Machu Picchu is an ancient city in Peru, South America. It     1     (build) many hundreds of years ago by the Incas, an ancient South American civilization (社会文明).

Wang Junkai, or Karry Wang, best known     8    one of the TF Boys group, is one of the leaders on environmental protection and other public welfare topics among the Chinese youth. In 2016, Wang widely shared the online Wild for Life campaign,    9     gained 400 million views. The Yellow Crane Tower is one of the Four Great Towers of China.     1     (sit) at the top of Snake Hill, on the banks of the Yangtze River, this iconic building is one of the     2     (great) landmarks in Wuhan. There are a number of legends     3     tell how the Yellow Crane Tower came into being. One of them is the story of a wine merchant named Xin. It is believed that one day,     4     immortal being (神仙) pretended he was a poor man and got into Xin’s wine store. Xin, showing no judgement,     5     (offer) the man some free wine. The poor man came back day after day for several years and Xin always welcomed him with the same     6     (warm). One day, as the poor man left the store, he took some orange peel and drew a picture of a crane upon the wall. He said if he clapped his hands, the crane would come down from the wall and dance for him.     7     (surprise), what the poor man said was true. The dancing crane brought     8     much business to Xin that he soon became a very wealthy man. About ten years     9     (late), the immortal being came back to Xin’s store, called out the crane and left with it.     10     (honour) him and the crane, Xin built the Yellow Crane Tower.

Scientists exploring the ocean floor in Antarctica have found a larger group of fish nests than ever before. The discovery came     1     a surprise, and it will help scientists develop a more complete idea of the ocean food web in the area.

In the south Weddell Sea, not far from Antarctica’s Filchner Ice Shelf, scientists were    2     (amaze) to discover a group of about 60 million icefish nests on the ocean floor. Before this, the     3     (large) group of icefish nests that had ever been found includes less than 60 nests. Lilian Boehringer, a research student, was the first     4     (discover) the nests. “They were everywhere,” she told The New York Times.

The researchers used a special device called OFOBS to make two more four-hour “dives” ,    5     (try) to discover the limits of the nesting area. The nests scientists found were in the shape of     6     circle. Each nest held about 1,700 eggs. Usually, Weddell seals (海豹)    7     (spot) in the waters above the nesting site. Trackers     8     (fix) on some Weddell seals show that they dive all the way to the sea floor.

The team placed a camera on the sea floor before leaving,     9     will take a picture of the nests in the area     10     (two) a day for the next two years. They hope the pictures from this camera will help them learn more about the lives of the icefish.

Observing the Earth provides a wealth of information,     1     benefits our daily lives. Now the European Union     2     (design) a so-called digital twin of the Earth, allowing scientists to run simulations (模拟) to predict extreme weather events and other impacts of climate change.

The program,     3     (call) Destination Earth, will use artificial intelligence and supercomputing to input and analyze climate data at high resolutions. It can predict a number of risks including storms, droughts and     4     (rise) sea levels. The program will allow scientists to create a simulation of the planet and its climate and then experiment with changes     5     different conditions. These include temperature, wind speeds and humidity (湿度). It can then observe the knock-on effects of these changes on a     6     (region) and global level. Destination Earth will also help monitor food     7     (secure), changes in the polar regions and global sea level rises.

Several climate simulation     8     (program) already exist, generally running at resolutions of around 100 kilometers. This makes predicting more localized impacts of climate change challenging.     9     Destination Earth team plans on building a supercomputing network which would allow for a far higher resolution, approaching just a few kilometers.

“Destination Earth is a key initiative for Europe’s green transitions. It will greatly improve our ability     10     (produce) climate models with reliability, allowing policymakers to reduce the effects of climate change, saving lives and reducing economic consequences in cases of natural disasters.” said Skordas.

In southern China, there is a famous road     1    (build) across Poyang Lake, which lies in the north of Jiangxi Province, China and is known as China’s second     2     (large) lake. People in China also call it “the most beautiful road under the water.”

For the next few months, this road is not above the surface    7    under the water. When the water level of Poyang Lake starts to go up, the road surface becomes unseen. However, drivers can still drive across the lake safely     8     watching the guardrails(防撞护栏) fixed on either side of the road. The Tianshan Tuomuer Grand Canyon is about 25 kilometers long from east to west and 20 kilometers wide from north to south. It consists of three main     1     (valley) in the shape of the Chinese character “川”.     2     (situate) in the northwest of Xinjiang at the foot of Tuomur Peak, it is also known     3     “Kuduluk Grand Canyon”,     4     means “thrilling and mysterious” in Uygur (维吾尔语). It is the only way to the ancient post road in the northern and southern Tianshan Mountains.

On June 21, 2013, the Tianshan Mountains in Xinjiang     5     (list) as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. The area in which the Tuomur Grand Canyon lies is the     6     (large) among the four places in the Tianshan Mountains,     7     (account) for 59.87 percent of the whole site.

With its red canyons set against the snow-capped mountains in the distance, the dreamlike landscape     8     (complete) makes visitors lost in the beautiful and impressive view of nature.
