1 . I’m 16. On a recent night, while I was busy thinking about important social issues, like what to do over the weekend and who to do it with, I overheard my parents talking about my future. My dad was upset — not the usual stuff that he and Mom and, I guess, a lot of parents worry about like which college I’m going to, how far away it is from home and how much it’s going to cost. Instead, he was upset about the world his generation is turning over to mine, a world he fears has a dark and difficult future — if it has a future at all.

He sounded like this: “There will be a pandemic that kills millions, a devastating energy crisis, a horrible worldwide depression and a nuclear explosion set off in anger.”

As I lay on the living room couch, eavesdropping on their conversation, starting to worry about the future my father was describing, I found myself looking at some old family photos.

There was a picture of my grandfather in his Citadel uniform. He was a member of the class of 1942, the war class. Next to his picture were photos of my great-grandparents, Ellis Island immigrants. Seeing those pictures made me feel a lot better. I believe the world my generation grows into is going to get better, not worse. Those pictures helped me understand why.

I considered some of the awful things my grandparents and great-grandparents had seen in their life times: two worlds wars, killer flu, a nuclear bomb. But they saw other things, too, better things: the end of two world wars, the polio vaccine, passage of the civil rights laws. They even saw the Red Sox win the World Series—twice.

I believe that my generation will see better things, too — that we will witness the time when AIDS is cured and cancer is defeated; when the Middle East will find peace and Africa grain, and the Cubs win the World Series — probably, only once. I will see things as inconceivable to me today as a moon shot was to my grandfather when he was 16, or the Internet to my father when he was 16. Ever since I was a little kid, whenever I’ve had an awful day, my dad would put his arm around me and promise me that “tomorrow will be a better day.” I challenged my father once, “How do you know that?” He said, “I just do.” I believe him. My great-grandparents believed that, and my grandparents, and so do I.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,介绍了“15分钟城市”背后的理念。
2 . 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Imagine having everything you need: health-centers, stores, parks — just a few     1    (step) from home. It could make you healthier and build stronger connections between you and your neighbors.

This is the idea behind the 15-minute city. Here, people can get all the services they need within 15 minutes of home, either on foot     2    by bike. This model is being developed in cities around the world, from Paris to Portland. Carlos Moreno is a scientific     3    (direct) at France’s IAE Paris Sorbonne Business School. He is also a key theorist(理论家)behind the 15-minute-city plan for Paris. “My idea is to create a livable city     4     can increase the quality of life,” Moreno says.

15 minutes’ cities were inspire by the need to     5    (fight) climate(气候) change. In a 15-minute city, the focus is on     6    (build) more sidewalks and bike lanes. Moreno says walking or biking across the city     7    (be) a good way to greatly reduce CO2 emissions (排放物).

Joe Zehnder, chief planner for the city of Portland, Oregon, is developing “20-minute neighborhoods.” “Having stores close     8     home gives people more chances to choose healthy foods,” Zehnder says.

As a neighborhood becomes more convenient, housing costs can increase. This     9     (certain) leaves a lot of people out. Zehnder says his approach is “to try to create more housing and more types of housing, so that families in     10     (difference) economic situations have an opportunity to live there.”

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了太空旅行发展的可能性及其可能会带来的问题。

3 . Space tourism is the term used to describe space travel for recreational or leisure purposes. What was once only a dream, as described in A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke, is now becoming a reality.

Futurologists attempt to make predictions of what life will be like in the future. After the first man landed on the moon, they thought that hotels would be built on the moon by the year 2000. They also considered the possibility that, in the 21st century, families might go for a holiday on the moon. Neither of these predictions have come true yet-but the rapid development of technology may mean these predictions are possible in the years to come.

Space Adventures is currently the only company to have succeeded in sending paying passengers into space. It worked with the Federal Space Agency of Russia and Rocket and Space Corporation Energia to provide flights for the world’s first private space explorers. Each paid over $20 million for their 10-day trip to the International Space Station.

Following successful explorations into space, other companies are now considering the possibility of enabling tourists to visit space. To make it affordable, suborbital space travel is being considered by some companies, like Virgin Galactic. Passengers would be transported to a height of between 100 and 160 km above earth, experience 3 — 6 minutes of weightlessness and a view of the stars before back to earth. This is expected to cost around $200, 000 per person.

Whilst it could be an enriching experience, there are some disadvantages. Many critics say that a huge growth in the spaceflight industry could drastically speed up the process of global warming. The ozone layer would be damaged further and the polar regions would suffer. In addition, space travel is only really affordable for the super-rich, though Virgin Galactic claims to be ‘opening space to the rest of us’.

1. What do you know about space tourism?
A.It is nothing but a dream.B.It’s only in some fairy tales.
C.It’s a sightseeing tour in space.D.It’s a scientific expedition.
2. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The future life on the moon.B.Landing on the moon in 1969.
C.Predictions about trips to the moon.D.The history of the moon exploration.
3. Why is suborbital space travel considered possible?
A.It’s cheaper.B.It’s safer.C.It’s greener.D.It’s convenient.
4. What is some critics’ major concern about space tourism?
A.Its safety.B.Environmental effect.
C.Social equality.D.Its expense.

4 . What do you plan to do when you retire? Keep working? Get more exercise? Or learn something new? You may put them on hold. There's a chance that, sooner or later, you might have to move further than you were thinking, as far as Mars.

On Thursday, National Geographic will show the first-ever Mars show home, giving earthlings (地球人)an idea of what their life could look like on the Red Planet. In the not-so-distant year of 2037, the igloo-shaped structure could be the home of your future.

It shows a house built using recycled spacecraft parts and Martian soil, called regolith, which has been microwaved into bricks. Some parts of the home are recognizable — a kitchen, a bedroom — but there are fundamental differences that are important to human survival.

As the Martian atmosphere is around one hundredth as thick as the Earth’s, people will need permanent (永久的) shelter from the sun;society will move largely indoors. Most buildings will be connected by underground passages and the houses won't have windows. The homes will have simulated solar lighting, or natural light that has been bent several times. Walls will need to be 10 to 12 feet thick, to protect people from dangerous rays (光线)that can pass through six feet of steel, and a double air-locked entrance to keep the home under proper pressure.

"We don’t think of our houses as things that keep us alive, but on Mars your house will be a survival centre, 99 says Stephen Petranek, author of How We’ll Live on Mars. This is not just the stuff of sci-fi. “10 to 20 years from now there will certainly be people on Mars,” Petranek says.

“We’ve had the technology for 30 years to land people on Mars, but we haven’t had the will, ”Petranek says. But two main factors have “completely swung public attitudes”.

The private companies’ participation has forced government agencies to speed up their game, and influential films such as Gravity and The Martian have caught society’s eye.

1. What do the underlined words "put them on hold" in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Put them off.B.Give them away.
C.Carry them through.D.Take them seriously.
2. What can we infer about the show home from the text?
A.It has no windows or doors due to security concern.
B.Its design presents the idea of environmental protection.
C.It has thick walls keeping the home under propel pressure.
D.Its underground passages connect all the buildings together.
3. According to Petranek, what has sped up the process of sending people to Mars?
A.The development of related technology.
B.The competition from private companies.
C.The great influence of the Mars show home.
D.The popularity of influential books on Mars.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.Living on Mars: Possible or NotB.Sending People to Mars: Yes or No
C.First-Ever Show Home: How Is It MadeD.Future Home on Mars: What Will It Be like

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了作者预测未来手机可能会出现的功能。

6 . Forecasting the technological future is difficult at best. Back in the 1980s,the thought of carrying around a small, portable phone seemed to belong in the world of science fiction. Then in the 1990s, imagining a phone that would allow you to surf the Internet something that didn't even exist until 1990was unheard-of. Today, smartphones can surf the Web, run applications and play games, and those with a near field communication (NFC) chip can act as away to make purchases. Oh, and they can still make phone calls, too.

So what will phones look like in 2050? Based upon phone customer behavior, I imagine the future phones will rely more on combining our physical lives with our digital lives. They probably won't be similar to the ones we’re reusing now. They’ll be built into other devices and products. Imagine a pair of glasses that can display a digital overlay on top of your physical surroundings.

I don’t think video chat is taking off despite services like Skype and FaceTime. Rather, the trend seems to be toward asynchronous(非同步的)communication. That means the two or more people in a conversation complete а discussion over time.

We might even see the phone part of phones disappear. Recent phone customer behavior suggests that texting is a more popular way to communicate than telephone calls. Future phones will need a way to display messages but don’t necessarily include voice communication.

Since we’re talking about 2050 here, there’s even the possibility that research into brain-computer interfaces(脑机接口) will have reached a point in which we won’t need a physical screen or microphone at all. Electronics could be built into clothing. You’d link the devices to an interface connected to your brain and post messages just through thought. It’d be a form of telepathy(心灵感应).

But what do you think? Will we be wearing devices that let us communicate easily? Or will we be carrying around the iPhone 47 and answering texts between games of Angry Birds? Let us know your predictions.

1. What will future phones be like according to the author?
A.Texting may disappear.
B.NFC chips can be used for purchasing.
C.Phones may be built into other products.
D.Phones will combine our lives with our work.
2. With the development of brain-computer interfaces,_________.
A.telepathy between people may come true
B.we may send messages just through thought
C.clothing may be used as the screen of phones
D.phones can be connected directly to your brain
3. From the text, we know that__________.
A.people started surfing the Internet in the 1980s
B.we will be carrying around the iPhone 47 in 2050
C.the author’ s prediction about phones is based on phone customer behavior
D.the author is positive about the development of brain-computer interfaces

How will our continuously growing population affect our way of life, our environment, even our planet? No matter how you look at it, we will face     1     extremely serious problem. 文章大意:本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。文章讲述了作者学生时代的两位非常优秀教师对自己早期教育的影响,后悔自己没有及时告诉老师自己的感情,也呼吁大家要及时表达对老师的感情。

8 . My greatest regret in life is that I failed to tell my superb teachers how much they contributed to my early education.

Ruth Hammerman taught English to the eighth-graders. She was the first to show me the rules of what Evelyn Waugh called our “rich and delicate language.” She was a no-nonsense instructor. Unlike common teachers, she diagramed (用图表展示) sentences so we could know the grammar rules. She never seemed to be tired of the simple pleasures of sharing her learning.

Under her influence, I had the strong belief that language needs to be well-spoken and properly written. Yet over the years I never made the effort to find her and to express my thankfulness for what she did for me. Two years after being in her class, I began the study of Latin and French, and the foundation (基础) she provided in English grammar served me well. Sadly, I never looked back.

In high school I took advanced French in a class taught by Richard Miller, the finest teacher I have ever experienced at any level. Mr. Miller brought to his subject a surprisingly deep understanding and new analysis (分析). Reading “Phèdre”, Racine’s classic play, he asked us to note there were 1,654 lines in it, and then pointed out the care Racine devoted to structure. Years later I made the same point — giving Mr. Miller credit — in a college French class, and my professor was surprised by my understanding of the play. Mr. Miller taught us to enjoy literature with particular points of view. Yet I never made the effort in later years to tell him what he meant to me.

Mr. Miller is certainly long dead. If she is alive, Miss Hammerman would likely be in her 90s. In preparing this article, I tried to find her but was unsuccessful.

I am certain my act is common. People often forget to express love and thankfulness to their teachers. I ought to have told Miss Hammerman and Mr. Miller how much they did for me. I suppose they knew their work was effective because they believed in what they were doing. Now I appreciate how special they were.

1. What is the most beneficial part to the author in Miss Hammerman’s class?
A.Grammar.B.Writing.C.Speaking.D.Reading.
2. What is special about Mr. Miller’s French class?
A.He asked students to count lines.
B.He stressed the importance of play.
C.He analyzed literature in a new way.
D.He showed great devotion to students.
3. What does the underlined phrase “my act” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.Preparing the article.B.Looking for the teachers.
C.Failing to thank teachers.D.Copying teachers’ points.
4. What best describes the two teachers according to the text?
A.Creative.B.Frank.C.Humorous.D.Strict.
5. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A.To show love for French literature.
B.To explore the meaning of education.
C.To explain why teachers are important.
D.To share memories of the two teachers.

9 . In the far, far future, bicycles and perhaps skates may be run by jet power, and a new thing to ride may be a small flying saucer (飞碟). Imagine a race between them!

There may be telepathy helmets (心灵感应头盔) that send thought waves from your brain to that of your friend miles away. You just think a thought and your friend knows it! You can have secrets with each other that nobody else can turn in on!

What about the food of the future? Scientists think that much of it will be artificial—made in factories from such surprising things as coal, limestone, air and water. The artificial food will be healthful because all the things that you need to live a long and healthy life will be put into it.

The future hospitals will probably have “body banks” that can give you almost any new part you need to keep on living. People of the future may live to be a lot older than 100 years.

What about highways of the future? Well, a very small child probably will be able to drive a car. Electric signals will hold each car on the right road to get wherever the “driver” wants to go. And it probably will be impossible for cars to crash together. Controls that won’t even have to be touched will make all speeding cars miss each other or will put on the brakes. Driving cars will be as safe as being at home.

But maybe the most wonderful surprise in the future will be weather control. Cities may have giant plastic domes (圆顶罩) over them to keep out snow, rain, or storms. When you plan a picnic in a park, you won’t have to worry about rain. It will rain only when the “weatherman” thinks it is necessary to fresh the air inside the city. All other days will be fair and warm.

The future should be a wonderful time in which to live and the time we are living in now is also a wonderful future to the people who lived 100 years ago.

1. How will you probably talk with each other in the future according to paragraph 2?
A.With a safety helmet.B.By thought waves.C.Through secret words.D.On a special phone.
2. What can we say about the artificial food?
A.It only consists of water.B.It is difficult to digest.
C.It is nutritious enough.D.It can keep us from aging.
3. What can we expect of the future life?
A.Road safety will be hugely raised.B.People will not see a doctor any more.
C.Driving on the highways will be avoided.D.No storms will happen in the neighborhood.
4. Where is this text most likely from?
A.A health report.B.A magazine.C.A guidebook.D.An advertisement.

10 . Don’t you want to talk less and smile more? That seems to be Amazon’s vision for the future of the smart home. According to the company, talking to their devices is just a temporary stage. Next, their gadgets (小玩意) will just know what we want and do it for us without a single command. To plot this route, the consumer tech giant showed off a series of new gadgets at its annual hardware event in September, 2020.

This vision of a smart home has been the road map for home automation for decades. A true smart home doesn’t just react to commands, it can foresee what will happen and take action accordingly. This could include lights switching on when you arrive home, heating turning off when the house is empty, or security drones (无人机) activating when somebody breaks in. Amazon says it’s ready for this domestic revolution, even if it’s still a few decades off.

Connectivity is the guarantee of a true smart home. The updated Echo smart speaker line that was recently displayed doesn’t just have a showy new look, it comes with a suite of tech to keep everything connected. This extended network, which will be launched in the US in later 2021, is designed to support expanding the smart home out to the smart garden and the smart driveway and beyond to the smart neighbourhood.

At the event, Amazon also showed off an actual robot. The Ring Always Home Cam ($ 250, coming in 2021) was perhaps the most fancy offering from the event, and certainly raised a fair number of eyebrows. At roughly 13cm high, the Always Home Cam is a drone with a camera. It rises up from its docking station and flies on pre-set paths. If a security event is detected, it will send warnings to your phone.

Ultimately, a true smart home won’t just rely on voice commands or drones. The less aggressive tech such as sensors, computer vision, and AI will work together to respond to our needs without violating our privacy. But, as Limp says, the true smart home “is a long-term vision, and there’s still lots to be done to make that a reality”.

1. According to Amazon’s vision, a true smart home ______.
A.is already available to the consumers last September
B.will be active and predictive
C.will be limited to indoor activities
D.can only act at its owner’s request
2. About the updated Echo smart speaker line, we know ______.
A.it only connects things in one’s own homeB.it is necessity for a true smart home
C.it has an attractive new lookD.it enjoys great popularity
3. What may the Ring Always Home Cam be unable to do?
A.Call the police.B.Detect invaders.C.Send messagesD.Take photos.
4. What does the passage focus on?
A.Introducing the company of Amazon.
B.Advertising the benefits of the smart home.
C.Talking about how Echo smart speaker line works.
D.What the true smart home is like and some related gadgets.
