Alice Moore is a teenager entrepreneur (创业者), who in May 2015 set up her business AilieCandy. By the time she was 13, her company was worth millions of dollars with the invention of a super-sweet treat that could save kids’ teeth, instead of destroying them.

It all began when Moore visited a bank with her dad. On the outing, she was offered a candy bar. However, her dad reminded her that sugary treats were bad for her teeth. But Moore was sick of missing out on candies. So she desired to get round the warning, “Why can’t I make a healthy candy that’s good for my teeth so that my parents can’t say no to it?” With that in mind, Moore asked her dad if she could start her own candy company. He recommended that she do some research and talk to dentists about what a healthier candy would contain.

With her dad’s permission, she spent the next two years researching online and conducting trials to get a recipe that was both tasty and tooth-friendly. She also approached dentists to learn more about teeth cleaning. Consequently, she succeeded in making a kind of candy only using natural sweeteners, which can reduce oral bacteria.

Moore then used her savings to get her business off the ground. Afterwards, she and her father secured their first business meeting with a supermarket owner, who finally agreed to sell Moore’s product — CanCandy.

As CanCandy’s success grows, so does Moore’s credibility as a young entrepreneur. Moore is enthusiastic about the candy she created, and she’s also positive about what the future might bring. She hopes that every kid can have a clean mouth and a broad smile.

Meanwhile, with her parents’ help, Moore is generally able to live a normal teenage life. Although she founded her company early on in life, she wasn’t driven primarily by profit. Moore wants to use her unique talent to help others find their smiles. She donates 10% of AilicCandy’s profits to Big Smiles. With her talent and determination, it appears that the sky could be the limit for Alice Moore.

When the United States Congress created Yellowstone National Park, in 1872, the goal was to set aside a place where Americans could enjoy the beauty of nature for years to come. Now, 143 years later, there are hundreds of national parks across the country, and technology is changing the way people experience them. Should park visitors be able to use cell phones? Or should their use be forbidden?

Connectivity presents a real challenge to all of us,” AI Nash said. He is a public affairs officer at Yellowstone National Park. He says cell phone service at Yellowstone is available in parts of the park. This makes it easy for visitors to share photos of their trip on social networking sites. And it’s easy for them to stay in touch with friends and family members. Cell phones are also helpful in emergencies. If a visitor is hurt or in danger, cell phones make it easier to get help.

Some say the ability to download apps that provide information about plants and animals in the park can enrich a visitor’s experience. Others say cell phones prevent people from focusing on the beauty of our national parks. In their view, cell phone towers are unpleasant, and they’d rather hear the sound of birds singing than the ring of an incoming call or the sound of an email notification (通知).

Nash says Yellowstone tries to strike a balance. “Our job is to provide understanding and enjoyment for visitors. At the same time, we aim to protect what people find special about Yellowstone. And one of those things that’s special is the ability to get away from the noise of one’s daily life.”

1. Why did the United States Congress create Yellowstone National Park? (no more than 20 words)

2. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 probably mean? (no more than 15 words)

4. What does the fourth paragraph mainly talk about? (no more than 10 words)

5. What’s your opinion about using cellphones in public places? (no more than 30 words)

3 . Some people think asking for help is a sign of weakness, but the complete opposite is true. It takes strength to ask for help. It’s a hard thing to do. The truth is, there are more good people than bad. People truly want to help others. No one should ever have to be in that dark place.

I have a friend called Diane. Diane is one of the most positive people I have ever known. She is smart and funny, and by looking at her you would certainly think she had a perfect life. No one knew the terrible things she was dealing with. She never asked anyone for help when she was in great trouble. She thought that she would just be bothering people if she told them the truth. She thought loneliness was her answer. She masked her loneliness, but one day she hit her breaking point.

Diane tried to take her life one morning. She was lucky, though. Someone found her before it was too late. People finally knew her problems and with their help she got rid of them. She once told me that her biggest regret was not reaching out to someone sooner. Diane has greatly changed. She’s become positive and is always ready to help others.

Diane and I have grown quite close. She has helped me battle my own problems. She is an example of what help looks like.

To anyone out there who feels they are alone, I hope you know you are not. Even if you feel the world is closing in on you, there are people who care—people who will surprise you in the best ways. The best thing about our technological world is how easily you can reach people. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. You are not alone.

5 . "While extroverts (性格外向者) often make great first impressions with their outgoing manner and lively personalities in interviews, that value and reputation at work diminish (削减) over time,” says Corinne Bendersky, an associate professor of management.

“Extroverts disappoint us over time when they're part of a team,” Bendersky says. “On a team you're expected to work hard and contribute a lot. But they're often poor listeners, and they don't collaborate.”

“On the other hand, introverts (性格内向者) work hard on a team because they care what others think of them. They don't want to be seen as not pulling their weight or contributing 100%,” Bendersky says.

So while companies may be attracted to hiring extroverts because they impress managers greatly in job interviews, bosses also may want to consider whether the extrovert they are considering will be a valuable team player, Bendersky says.

Amy Jen Su and Muriel Maignan Wilkins, two writers, agree and say managers should recognize the strengths of introverted employees, such as their ability to put themselves in someone else's shoes.

“These team members are often easygoing, which can make them exceptional mentors (良师益友) to more junior staff or particularly good sounding boards when you interact with them in one-on-one situations,” Su says.

“Managers must try to help introverts find their voice,” Wilkins says. “Help them see that speaking up is not about self-promotion or being in conflict but rather about offering the team key insights, making better decisions or increasing the efficiency for all.”

What about those extroverts who never seem to be at a loss for words? Should managers cut them off? Managers definitely should weigh in on how an extrovert is affecting others. Wilkins suggests saying something in private to make adjustments.

1. What do we know about outgoing people according to Bendersky?
A.They are good listeners.B.They are good at cooperating.
C.They often make great contributions.D.They tend to perform well in interviews.
2. Which can best replace the underlined part “pulling their weight” in Paragraph 3?
A.Trusting others.B.Making good choices.
C.Doing their full share of work.D.Trying to share their thoughts.
3. What is Su's attitude towards Bendersky's words?
A.Critical.B.Tolerant.C.Doubtful.D.Approving.
4. What does Wilkins advise managers to do?
A.Promote more introverts.B.Learn to work more efficiently.
C.Encourage introverts to speak up.D.Avoid conflict among employees.
5. How is the text mainly developed?
A.By providing examples.B.By making comparisons.
C.By following the order of time.D.By following the order of importance.

7 . Frank Lloyd Wright probably is the greatest architect that the United States has ever produced. He was very gifted and had a natural ability to design buildings. His buildings were not only beautiful, but they were also practical and useful. They fit their purposes very well. Wright’s churches, for example, make people feel like thinking and praying. His office buildings make people enjoy working, and his houses make people feel comfortable at home. However, Frank Lloyd Wright’s beautiful, practical and useful buildings are not the only reason that he is famous. There is another reason.

Frank Lloyd Wright is called the greatest American architect because he started an American style in architecture. Most of the architecture in the United States before Wright was really European, not American. Wright’s buildings do not look like old European buildings. They have their own style. Wright’s ideas about style are still used in the United States and in other parts of the world.

The most important idea in Frank Lloyd Wright’s Style of Architecture is that a building must fit its purpose and the land around it. His houses are often called “grass-land houses” because their lines are similar to the lines on the grassland. Both the lines of the grassland and the lines of Wright’s house are parallel (平行的) to the horizon, the place where earth and sky seem to meet. They are horizontal lines. Most European style houses, in contrast, have many vertical lines that form 90°angles with the horizon.

1. Which of the following best describes the character of the houses that Wright designed?
A.They were very large and beautiful.

3. What’s the most important idea in Wright’s style?
A.Architectural design should match natural surroundings.
B.A building must have grassland around it.
C.American style in architect should be different from the European’s.

4. Which of the following is NOT true about Wright’s “grass-land houses”?
A.The lines of “grass-land houses” are similar to lines on the grassland.
B.The lines of “grass-land houses” are horizontal.
C.The color of the lines of “grass-land houses” is green.

8 . Culture is a way to bring harmony to society via exchange of knowledge and thoughts, and also the respect of others’ belief and cultural heritage. Before I came to China to study business, my only information about the country was what I had read in our school books, TV shows on Pakistan national TV, and Chinese movies.

But once I arrived in China, my view changed. China has made great leaps in development, keeping a strong link to their ancestors’ heritage, hard work and courage. The announcement of the Belt and Road Initiative (倡议) (BRI) by President Xi Jinping in 2013 has provided trade opportunities for participating countries, and can also be a meeting place for the exchange of ideas, thoughts, knowledge and culture.

Being a combination of diverse cultural and traditional systems, the BRI promotes harmony, and through the heritage of the Silk Road, these diversified cultures can treat one another with respect and exist together peacefully. China can play a leading role to maximize identity, cohesion (凝聚力) and creativity of the diverse cultures, nations and people to combine resources along the belt and road and ensure all the countries involved receive mutual (相互的) benefit.

International students coming to China and Chinese students going abroad for studies are cultural ambassadors. They learn the language, local customs, arts and exchange thoughts. The BRI is a chance for the Chinese dream to become reality. China has a lot to share with the BRI countries. China has a rising number of Chinese language learners around the world. Confucius Institutes are non-profit public institutions affiliated with the Chinese Ministry of Education whose stated aim is to promote Chinese language and culture, support local Chinese teaching internationally and facilitate cultural exchanges. As of 2014, there were over 480 Confucius Institutes in dozens of countries on six continents. The Ministry of Education estimates 100 million people overseas are learning Chinese, and the program is expanding rapidly and aims to establish 1, 000 Confucius Institutes by 2020. These institutes are playing an important role for local students to learn Chinese, meaning more job opportunities for BRI projects.

Since ancient times, the Silk Road culture has supported diversity. Accordingly, China needs to maintain relationships with the countries of the ancient Silk Road civilization.

A discussion meeting on how to better carry out the BRI Cultural Development Action Plan was held in Beijing by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Through cooperation and exchanges between countries, the BRI can revitalize (振兴) traditional Silk Road culture by opening up overseas markets, introducing advanced ideas to every participating country.

A.Seeing is believing.
B.Actions speak louder than words.
C.One is never too old to learn.

2. From the passage, we can draw a conclusion that all the BRI countries __________.
A.will remove cultural barriers
B.may achieve a win-win result

A.To acquire more knowledge about China today.
B.To communicate with Chinese-speaking people.
C.To gain benefit from the Belt and Road Initiative.

4. The countries along the Silk Road __________.
A.need to restore their ancient civilization via the BRI

10 . Recently I spoke to some of my students about what they wanted to do after they graduated, and what kind of job prospects they thought they would have.

Given that I teach students who are training to be doctors, I was surprised to find that most thought that they would not be able to get the jobs they wanted without “outside help”. “What kind of help is that?” I asked, expecting them to tell me that they would need a relative or family friend to help them out.

“Surgery (外科手术)”, one replied. I was pretty alarmed by that response. It seems that the graduates of today are increasingly willing to go under the knife to get ahead of others when it comes to getting a job. One girl told me that she was considering surgery to increase her height. “They break your legs, put in special extending screws, and slowly expand the gap between the two ends of the bone as it regrows, you can get at least 5cm taller! ”

At that point, I was shocked. I am short, I can’t deny that, but I don’t think I would put myself through months of agony (痛苦) just to be a few centimeters taller. I don’t even bother to wear shoes with thick soles, as I’m not trying to hide the fact that I am just not tall! It seems to me that there is a trend toward wanting “perfection”, and that is an ideal that just does not exist in reality.

No one is born perfect, yet magazines, TV shows and movies present images of thin, tall, beautiful people as being the norm (基准). Advertisements for slimming aids, beauty treatments and cosmetic surgery clinics fill the pages of newspapers, further creating an idea that “perfection” is a requirement, and that it must be purchased, no matter what the cost. In my opinion, skills, rather than appearance, should determine how successful a person is in his chosen career.

1. We can know from the passage that the author works as ________ .
A.a doctorB.a modelC.a teacherD.a reporter
2. Many graduates today turn to cosmetic surgery to ________ .
A.marry a better man/womanB.become a model
C.get an advantage over others in job-huntingD.attract more admirers
3. According to the passage, the author believes that ________ .
A.everyone should purchase perfection, whatever the cost
B.it’s right for graduates to ask for others to help them out in hunting for jobs
C.media are to blame for misleading young people in their seeking for surgery
D.it is one’s appearance instead of skills that really matters in one’s career
4. What does the author think of his height?
A.He hates to be called a short man.
B.He tries to increase his height through surgery.
C.He always wears shoes with thick soles to hide the fact.
D.He just accepts it as it is.
5. What is the purpose of this passage?
A.To talk about how to find jobs.
B.To discuss the standard of beauty.
C.To warn students it’s difficult to find jobs.
D.To criticize the media for its misleading in pursuing beauty.
