Wednesday morning came. Anne got up at sunrise because she was too excited to sleep. She planned to make a cake for Mrs Allan, the best teacher she had ever met, who was invited over for a tea party. When she finally shut the oven door, she took a long breath.
“I'm sure I haven't forgotten anything this time, Marilla . But do you think it will rise? What if that cake doesn't rise?”
“We'll have plenty without it,”was Marilla’s uninterested way of looking at the subject.
The cake did rise, however, and came out of the oven looking perfect. Anne was red-faced with delight and, in imagination, saw Mrs Allan eating it and possibly asking for another piece!
Mrs Allan arrived and they all enjoyed a lovely tea. Everything went well until Anne's cake was passed. Mrs Allan, having already been helped to a lot of desserts, declined it. But Marilla, seeing the disappointment on Anne's face, said smilingly:“Oh, you must take a piece, Mrs Allan. Anne made it specially for you, expecting that you would love it.”
“In that case I must try it,”laughed Mrs Allan. She took a mouthful and a strange expression crossed her face; not a word did she say, however, but continued eating. Marilla saw this and hastened (急忙) to taste the cake. “Anne Shirley!” she shouted, “what on earth did you put into that cake? What flavoring did you use?” “Vanilla (香草精),only vanilla.”said Anne.
“Go and bring me the bottle of vanilla you used.”
Anne returned with a small bottle and Marilla took it and smelled it.
“Mercy on us, Anne, you've flavored that cake with ANODYNE LINIMENT (镇痛剂). Why couldn't you have smelled it?”
Ashamed of her mistake, Anne burst into tears and fled to her room.

7 . Quiet Quitting
While not a new concept, the term “quiet quitting” has recently gained popularity on social media.
What is quiet quitting?
Quiet quitting doesn’t mean an employee has left their job, but rather has limited their tasks to avoid working longer hours.
Quiet quitting may be a popular term, but this practice isn’t new. Workers have quietly quit their jobs for years to look for something new, whether it was because of poor pay, unmanageable workload, burnout or lack of growth opportunities.
Working from home has also changed the dynamics of the workplace because employees and managers are communicating in different ways through online meetings. These interactions may feel more formal than the chat sessions that happen in an office. Limited meetings can cause a disconnect between employees and management.
How can businesses help employees?
The biggest way to prevent disengagement is to improve the employees’ experience. Talk to employees, gather their feedback and discuss what can be done to make them feel appreciated. Make sure workloads are realistic and that there are appropriate boundaries to maintain a work-life balance.
Further, managers should clearly outline paths of career progression to each employee.
A.Why are employees quietly quitting? |
B.Why is quiet quitting beneficial to mental health? |
C.They set clear boundaries to improve work-life balance. |
D.Employees are more likely to be engaged when they have specific targets. |
E.However, quiet quitting could be a sign that an employee is not happy in their position. |
F.Regular support and praise that make employees feel valued and connected can get lost. |
G.Managers must learn how to have conversations to help employees reduce disengagement and burnout. |
8 . If a president, a legendary philosopher, and one of the best-selling authors of all time credited the same secret for their success, would you try to follow it too? What if the secret was something you already knew how to do? In fact, you probably do it every day. Here’s what Friedrich Nietzsche wrote: “It is only ideas gained from walking that have any worth.” Thomas Jefferson: “Walking is the best possible exercise. Habituate yourself to walk very far.” And Charles Dickens made his point: “If I could not walk far and fast, I think I should just explode and perish (死亡).”
Researchers have traced numerous connections between walking and generating ideas. A Stanford University study found that participants were 81 percent more creative when walking as opposed to sitting. According to the study, walking outside — versus on a treadmill (跑步机) — produces the most novel and highest-quality ideas in participants who walked and then sat down to do creative work.
The movement aspect of walking is obviously key. You’ve probably heard the phrase Exercise your creativity, which refers to the brain as muscle. Our creative mindset is triggered by physical movement, which is exactly why walking — with your dog, a friend, or alone — feeds creative thinking. Just by going outside, you are stepping out of your habitual surroundings and your comfort zone, which is necessary if you want to open your mind to new possibilities.
Research has shown that immersion in nature, and the corresponding disconnection from multimedia and technology, increased performance on a creative problem-solving task by a full 50 percent in a group of hikers.
So why not set a creativity goal that starts with walking? Turn off your phone and give yourself the chance to be present in the world, to hear conversations and natural sounds, to notice the way people move, the way the sun reflects in a puddle. Walk not just for exercise. Walk for wonder.

9 . A growing number of Americans are turning gas-powered vehicles into electric ones by using a process called an electric power train conversion. Such conversions are becoming more popular as battery technology gets better and the world turns toward cleaner energy sources.
Kevin Erickson owns a 1972 Plymouth Satellite that he renamed “Electrollite” after conversion. Now, the car can go from a still position to 97 kilometers per hour in about three seconds. Its top speed is almost 250 kilometers per hour.
Jonathan Klinger is vice president of car culture for Hagerty Insurance. He said converting classic cars into EVs is “definitely a trend”, although research on the activity is limited. In May, the Michigan-based company did a web-based study of about 25,000 automobile lovers. The top three reasons for converting the vehicles were for better performance, for a fun project, and because of environmental concerns. He doesn’t think electric motors will replace all gas engines. Some car lovers want to keep the sound of older cars' original engines. Electric conversions require special knowledge to complete. They also involve many difficulties like safety concerns. And then there is the price.
Sean Moudry, who co-owns Inspire EV, a small conversion business near Denver, recently worked on a 1965 Ford Mustang. The year-and-a-half-long project cost more than $100,000. Moudry and his partners replaced the gas engine with a motor from a crashed Tesla Model S. He says many people don’t have the resources necessary to carry out this kind of project. As a result, he says, it will take 20 years for electric conversions to become common.
But that reality could be coming sooner than expected, says Mike Spagnola, president and CEO of the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), a trade group. He said that electric vehicle products took about 1950 square meters of marketing space at SEMA's yearly show in Las Vegas this fall. That was up from only 232 square meters at the 2021 show.
