文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了儿童因为长时间使用iPad导致视力变差的社会现象。

3 .     1

Chen Chen is 8 years old. For the Spring Festival this year he was given an iPad as a present and never goes anywhere without it.     2     This is serious for such a young child.

Many children in China are suffering the same problem:     3     Xinhua New Agency went so far as to call the iPad the “No.1 killer of children’s eyesight.”

“There are about 30 shortsighted children coming every day,” said Hu Dali, a doctor at Guiyang Aier Eye Hospital. “Half of those children are suffering from reduced vision because they have played with mobile phones and iPads for too long.”

Experts say children’s version is not yet fully developed and their eyes get tired more easily.     4

The iPad uses a very bright LED backlight. A user’s pupils (瞳孔) have to keep getting used to the new light levels. If children stare at an iPad screen for a long time, their eyes do not have time to rest.     5

Experts suggest that users should hold their iPad between 40—60 centimeters away from them. The brightness of the screen should be made comfortable for children. Parents should also stop their children from using an iPad for more than one hour every day.

A.IPad use is damaging their eyesight
B.A month later his eyesight has reduced to 300 degrees
C.Children go eye bad due to the iPad
D.How an iPad influences children
E.This will make their eyesight worse over time
F.It does harm to their eyesight

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章作者详细介绍了混合动力汽车的特点以及优势。

4 . Hybrid cars (混合动力车) are cars that run on both petrol and electricity. They have a small petrol engine and a battery and electric engine to provide electric power.

The general rule of hybrid cars is that the car runs on petrol, and the electric engine kicks in when additional power is needed, for example when going uphill or speeding up. In some hybrid cars the petrol engine turns itself off when not needed, for example when the car has stopped at traffic lights, keeping only the electric engine running.

Traditional cars have large engines to deal with driving uphill and speeding up. Most of the time, this high engine power is not needed, but the engine continues burning up fuel (燃料). Hybrid cars have much smaller petrol engines, pushed by electric engines when needed, so they use less petrol. Hybrid cars are also lighter and aerodynamically (空气动力学地) designed for greater fuel efficiency.

Another way that fuel use is cut is by a system of “regenerative braking (刹车)”. The electric engine is used to slow down the car, rather than traditional brakes. The energy produced by the slowing car is changed into electrical power, which is automatically stored in the battery. In fact, the battery recharges when you brake. In traditional cars the energy produced when braking is wasted.

Car makers have been experimenting with electric and hybrid cars since the late 19th century. The first hybrid car, came out in Japan at the end of 1997. However, hybrid cars appeared in America only in 1999.

As they use less fuel, hybrid cars are cheaper to run. There are also some steps to encourage people to buy them. In some countries, hybrid car owners pay a lower rate of tax, and don’t have to pay on certain roads. In some cities around the world, hybrid cars are allowed to park for free.

1. What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A.Hybrid cars don’t need petrol any more.
B.Petrol engine and electric engine work all the way.
C.Hybrid cars mainly depend on electric power to run.
D.Some hybrid car petrol engines will quit when unnecessary.
2. Which is NOT the reason why hybrid cars use less energy?
A.Smaller petrol enginesB.Scientific design
C.Traditional brakesD.Energy storage
3. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Hybrid cars are cheaper to buy.B.Hybrid car owners don’t have to pay tax.
C.Hybrid car owners don’t need to pay parking fee.D.Hybrid cars will have a bright future.
4. What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage?
A.To sell hybrid cars.B.To introduce hybrid cars.
C.To compare traditional cars and hybrid cars.D.To inform the development of hybrid cars.

5 . In 1990, Hal Donaldson was 23 years old, fresh out of college and found himself in Calcutta, India, where he was asked to interview Mother Teresa.

Donaldson says about the great woman famed for feeding the hungry, “She wasn’t wearing shoes and her ankles were swollen. She sat down with me and was very polite.” After the interview, Mother Teresa asked him, “What are you doing to help the poor?” Donaldson admitted that he was young and wasn’t focused on helping others. With a smile on her face, Mother Teresa said, “Everyone can do something.”

Those words deeply struck Donaldson and forced him to face hard truths about himself.

Hal Donaldson grew up in the San Francisco Bay area. When he was 12 years old, his parents were hit by a drunk driver; his father died, and his mother was seriously injured. To make ends meet, they went on welfare. Donaldson says, “I had holes in my shoes and clothes. When you’re teased at school for that, you just want to escape.”

He managed to do just that. Donaldson got into college and turned his focus to making money for himself. He says, “I was just trying to find my way out of insignificance.” However, it’s easy to overlook others along the way. I was the guy that would see a homeless person and cross the street, so I didn’t have to confront (面对) him. My focus was on climbing to the top instead of helping those trying to climb with me.

Donaldson returned home from India with a different thought. He traveled to eight cities in America and stayed on the streets and listened to stories of the homeless. “My heart broke,” he says. “I knew I could no longer just live for myself.”

Inspired by Mother Teresa’s words and the stories he’d heard across America, Donaldson loaded a pick up truck with $300 worth of groceries and handed them out to anyone who needed help. In 1994, Donaldson created the nonprofit organization, Convoy for Hope, which works with communities across America and around the world. Their work focuses on feeding children, women’s empowerment, helping farmers and disaster services.

2. What can we learn about Hal Donaldson from paragraph 4?
A.He was born with disability.B.He led a hard life as a child.
C.He was well treated at school.D.He survived as an orphan.
3. How does Hal Donaldson describe himself in college?
A.Self-centeredB.SympatheticC.PopularD.Generous

6 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的短文。

A Little Boy

A little boy selling magazines for school walked up to a house that people rarely visited. The house was very old and shabby and the owner hardly ever came out. When he did come out, he would not say hello to his neighbors or passers-by but simply just glared at them.

The boy knocked on the door and waited, sweating from fear of the old man. The boy’s parents told him to stay away from the house, and a lot of other neighborhood children were told the same thing from their parents.

Dusk found the boy lingering on and hesitating what to do. As he was ready to walk away, the door slowly opened. “What do you want?” the old man said impatiently. The little boy was very afraid but he had a quota (定额) to meet for school with selling the magazines. So he got up the courage and said, “Uh, Sir, I am selling these magazines and, uh, I was wondering if you would like to buy one from me.”

The old man just stared at the boy without a word. The boy could see inside the old man’s house and saw that he had dog figurines (小雕像) on the fireplace mantle. “Do you collect dogs?” The little boy asked. “Yes, I have many collections in my house. They are my family here and they are all I have.” The boy then felt sorry for the man, as it seemed that he was a very lonely soul.

“Well, I do have a magazine here for collectors. It is perfect for you. I also have one about dogs since you like dogs so much.” The old man was ready to close the door on the boy and said, “No, boy. I don’t need any magazines of any kind, now goodbye.”

The little boy was sad that he was not going to make his quota with the sale. He was also sad for the old man being so alone in the house that he owned. The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that he got some years ago from an aunt. The figurine did not mean nearly as much to him since he had a real live dog and a large family.

A funny thing happened to Arthur when he was on the way to work one day. As he walked along Park Avenue near the First National Bank, he heard the sound of someone trying to start a car. He tried again and again but couldn’t get the car moving. Arthur turned and looked inside at the face of a young man who looked worried.

Arthur stopped and said, “It looks like you’ve got a problem.”

“I’m afraid so. I’m in a big hurry but I can’t start my car.”

“Is there something I can do to help?” Arthur asked. The young man looked at the two suitcases in the back seat and then said, “Thanks. If you’re sure it wouldn’t be too much trouble, you could help me get these suitcases into a taxi.”

“No trouble at all. I’d be glad to help.”

The young man got out and took one of the suitcases from the back seat. After placing it on the ground, he turned to get the other one. Just as Arthur picked up the first suitcase and started walking, he heard the long loud noise of an alarm.

It was from the bank. There had been a robbery (抢劫)!

Park Avenue had been quiet a moment before. Now the air was filled with the sound of the alarm and the shouts of people running from all directions. Cars stopped and the passengers joined the crowd in front of the bank. People asked each other, “What happened?” But everyone had a different answer.

Arthur still carrying the suitcase, turned to look at the bank and walked right into a young woman in front of him.

She looked at the suitcase and then at him. Arthur was surprised. “Why is she looking at me like that?” he thought. “The suitcase! She thinks I’m the bank thief!”

Arthur looked around at the crowd of people. He became frightened, and without another thought, he started to run.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了和朋友一起外出旅游的注意事项。

8 . Travelling with friends can be an amazing experience where you could make lifelong memories or it could ruin your friendship.     1     Here are some rules you should follow to make sure your next trip with friends goes as smoothly as possible.

2     Sure, you and your friends probably have some similar interests, but that’s not always the case. In an effort to keep everyone happy, go over travel plans and expectations ahead of time. Have each person categorize activities or sights into “must-see”, “want to see” and “would go if we have time”. Plan accordingly and make sure everyone can see some of their top attractions.

Communicate and respect each other. Everyone has personal preferences when travelling— from getting the bed closest to the bathroom or sitting in the airplane’s window seat. But sometimes things don’t go as you like. In this case, share your requirements directly with your travel companions.     3     Have a conversation when problems arise, for communication is the key.

Don’t disappear. When travelling with a group — or even just one other person — you may want some alone time. That’s completely fine, but make sure your friends know where you are and have a way of contacting you.     4

Get off your phone. Of course, your friends will understand if you need to take a call from a family member, or in the event of a work emergency, but other than that, try to stay off your phone.     5     After all, the appeal of this type of trip is to spend time with friends. Just enjoy it!

A.Give each other some space.
B.Include at least one activity for everyone.
C.So it’s important to make sure you and your friend(s) are on the same page.
D.At the same time, listen to their concerns and be respectful of them.
E.Don’t respond to less important work contact or send messages frequently.
F.It’s especially true of travelling in foreign countries or unfamiliar places.
G.And remember that consideration and respect go a long way.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。本文阐述了新加坡南洋理工大学的一个研究小组设计了一种智能设备,这种设备可以采光并将其传输到地下空间。

9 . In Singapore, authorities are looking at the possibility of digging deeper underground to create new space for human activity. The demand for underground lighting is therefore expected to rise in the future. Fortunately, a team of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) researchers has designed a “smart” device to harvest daylight and relay it to underground spaces, trimming the need to draw on traditional energy sources for lighting.

To develop the daylight harvesting device that can sustainably handle the problem, the NTU team drew inspiration from the magnifying (放大) glass, which can be used to focus sunlight into one point. The device sits above ground and just like the lens of a magnifying glass, the acrylic ball acts as the solar concentrator, enabling the sun’s rays to form a sharp focus at its opposite side. The focused sunlight is then collected into one end of a fiber cable (电缆) and transported along it to the end that is fixed underground.

As the sun moves across the sky throughout the day, so will the position of the focused sunlight inside the acrylic ball. To ensure that maximum sunlight is being collected and transported down the fiber cable throughout the day, the system uses a computer chip-based mechanism to track the sun’s rays. The Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates of the device location are preloaded into the system, allowing it to determine the spot where maximum sunlight should be focused at any given time. Two small motors assisted by computer chips are then used to adjust the position of the fiber to catch and transport sunlight from the focused spot.

Assistant Professor Yoo Seongwoo, lead author of the study said, “Our innovation is made of commercially available off-the-shelf materials, making it potentially very easy to produce at scale. We have intentionally designed the device to be lightweight and compact, which makes it convenient for our device to be combined with existing facilities in the urban environment.”

Moreover, the NTU researchers found the device’s luminous (发光的) efficiency far exceeds that of commercially available LED bulbs recorded in experiments. The quality of the light output of the NTU smart device is also comparable with current commercially available daylight harvesting systems which are far more costly.

1. What does the underlined word in Paragraph I mean?
A.Meeting.B.Reducing.C.Emphasizing.D.Feeling.
2. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The inspiration for the daylight harvesting device.
B.The right locations to fix the daylight harvesting device.
C.The working principle of the daylight harvesting device.
D.The purpose of developing the daylight harvesting device.
3. What’s the function of the computer chip-based mechanism?
A.Collecting sunlight and transporting it to the fiber cable.
B.Adjusting the position of the fiber cable automatically.
C.Determining the location of the device.
D.Searching for maximum sunlight.
4. What can we know about the daylight harvesting device?
A.It is far more efficient than other daylight harvesting devices.
B.It costs much less than other daylight harvesting devices.
C.It will gradually replace existing facilities.
D.It’s easily available on the market.

Sports Day was getting close in the school. All the children were very excited and were practicing for the big race. John, one of the fast runners of the school, was confident that he would win for he was not doing anything at all. “You have to work hard to come first in the race John. You are not practicing at all,” said John’s mother.

“Mom, you know how fast I am! Why should I waste my time running? Only I will win; no one else will win!”said John. “John, you may be right but talent (天赋) without hard work is not good at all. This laziness of yours will cost you greatly,” his mother warned him. John just laughed. He was so confident that he would win the trophy (奖杯) as no one else in his class was as fast as he was!.

Tim, a classmate of John, was also participating (参加) in the running race. He was not a fast runner. However, he practiced till late at night and had developed great endurance (持久力) to run the race.

There were a few days left for the Sports Day but John did not practice at all. On the other hand, Tim practiced day and night.

The Sports Day was almost around the corner but John was confident that no one could beat him and had not practiced at all. But Tim with his hard work had become a very great runner.

At last, the Sports Day arrived. All the students showed up on the ground to cheer their favorites. The coach blew the whistle (口哨) and everyone began to run toward the finishing line. It was so exciting. John and Tim left all the racers far behind. Both of them were neck to neck.
