One day in 2001, when I was eight years old, my family and I were coming back from a baseball game, which was our usual weekend adventure. But unlike other weekends, a surprise was waiting for us. Two adult wild geese and a small wild goose were wandering around our yard. The adults were frightened by us and flew away, but their baby was still too young to fly and couldn't follow.

It was freezing cold when night fell. Concerned about the wild goose's safety, we begged dad to protect the little guy. Dad took the tiny little thing to the back porch (门廊) to keep warm and protect him from wild animals. The small wild goose seemed in a panic, unaware of what could happen. The next morning, we try to drive the wild goose over to his parents, who kept coming back to our yard. He wouldn't go to them, and they wouldn't come close to take him. We kept this up for six days, but no luck. By then, the young wild goose had clearly decided we were his new family. My sister Anna called the little guy Peeper, because he would follow us around the yard making a peeping noise, nonstop. Every time we called his name, he would respond. We also decided that Peeper was a boy, I don’t know why; it just felt right.

Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months until almost a year passed. Peeper liked to sleep on our back porch each night, and every day my dad would clean up all the goose droppings (鸟兽的粪便) carefully. Dad would throw Peeper up into the air so he could fly a circle around the house, coming back again once the porch was clean.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Even before I reached the tent, I knew there would be trouble. My little brother Andy was following me, with a sleeping bag, a flashlight, and his stuffed bear. My friends Wade and Bred think Andy would ruin everything. He would get scared in the middle of the night and have to be taken back to the house. They complained so much you'd think they were hospital patients instead of kids I'd invited for an outdoor sleepover.

Andy promised that he wouldn't ruin anything. He wormed his way into the tent and settled in the far corner. Night was settling in, too, with the woods around us fading toward black. The house, with its porch light, seemed a long way from us.

“Time for ghost stories!” Brad announced as soon as I'd closed the tent. He told a   story about vampires (吸血鬼), but it only made us fall over laughing. When it was Wade's turn, he told a story of three guys who were camping in a tent. He described our situation exactly-except for Andy. When he was describing a terrifying creature, somewhere outside, a branch snapped (发出咔嚓声)。The hairs on my arms shot straight up. “These guys were crawling into their sleeping bags, right?” Wade continued. “When out of the darkness rang this terrible cry.” And out of the woods behind us there was a cry! High-pitched, frightening, and strange. The hairs on my head shot straight up!

“What was that?” Bred asked as the cry came again. We all looked at each other in horror, speechless. Wade suggested someone should go out to check, but no one dared. “What if it's something trapped or hurt?” Andy said anxiously. We focused our flashlights on Andy, whom we'd forgotten, sitting in the corner with his arms around his bear. Andy would adopt every lost or hurt animal in the world if Mom would let him.

3 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

When I was 19, I spent part of my summer at an adventure camp on Vancouver Island, supervising (照料) a group of 10-year-old girls. Towards the end of the first week, I took them on a camping. By six in the evening, we’d climbed a small mountain. The peak had trees on one side and bald rock on the other. I let the girls play in the wooded area while I arranged things for dinner.

When the screaming started, I wasn’t too alarmed-I could see my group tearing through the bush and thought they’d just disturbed a bees’ nest. As the first girl appeared, I asked what was going on. “Wildcat!” she gasped. The image in my head was of a house cat gone wild, but with her next breath she added, “It’s attacking Alyson.” I told the girls to climb on to the rocks and then ran to where they’d been playing. Alyson was lying by bush. She was on her back, eyes wide, staring at a huge cat beside her. The cat was watching me.

Anyone familiar with westerns will have seen a cougar (美洲狮) — the mountain lion that springs from the rock face on to the passerby. We’d been told how to deal with bears: “Keep still, back up, make yourself look big.” But we hadn’t covered cougars. I grabbed a stick and swung it into the animal’s face. Startled, it took off into the bushes.

Seeing that Alyson was hurt, I set off for the first-aid box, but hadn’t gone four steps when I heard a moan. Turning back, I saw the cougar crouched (蹲伏) by Alyson’s head. It appeared to be eating her. This time I used a bigger stick, hit harder and held on. Once again, it disappeared, and I knelt by Alyson.

“There’s no way someone can live through this,” I thought. The cat had torn deep into her neck. She had long cuts on her face. “Am I going to die?” she asked. Her heartbeat was racing but weak, the sign of a heart trembling from shock.

Ben was awakened by a gunshot. The sharp noise came through the thick stonewalls of the house. It was cold in the bedroom and Ben was shaking as he got out of bed. He put on his eyeglasses and went over to the window. The field was covered with white frost, Nothing moved out there in the deep quiet just before sunrise.

Ben wondered where the shot had come from. He thought perhaps he had dreamed he heard a gunshot. He looked out toward the frozen lake. Near the trees he saw a shining piece of metal. When it moved, Ben saw that it was a long gun. A minute later a man came out of the woods. He wore hunting clothes. Suddenly a bird flew upward. The man quickly put the gun to his shoulder and shot. Ben watched the bird, praying it had not been hurt. It flew near the ground and went into some tall grass. Safe, Ben thought.

The hunter did not move for a moment, and then he began to follow the bird. Hate for the hunter burned inside of Ben. "Hey!”he shouted .His voice cut through the stillness. The hunter stopped, but then continued to follow the bird. Ben shouted again, but this time the hunter did not stop and Ben started to move toward him. The hunter looked back at Ben. Ben had just bought this house in the woods. He wanted to protect everything on his land. He thought that everyone would obey the signs:"No Hunting.”

However, he heard another gunshot. This troubled him deeply. How could he stop this hunter? He walked toward the lake. He did not want to fight, but the man must go. He walked quietly. He wanted to surprise the hunter. But then, what would he do? He could not fight the hunter.

5 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

When I worked as a nurse, I was on day duty and while my friends were on night duty. On one shift, I remember I sensed something just before going off duty at 11am. I had brought the ward sister her morning tea, so I put down the tea tray. The tray rattled and fell through the window. At first I thought I had accidentally knocked it over, but then I felt the whole building shook and patients screamed.

I realized that we were in the grips of a tremendous earthquake. I caught hold of a nearby patient, who was terribly frightened by it. I pushed her under the bed and held the bed in place while I got under it myself. I then pulled a blanket down between us. As soon as it settled, I decided to try and get the patient safely outside, I carried her out and helped her down to the lawn, where several other people now had gathered.

I knew the ward sister was with another patient, so I went back inside the building. When I reached the ward sister, I found her patient couldn’t walk. We made a seat for her by linking our hands and arms, and carried her outside together. We went back through the building to check no one was left behind. Almost all of the patients had been able to get themselves out of our ward, as far as I knew.

Once our ward was cleared, a doctor called for volunteers to go down to the isolation ward with him to help more people. Another nurse and I went down there. The first thing we saw was a bath in the hallway, We came to the ruined ward. The doctor went in ahead of us through the remains of what had been a doorway. He found one of the nurses partially covered with rubble (碎石). She was still alive so we began to clear the rubble away. Suddenly the aftershock struck. The doctor ordered us to leave. This brave man intended to stay with the trapped nurse and risk his own life.

6 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

“Good news,” Mom said, with a bright smile on her face. "The Parker family wants Surfer. They'll be here in an hour to take him home. ” Surfer had been with us for two days. While I was sad at the thought of seeing him go, I knew I couldn't keep him.

My family operate a foster home(收养所)for pets. Surfer had been in an animal shelter, and he was sent to us so we could place him with a loving family. Surfer was a cute puppy, so finding a home for him had been very easy. Dad entered Surfer's information into a pet adoption website, along with some photos, and within a few hours, the Parkers applied to adopt him. Mom looked over their application, and they seemed like responsible people, so she called them.

However, not every dog was so lucky. Zooey was nine years old, and she'd been with us for a few months. It seemed like nobody wanted to adopt an older dog. Dad said that was a shame because older dogs made wonderful companions. Zooey's previous owner had treated her terribly, and when she was sent to us she was injured. I remember how angry Dad seemed at the time. "No dog should be treated like that,“ he said.

When Zooey came to us, she was upset around everyone. She barked at our two dogs as if in defense and backed away when I tried to approach her. But with our considerate care, it wasn't long before Zooey trusted us. I took her on walks around the neighborhood and got her used to other people and dogs. She took a real liking to Surfer. In fact, they often curled together as they napped(打盹).

The Parkers soon arrived, and we all went into the backyard so they could meet with Surfer. Zooey followed us out, her tail wagging lazily, as Surfer rolled in the grass with the two Parker children.

7 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完事的故事。

“A guide dog could be your eyes,” a friend said to me. Was he joking? Over several years, family and friends watched while an eye disease robbed me of my sight. My blindness added to the problem of not wanting a dog near me. “Dogs scare me,” I told my friend. My hands turned to ice if a dog ran over to greet me. But as my world shrank, I sought a solution. Staying active ranked high on my list. So that suggestion from my friend came into my soul. I applied to the guide dog school.

When I arrived at the school, I was greeted by several staff members. One of them was the dog trainer. “Call me Mr. O,” he said. Sitting across the table from Mr. O, I said without a second thought, “I’m afraid of dogs.” He was silent for a moment, but then found a way to work with my problem. “You don’t have to bond with every dog you meet, just one,” he advised.

Day two of the training, the trainer pushed a leather chain into my hand. “Meet Misty. She’s a fifty-pound female German Shepherd (牧羊犬).” My weak knees betrayed (背叛) my smile. Her large size probably guaranteed that she had large teeth to match. “Don’t you want to look her over?” All I knew was that I didn’t want to touch her mouth. Misty sniffed me, so she surely picked up on my fear. Then, Mr. O smiled and suggested, “Go back to your room and get to know her.”

The first night Misty slept in my school room, I had a small victory but not the way I’d hoped. I was so exhausted that I stretched out on the bed, fully dressed. Rolling over on my left side, I felt Misty’s warm breath on my face. She must have looked like a defender, standing guard over me. Covering my head with a pillow, I made a barrier. My blindness kept me from seeing those sharp, pointed teeth. The next morning, as I stepped out of the room, I just wanted this severe experience to be over.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When a tornado(龙卷风) touched down in a small town nearby, many families were left completed ruined. Afterward all the local newspapers carried many human-interest stories featuring some of the families who suffered the hardest.

One Sunday, a particular picture especially touched me. A young woman stood in front of an entirely shattered(破碎的) mobile home, a depressed expression on her face. A young boy, seven or eight years old, stood at her side, eyes downward. Clutching(紧握) at her skirt was a tiny girl who stared into the camera, eyes wide with confusion and fear.

The article that went with the picture gave the clothing sizes of each family member. With growing interest, I noticed that their sizes closely matched ours. This would be a good opportunity to teach my children to help those less fortunate than themselves. I stuck the picture of the young family on our refrigerator, explaining their difficulty to my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and to three-year-old Meghan.

“These poor people now have nothing,” I said. “We’ll share what we have with them. I brought three large boxes down from the room upstairs and placed them on the living room floor. Meghan watched seriously, as the boys and I filled one of the boxes with canned goods and foods.

While I sorted through our clothes, I encouraged the boys to go through their toys and donate some of their less favorite things. Meghan watched quietly as the boys piled up old toys and games.

Meghan walked up with Lucy, her worn, much-loved rag doll hugged tightly to her chest. She came to the box that held the toys, pressed her round little face into Lucy's flat, painted-on-face, gave her a final kiss, then laid her gently on top of the other toys.

“Oh, Honey,” I said.” You don’t have to give Lucy. You love her so much.”

Meghan nodded seriously, eyes filled with held-back tears. "Lucy makes me happy, Mommy. Maybe she’ll make that other little girl happy, too.”

Paragraph. 1:

The boys had watched,open-mouthed,as their baby sister placed her favorite doll in the box.

9 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

60-year-old Richard Olsen had retired from his work. He was very interested in adventure and hunting. This time he hunted on a sparsely(稀少地)populated land. In the cold winter, he tried a new place and forgot to bring his cell phone, the only time on the trip. He trekked(艰苦跋涉)more than half a mile with two dogs to a harvested wheat field.

Eyes fixed on the horizon in expectation of another rabbit, Richard stepped on the thin snow on a canal(沟渠). Suddenly, the snow collapsed(坍塌)and he dropped four feet to the bottom.

Trapped in the canal, Richard couldn't move at all, his left leg badly hurt. Using his shotgun as a crutch(拐杖), he spent an hour and a half climbing the canal but slipped and slid back down when he was partly up. This time, one of his feet got stuck between two rocks. Richard told himself that if he didn't get himself out of that canal, he wasn't going to have a very good night.

Richard worked his foot free and climbed more slowly and cautiously out of the canal. Richard immediately realized the difficulty of the task before him. The accident occurred about 2 p.m., and it was nearing 5 p.m. with the road far away as the sun was setting.

Richard focused on crawling(爬)to safety. Even with his gun supporting him, hopping(单足跳跃)was impractical. Instead, he sat down and pushed himself backward less than 40 inches at a time with his good leg. He was determined and sure that he must hold on. He was tired out and had more frequent breaks. Temperatures dropped overnight, and snow melted and his gloves and boots got wet. His hands and feet soon were completely numb(失去知觉的).

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Tom Satre owned a boat. One day,he was enjoying the weekend with his family. Tom s daughter Anna was looking around as the family was traveling across the water. Then she saw something strange from afar. They eventually got close enough to figure out what it was. At first, they thought that it was a group of birds or may he even some sea lions. Their theories were all wrong! They were able to see ears. As they approached, they realized that it was actually a group of deer struggling to stay afloat!

Everyone on the boat was surprised to find four Sitka deer approaching their way. They stilled the boat and the four deer swam nearer and nearer. They swam right towards the boat—then, they started to circle the boat. They were looking up and looked like they needed help.

They were in Alaska. It should go without saying that the deer had to be taken out of the freezing waters. Tom said that these were the most upset deer he had ever seen in his life. The deer were exhausted and they were clearly struggling to stay afloat. However, Tom and the others were unsure how they could get the deer on board the boat.

As an outdoorsman, Tom was able to tell that the animals were young because their antlers (鹿角)were not fully developed yet. He came up with a plan and attached rope to their necks and everyone on the boat had to pull up the deer so that they can come on board. Those poor deer! Wild deer are normally easily frightened and cautious in the presence of humans. Not these deer, however, as they climbed the boat immediately. Once aboard, the creatures simply passed out from exhaustion. They couldn't stand up on their own... they couldn't shake the water off their coats. The family dicing want to touch them, but it was clear that the deer were happy to be there. They probably would have crawled (爬) on board if they could have.
