3 . For those who have been wishing for real-life chocolate mountains, your dream is about to come true! Just kidding. The chocolate look-alike mounds (土丘) in Bohol, Philippines have absolutely nothing to do with chocolate aside from the fact that during one particular time of the year, they appear to look similar to chocolate.
During the wet season and anytime outside of the dry season, the Chocolate Hills maintain a green color. What attracts people’s attention is the shape of these mounds, as they look as though they were placed there by design, but none of these fields are man-made.
With regard to the origin of the Chocolate Hills, while experts have their own opinions, it’s the Filipinos who have drawn their own conclusion about the Chocolate Hills. According to a popular legend, these hills were a result of two giants (巨人) who ended up throwing mounds of earth at one another during a heated argument. As the fight heated up, they began throwing things such as rocks and sand, which is said to be what created the surrounding area. While some locals believe the legend and some don’t, it is an interesting story nevertheless and fun to think about.
However, the real story lies in the composition (成分) of the hills and this is where experts have a bit more of a scientific reason for the hills being there than just giants. With the help of heavy rainfall and erosion (侵蚀), it’s believed that limestone (石岩) was broken down over time and it’s this dissolution (分解) that created the Chocolate Hills.
The dry season in the Philippines is the only time to see these hills in all their chocolatey glory, and that falls between late November and May. However, since it is just the predicted dry season, it’s recommended that visitors check the weather before planning anything.

4 . The Bosna River is the third longest river in Bosnia-Herzegovina, measuring 168 miles long. The name Bosnia is even from the Bosna River. Unlike other big rivers in the world, there are no dams here. This is due to many protests from environmental groups who believe the construction will endanger local animals.
Source and CourseThe river begins in Sarajevo Canton, flowing through the Doboj Region, then to Posavina Canton. Its source is the Bosna Spring located in the foothills of Mount Igman, just outside Sarajevo. The waters of the spring are extremely pure and serve as the water supply. The area is a national park, popular with both locals and tourists as a spot for a walk, pienie and super photo opportunities.
WildlifeFishing is very popular in the Bosna River, largely due to its rich species of trout(鲟鱼). At the head of the river, ducks make a home where the water is still. With plenty of fish, there are even brown bears wandering the shores. A threatened species also makes its home in parts of the river, making environmentally active groups more against industrializing the river.
HistoryThe Bosna River is an important waterway in the region. During World War II, the Bosna River became an efficient access point to cities with a large industry. Zenica and Doboj are two major cities, with populations of 115,000 and 77,000 respectively, that rest along the Bosna River valley.

5 . Four Places Named After Scientists in Antarctica
There are many scientific breakthroughs made by women in Antarctic. Here are four landmarks in Antarctica and the female pioneers they’re named for.
Jones Terrace (梯田)
The ice-free terrace in eastern Antarctica’s Victoria Land bears Jones’ name. In 1969, geochemist Lois M. Jones led the first all-female research team from the U.S. to work in Antarctica. Jones and her team studied chemical weathering in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, an ice-free area of Antarctica. Through chemical analyses of rocks they had collected, Jones and her team discovered many geochemical characteristics of the valley’s ice-covered lakes.
Mount Fiennes
8,202-foot-high Mount Fiennes, located on Antarctica’s largest island — Alexander Island — is named for Ginny Fiennes. She established and maintained 80-foot-tall radio towers in the Antarctic. In 1985, Fiennes became the first female who was invited to join the Antarctic Club, a British supper club open to individuals who have spent extended time in the Antarctic region.
Francis Peak
The 3,727-foot-tall peak on Antarctica’s Adelaide Island is named after Dame Jane Francis, who is the first female director of the British Antarctic Survey, the national polar research institute of the UK. Her collection of fossils on Seymour Island helped conclude in a 2021 paper that Antarctica’s abundant plant fossils indicate the continent once had a much warmer climate than it currently does.
Peden Cliffs
Peden Cliffs near Antarctica’s Marie Byrd Land are proof of the labor of Irene Peden. She was the first American female scientist to both live and work in the Antarctic, where she used radio waves to study ice sheets. Peden and her team determined how very low frequency radio waves spread over long polar distances by measuring pathways in the ice. They also used varying radio wave frequencies to measure the thickness of Antarctica’s ice sheets.
1. Which place is named after a builder of radio towers in the Antarctic?A.Jones Terrace. | B.Mount Fiennes. |
C.Francis Peak. | D.Peden Cliffs. |
A.Lois M. Jones. | B.Ginny Fiennes. |

[1] Inakadate is considered the home of Tanbo art, a rice field art form. Its story as a world-renowned tourist destination began in the early 1990s, when local authorities realized that youths were moving to large urban centers continuously, and started brainstorming for ways of reviving (焕发生机) the village. One of the proposed ideas was an art form inspired by the local’s traditional rice farming, done by hand for hundreds of years. Tanbo art involved the use of different-color rice varieties to turn local rice fields into giant canvases (画布) for complicated designs that revealed their beauty when viewed from above.
[2] The first rice field artwork was unveiled in 1993, when purple and yellow rice plants were used to create a detailed picture of Mt. Iwaki — the highest mountain in Aomori — along with easily recognized characters. A viewing platform was set up somewhere above the rice field, from which people could admire the unique artwork in all its glory. The project was so successful that Inakadate authorities decided to turn it into a yearly event.
[3] To create the impressively massive rice field artworks, locals use a technique which involves surveying the rice fields, perspective drawing (透视绘图), and the handmade plantation of various types of rice plants to create the desired visual effect. Tanbo art has come a long way in the last three decades, with designs gradually becoming larger and more complicated.
[4] Many locals say that Tanbo art has saved Inakadate, bringing in impressive numbers of people from all over the world and boosting the local economy. According to CoolJP, around 200,000 people flocked to Inakadate to see its unique artworks in 2006, and by 2016 that number had ballooned to around 340,000.

8 . They say everything is bigger in Texas. While that may be true, some of the best things in Texas are quite small. Case in point: tiny Mount Vernon, a town of just under 3,000 people. But if you do come across Mount Vernon, you might just get an intention to stay. That happens a lot around here, and it’s worth noting how remarkable that is.
Tom Wilkinson was born in Mount Vernon 87 years ago and moved back after he retired from his career as a college English professor in Dallas. Like many of his neighbors, Wilkinson can track his ancestors back to the pioneers who settled here in the 1870s. And like many, he values the simple life you can’t easily find in big cities. “People are still polite. They hold the door open for you.” he says, “We grow strong roots here!”
Preserving and honoring the past has been key to helping Mount Vernon survive. The residents have restored and reopened some of the empty stores, including the old barbershop, built more than 100 years ago. An old general store was turned into a combination space. Wander in on any given day and you might find a book club discussion, a Coffee Ladies meet-up, or a work session for the local genealogy(家谱) group among the tables of people chatting over cups of coffee and plates of food.
Mount Vernon has the kind of big hearts you tend to find in a small town. For instance, when a local policeman was diagnosed with cancer last year, ten-year-old Lola McKellar set up a lemonade stand to raise money for his treatments. In 2015, when a 350-year flood sent water rushing into local homes, an army of volunteers showed up to get a wheelchair-bound neighbor and his wife to higher ground, and then came back to help rebuild.
