1 . In the near future, daily newspapers and monthly magazines will probably disappear. Electronic media(媒体) can provide the same information faster and cheaper. The Internet, together with laptops and mobile phones, makes it possible that almost everyone can at any time and in almost any place get some news for free or for few fees.

You'll browse the computer newspapers or magazines just like turning on TV. An electronic voice will tell you stories about the latest events. You'll even get to choose the kind of voice you want to hear. Want more information on the brief story? A simple touch makes the whole text appear.

There are the predictions from the experts working on the newspapers of the future. Imagined as part of home media and entertainment systems, computer newspapers and magazines would unite printed and broadcast news, offering information and analyzing video images of news events.

The continuing loss of readers will lead to a small number of advertisements in newspapers. It makes no sense to spend millions of dollars to print ads.

With the development of technology, more and more electronic media have been created until now, but replacing the traditional newspapers and magazines has a long way to go, because the resistance to computer newspapers and magazines from journalism(新闻业) may be much stronger. Since it is such a cultural change, it may be not until the present journalists(新闻工作者), who aren't used to it, die off that the newspaper industry is not considered as an industry any longer. Anyway, technology is making the traditional newspapers and magazines disappear gradually.

1. Computer newspapers and magazines have all the advantages EXCEPT that ______ .
A.you can choose the kind of voice you like to hear.
B.they are more expensive than traditional newspapers.
C.you can get more information from them easily.
D.you can easily store information for the future use.
2. The underlined word "resistance" in the fifth paragraph probably means ______ .
A.a thought which directs your action
B.an idea which is different from others
C.a force that helps you do something
D.a force that acts to stop something happening
3. We can infer from the passage that ______ .
A.new things will replace the old ones in the future.
B.traditional newspapers and magazines will disappear soon.
C.all technological developments are very important.
D.traditional newspapers and magazines will be more popular.
4. The author writes the article to ______ .
A.tell readers what newspapers and magazines are like in the future
B.let people know the great development of the journalism
C.prove newspapers and magazines are not welcomed any more
D.say traditional newspapers and magazines are better than before

2 . A good modern newspaper is an extraordinary piece of reading. It's great first for what it contains:the range of news from local crime to international politics, from sports to business, from fashion to science, and the range of comment and special feature(特写) as well, from editorial page to feature articles and interviews to criticism of books, art theatre and music.

A newspaper is even greater for the way one reads it:never completely, never straight through, but always by jumping from here to there, in and out, glancing at one piece, reading another article all the way through, reading just a few paragraphs of the text.

A good modern newspaper offers a variety(多样性) to attract many different readers, but far more than the reader is interested in. What brings this variety together in one place is its topicality(时事性), its immediate relation to what is happening in your world and your locality now. But immediacy and the speed of production that goes with it also mean that much of what appears in a newspaper has no more than transient(短暂的) value.

For all these reasons, no two people really read the same paper:what each person does is to put together, out of the pages of that day's paper, his own selection and order, his own newspaper. For all these reasons, reading newspapers efficiently, which means getting what you want from them without missing things you need and without wasting time, demands skill and self-awareness as you change and apply the techniques of reading.

1. A modern newspaper is great for all the following EXCEPT its________.
A.wide varietyB.similar style
C.speed in reporting newsD.popularity
2. According to the passage, the reason why no two people really read the same newspaper is that ________.
A.people look through the news they are interested in
B.different people prefer different newspapers
C.people are rarely interested in the same kind of news
D.people have different views about what a good newspaper is
3. It can be concluded from the passage that newspaper readers________.

C.What is a good newspaper?D.Newspaper.
5. The author wrote the passage to_________.
A.advertiseB.introduce
C.argueD.compare

3 . Hot Air Balloons

A hot air balloon is made up of 3 main parts:

The Envelope
The actual fabric balloon which holds the air.
The Burner
The unit which pushes the heat up into the envelope
The Basket
Where the passengers and pilot stand

The basis of how the balloon works is that warmer air rises in cooler air. This is because hot air is lighter than cool air as it has less mass per unit of volume. Mass can be defined by the measure of how much matter something contains. The actual balloon has to be large as it takes a large amount of heated air to lift it off the ground.

The burner uses propane gas to heat up the air in the envelope to move the balloon off the ground and into the air. The pilot must keep firing the burner at regular intervals throughout the flight to ensure that the balloon continues to the stable. Naturally, the hot air will not escape from the hot at the very bottom of the envelop as firstly, hot air rises and secondly, the floating power keeps it moving up.

To move the balloon upwards, the pilot opens up the propane value which lets the propane flow to the burner which in turn frees the flame up into the envelope. It works in much the same way as a gas grill: the more you open the valve, the bigger the flame to beat the air and the faster the balloon rises.

The “Parachute Valve” at the very top of the balloon is what is used to bring the balloon down towards the ground. It is a circle of fabric cut out of the top of the envelop which is controlled by a rope which runs down through the middle of the envelope to the basket. If the pilot wants to bring the balloon down, he or she simply pulls on the rope which will open the valve, letting hot air escape, decreasing the inner air temperature. This cooling of air causes the balloon to slow its rise.

The pilot can operate horizontally by changing the vertical position of the balloon because the wind blows in different directions at different altitudes. If the pilot wants to move in a particular direction, he or she simply arises and falls to the appropriate level and rides with the wind.

1. The purpose of this article is to __________.
A.explain how hot air balloons work.
B.illustrate why hot air balloons are useful.
C.describe hot air balloons’ structure.
D.inform readers about how hot air balloons are made.
2. What would happen if the “Parachute Valve” could not be released after it was opened?
A.The inside of the balloon would continue to heat up.
B.The balloon would climb up more rapidly.
C.The self-sealing valve would need to take over the role of the Parachute Valve.
D.The balloon would begin to move down more rapidly.
3. Which of the following skills or knowledge would be the most useful to a balloon pilot?
A.The ability to sew the panels of fabric together to make a balloon.
B.An understanding of how propane gas is manufactured.
C.A knowledge of the background of passengers who are travelling in the balloon.
D.A knowledge of air currents and wind directions in the area where he is piloting the balloon.

6 . Mirroring China’s Past: Emperors and Their Bronzes

Chinese bronzes (青铜) of the second and first millennia BC are some of the most distinctive achievements in the history of art. These vessels (容器) were made to carry sacrificial offerings, to use in burial or to honor noble families in public ceremonies. When they were found by emperors centuries later, these spiritually significant objects were seen as signs of heavenly messages about a ruler or a dynasty and became prized items in royal collections. This exhibition—the first to explore these ancient objects throughout Chinese history—presents a rare opportunity to experience a large number of these works together in the United States.

Unlike Greek and Roman bronze sculptures of human and animal forms, most objects from Bronze Age China (about 2000 - 221 BC) were vessels for ceremonial use. Beginning with the Song dynasty (960 - 1279), emperors unearthed these symbolic works and began collecting them, considering them to be evidence of their own authority as rulers. In addition to impressive collections, the royal fascination with bronzes led to the creation of numerous reproductions and the comprehensive cataloguing of palace holdings. These catalogues are works of art themselves, featuring beautiful drawings and detailed descriptions of each object.

From the 12th century onward, scholars and artists also engaged in collecting and understanding ancient bronzes. Unlike emperors, scholars regarded bronzes as material evidence of their efforts to recover and reconstruct the past, and they occasionally exchanged them as tokens (象征) of friendship. Today ancient bronzes still occupy a primary position in Chinese culture — as historical objects and as signifiers of an important cultural heritage that inspires new generations, as seen in the works of contemporary artists on view in this presentation.

Mirroring China’s Past brings together approximately 180 works from the An Institute of Chicago’s strong holdings and from the Palace Museum in Beijing, the Shanghai Museum, and important museums and private collections in the United States. By providing viewers with a new understanding of ancient bronzes and their significance through time, the exhibition demonstrates China’s fascinating history and its developing present.
