Money Couldn’t Buy Everything

Fifteen years ago, I was born in a big family. I had been taught that money couldn’t buy everything ever since I was a little kid. My parents are the most hard-working people I have ever seen. As much as my parents tried to teach me these values, some could only be learned through personal experiences.

As a child, I would sit in the church trying to concentrate on the words of the priest (牧师),but my attention was soon attracted by the shining gold and the diamonds worn by the Saturday churchgoers. As my eyes began to wander, I noticed men dressed in their tailored suits and shirts with women in their designer dresses.

My family, on the other hand, was the opposite of rich. Our clothes had been washed so many times that the colors had become dull and lifeless. Although this showed the money struggles of our large family, our faces were always washed and hair neatly combed. When sitting on the old big red and white truck after the service, I pictured the lives led by those driving their brand-new cars, wishing I would be one of them.

I never stopped those daydreams, even when I was in middle school. Since it was a private school, most of the children came from wealthy families. Although I could hide my lack of wealth at school by wearing our school uniforms, my situation was embarrassingly obvious on weekends with my classmates wearing designer jeans and I had no choice but to wear my sisters’ old jeans. I never fitted in with my classmates. To my relief, there was only one girl named Julie who opened her heart to me. I was attached to her. Soon, her birthday was approaching. Julie invited me to attend her birthday party.

Paragraph 1:

However, I grew upset as I couldn’t afford a gift.

Paragraph 2:

When she opened the gift box, my heart was too nervous to beat.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了奥克兰,新西兰最大的城市,是一个多元的城市,充满了不同的文化。

5 . It’s no secret that Auckland(the largest city in New Zealand)is a diverse city full of different cultures and new research has shown exactly how it and the rest of the country are changing.

More than 200 ethnic groups are recorded as living here and Auckland has a wider variety of cultural groups than London or Sydney, with 40 percent of its population made up of different ethnicities.

The changing makeup of the country’s population is showed in the latest NZ Geographic magazine, which focuses on ethnic diversity, age, wealth and attitudes, drawn from the latest census(人口普查)figures.

Massey University humanities and social sciences research director Professor Paul Spoonley said Auckland’s multiculturalism today is way beyond what experts believed likely a few years ago.

Asian communities,in particular,in New Zealand have almost doubled since 2001,when 6.6 percent of the Kiwi people(New Zealanders)were Asian. The proportion(比例)in Auckland was 14.6 percent. By 2006,18.9 percent of the citizens in the city were Asian and today 23 percent identify themselves as Asian.

Nationally, the census showed 11.8 percent of the population was Asian—and that figure was increasing.“The figures are higher than I would have thought a few years back.”Mr.Spoonley said.“And the healthcare system is attracting Asian workers.”

The article also showed that Kiwis had overall become more accepting of migrant communities and particularly of Asian peoples. That had been a hugely noticeable change,Mr.Spoonley said.

An Asian community leader Kai Luey in Auckland said there were a number of things that attracted Asians to New Zealand and particularly to Auckland. “The environment is clean, there’s fresh air and there’s safety of food. There’s a good education system here in New Zealand...”

New Zealand was also considered to be a much safer place than many other countries, such as America,Canada and Australia.

6 . A short while ago, I lost access to my We Chat account.I am not sure why it wouldn’t let me log in; perhaps it was my ancient, out-of-date phone. But I wasn’t upset because it offered me an opportunity to take a break from social media-something more and more people are doing.

In the United States, Twitter and Facebook has seen a 44 percent decline among its younger users. Stars such as Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeren have taken a break from social media because they were tired of so many Internet trolls leaving negative comments. Ordinary people (like me) are turning away from it because of the feeling that they were spending more time online and enjoying less.

It is not unusual for people to spend two or three hours a day posting or reading posts, to the point where it becomes an addiction. And it is an addiction. There is a chemical in your brain known as dopamine (多巴胺) which is sometimes called the “reward molecule”and its release gives you a feeling of pleasure. For instance, when you post a photo on We Chat and get a hundred likes, you feel happy. That’s dopamine at work.

In my case, being off We Chat is actually an added bonus. No doubt I missed my dopamine. And I got e-mails from friends wondering if I was fine or if I was just being anti-social. But I soon began to feel quite peaceful and started to worry less about what other people were doing and concentrate more on my personal life. And I’m getting better sleep at night.

I’m not advocating that all of you quit social media, but spending less time on these platforms does bring you advantages.

1. How did the author feel after he lost access to We Chat account?
A.Calm.B.Worried.
C.Disappointed.D.Surprised.
2. Why does the author list famous stars in paragraph 2?
A.To illustrate the importance of social media.
B.To compare them with ordinary people.
C.To give examples of quitting online platforms.
D.To show the popularity of social media.
3. What does the underlined word probably mean?
A.Desire.B.Benefit.
C.Mission.D.Joy.
4. What might the author continue talking about?
A.How to form good online habits.
B.How to use social media properly.
C.How to be smart online learners.
D.How to cut down the time spent online.

7 . Florence Nightingale was born in Florence, Italy, while her wealthy English parents were travelling in Europe. As a child, she travelled to many places with her family and learned how to speak several languages.

When Nightingale was 17, she told her family that she was going to help sick people. Her parents did not approve, but Nightingale was determined.

She travelled to hospitals all over Europe. She saw that doctors were working too hard. She saw that patients died because they did not get enough care. Nightingale felt that women could be doing more to help doctors take care of sick people.

Nightingale knew that in order for nurses to do more, they needed special training in how to take care of sick people. Nightingale went to a hospital in Germany to study nursing. Then she returned to London and became the head of a group of women called Gentlewomen During Illness. These women cared for sick people in their homes.

In 1854, England was fighting a war with Russia. No reporters wrote about the terrible conditions in the hospitals that cared for the wounded. People demanded that something be done about it. A leader of the government asked Nightingale to take some nurses into the war hospitals. So, in November 1854, Nightingale finally got to work in a hospital. She took along 38 nurses whom she had trained herself.

At first, the doctors on the battlefields did not want Nightingale and her nurses in their hospitals. They did not believe that women could help. But in fact, the nurses did make a difference. They worked around the clock, tending the sick. Thanks to their hard work, many wounded soldiers survived.

After the war, Nightingale and her nurses were treated like heroes. Finally, in 1860, she started the Nightingale School for Nurses. In time, thanks to Florence Nightingale, nursing became an important part of medicine.

9 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I’d been living in foster care (寄养家庭) since I was two. My real mom could give my five sisters and me the care we needed. Since we didn’t have a dad or anyone else to care for us, we were put in different foster homes. I felt lonely and confused didn't know how to tell people that I hurt inside. Throwing a temper was the only way I knew to express my feelings.

Because I acted up, eventually my current foster mom sent me back to the adoption agency (机构), just as the mom before had. I thought I was the most unlovable girl in the world.

Then I met Kate McCann, who adopted me and took me to her home.

When I moved in with Mom, I had my own room for the first time. It had wallpaper and a big closet. I had only a few clothes I’d brought with me in a brown paper bag. “Don’t worry,” Mom said. “I’ll buy you lots of pretty new things. ”

I went to sleep that night feeling safe. I prayed I wouldn’t have to leave.

Mom did lots of nice things for me. She let me have pets and gave me horseback riding and piano lessons. Every day, she told me she loved me. But love wasn’t enough to heal the hurt inside me. I kept waiting for her to change her mind. I thought, “If I act badly enough, she’ll leave me like the others.”

So I tried to hurt her before she could hurt me. I picked fights over little things and the tempers when I didn’t get my way. I slammed (猛地关上) doors. If Mom tried to stop me, I’d hit her. But she never lost patience. She’d hug me and say she loved me anyway.

Because I was failing in school when I came to live with her, Mom was very sad about my homework. One day when I was watching TV, she came in.
