2 . Interactions between people and elephants have a long history. Elephants have been trained and used by human beings for thousands of years, for everything from transportation to construction to logging to war.

In more recent times, Asian elephants have been used in entertainment and as a living ''machine'' to help move logs through the jungle as part of the logging industry. The latter changed in Thailand in 1989, when the Thai government banned the use of elephants in the logging industry. Owners of elephants had very little choice but to turn to tourism to earn enough to care for themselves and their elephants by offering elephant riding to tourists.

Mahouts (象夫) are the elephant handlers who you will see riding or managing the elephants at any camp you visit. The traditional mahout life isn't easy. They are bonded to their elephant and they rarely have time off or time for family.

These years, younger mahouts in Thailand have been more likely to leave the mahout life to find jobs in the city, resulting in elephants having to get used to multiple mahouts. This can lead to additional stress on the elephant, or result in abuse by a mahout trying to manage an elephant that hasn’t built any level of trust with him.

Opponents of elephant riding may suggest that elephant rides be illegal. My worry is that an immediate ban could lead to another massive change in how elephants are treated, similar to ending elephant logging in 1989. How will mahouts that are currently making a living and supporting their elephants through rides be able to continue to do so? The average lifespan of an elephant is 60 years. Any solution needs to take into account the long-term effects on the elephants currently employed giving rides.

1. What happened in 1989 in Thailand?
A.Elephants lost their jobs.B.Elephants joined in tourism.
C.Entertainment was forbidden.D.The government banned logging.
2. What will cause the ill treatment of some elephants?
A.The great stress to make money.
B.The former masters’ leaving them.
C.The heavy load on the elephants.
D.The owners' mistrust of the elephants.
3. What's the best title for the passage?
A.Will You Go to Thailand?
B.Why are Elephants Trained?
C.How do Mahouts Train Elephants?
D.Should You Ride Elephants in Thailand?
4. Why does the author write this passage?
A.To present a problem.B.To criticize mahouts.
C.To introduce Thailand.D.To record his experience.

3 . As a basic food in the Asian diet, soybeans(大豆) have been used to make tofu and soy milk for hundreds of years. But now, they are also being turned into an alternative to plastic wrap.

William Chen, a professor of food science and technology at Singapore's Nanyang Technological University, invented the environmentally﹣friendly food wrap. It's made of cellulose(纤维素),a form of fiber, obtained from the waste generated by soy bean product producers. The beans are pressed to squeeze out juice that's used to make tofu and soy milk. And what's left is usually thrown away, but Chen takes the waste and puts it through a fermentation(发酵) process, during which cellulose is produced.

Cellulose﹣based plastic wraps have been on the market for a few years, but Chen says that most are made from wood or corn, grown for that purpose. By contrast, his wrap is made from a waste product, which doesn't compete with other crops for land and is more sustainable. Chen's technology could help to solve two problems at once: cutting plastic production and reducing the amount of food waste."In Singapore, the amount of food waste generated every year could fill up 15,000 Olympic﹣sized swimming pools," Chen says.

F&N, a soy﹣based drinks producer, has partnered with Chen's lab and provides the product, straight from the factory. The company is conducting a study to assess whether the food wrap could complete commercially with conventional products. Chen adds,"The soy﹣based wrap costs almost nothing to make in the lab because the raw materials are free. Commercial production would involve additional expenses, such as storage and quality control, however, we have not calculated those costs yet."

Chen hopes neighboring soy﹣loving countries will be inspired by Singapore to adopt his innovation. "My dream is that our technology, which is cheap and simple, will cut plastic and food waste and create a cleaner environment," Chen says.

1. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.The introduction to William Chen.
B.The process of producing soy milk.
C.The way to make soy﹣based wrap.
D.The benefit of eating soy products.
2. What's the biggest difference of Chen's wrap from other cellulose﹣based plastic wraps?
A.It saves land for industry.
B.It's more easily broken down.
C.It is made from the food waste.
D.It has been put into practice for many years.
3. What will commercial production of the food wrap cause?
A.A lack of competitiveness.
B.Poor quality of the wraps.
C.A shortage of raw material.
D.An increase in production costs.
4. From which is the text probably taken?
A.A personal diary.
B.A travel guide.
C.A book review.
D.A scientific magazine.

4 . Almost all calligraphy(书法) lovers agree that writing characters with a brush and ink on straw paper offers a way to communicate with not only history and culture, but also oneself. But now Chinese character handwriting is under threat from computers and mobile phones.

A college graduate looking for a job was reportedly turned down by a company because he wrote 24 characters incorrectly in a 400character handwritten resume. A survey by HorizonKey, covering people from 12 major cities in China, found that nearly one third of those interviewed often experience “character amnesia(遗忘)”, with 94 percent saying this is a problem for them.

The main reason is that most Chinese rely too much on the pinyinbased Chinese language input method, which is replacing the tradition of writing characters stroke(笔画) by stroke. The software will conveniently choose the right characters according to the context or word frequency, as there are dozens of characters with the same pronunciation in Chinese.

Education is another problem. In college, most homework and papers are printed out, instead of handwritten. And few teachers use chalk and blackboards, with Microsoft's PowerPoint the mostoften used software to teach knowledge to students.

The number of electronic devices in the classroom is thought to be another reason why students are easily satisfied with just a poor knowledge of the Chinese language and characters. It is quicker to look up a character in an electronic dictionary, but traditional printed dictionaries offer more detailed information on the usage and meaning of the characters. Students pay more attention to remembering a character's pronunciation, but not the other knowledge related to it, which edictionaries rarely provide.

Another worry is the “pollution” of Chinese characters by Internet language. Young people regard using Internet language as cool and fashionable. After they learn to use these expressions, they automatically include them in their writing.

1. With the example of a college graduate, the author shows ________.
A.that practicing can improve writing
B.why certain people are poor writers
C.that there are differences in students' writing
D.why Chinese character handwriting is in great danger
2. By saying “...those interviewed often experience ‘character amnesia(遗忘)’”, the writer means those interviewed ________.
A.are not good at handwriting
B.can't write characters accurately
C.show no interest in handwriting
D.find jobs much more difficultly
3. What phenomenon is described in Paragraph 5?
A.Dependence on electronic devices.
B.Advantages of electronic dictionaries.
C.Mastery of knowledge of the characters.
D.Disadvantages of published dictionaries.
4. What's the writer's attitude towards the Internet language?
A.Favorable.B.Uncaring.
C.Disapproving.D.Friendly.

7 . One of the most popular street food found in China is no doubt the barbecue. A new program, called Chinese Barbecue, tells the story of this popular food cooked over hot coals on just about every street corner in cities and towns across the country. Barbecued meat is an important part of people’s nightlife.

Shown on June 20, the program has had more than 25 million clicks on the video site bilibili.com. To find the most popular barbecue stalls (摊位), the production team travelled to more than 500 locations in 30 cities across the country. Some viewers compare Chinese Barbecue to Midnight Diner, a Japanese TV program telling stories from late night informal Japanese bars.

“I’m happy to hear this comparison because Midnight Diner is a good program, and we share the same topic― night food,” Chinese Barbecue’s director Chen Yingjie said. “However, they are quite different.” He said that Midnight Diner focused more on food itself, though there was some conversation while people were eating. However, the night food scene of Chinese people means joy and a more lively atmosphere. People eating these barbecue snacks develop a feeling of connection, which can be a cure for loneliness.

The barbecue, regarded as the most ordinary and common night street snack, is different from home-made food by mothers as that is a symbol of family and kinship. The barbecue is where you go to become connected to people in society. And unlike official business lunches, during which people are rather polite, the barbecue lets people relax with old friends and new friends, leaving a lasting impression of friendship.

The world, as a whole, holds deep-rooted good feelings toward the barbecue, either for the taste or the warmth produced by fire. “What we should do is to present the Chinese barbecue just the way it is because with its special ingredients(食材),ways of cooking and more importantly, the special environment and people, the world will recognize it and might fall in love with it just as we do.” said Chen.

1. What do we know about Chinese Barbecue?
A.It has been becoming very popular on the Internet.
B.It is thought highly of by most of the foreign tourists.
C.It mainly talks about the most famous Chinese food.
D.It shows the colorful nightlife in large cities of China.
2. In which way was Chinese Barbecue different from Midnight Diner?
A.It showed more kinds of food.B.It focused more on the diners.
C.It showed the eating habits.D.It was less popular than Midnight Diner.
3. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The importance of the barbecue to family.B.The influence of the barbecue on people’s manners.
C.The influence of the barbecue on people’s lifestyle.D.The role of the barbecue in people’s relationship.
4. Why did Chen Yingjie choose the barbecue as the topic of the series?
A.To show the feature of Chinese food.B.To research a special way of cooking.
C.To help the world understand China.D.To introduce the history of the barbecue.

An 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45-year-old highly educated son. Suddenly, a crow rested on their window.

The father asked his son, “What’s this?” The son replied, “It is a crow.”

After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, “What’s this?” The son said, “Father, I have just now told you, it is a crow!”

After a little while, the old father again asked his son the third time, “What’s this?”

At this time, some expression of anger was felt in his son’s tone when he said to his father with a firm reply. “It is a crow, a crow.” A little while later, the father again asked his son the fourth time, “What’s this?”

This time, the son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again, although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW’. Are you not able to understand this?”

A little later the father went to his room and came back with an old diary, which he had kept since his son was born.

On opening a page, he asked his son to read the page.

When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary:

“Today, my little son aged 3 was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow was sitting on the window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I did not at all feel angry but I rather felt love for my innocent son.”

Paragraph 1:

After reading the diary, the son burst into tears, feeling sorry for what he had done to his father.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was born and grew up in a small seaside town. In my childhood, I often played on the beach with my elder sister, chasing (追逐) the waves and enjoying the seaside scenery.

One sunny summer afternoon, my sister and I were playing on a big rock quite a distance from the beach. We were so happy that we didn’t notice the water rising. When we decided to go back, we were shocked to find that the rock had almost been covered by water and there was no way back to the shore. Meanwhile, the wind blew harder and harder. We got into a panic, waving and shouting crazily towards the shore. Suddenly, I slipped (滑) and fell into the sea. My sister stretched out her hand to catch hold of me. However, she could not stay still, and slid off the rock into the sea, too.

“Help! Help!” We cried. I could feel my body tingling (酸麻) as I tried to breathe for air. I attempted to swim back to the rock, but the water was too deep and the waves were too strong. What made things worse was that the rough water made it almost impossible for anyone to hear our cries. Tears mixed with the water as I struggled in the sea. My sister, although using all her strength, wasn’t able to pull me in. Instead, she was being pushed apart from me by the big waves. The two of us, scared to death, kept crying.

Luckily, two boys playing on the beach happened to see us. They quickly found a stick nearby and approached us cautiously, hand in hand. They tried to pull us ashore with the stick. But the stick was too short for us to reach. Worse still, the wind was getting so strong that the two boys were rocked from side to side, unable to stand steadily. Eventually, they had no choice but to go back to the shore to look for other people to help us.
