文章大意:这是一篇说明文,近一个世纪以来,人口从农村迁移到城市,出现了很多超大城市,文章主要讲述了超大城市导致的问题以及解决办法。

1 . A hundred years ago, the largest city in the world was London, with a population of 6.5 million. Today it is beaten by Tokyo. With barely a quarter the population of London a century ago, the Tokyo metropolitan area has since ______ to 34 million, promoting it to first place in the global city league table. Tokyo’s phenomenal growth is largely due to a single factor: migration from the countryside to the city.

This ______ migration can now be seen in scores of cities around the globe. And it has brought us to a crucial moment in human history. In 1990, most people lived in the countryside, with a little over 10 percent of the world’s population living in ______. From next year, the UN Population Division predicts that for the first time in history, more people will live in cities than in the country, and the biggest growth will be in “mega-cities,” with populations over 10 million.

The ______ of mega-cities - there are now 20 in total - has brought with it huge environmental and social problems. Cities occupy just two percent of the land surface of the Earth but consume three-quarters of the resources that are used up each year. Their residents are making ruinous ______ on soils and water supplies for food and on forests for wood and paper.

______ the world’s population to the countryside isn’t an option. Dividing up the planet into plots of land on which we could all survive self-sufficiently would create its own natural disasters, not to mention being highly unlikely to ever ______. If we are to protect what is left of nature, and meet the demand to improve the quality of living for the world’s developing nations, a new form of city living is the only option. ______, governments, planners, architects, and engineers are beginning to wake up to this idea, and are dreaming up new ways to green the mega-cities. Their approaches ______ two main principles: recycle whatever possible and remove as many cars as possible. So as well as developing energy-efficient buildings, emphasis is being placed on increasing the use of ______ and redesigning how cities are organized to integrate work and living areas into a single neighborhood, rather than ______ cities into residential, commercial, and industrial zones.

Planners and architects now agree that to improve the social and environmental condition of cities the top ______ is to cut car use. They say zero-emission cars running on electricity or burning hydrogen are not ______. What is needed is a wholesale rethink of how new cities are laid out — and how existing ones expand — to ______ the need for cars in the first place. One way of achieving this is to build cities with multiple centers where people live ______ their work in high-rise blocks that are also near public transport hubs. In parts of the world this is already taking place.

4 . Directions: Write the summary of the passage with no more than 80 words and the original sentences in the passage are not allowed to use.

Every country has a capital city. It is where the government of the country meets. The capital city is often the largest and most important city in a country and it has more people, shops, businesses, offices and factories than anywhere else.

The Romans founded a city, which was called Londinium, by the River Thames in AD 43. The area is now the City of London, which is the business centre of the city. The Romans built the first London Bridge. In the 11th century, a royal palace and then a minster (a large and important church) were built 3 km to the west of the city. As London grew and became more crowded, and roads and railways were built, people moved to the suburbs of the city to live. What were once outlying villages and towns were swallowed up, forming Greater London. By the 1860s, London was so crowded that railways had to be built underground. The London Underground now carries millions of passengers every year.

As the capital city, London needs good communications with the rest of the United Kingdom and the wider world. Five airports serve London: Heathrow, Gatwick, London City, Luton and Stansted airports. Heathrow is one of the world’s busiest international airports. There are flights to and from about 220 places worldwide, and more than 40 million travelers use the airport each year. There are also new docks, able to handle large modern ships, at Tilbury, near the mouth of the Thames.

Almost all of the country’s main railway lines and motorways, and many of its main roads, radiate (辐射) out from London. Trains using the Channel Tunnel to mainland Europe start in London, and there is a direct motorway link between London and the Channel Tunnel.

On her return to England, 22-year- old Amy and her boy friend Neal decided to take “the road less travelled”. They drove across Mozambique, one of the poorest countries in Africa, but it wasn’t exactly a holiday. Mozambique had two qualities which     1     to them: great attraction as a travel destination and local people who badly needed help. Once there, the couple got off the     2     track and headed for Quirimbas National Park, where they found a tiny     3     of white sand close to a village. Life in the village was hard: there was little clean water and not enough food. Health care was poor and people in the village had a life     4     of 38 years. Amy and Neal had no qualifications in tourism or health care but they had common sense, enthusiasm and determination. The couple     5     to work on a beach lodge, building beach huts from local materials and employing people from the area. Once the lodge was complete, they set up a charitable foundation called NEMA, which received 5% of the money made. This money was used to create clean water points,     6     health care projects, build two primary schools and support conservation projects-it helped to improve the lives of thousands of people. “We wanted 40 to show the world the power of tourism, that it could be a     7     for change, says Amy.

It isn’t easy to get to this village. It’s not a typical     8     holiday with airport pick-ups and drop-offs. There’s no public transport, either. The nearest city is about 260 kilometers away and once there, you have to take a boat or go on a three-hour car journey along badly maintained roads. But the village lodge is worth the effort. Today the lodge as has nine beach huts, with beautiful sea views. There are no overpriced gift rip shops and other tourist traps, It’s the perfect place to take time out, escape the crowds and soak up the sun. Visitors can see the sights- explore the island nearby with a tour guide, go scuba-diving or observe African wildlife. But the     9     for many is getting to know people in the village, taking part in festivals and learning about NEMA’s work.” People who stay with us often come for the diving or the beach,” says Amy,” but it’s the communities that really       10     them away.”

8 . On your next trip, whether it be close to home or beyond, encourage family members to be aware of their senses. Here are five ways to deepen the day's experience and expand awareness.

1. What do you smell?

Campfires, freshly cut grass, a pine forest and sweet-smelling rose gardens all offer an opportunity to smell something special. Talk with the kids about which smells make them want to stick around and which they are eager to pass by. Do certain smells call up a memory from a previous experience? Notice how different members of your family respond.

2. What do you hear?

While out and about, encourage the kids to close their eyes and tune in. Is that the whistle of a train in the distance? Do you hear a horse clip-clopping down the trail or the crying of an ow(猫头鹰)? Listen to the traffic noise in the city, waves crashing on a rocky shoreline or an unfamiliar bird singing in the trees.

3. How does it feel?

Particularly in these changing times, leaving the comfort of home can stimulate a range of emotions extending from excitement and expectation to anxiety and uncertainty.

How might your crew react to the dampness of a coastal town or the dry air of the Sonoran Desert? Who feels tired? Or hungry? Or even homesick? Talk about it.

4. May I touch?

From petting zoos and tide pools to horse farms and turtle shelters, travel has historically offered families the opportunity to reach for the unexpected. Today, many of those rules have changed. Before you head out, discuss your safety rules. COVID concerns aside, colorful coral and certain green, leafy plants might look interesting, but close contact isn't advised.

5. Can I taste it?

While we've been staying home, many families have used the time to encourage kids to expand their food range. It's a good time to talk about the origins of different ingredients and why many are unique to specific regions of the world. Seek out the websites of cities, countries or resorts you might like to visit. Many are offering directions that will enable you to explore the food and drink of destinations around the world. From curry to barbecue sauce, there is a story to accompany every flavor you'll sample.

1. The underlined phrase “tune in” (in paragraph 3) is closest in meaning to ________.
A.listenB.considerC.imagineD.reflect
2. Which of the following is suggested according to the passage?
A.To smell something special and stay longer to recall their memories.
B.To analyze the weather conditions and avoid the dampness or dry air.

10 . Welcome to Iceland! I hope that your trip will be pleasant and that __________ will help you during your stay. It includes very important information you might find useful for your travel and we hope you will enjoy it.

Iceland is becoming a very popular place to visit all year round and we are not surprised. The country with its spectacular, unspoiled, fragile and raw nature, hot springs, icebergs and waterfalls is a feast for the eyes both during summer and winter. Our history and culture is young compared to most other countries. We speak our own language, Icelandic, which due to the country’s isolation in the past, has been very well preserved.

Driving in Iceland can be a bit different from many other countries. We do have a number of gravel roads, single lane bridges, narrow roads, rough mountain roads with unbridged rivers, animal stock near or on the road and weather conditions can change quickly. Therefore driving in Iceland needs your full care during your stay because we want you back safe and happy.

We kindly ask you to help us improve our quality by giving us feedback on how we are doing and what we can do better. Not less importantly, we ask you to help us preserve the Icelandic nature which can be very fragile. Off-road driving is strictly forbidden and please do not litter.

In case of trouble, accident or breakdown please don’t hesitate to contact our emergency phone numbers 840-6010 for south and west Iceland, or 840-6000 for north and east Iceland or one of our many locations around the country and we will do our very best to help you to safely continue your journey.

I trust that your travel in Iceland will be comfortable and pleasant. I wish you a safe journey.
