文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。火星上曾经有液态水,这是怎么形成的呢?科学家们提出了新的理论。

1 . The surface of Mars is etched (蚀刻) with ancient river valleys and lake basins. Some researchers think that liquid water once flowed on the Red Planet. Today, Mars is too cold for much, if any, liquid water to exist. And 3.8 billion years ago, when the flowing water formed, the sun was fainter than it is today, making it even harder to imagine a warm Martian climate. That’s why many researchers think Mars may have gone in and out of deep freezes.

Some researchers have suggested that early Mars only thawed out (解冻) when large asteroid (小行星) impacts or volcanic eruptions temporarily warmed the planet. But Kasting, a geologist at Penn State University, thinks warm windows from such dramatic events would have been too brief to carve the vast canyons (峡谷) that exist on Mars. Now, Kasting and his colleagues have come up with an alternative explanation. They think Mars may have experienced a series of climate cycles caused by changes in the strength of the greenhouse effect.

The idea goes like this: When Mars was cold and frozen, volcanoes continued to belch out the greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and hydrogen into the atmosphere. There, the gas blanket trapped heat and warmed the planet up until liquid water began to flow, forming Mars’ rivers and lakes. However, warm temperatures and abundant water would also have sped up certain chemical reactions that consumed carbon dioxide, mitigating the greenhouse effect and cooling the planet back down again. Then the cycle would repeat.

Kasting shared his theory with other astronomers at the December meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco, and in the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters. So far, Kasting’s team has only shown that such an explanation is possible, according to climate models. But the researchers say field trips could help test the idea by looking for evidence of multiple warm events, and their durations.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要介绍了作者安置一只老龄狗的故事。

2 . Last weekend, my husband and I drove a dog to her new home. Typically, when we have a new dog in the backseat, it’s a young dog. But this passenger was a much different story. Magdalen is a 13-year old dog. Her owner gave her up temporarily when he was sick, but when he fully recovered several months later, he said he didn’t want her back. He had her since she was young but now had no place for her.

The family who had given her a temporary home had children and other dogs and was unable to give her a forever home. When Speak St, Louis, the rescue team I work with, was contacted about the dog, they offered to take her in. She went to a vet (兽医) for a basic health check. But the vet didn’t have great news. Her mouth was swollen (肿胀的) with all sorts of problems. Two teeth fell out during cleaning and eleven more had to be pulled out.

Luckily, a good friend of mine, a dog trainer with a soft heart for seniors, had agreed to adopt Magdalen. On the trip to the trainer’s home, the sweet senior looked so relaxed in our backseat. I felt a great sense of relief and pleasure.

Her owner needed some temporary help when he was sick. But I can’t imagine why he wouldn’t have wanted her back. I think of my own dog and dogs we lost to old age in the past. We’re family and we stay that way forever. She’d be able to live a good life. I hoped, in her new home!

A.Training old dogs.
B.Treating sick dogs.

4. What does the author think of Magdalen’s owner giving her up?
A.She didn’t understand his behaviour.
B.She believed it was painful for him.
C.She was certain he would regret.
D.She thought he made a wise decision.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。本文介绍了骑行电动自行车的好处及推广电动车需从安全性、价格和停车场所三方面入手。

4 . E-bikes are becoming more and more popular. It opens cycling to older people, those with disabilities, people who live in hilly cities where regular cycling requires serious effort.

Three things are needed to make e-bikes popular—a safe place to ride, good affordable bikes and a secure place to park. Safety comes first. For bike lanes (车道) to work, the network has to be continuous, not just forcing cyclists into the middle of a busy street. It should be well protected so that the cyclists won't feel they'll be knocked down by cars. It's necessary to provide good affordable e-bikes to customers either in physical stores or in online stores. Only in this way can people consider buying one as their means of transportation. Parking remains an avoidable problem if we want to encourage more people to ride e-bikes. In Netherlands or Copenhagen, large bike parking lots at train and bus stations encourage varieties of transport. People can easily find bike parking everywhere. This is going to be needed in other cities too for e-bikes to really become a form of transportation.

As a matter of fact, people have found that e-bikes are effective transportation choices. A recent study shows that people who ride e-bikes increase their travel distance from 2. 1 to 9. 2 km per day on average. That is sure to do good to their health. It's also believed that if just 15% of a city’s population turn to e-bikes, it would reduce the carbon emissions (排放) from transportation by 12%.

All of these lead me to conclude that e-bikes are a far better way of dealing with transportation emissions than electric cars. They won't work for everyone, but they don't have to.

1. What is the most important for cyclists?
A.Their safety.B.Affordable bikes.C.Good parking lot.D.Fast transportation.
2. Why are Netherlands and Copenhagen mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A.To show their good e-bikes.B.To show their e-bikes are affordable.
C.To show cyclists have safe places to ride.D.To show they offer good bike parking lots.
3. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 3?
A.The rules of riding bicycles.B.The advantages of riding bicycles.
C.The health benefits of riding bicycles.D.The harmful influence of riding bicycles.
4. What is the author's attitude towards e-bikes?
A.Worried.B.Positive.C.Doubtful.D.Unconcerned.
