文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了物理定律禁止时光倒流,作者认为,我们不要试图回到过去,应该活在当下,仔细思考决策。

1 . Who has no regrets about things done in the past? Wouldn’t it be nice if, somehow, we could go back to change a couple of bad decisions? This sounds like science fiction.

The laws of physics prohibit traveling back in time for many reasons. If we did travel back in time and changed the course of events, we would be altering the course of history. An example often cited is the grandfather’s paradox (悖论): If your grandfather died when he was still a high school student, he wouldn’t have met your grandmother and your father and you wouldn’t exist.

Putting humans or consciousness traveling back in time aside for the moment, is there anything in science even similar? Surprisingly, yes. At the level of quantum particles (量子粒子), there is something called Wheeler’s delayed-choice experiments that show that actions in the present can influence the past. The experiments use something called the wave-particle duality (波粒二象性) of light and of matter. The fact that the physical nature of quantum objects is undetermined until it is measured. In other words, this means that a particle of light or of matter can behave either as a wave (spreading out in space) or as a particle (staying together) depending on the measuring devices. Long and ongoing discussions about the nature of quantum physics are still trying to work out what this actually means. Do our minds determine the nature of physical reality?

Should we offer food for thought for the future or the past? Unfortunately, these experiments say very little about how we could interfere with the past in events relevant to the human scale. Better to think carefully about decisions than to try to fix them backwards.

1. What’s the purpose of mentioning the paradox?
A.To show it is interesting.
B.To explain Wheeler’s tests.
C.To demonstrate time is different from what we have known.
D.To show it’s impossible to travel back in time.
2. What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A.Consciousness traveling back in time was tried in the experiments.
B.Different measuring devices have the same result.
C.More research is needed in the future.
D.These experiments can determine the nature of matter.
3. Which can best summarize the last paragraph?
A.We should focus on the present.
B.The future food is more nutritious.
C.We can change the past from the experiments.
D.It is never too late to make up for mistakes.
4. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Is changing the past wise?
B.Can we change the past?
C.Do our minds determine the future?
D.Do the laws of physics ban traveling back?

By the middle of the 21st century, we will have used up all the oil that     2     (drive)our cars if at the rate we’re going. Even if scientists develop some new     3     (way)of feeding the human race, the crowded conditions on the earth will make     4     necessary for us to look for open space somewhere else. But none of the planets in our solar system are able     5     (support)life at present. One possible solution     6     the problem, however, has recently been raised by an American scientist, Professor Carl Sagan. His idea is     7     before the earth’s resource are almost exhausted, it will be     8     (total)possible to change the atmosphere of Venus(金星) and so create a new world almost as large as earth itself.

However,     9     his idea is turned into reality, humans have a long way to go. On the one hand, Venus is much     10     (hot)than the earth; on the other hand, there is only a tiny amount of water there.

6 . Up until a few decades ago, our expectation of the future were largely positive. Science and technology would cure all the ills of humanity, leading to lives of satisfaction and opportunity for all.

Now the utopia (乌托邦) has grown unfashionable, as we have gained deeper appreciation of the range of threats facing us, from natural disasters to deadly flu to climate change. You might even be tempted to assume that human beings have little future to look forward to.

But such negative attitude doesn’t make sense. The fossil record shows that many species have existed for millions of years- so why shouldn’t we? Take broader look at our species’ place in the universe, and it becomes clear that we have an excellent chance of surviving for tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of years.

So what does our deep future hold? Perhaps it may be easier to think about the question in long time periods than about the more immediate future. The potential evolution of today’s technology, and its social consequences, is astonishingly complicated, and it’s’ perhaps best left to science fiction writers and futurologists (未来学家) to explore the many possibilities we can merely imagine. That’s one reason why we have launched Arc, a new publication dedicated to the near future.

But take a longer view and there is a surprising amount that we can say with considerable assurance. As so often, the past holds the key to the future: we have now identified enough of the long-term patterns shaping the history of the planet, and our species, to make evidence-based forecasts about the situations in which our future generations will find themselves.

This makes the negative predictions of our future seem more likely to be temporary and unreliable. To be sure, the future is not all rosy. But we are now knowledgeable enough to reduce many of the risks that threatened the existence of earlier humans, and to prevent the lot of those to come.

1. What used to inspire our expectation of the future?
A.Our desire for lives of satisfaction.
B.Our faith in science and technology.
C.Our awareness of potential risks.
D.Our belief in equal opportunity.
2. Which of the following is true according to Paragraph 4?
A.Are limits the range of futurological studies.
B.Technology offers solutions to social problem.
C.The interest in science fiction is on the rise.
D.Our near future is comparatively hard to predict.

9 .

News anchors(主播) must have been reluctant to read out the following news: Xin Xiaomeng began working as the world’s first female artificial(人工的) intelligence news anchor at Xinhua News Agency on Sunday, three months after a male robot joined the profession.

Unlike previous news robots though, Xin does not read news like a cold machine; she reads it almost like a human being. The muscles on her face stretch and relax-and her reactions change-as she continues reading. That’s why many news anchors were worried: Will AI replace us in the near future?

To find the answer, we have to analyse the technologies that support Xin at her job. Three key technologies are used to support Xin. First, samples of human voices are collected and synthesized (合成). This is followed by the collection and synthesis of human muscle movement samples. And third the voices and movements are married in a way that when the Al news anchor reads, the micro -electric motors behind her face move to make her expressions seem more human.

Yet we need a thorough knowledge of deep leaning technology to make a robot imitate a person’s voice. The developer needs to collect tens of thousands of pieces of pronunciations, input them Into the machine and match them with the text or the Al to lean and read. The process for imitating facial movements is similar. The developer has to analyse the movements of the 53 muscles in the human face, make a model set from the collected data for the AI news anchor to lean, and imitate the movements of facial muscles via programs

Both the technologies used to make Xin’s performance impressive are mature. The real difficulty lies in the third -the technology to match the pronunciations with facial movements so that Xin expressions vary according to the content of the news report. In fact, Xins expressions don' t always change according to the content. As a result, her expressions look anything but human. Actually. AI is still no match for human qualities.

1. What does the underlined word "reluctant "in the first paragraph mean?
A.Delighted.B.Unwilling.C.Confused.D.Optimistic.
2. What can we infer about previous news robots?
A.They read news without expressions.B.They looked like a human being
C.They could interview sports starsD.They could interact with audience.
3. What do we know about the third technology?
A.This technology is very perfect so far
B.This technology is quite popular now
C.This technology remains at the theoretical stage
D.This technology is far from mature.
4. From the last paragraph, we can draw a conclusion that____.
A.human news anchors should learn from AT anchors to save their jobs
B.Al anchors perform much better than human news anchors at present
C.Al news anchors won 't replace human news anchors in the near future
D.Xin Xiaomeng s expressions vary so naturally that they are true to life
