文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了美国人不安于现状,喜欢旅行的习惯。

3 . It is summer, and the living is comfortable. For many Americans, this is the season to travel. Why? Because school has finished; the weather is great, and most of all, we all deserve a break. When Americans want to take a break, they often head for their favourite vacation spot.

Throughout their history, Americans have been people on the move. Hundreds of years ago, the early immigrants had to travel to get to the New World. Once they arrived, they settled along the East Coast. But they weren’t content to stay there. Explorers and traders journeyed to the unknown western areas. Later, settlers moved west to develop these new regions. As a result of this westward migration, Americans eventually occupied the whole mainland — from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Even today, Americans seem unable to stay put. Research says that the average American moves every five years.

Besides their habit of changing living places, Americans are used to travelling. Some people often go out on business. Their jobs may require them to take frequent business trips. Most companies provide an annual vacation for their employees, and people often use that time to travel. Some people just visit friends or relatives in different states. Others go on weekend trips that don’t cost a lot of money. Those with more expensive tastes choose luxurious resorts and hotels.

Most Americans prefer to travel within their own nation’s borders. Why? For one thing, it’s cheaper than travelling abroad, and for another, there’s no language problem. What’s more, the vast American territory offers different kinds of tourist attractions. Nature lovers can enjoy beaches, mountains, lakes and a wealth of natural wonders. Major cities offer visitors a lot of urban delights. The convenience of modern freeways, railways and airplanes makes travel in America as easy as pie.

Many American vacations are as unique as the people who take them. Families often go on a journey with the kids. More and more family-friendly vacation resorts offer special programs for children. History lovers seek out famous historical sites and museums. Environmentalists prefer “green vacations”. These trips allow them to observe plants and animals closely without disturbing the balance of nature. Some people find sea cruises relaxing and refreshing. Others enjoy their trips by fishing, skiing or white-water rafting.

Americans aren’t the only people in the world who like travelling around. People all over the world enjoy visiting scenic spots in their own country and going abroad to travel. But in America, almost everybody is a tourist sometime.

El Salvador is home to some rather impressive Mayan ruins that show off this once great civilization. Tazumal is one such place, which is believed to be more than 7,000 years old and was left abandoned sometime around the 13th century. Lijiang, China

A winter trip to the southwest Chinese province of Yunnan promises mild, dry and sunny weather —excellent conditions for skiing the trails of China’s highest ski resort, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Home to plenty of wildlife and 400 types of trees, the mountain is located about 10 miles from the UNESCO World Heritage Old Town of Lijiang, an important center for the fascinating Naxi people whose 1,000-year-old Dongba characters are the only living pictographic (象形文字的) writing system worldwide today.

10 . On July 11th Virgin Galactic finally realized the promise that it would take passengers on life-changing trips in its spaceships. For 4 minutes, its six temporarily weightless passengers, including the firm's co-founder, Sir Richard Branson, saw the planet's curvature (曲度) against the blackness of outer space. He may have gloated (窃喜) over beating Jeff Bezos(much richer), Amazon's retired boss, who would go slightly higher, for slightly less time, in a vehicle built by his own company, Blue Origin, on July 20th.

The two are among a growing group of enthusiasts who believe space tourism's time has come. Suborbital (亚轨道) tourism is part of a broader space economy that has boomed over the past decade thanks to technological advances. Those at Morgan Stanley expect the entire space economy to generate$1trm in revenue by 2040, from $350bn today. UBS (瑞银集团) expects the entire space economy to produce $800 billion by the end of this decade. Space tourism,it thinks, will make “a big contribution” to that total.

But that is highly unlikely. For example, space tourism is not even Blue Origin's main goal. The company is focusing on developing a large new rocket for launching satellites, on selling advanced rocket engines to other companies and on winning NASA contracts such as that for a system to land humans on the Moon. In the long run, Mr Bezos doesn't see Blue Origin as provider of services to thrill-seekers.

The business could be profitable once regular flights begin to offset (抵消) the rockets' development costs. But how fast and by how much is uncertain. Without tourist-friendly destinations to visit, space tourism, with its far higher ticket prices, will not be a huger earner.

Another challenge—and the biggest uncertainty—relates to safety. History has shown that a disaster can set progress back by years. Even with no accidents, problems may arise. Strict top down regulation could mean that industry will no longer have the freedom to pursue new approaches to improving safety.

Space tourism may remain a hobby for a few superrich with a desire to take risks and lots of time to spare. Not exactly a mass market, then, for the time being.

1. Why are Sir Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A.To draw readers' attention to the two superrich.B.To introduce the topic of space travel.
C.To describe a debate between the two.D.To prove Virgin Galactic is successful and reliable.
2. What does the underlined “that” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Space economy will produce $800 billion.B.Space tourism will contribute a lot to UBS.
C.Space tourism will boom with a large profit.D.Space travels are offered to paying customers.
3. What does Blue Origin focus on?
A.Flying superrich to space.B.Selling facilities to other companies or NASA.
C.Improving the safety of space travel.D.Developing advanced satellites.
4. Why is space tourism not a mass market now?
A.Problems of security and costs remain to be solved.B.Superrich people are unwilling to pay for it.
C.There are too many destinations to choose from.D.Only superrich are permitted by the government.
