1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写。

At first, Michael didn’t see the black smoke or flames shooting from the windows of his neighbors’ home. He and his wife had just parked around the corner from their own house when they got a call from one of his daughters: “The house next door is on fire!” He went to check. That’s when he saw two women and a girl helpless and heartbroken on their doorway.

“The baby’s in there!” one of the women cried. Though the fire department had been called, Michael, then 64, immediately ran inside. “The baby” was 8-year-old Tiara, the woman’s granddaughter and a playmate of Michael’s three youngest kids.

The thick smoke caused Michael to stumble blindly around, burned his eyes, and made it impossible to breathe.

After a few minutes in the smoke-filled house, he retreated outside to catch his breath. “Where is Tiara?” he asked desperately.

“The second floor,” her aunt shouted back.

Michael knew he couldn’t hold his breath for long. However, taking a deep breath, he went in a second time. The darkness was overwhelming. Yet because the house had a similar design to his, he made it to the second floor. He turned to the right and was met by intense heat. He was already out of breath.

“Baby girl, where are you?”

His throat and lungs burned as if he’d inhaled fire instead of the smoke in the air. Every blink stung his eyes. All he could hear was the crackling and popping of burning wood. Then a soft but distinct moan emerged. Still unable to see, Michael fell to his knees on the hot wood floor. He crawled toward the sound, feeling around for any sign of the girl. An unlucky thought crossed his mind: I’m probably gonna die up here.

文章大意:本文是一篇应用文。随着计算机科学的快速发展,互联网的变化超出了我们的预期。本文主要介绍了物联网及其好处,同时也介绍了批评者们的担心。

2 . With the rapid development of computer science, the Internet is changing quickly out of our expectations. In the past, we just had the Internet while now we have the Internet of Things (IoT), which aims to get everything and everyone talking. Attaching sensors to “things”, such as cows, cars and refrigerators, and then assigning them unique IP addresses allow them to “talk” to the Internet. Of course, the IoT will involve much more than a handful of sensors. Networking company Cisco estimates that 50 billion Internet-connected devices and objects will be sending over data by 2020.

Specific Benefits

The IoT will allow people to track things and processes like never before. Airplane manufacturers will be able to continuously track the condition of airplane parts, allowing them to do preventive maintenance and avoid costly downtime. Consumers could install smart meters in their homes to monitor energy usage and observe energy price changes in real time. That would allow people to adjust their habits and use electrical appliances during lower-priced hours.

Some Fears

Some critics fear that the IoT could end up being a fashion that people lose interest in over time. Having Twitter feeds on refrigerator doors may sound cool at first, but the attraction could fade as quickly as the excitement over last year’s smartphone! Other critics are doubtful that companies making Internet-connected appliances will provide long-term software updates. If that happens, a refrigerator or washing machine that should last 10 years or more could last two or three due to the software that’s outdated.

A Positive Example

Early this year, owners of the Tesla Model S electric car received a recall notice alerting them to a charger plug needing to be fixed. Amazingly, owners of the Model S sat back while the company performed an “over the air” wireless update. Customers confirmed the update by tapping on the car’s touchscreen console to see that the Model S was running the latest software version. No trip to the dealer was required!

Perhaps Tesla’s remote fix is a sign of things to come. Someday soon, people’s lives might become a lot more efficient and convenient thanks to the IoT.

1. How do researchers get everything and everyone talking?
A.By establishing the IoT and launching a handful of sensors.
B.By sending people to track them day and night and collect useful data.
C.By communicating with them all the time through the IoT.
D.By connecting sensors with them and appointing them unique IP addresses.
2. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT TRUE?
A.IoT can help people do preventive maintenance and save money.
B.IoT can help people monitor energy usage and observe price changes timely.
C.IoT can help people adjust their habits and use electrical appliances more wisely.
D.IoT can help people investigate things and update a lot of important data.
3. Besides its probably ending up being a fashion, what else do critics worry about the IoT?
A.People will lose interest in it as quckly as the thrill over last year’s smartphone.
B.Whether related companies will provide long-term software updates or not.
C.Refrigerators and washing machines will be replaced by other devices in a few years.
D.The software provided by companies will be outdated easily and quickly.
4. According to the passage, when owners of the Tesla Model S electric car received a recall notice, they ___.
A.just waited in the car while the maintenance is being done through wireless update
B.were required to go to the nearest 4S store to make some adjustments or repairs
C.could definitely depend on the IoT to send them the charger plug to be fixed
D.had to confirm the update with the help of the equipment provided by the company
5. What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Craze is disappearing!B.It’s time to change!
C.It’s all connected!D.The Internet is coming!

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要叙述了舞蹈演员Suanne Laqueur成功自助出版小说的经历。
3 . 阅读短文, 按照题目要求用英语回答问题。(请注意问题后的字数要求)

For most of her life, Suanne Laqueur’s passion for storytelling was shown on the dance floor.

Although Laqueur began writing at a young age, dancing always took center stage. She majored in dance and theater at Alfred University and taught at her mother’s dance studio in Croton-on-Hudson, New York, for years. But when her mother was ready to retire and an opportunity opened for Laqueur to take over the studio, she realized she had no interest in taking on the business side of her art: “Owning a studio is a lot of work — financially, logistically. I love the teaching, the choreographing (编舞), the staging, but I didn’t want to own it.”

Yet Laqueur’s disinterest in running the studio changed when she became a self-published author. In the fall of 2013, she decided to pursue self-publishing as a way of sharing her first completed novel with friends and family. During the process, she realized that following her true passion-telling stories through writing — made the business of the art worthwhile, and owning that business meant she could direct her writing career however she chose.

Starting with her second self-published novel, she began investing more time in marketing and building her audience. Her investment paid off. Since 2014, Laqueur, now 49, has self-published six novels, which collectively have hundreds of ratings and reviews on Goodreads. Gradually, readers pay more attention to her works. In particular, her 2016 novel An Exaltation of Larks stole the show and won the grand prize at the 25th Annual Writer’s Digest Self-Published Book Awards, topping more than 2, 300 entries.

“You have to write the most truthful story to you, and I think self-publishing allows that freedom,” she says, “If you work with traditional publishing, it’s more about what’s marketable. There are trade-offs, which everyone will tell you, but by self-publishing I have control of the book, I have control of the story, and I’m cool with that.”

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was time to go home. “Remember to work on your class speeches for homework,” Miss Walker called, as everyone started talking and packing their school bags. Jenny felt sick. She hated having to read aloud in class. She was sure everyone got really bored listening to her. Once, when Jenny was reading out her holiday diary, Lee was even looking at his watch, a silver and blue one which seemed just magical.

Jenny watched Lee walk ahead of her as they left school. He seemed so clever, and he had a certain sort of shining confidence. He was just one of those people who were good at everything. Jenny sighed. As she turned the corner, she saw Lee’s watch lying right in the middle of the path.

Jenny knew she should just pick it up and return it to him, but she didn’t want to run after him. Jenny bent down quickly, picked up the watch and ran home. On arriving home, Jenny put it on almost without thinking. She was surprised it fitted so well. She walked to the mirror and started practicing her speech. Words just flooded out of her. “I’m going to talk about swimming. I have been lucky. I’ve won lots of competitions. But when I’m in a race, I’m not really thinking about winning. I’m just loving the feeling of being in the water...”Jenny laughed with excitement. She walked across the room. She suddenly seemed to have a certain sort of confidence. Turning back to the mirror, Jenny saw a flash of light from the watch in the glass. The flashes of silver seemed almost magical. So maybe Lee’s watch really DID have something magic.

The next day, as the lesson began, Miss Walker asked who was going to be brave and go first. No-body moved. Jenny slowly raised her arm. Before Miss Walker could say anything, there was a shout from behind. “She’s stolen my watch!” Lee said angrily, “It went missing at school yesterday.”

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲的是敦煌莫高窟壁画的修复工作及其意义。

7 . It’s a race against time, as generations of cultural heritage conservators at the Dunhuang Academy make a great effort to protect the artistic charm of the Mogao Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, despite erosion (侵蚀) by sand and wind.

The team is devoted to protecting the 45,000 square meters of murals (壁画) and more than 2,400 painted sculptures of the 735 caves of the site, the construction of which spans about a thousand years, from the 4th century to the 14th century. The cultural relics are the product of the cultural exchanges that took place over centuries on the ancient Silk Road. “Our work, repairing murals and painted sculptures, is to better preserve the caves, which promotes the great Dunhuang spirit of inclusiveness to the world and inspires modern people,” says Su Bomin, director of the Dunhuang Academy.

Commonly seen “diseases” affecting the murals include cracking and flaking, as well as erosion that is caused by changes in temperature and humidity of the caves, and the deposition of salts. To restore a mural requires an all-rounder. Restorers should know painting, master the skills of a mason and have some knowledge of chemistry and physics, to be able to recognize the problems and their corresponding causes and deliver a solution. They must also select proper materials and tools, and conduct experiments, before formally carrying out the restoration and evaluating the effect afterward.

The restoration should respect the original work and aim to maintain the status quo of the murals rather than repainting them. When the restorers find some parts of murals missing or fading away, they never repaint them to create a “perfect” appearance in restoration. “Cultural relics are witnesses of history,” explains Su. “When you pursue the so-called intact (完好无损的) look for artistic reasons, you will lose their key meaning.”

Cave conservation is about continuously solving problems. “It needs a long-term research to better preserve the caves, over a much wider time span that goes beyond our lifetimes,” Su says. But at least, they can keep the current look of the murals for as long as possible.

1. What is the main purpose of paragraph 2?
A.To show the popularity of Dunhuang murals.
B.To explain the history of the ancient Silk Road.
C.To stress the significance of the restoration work.
D.To present the ways of protecting cultural heritage.
2. Which of the following best describes the restoration work?
A.Demanding.B.Well-paid.C.Interesting.D.Creative.
3. What should restoring murals focus on according to paragraph 4?
A.Spotting the faded murals in time.
B.Fixing the missing parts of murals.
C.Maintaining the current look of murals.
D.Repainting to perfect the appearance of murals.
4. Which can be the best title for the text?
A.The Artistic Charm of Mural Paintings
B.The Mural Restoration in the Mogao Caves
C.The Successful Experiment on Cave Conservation
D.The Role of the Dunhuang Spirit in Chinese Culture

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。文章主要探讨了撒谎对友谊的影响,并提出了如何处理这种情况的建议。

8 . When going shopping with a friend, Gail Heyman found herself quite awkward (令人尴尬的) when her friend asked her which dress she liked best. Her friend had a clear favorite — a dress that Heyman happened to dislike. “In that case, I lied and said that I like the same one,” said Heyman.

As Heyman’s experience shows, it might not matter all that much if you tell a white lie to make a friend feel good at times. But when it comes to the most meaningful relationships in your life, protecting a friend’s feelings at all costs can sometimes make them fail. For example, if a person is practicing for a job interview and it’s a few days before his interview, and he gives an answer that you think is not good at all and you don’t tell him because you don’t want to hurt his feelings, that’s really not very nice to him, right? Because he has an opportunity to fix that thing.

If you know that lies can have results, why do you still lie often? A study carried out by Tali Sharot, a professor at University College London, found that it’s because people just get used to it. One little lie can turn into bigger and bigger lies over time. “If you habituate emotionally, it will change your behavior,” says Sharot.

Sharot notes that if you’re worried about lying a bit too much, try and notice when you want to bend the truth (歪曲事实). She thinks it’s best to do so when you’re not actually responding to those triggers (诱因). Moving your attention away from shame and focusing more on your values can be a healthy way to start looking at this more actively.

1. How does the author start the text?
A.By raising a question.B.By giving an example.
C.By expressing an opinion.D.By comparing different views.
2. What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A.Be careful about lying.B.It’s OK to tell a white lie.
C.Never should a person tell lies.D.A meaningful relationship matters.
3. Why would people lie more according to the study?
A.They are used to lying.
B.They don’t behave well.
C.They lose track of others.
D.They don’t want to hurt others’ feelings.
4. What does Sharot advise us to do?
A.Try to bend the truth.
B.Change our behavior.
C.Say sorry to the one we lied to.
D.Concentrate more on our values.

2.邀请他线上参加。
注意:1.写作词数应为80个左右;

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。这篇文章讲述了作者Kochai多年来一直在寻找他的二年级老师,并最终与她重逢的故事。

10 . Author Kochai tried for years to reconnect with his second grade teacher – a woman whom he credits with all the success he’s had in life. He hadn’t known any English at all, and it was Mrs. Lung who stayed after hours every day in their elementary school to teach Kochai one-on-one how to read and write – something he managed in just a year.

It was something Kochai never forgot, but after moving to new schools and districts, he lost track of her. The more Kochai’s career grew with success, the more he felt he had to reconnect with the special teacher who kick-started his life as an author.

It was over ten years that Kochai had been looking for his former teacher. Ten years’ calling school districts, searching names on social media, and visiting schoolhouses all proved fruitless. He said he felt like “running into another dead end,” as he explained in a Twitter thread.

“A few years earlier, after 99 Nights in Logar came out, someone reached out to me, out of the blue, on Facebook. It was Mrs. Lung’s husband!” he continued, “Clearly, Allen Lung heard about an article I wrote where I mentioned Mrs. Lung.”

That moment finally came when, after years of anxiety and joyful events both in Kochai’s life, he was doing a book signing event for his new book. “Mrs. Lung’s husband, Allen, rushed up to me, introduced himself, and brought me over to Mrs. Lung, and seven-year-old-me finally got to hug my 2nd grade teacher again.” he said.

He signed her copy with all the words he couldn’t say, but which had been in his head and heart for a decade and more.

1. How did Mrs. Lung help Kochai?
A.By guiding his career planning.
B.By supporting him economically.
C.By teaching him English dutifully.
D.By keeping him company all the time.
2. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A.Kochai made efforts to find Mrs. Lung.
B.Kochai showed on various social media.
C.Kochai failed to get in touch with Mrs. Lung.
D.Kochai sensed it hopeful to connect Mrs. Lung.
3. How did Kochai feel the moment he met Mrs. Lung?
A.Disappointed.B.Overjoyed.C.Embarrassed.D.Satisfied.
4. What can we learn from the text?
A.Mrs Lung made a difference to Kochai’s life.
B.Kochai is satisfied with his success as an author.
C.Mrs. Lung influenced Kochai’s decision.
D.Author Kochai is grateful to Mrs. Lung.
