The Scream was painted by Edvard Munch in 1893.
A few years ago, I started to notice big shifts in teens’ behavior. Around 2014, teens started to spend their time much differently from the generations before. These teens and young adults all have one thing in common: Their childhood or adolescence coincided with the rise of the smart phone. For this reason, I call them iGeneration.
What makes iGen different? Growing up with a smartphone has affected nearly every aspect of their lives. They spend so much time on the Internet, texting friends and on social media that they have less leisure time for everything else. Whether it’s going to parties, shopping at the mall, or watching movies, iGen teens are participating in these social activities at a significantly low rate.
Some parents might worry about their teens spending so much time on their phones because it differs from the way they spent their own adolescence. But it is not just different-in many ways, it’s actually worse. Spending less time with friends means less time to develop social skills. A 2016 study found that sixth graders who spent just five days at a camp without using screens ended the time better at reading emotions on others’ faces, suggesting that iGen’s screen-filled lives might cause their social skills to shrink.
In addition, in the annual Monitoring the Future survey, the percentage of iGen teens who read a non required book every day dropped from 60 percent in 1980 to only 16 percent in 2016. Perhaps as a result, average SAT critical reading scores have dropped 14 points since 2010.
iGen shows another break with the previous generations: Depression, anxiety, and loneliness have shot upward with happiness declining. The teen suicide rate increased by more than 50 percent, as did the number of teens with clinical-level depression.
Parents used to worry about their teens spending too much time with their friends-they were a distraction, a bad influence, a waste of time. But it might be just what iGen needs now.
1. How are iGen teens different from the generations before?2. What is another break with the previous generation does iGen show?
3. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
Teen’s friends were regarded as a distraction, a bad influence, and a waste of time by most parents, so it’s not suggested that teens spend time with their friends.
4. Can you offer some suggestions for iGen teens? (about 40 words)
Last Saturday, David was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy of about eight years old. When David passed them, he heard the woman yell. “How stupid you are! You’re good at nothing.” David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs Brown in middle school. After he entered a middle school, David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David behaved. But one day it all changed.
One day, in an English writing class, Mrs Brown asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading it. A few days later, David handed in his story. He didn’t give it much thought. But the next day, to his surprise, the comment “well done” from Mrs Brown came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written. When David read that, he almost burst into tears. He never expected to be praised one day. He suddenly gained some self-confidence.
That day after he returned home, he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs Brown the next morning. And again he was praised. David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs Brown to read them improve writing skills. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it. He was no longer that boy who lacked self-confidence. He gained his confidence, and was hopeful about his future.
He succeeded in entering a college and kept writing. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published. With some more books coming out, he became famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs Brown’s encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.

Jane Addams (1860-1935)
Anyone who has ever been helped by a social worker has Jane Addams to thank. Addams helped the poor and worked for peace. She encouraged a sense of community (社区) by creating shelters and promoting education and services for people in need. In 1931, Addams became the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
Rachel Carson (1907-1964)
If it weren’t for Rachel Carson, the environmental movement might not exist today. Her popular 1962 book Silent Spring raised awareness of the dangers of pollution and the harmful effects of chemicals on humans and on the world’s lakes and oceans.
Sandra Day O’Connor (1930-present)
When Sandra Day O’Connor finished third in her class at Stanford Law School, in 1952, she could not find work at a law firm because she was a woman. She became an Arizona state senator (参议员) and, in 1981, the first woman to join the Supreme Court of the United States. O’Connor gave the deciding vote in many important cases during her 25 years on the top court.
Rosa Parks (1913-2005)
On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks would not give up her seat on a bus to a passenger. Her simple act landed Parks in prison. But it also set off the Montgomery bus boycott (抵制). 10 . Jaguar Land Rover has released new technology designed to constantly monitor drivers and passengers in order to adjust settings to match their mood. The car maker has tested a special system which uses a camera to film drivers to monitor their facial expressions.
If the system detects a driver who is stressed, it can automatically turn on calming mood lighting. The car could respond to a driver who was tired by lowering the car’s temperature, or by beginning to play a specific playlist of music. The car maker has also developed headrest cameras to monitor the facial expressions of passengers. If the cameras detect sleepiness, then the car can automatically dim (使变暗) the passenger lighting to help people go to sleep. Jaguar Land Rover said that the system also uses artificial intelligence to learn people’s preferences, so that it could automatically adjust a car’s settings based on their previous interactions with the car.
Dr SteveIley, Jaguar Land Rover chief medical officer, said, “As we move towards a self-driving future, the focus for us remains as much on the driver as it ever has.”
“By considering the overall behavior of drivers, and using much of what we’ve learned from the advances in research around personal well-being over the last 10 or 15 years, we can make sure our customers remain comfortable, involved and alert (警觉的) behind the wheel in all driving situations, even motorway journeys.”
The system is still being developed and is not yet available in cars, Jaguar Land Rover said.
In 2015, the company released a similar system which monitors drivers to detect signs of sleepiness. The system is now in use in Jaguar cars, and alerts drivers when they become too sleepy.
