It was somewhere between spring and summer, and my mom and I were driving through the countryside. Back then, I was 13 years old, and always felt unhappy with Mom. But I didn’t know that this trip was going to be a special one.

A pot of flowers sat in the back seat, whose heavenly fragrance(香味)filled the car. Suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, my mom stopped the car. “What are you doing?” I shouted, fearing that the car had broken down and we’d be trapped there, so far from home. But that wasn’t the case. My mom jumped out of the car, grabbing(抓)the flowers from the back seat. “It’ll just be a minute,” she called back through the open windows.

I impatiently looked at the side of the road before finding a little sign showing that it was a nursing home. I looked back to the building, a little annoyed, as my mom reappeared ——empty- handed.

Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask, “Do you know someone there?” She shook her head. “Then what did you do with the flowers?” She smiled slightly, “I gave them to the receptionist (前台接待员).” “What?” She laughed at my confusion. “I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially those who haven’t gotten any in a while.”

I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we continued our driving, I spoke again, “Did you leave your name?” To this, she answered instantly, “No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank for me.”

Suddenly, still thinking about Mom’s deeds, I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn’t know where the garage was. It also seemed impossible to wait for any passer-by, since we had seen so few people along the way.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要论述了在线健身的利与弊。

4 . Online training is one of the fastest growing parts of the fitness industry. If you’re considering joining the online fitness community, consider these benefits and drawbacks.

One of the most popular reasons for working out following an online video is that it offers ultimate convenience. No need to roll out of bed at 5 a. m. to attend that 6 a. m. boot camp class, which may end up being full when you arrive.    1    And what if you’re on the road? No problem. You can access your workout video through your phone.

2    Most online fitness programs are much less expensive than similar offline programs—most range in cost from $ 10 to $ 20 per month. Some are even free. For example, the online Les Mills+program offers a free 30-day trial of its 1,500-plus workouts.

Online training also has broad offerings. When you head online, you have instructors from around the globe, all ready and willing to help you master your favorite moves.    3    Just because there isn’t a Krav Maga class in your area doesn’t mean you can’t go online to find one led by qualified instructors.

All these are undoubtedly positive-online training provides fitness resources to general consumers wherever they are, without requiring access to a gym or fitness studio.    4

Very few online fitness programs enable the instructor to see you, check your form, and offer corrections based on your performance.    5    This is particularly concerning for beginners, as they’re more likely to do incorrectly. Besides, if you struggle with self-motivation and prefer a social workout environment, online fitness may not be for you.

A.Another is the price.
B.But it’s not without problems.
C.The same goes for different types of exercise.
D.However, online personal training isn’t for everyone.
E.Instead, you can turn it on at home at your convenience.
F.That being said, online workouts aren’t perfect when it comes to safety.
G.This means you could perform exercises wrongly, or even unsafely, without knowing it.

Easton retired(退休) as a school teacher, and he didn’t have enough savings. What’s worse, his wife, Cassandra, had heart disease that needed expensive treatment.

To save his wife’s life, Easton didn’t have a choice but to take up a job, and he found one as a pizza delivery(递送) man at Rooster’s Pizza. On his first day on the job, his co-workers judged him because the sight of an 84-year-old pizza delivery man was undoubtedly a rare one. But Easton didn’t care.

After delivering the first two orders that day, Easton was on his way to deliver the third one, when he realized his car was low on gas. He stopped at a gas station, worried he would be late for his next delivery. Determined to make it on time, Easton grabbed the steering wheel and drove as fast as he could. However, as he reached one of the main roads, a police car stopped him.

When Officer Jenkins and Officer Matthew walked up to Easton’s car, they were shocked to see an 84-year-old behind the wheel of a pizzeria car. Moreover, they didn’t expect an old man to be speeding.

“You see,” Easton said nervously, “I am running late for pizza delivery. We have a policy of delivering pizza within 45 minutes, or I’ll have to pay for it out of my pocket, and I need money for my wife’s treatment. I hope you understand…”

Officer Matthew looked at Easton’s teary eyes and trembling hands and felt deeply sad for him. However, he couldn’t go against his line of duty. They had to give him a ticket anyway. Easton was late for the delivery that day, prompting his manager to deduct(扣除) it from his salary. He was also warned that he would have to leave if he repeated the mistake.

Not losing heart, Easton set out for his deliveries the following day. “Rooster’s Pizza!” he shouted as he rang the doorbell of one of the houses on his list.

文章大意:这是一篇议论文。文章讨论了进食锻炼和快速锻炼的优缺点,告诉人们在做出选择之前,彻底地考虑并与自己的健身教练讨论。

7 . Some people prefer to have a bite to eat before hitting the gym, known as a fed workout. Others would like to wait until after exercising to refuel their bodies, called a fasted workout.    1     Many experts say there’s no easy answer because it depends on the person.

If you want energy and strength for an ideal workout, you need fuel. A fed workout will provide your body with power. Eating before exercise may help you sustain longer sessions and lift heavier weights.     2     Muscle preservation is also an essential component of strengthening your body. Nitrogen (氮) is critical for processing protein that builds healthy muscles. People tend to lose less nitrogen during a fed workout than a fasted one.

Many fitness enthusiasts are not on board with this idea. They report feeling sick and inactive while trying to exercise after eating. With a fasted workout, you may not get the usual indigestion. Experts for fasted workouts further claim that eating afterwards makes your body use its fat reserves for energy, meaning you will burn more fat.     3     It can cause a sudden drop in your blood glucose (葡萄糖) levels, and you may feel dizzy. You may even be more likely to overeat.

4     Not all foods are created equal. For example, if you choose a fed workout, you’ll probably lose a lot of water during an intense training, so you should consider drinking some beforehand. With a fasted workout, it would help if you had some nutrition right after your session is complete. Drink some water. Then, have a light meal or nutritional snack.

Deciding when to eat for an ideal workout is a personal choice. Both fasted workouts and fed activities have their benefits and shortcomings.     5

A.However, a fasted workout might not work for you.
B.How your body will respond is based on your workout intensity.
C.These benefits can result in burning more fat and shaping a slimmer body.
D.To eat or not to eat, that is the question on many fitness enthusiasts’ minds.
E.Think thoroughly and discuss with your fitness instructor before taking a choice.
F.Knowing what to eat for an ideal workout is just as important as knowing when to eat.
G.A person doing a 30-minute session a day may not have a problem with fasted workouts.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了地球上的文化或自然遗产的重要作用和意义。

8 .     1    The great animal migration across the plains of the Serengeti or the towering pyramids of Egypt are such examples. Every country can be proud of its cultural or natural heritage sites. They have been well protected, so the living people can enjoy them today.     2    We are lucky to have UNESCO to regard protection of heritages as such an important task. It sees heritage as “our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations” as well as “important sources of life and inspiration”.

3    As a national park and nature reserve, Jiuzhaigou Valley, just north of the Sichuan Province, is home to impressive snow-covered mountains, thick forests alive with wild animals, beautiful waterfalls and blue lakes, which can easily take our breath away.       4    Similarly, standing in the shadow of the Borobudur Temple, as the sun rises over this grand historic building, we are impressed with the effort, determination and intense belief of the people who built it with only primitive tools. It is in places like these that we cannot help but be respectful, come to understand our limitations as human beings, and know that our duty is to protect them for future generations.

Heritage sites not only often provide answers to questions, but also often pose questions to which there are no final answers at the moment.     5     As Cicero remarked, “To know nothing about what happened before you were born is to remain always a child.”

A.They show people history and culture.
B.Heritage sites are masterpieces of our nature.
C.They make us think about our time on the earth.
D.And future generations can know where they’re from.
E.There are certain things on the Earth we must not lose.

10 . We humans love to stare into our smart devices. We gaze for hours—about 10 hours and 39 minutes a day—at our computers, smartphones, tablets and televisions. Is all this staring bad for us?   It might be, mainly because as we stare at our devices we are exposing ourselves to blue light.

Blue light is a type of electromagnetic radiation with a very short wavelength that produces a high amount of energy. While it’s true that light can damage our eyes under certain circumstances, there’s no scientific evidence suggesting that blue light is harmful to our eyes. But many people still think it is, which is why blue-light-blocking glasses are so popular. So, do the glasses work?

“Everyone is very concerned that blue light may be causing damage to the eye, but there’s no evidence that it may be causing serious damage, ” Dr. Rahul Khurana, a clinical spokesman, told Business Insider.

Blue light exposure is nothing new. In fact, the sun is the largest source of blue light. Moreover, blue light is also present in LED light. But if blue light isn’t harmful, then why are we constantly rubbing our eyes when we’re looking at our screens?   The answer is eyestrain (眼疲劳). More than 60 percent of people experience eye problems associated with digital eyestrain. And blue light, it seems isn’t the cause. Instead, our eyes are so strained because most of us blink less when we stare at our digital devices. So, if eyestrain is the real issue, blue-light-blocking glasses are probably of little use.

1. What do we know about blue light?
A.It has the shortest wavelength.
B.It’s a kind of nuclear radiation.
C.It consumes a great deal of energy.
D.It may come from electronic devices.
2. What causes the popularity of blue-light-blocking glasses?
A.Evidence of their benefits to eyes.
B.Widespread use of smart devices.
C.Belief in blue light’s harmful effect.
D.Scientific understanding of blue light.
3. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?
A.Rubbing eyes makes people strained.
B.Blue light exposure is hardly avoidable.
C.Blue light may connect with tired eyes.
D.Eye problems are not easy to deal with.
4. According to the text, wearing blue-light-blocking glasses may be______.
A.uselessB.harmful
C.tiringD.beneficial
