2 . When you respect those you share a room with, you may find that your living situation can be quite enjoyable.
Make them a priority. Part of respecting someone is making them a priority in your life. Deciding that they aren’t good enough to devote much of your time to makes them seem unimportant. It also sends the message that you don’t respect them enough to make them a big part of your life.
Give praise. Your partner needs to hear what you like about them, even if you’ve been together for long.
Focus on your partner’s positives. It’s easy to concentrate on what your partner does wrong, particularly if you feel they are lacking in a few areas.
Be honest. Honesty is at the foundation (基础) of a positive, healthy relationship. Being honest strengthens your bond with your partner and shows that you are trustworthy.
A.Attitude is everything. |
B.Adopt a good attitude. |
C.This can be destructive to your partner. |
D.Don’t assume they already know how you feel. |
E.They will exhibit the same behavior towards you. |
F.Tell the truth to your partner, even when it’s painful to hear. |
G.Instead, try focusing on what your partner does right or is good at. |
3 . New research from Edith Cowan University (ECU) has found being confident in the kitchen is not only good for your taste buds, it’s also good for your mental health.
In total, 657 participants undertook the seven-week healthy cooking course. Researchers found those who participated in the program saw significant improvements in general health, mental health and subjective vitality immediately after the program which remained six months after completing the course, when compared to the study’s control group.
“Improving people’s diet quality can be a preventive strategy to stop or slow the rise in poor mental health, obesity and other health disorders,” Dr Joanna Rees said. “Future health programs should continue to prioritise the barriers to healthy eating such as poor food environments and time restrictions, while placing greater emphasis on the value of healthy eating via quick and easy home-cooked meals, rich in fruit and vegetables and avoiding processed convenience foods.”
The Institute has previously found a link between eating more fruits and vegetables, and improved longer term mental health in a larger study collecting more complex dietary data, implying the participants in the current study may have felt better due to improved diet. However, the study showed participants’ mental health improved despite their reported diet not being found to have changed after completing the program.
At the start of the program, 77 per cent of participants who’ identified as female claimed to be confident about cooking, compared to just 23 per cent of those who identified as male. But at the end of the program, cooking confidence and cooking skills were equal across both groups.
This change in confidence could see change to the household food environment by reducing the gender prejudice and leading to a gender balance in home cooking. This in turn may help to overcome some of the barriers presented by not knowing how to cook, such as easing the time limits which can lead to ready-made meals which are high in energy but low in nutritional value.

4 . After starting to play basketball at just four years old, Riley Morrison fell in love with the sport. Now, the nine-year-old from Napa spends most of her time practicing her skills and playing for the St. Apollinaris Catholic Church basketball team in Napa.
When she’s not playing basketball herself, the fourth grader likes to spend much of her free time watching her favorite basketball player, point guard Steph Curry, play for the Golden State Warriors, which also happens to be Morrison’s favorite NBA team.
Morrison has been a longtime fan of Curry because of his impressive and dynamic basketball skills that lead to him being awarded MVP more than once as well as a few championship titles. And when Morrison goes to Warrior games with her dad, Chris Morrison, she always wears her No. 30 Warriors shirt to show support for her favorite player.
When watching games at home, the nine-year-old often pretends to be Curry and tries to practice his strong playing style. However, Morrison isn’t Curry’s fan just for his talent on the court. For Morrison and other young female basketball players, Curry is a hero because of what he does when he’s not playing for the Warriors. Over the years, Curry has become an advocate for women’s rights issues and has spoken out in support of issues like equal pay.
As a husband and father to two young daughters, Curry has become outspoken about how important it has become for him to support his wife, Ayesha, and their daughters. 7 . One of the most popular new outdoor activities is day hiking. For many first-time hikers, it’s important to learn the proper hiking tips and safety rules.
Take out your own garbage. One of the biggest surprises for people new to the outdoors is that many parks and trails have no facilities; i.e., no restrooms or garbage cans.
Don’t move things around. This means no taking home pretty rocks or flowers. Any time you move or remove something, you may destroy an animal s home or a weak ecosystem. Leaving things alone also applies to wildlife, so don’t try to pet a deer or approach a bear for a great photo.
Know when to stay on and step off the trail. Hiking trails are created with specific purposes, which may include preventing pollution to environment and protecting precious plant and animal communities.
A.Enjoy them from a safe distance. |
B.Be considerate of your fellow hikers. |
C.So stay on the trail as much as possible. |
D.Communicate with other hikers politely. |
E.That means you’re supposed to carry back out whatever you bring in. |
F.Just as with any sport or activity, hiking involves certain accepted practices. |
G.It’s also considered proper to step off the trail if you want to rest or have a snack. |
8 . China is betting on its successful hybrid rice varieties to fight food shortage in Africa.
“We’re no longer suffering from hunger,” 55-year-old Georges Ranaivomanana, a Madagascan farmer who took the lead in planting Chinese hybrid rice in his town of Mahitsy. Georges told Xinhua that he hoped that all Madagascan farmers would use the seeds to raise their living standards.
China has been helping African countries develop productive rice farming for years with its hybrid rice. For farmers on the continent like Ranaivomanana, they are “very grateful” to the Chinese as the hybrid rice is the key to better food security and higher incomes.
In May, the China National Hybrid Rice Research and Development Centre opened a research centre in Madagascar to select hybrid rice varieties based on the island nation’s diverse ecological environment, in an effort to find more productive crops for a continent long troubled by insufficient grain output.
In the northwestern Nigerian state of Kebbi, Chinese expert Wang Xuemin stood in a rice field, surrounded by green rice plants. “This year, we are using a new technology,” he said, adding that “it can significantly reduce labor and other costs. “The land, climate and rice farming methods in Nigeria are very different from those in China. We had a lot of problems at the beginning,” said the 51-year-old who has been in Nigeria for 16 years.
In 2006, after Wang and his colleagues had sown the seeds, their field management techniques and large-scale farming equipment could not adapt to the operating environment, and hundreds of hectares of rice fields were almost completely taken over by weeds. “We came to realize that blindly copying the Chinese model is not feasible (可行的). It is necessary to constantly innovate our techniques to fit the local situation in Africa,” he said.
After more than ten years of research and innovation, the Nigerian farm now becomes a major training and mechanized production centre in the country, training more than 1,000 farmers and agricultural machinery management staff.

9 . How many bicycles do you need in your life? For 67-year-old Chai Lin, the answer is 1,300 and counting.
Chai s passion for bicycles dates back to the 1960s when he saw some people riding the two-wheeled vehicle in his home city of Lanzhou, capital of north-west China’s Gansu Province. However, in that era, a bicycle was still a luxury for ordinary Chinese. To get enough money sooner, Chai made use of his talent in calligraphy and painting — a skill he started to learn from six years old — by selling artworks on the street. Thanks to all the efforts and “crowd-funding” in his family, Chai got his first bike in 1980.
After becoming a businessman years later and earning enough to buy fancy motorbikes and cars, Chai’s passion for bikes, however, didn’t dwindle at all. He began to collect bikes of various brands and ages, especially antiques, from around the world through auctions and other ways.
After 10 years’ efforts, the Gansu Sanmu Bicycle Museum, located in Chengguan District of Lanzhou, finally opened to the public in January 2019 free of charge.
The museum has been designated as an off-campus research centre for local primary and middle school students and is also popular with tourists. In the first half of this year alone, it received more than 900,000 tourists. Due to limited space, a large part of Chai’s collection is not yet exhibited and has to be stored in the warehouse, driving him to improve the museum.
“Bikes carry unique and precious memories of our generation. I hope to expand the scale of the displaying area of the museum and provide a comfortable ‘home’ for my bikes,” he said.

10 . As one of the most adventurous places to visit in South America, Patagonia deserves some serious travel time. These are my top recommendations for backpacking in Patagonia:
●Patagonia is probably the safest part of South America. I’ve hitchhiked in Chile without problems and would thoroughly recommend this as a form of transport. (Get tips on hitchhiking in South America here.)
●Car hire is also an interesting and rewarding way of seeing Patagonia, although booking in advance during high season is again recommended. I recommend using Rental Cars and suggest you check out this complete guide to planning a Patagonia road trip for essential tips and tricks.
●The shoulder seasons, October — November and March — April, are far quieter and cheaper for backpacking in Patagonia. Accommodation and agencies in some towns are sometimes not running in October or April though.
●Bus schedules vary depending on the season and change year-to-year. Always visit the bus station when you get to a new place to confirm timings and buy tickets for the next leg of your journey. It’s also important to plan additional days into your Patagonia backpacking trip in case you can’t travel on the day you had initially intended. For more information about this subject, check out this detailed guide about getting to Patagonia.
●Self-catering is by far the best way of keeping costs down on these Patagonia backpacking trips. Where possible, I’ve highlighted the best places to stock up on food. I’ve also written in more detail about visiting Patagonia on a budget.
●However, crossing the border between Argentina and Chile, you cannot take fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese or meat. It will be confiscated and if you don’t own up to it (particularly when heading into Chile), you may be fined.
