided, their trip begins
D.But some like the thrill of not knowing where they will end up
E.Months ago, he traveled with a group of friends to Austin in Texas
F.Travel mystery boxes bring excitement to many less popular destinations
G.But even so, a large number of people feel disappointed with travel mystery boxes
