Gateway Arch National Park
This urban park comes back thanks to the Arch’s new Museum and Visitor Center. Give your feet a break after walking over five miles of park pathways with a ride to the top of the Arch to enjoy beautiful leaves. You can even bring your dog: the park is hosting Arch Bark every October.
Gulf Islands National Seashore
Extending some 160 miles along the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico, this series of parks includes a historic building, untouched barrier islands, and sugar-white beaches. Don’t miss the Fort Pickens area, which is a perfect spot to observe wild animals living in the scenic natural environment. With an average high of 79°F and a low of 60°F, the fall weather here is exceptional.
Voyageurs National Park

What You'll Find

Plan Your Visit
Regular hours are from 10 am to 5:30 pm, but the museum does not close until 7:30 pm during the summer. However,the easiest way to reach the museum is by underground or Metrobus. The closest Metro stop is Smithsonian,on the Blue and Orange lines. The 32,34 and 36 Metrobus routes will all take you to the National Mall.

About Denise Herzing
Denise Herzing of Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is the organiser and research director of the Wild Dolphin Project, which has a goal of understanding dolphins’ social system, behaviour, and communication. For over thirty years, she has spent each summer watching Atlantic dolphins carefully in the Bahamas.
Activity Guide:
Purpose:
Dolphins use sound to communicate, but they can’t make sounds in the way we humans make. Out of the water dolphins can make different sounds by changing the shape of their blowhole (呼吸孔), which is similar to changing the shape of our own mouths. Underwater, though, they use a totally different system, and they make sounds without letting any air out. You can learn more about how that works here. In this activity we’re going to try to talk like a dolphin.
Materials:
Nothing! But find a partner, maybe a brother or sister or a parent — or if you have one, a dog or cat. After all, this activity is about communication between humans and animals.
How To Do It:
Take a deep breath, hold your nose to keep it shut, and try to communicate with your partner. If your partner is a pet, try saying its name or asking it to “come here”.
When you’re done, think about what made it hard, what solutions you found, and think why dolphins may have developed to communicate in this way.
Then listen to sounds from all kinds of sea animals and compare your dolphin sound to theirs.

7 . On television all over the world, there are programs about the work of the police. They are popular because they are usually very exciting. In London, there is a television program called “Police Five”—because it is on for five minutes once a week. A television reporter, Shaw Taylor, talks about crimes in the London area. This is a hotel with sweeping staircases and high ceilings—but isn’t locked to its past. There’s a luxurious indoor pool and a restaurant serving British cuisine. If you’re pressed for time, there’s an exit straight on to Platform 1 of York station at the back of the hotel.
The Wensleydale Hostel
Opened in 2019, this 17th-century inn is in a picturesque spot (风景如画的地方) in Yorkshire. It’s a labour of love for the owners Charles and Fiona Merchie who are bringing the place back to life room by room. Rented e-bikes can be delivered to the hotel. Fishing can also be arranged.
The Black Swan Hostel
Tommy Banks was the youngest British chef to win a Michelin star when he took over the kitchen inherited (继承) from his parents. What makes it unique is that it serves exceptionally good, hearty food made from produce grown in the pub’s own garden. Booking several months ahead for one of the nine bedrooms is necessary.
