As that heat rises, some of it is     1     by gases in the atmosphere and reflected back towards the planet’s     2    . Like the glass in a greenhouse     3     holds heat inside the building, gases in the air hold in heat around Earth. Scientists call this global heat-trapping     4     the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect keeps the temperature of our planet’s surface comfortably warm.

Several gases in the atmosphere     5     to global warming. The one you’ve     6     heard the most about is carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is a good heat-trapping gas—a greenhouse gas,     7     scientists say.     8     certain amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is     9    . 2 . 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

New Yorkers were shocked in early December when a creature as big as a school bus     1     (surface) from the Hudson River. Over the next three days,    2     humpback whale (座头鲸) swam by several popular tourist destinations, where a journalist took    3    (photo) of the animal seemingly waving its tail at Lady Liberty.

Scientists say NYC0089, which hasn't been spotted in several weeks, has likely returned to deeper waters south of the Hudson. Still, the     4    (frequent) of whale sightings in the broader area has gone up rapidly in recent years.

“With these numbers increasing     5     (sharp), it's not surprising that you're seeing them in some unusual places,” says Brown — a biologist. Including the Hudson River and Staten Island.

Scientists say the     6    (rise) whale sightings are likely related to purer water and a brimming buffet of Atlantic menhaden, a fish favored by humpbacks, resulting     7     landmark environmental regulations     8    (pass) in the 1970s as well as New York city cleanup efforts.

“Seeing more whales in this area is a sign    9     the waters are cleaner and there's more food here for these whales,” Brown says. “It shows     10     we've been doing is working, so we need to keep doing that — and more — to protect these species.”

3 . Lego is considering a brick rental plan in an attempt to cut down on plastic waste. The Danish toymaker has promised to make all its bricks from sustainable sources by 2030 and is investing significant resources into finding alternatives.

Tim Brooks, vice-president responsible for sustainability, said the company was “totally open” to the idea of a product rental plan but admitted that lost pieces could produce a significant problem. He said the rental scheme was "possible" but admitted there were some "technical barriers", one of which is the complexity of some Lego sets, many of which contain thousands of pieces. "What are the chances of giving them to an eight-year-old child and getting them all back again?" Mr Brooks added.

Lego has come under increasing pressure to reduce its carbon footprint among growing international alarm about the impact of plastic waste on the environment. Lego reportedly gives off around a million tons of carbon dioxide each year, with about three-quarters coming from raw materials that go into factories. It produces 19 billion pieces per year—36,000 a minute—that are made of plastic and much of the inner packaging is also plastic.

So far, the only breakthrough has been the development of a line of bricks made from plant-based plastic sourced from sugarcane. The green trees, plants and flowers were first included in Lego sets late last year but account for only one-two percent of the total amount of plastic elements produced.

Henrik Ostergaard Nielson, a production administrator in Lego's factory, told the New York Times last year, “We need to learn again how to do this. The company has invested more than €100, 000,000 and hired 100 people to research non-plastic alternatives. It is aiming to keep all of its packaging reusable by 2025.”

1. What is the aim of Lego’s brick rental plan?
A.To cut down on its costs.B.To reduce plastic waste.
C.To seek alternative resources.D.To deal with technical barriers.
2. What is Tim Brooks' attitude towards the toy rental scheme?
A.Negative.B.Confident.C.Ambiguous.D.Objective.
3. What method is mainly used in the last three paragraphs?
A.Listing figuresB.Making comparisonsC.Giving examplesD.Giving definition
4. What can we know from the last paragraphs?
A.Lego will not make new products after 2025.B.Lego has already bought non-plastic alternatives.
C.Lego is making efforts for eco-friendly productsD.Lego's green technology is relatively backward.

5 . Stages of Hurricane: Simple Storms Grow Into Giants

A storm progresses through four different stages before it is actually considered a hurricane. First is a tropical disturbance (热带扰动), which has thunderstorms and rotating winds. Next is a tropical depression (热带低压), which is similar to a tropical disturbance, but has winds between 23 and 39 miles per hour. A tropical storm is the next level, which has stronger wind speeds between 40 and 73 miles per hour. Once winds reach 74 miles per hour the storm is officially called a hurricane. The wind picks up energy from the warm surface of ocean water.

As a hurricane crosses over land, it begins to become weaker or break apart and reduce in strength. This is because it is no longer over the warm ocean water that it needs for energy. At this point, a hurricane can still cause a lot of damage because of high winds, rain, and flooding. But unless it makes its way back over the open ocean, it is downgraded from a hurricane back to a tropical storm.

What's Your Name, Hurricane? Hurricanes and tropical storms are given names to help people recognize them. Scientists refer to hurricanes and storms by name as they track them across the ocean.

Before 1953, hurricanes were not given official names. From 1953 through 1978, hurricanes were only given female names, like Isabel, Camille, Claudette, and Wilma. Beginning in 1979, hurricanes were given the names of both women and men. Today, the names alternate male and female, and they are named in order of letters.

For example, in 2010, storms were named as follows: Alex (male), Bonnie (female), Colin(male), Danielle (female), Earl (male) and so on....

There are six different lists of names that change, so the same names are used every six years. The only way that a new name is added is when a hurricane has been particularly deadly or costly and the name is retired, then replaced with a new one.

1. Which of the following is the right order of stages of a hurricane?
A.Tropical depression, tropical disturbance, tropical storm, hurricane.
B.Tropical disturbance, tropical depression, tropical storm, hurricane.
C.Tropical storm, tropical depression, tropical disturbance, hurricane.
D.tropical storm, tropical disturbance, tropical depression, hurricane.
2. What happens when a hurricane crosses over land?
A.It breaks apart and forms tornadoes.
B.It returns to the ocean afterwards.
C.It moves more quickly.
D.It becomes less powerful.
3. The underlined word “alternate” in Paragraph 4 means “________”.
A.take turns betweenB.carry on
C.come fromD.cause trouble to
4. What do we know about the hurricane?
A.Six common hurricane names are often used.
B.An old name will be replaced every year.
C.Most of them are deadly and costly.
D.They didn’t have official names until 1953.

6 . A handful of old mobile phones lay in a grey bucket. These outdated devices, which are about to be chopped into thousands of pieces, will be given a second life as recycled e-waste. But many phones won't.

According to the latest estimates, the world gets rid of approximately 50 million tonnes of waste annually. E-waste is full of dangerous materials that can cause damage to human health and the environment if not managed properly. But only 20 percent of global e-waste is recycled. The rest ends up in landfill, or burned—or is not recycled at all.

And yet,Switzerland is a good example of how to deal with the growing environmental issue. The country collects and recycles roughly 7S percent of this discarded material. This is thanks to a strong voluntary take-back system, where consumers can take e-waste to a reclining collection point or any electronic shop retailer(零售商). A recycling station can be found within at most 300 meters from any residential area. Everyone gets involved. Switzerland's e-waste system is unique and can't be easily copied-due to a strong recycling culture within the country.

However, Switzerland faces the same global challenges as every nation. The built-in lithium batteries(锂电池)aren't easy to take out. The only way to remove these potentially dangerous components is with a bar and hammer. This poses a significant risk to those handling the goods. As such, producers need to be more transparent(信息透明的) and show more clearly where the harmful substances are, and how they can be removed.

Once the battery is removed, e-waste is sorted into different component parts—-metals, plastics and other materials. Roughly 70 percent of the device can be recycled. The material that cannot be recycled is used for other purposes like construction material or is burned to generate energy. Mobile phones—from a material perspective (角度), from a value perspective, and also from an environmental impact perspective -are very important.

For the past 15 years, Switzerland has been actively encouraging and supporting electrical waste disposal practices. They are happy to share their knowledge, experience, lessons learned, and they are happy if other people pick up on it.

1. What can we know about the global e-waste?
A.Only 20% of the e-waste is useful.
B.It is becoming an environmental problem.
C.Most of it has been given a second life.
D.It has been the major cause of pollution.
2. what can we inferred about the"take-back"system in Switzerland?
A.It is unique and easy to copy.
B.It features many devoted volunteers.
C.It gains great support and understanding.
D.It is complicated and not easily accessible.
3. To help recycle e-waste, what are mobile phone producers advised to do?
A.Remove harmful substances.
B.Use less dangerous components.
C.Offer customers free bars and hammers.
D.Help make the removal easier and safer.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.How to fight against e-waste.
B.Why E-waste gets out of control.
C.How to be champion of recycling.
D.How to lead an Eco-friendly lifestyle.

8 . Animals are natural resources that people have wasted all through our history.

Animals have been killed for their fur and feathers, for food, for sport, and simply because they were in the way. Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the earth forever. Hundreds more are on the danger list today. About 170 kinds in the United States alone are considered in danger. Why should people care? Because we need animals. And because once they are gone, there will never be any more.

Animals are more than beautiful or interesting or a source of food. Every animal has its place in the balance of nature. Destroying one kind of animal can create many problems.

For example, when farmers killed large numbers of hawks, the farmers' stores of corn and grain were destroyed by mice. Why? Because hawks eat mice. With no hawks to keep down their numbers, the mice multiplied quickly.

Luckily, some people are working to help save the animals. Some groups raise money to let people know about the problem. And they try to get the governments to pass laws protecting animals in danger.

Quite a few countries have passed laws. These laws forbid the killing of any animal or plant on the danger list. However, only if everyone takes action, animals can be removed from the endangered list.

1. What is the theme for the text?
A.Save the animals.B.Useful animals.C.Laws for animals.D.Animals in danger.
2. Why are animals important for us?
A.They give us a source of food.B.They are beautiful and lovely.
C.They keep the balance of nature.D.They give us a lot of pleasure.
3. What does the underlined word "more" in Para. 2 refer to?

9 . Oceans hold a lot of mystery, even for people who study them. But it’s no mystery why they’re in trouble. We’ve been using them to hide our waste, such as pouring oil, plastic, and poisonous chemicals into them for decades. We’ve over exploited (剥削) many fish stocks to levels so low that they can no longer be harvested.

Oceans are also a primary source of protein for millions of people worldwide. If we want to continue to enjoy what oceans provide, we need to do everything we can to protect them and the life they support. We should ensure the seafood we eat is sustainable.

Of course, not everyone is lucky enough to be able to catch their own fish, which means having sustainable options at the store is critical. As public and companies awareness about the risks caused by overfishing and uncontrolled sea farming expansion has grown, food tradesmen in Canada have developed sustainable seafood policies and commitments.

Seafood Progress, an online resource, is designed to help provide rewards to tradesmen and information to seafood lovers. It makes it easier for consumers in Canada to find out tradesmen’s policies on sourcing sustainable seafood, whether they’re sticking to those policies and how they’re performing compared to their peers.

But tradesmen must do more to ensure their seafood products are environmentally sustainable and socially responsible. This means expanding the scope of their commitments to cover all seafood products they sell, in all their stores. It also requires continuing to work with suppliers and producers to improve practices and make sure the sustainable seafood supply meets consumer demand.

It’s no mystery that if we want to continue to eat fish, we must do it responsibly. Seafood Progress has invited seafood tradesmen, suppliers and consumers to join in pushing to this goal.

1. What’s the cause of oceans’ being in trouble according to paragraph 1?
A.The ever-changing of the global climate.
B.The mystery that people haven’t studied.
C.The over exploitation and use of the oceans.
D.The continuous decrease of fish stocks.
2. What can Seafood Progress do for consumers?
A.Provide rewards to them.
B.Urge them to stick to policies.
C.Provide them with enough seafood.
D.Let them know about tradesmen’s policies.
3. What can we infer from the passage?
A.Millions of people rely on oceans for protein.
B.People fail to note the consequence of overfishing.
C.Seafood Progress helps American customers to be informed about tradesmen’s policies.
D.Tradesmen can sell seafood products without limit.
4. How can seafood be sustainable?
A.Through expanding seafood production.
B.By protecting all the tradesmen’s profit.
C.By making policies to control seafood consumers.
D.By joint efforts of people involved in seafood.

10 . The LEGO Group, whose plastic building toys are familiar to many people, has been working on making LEGO bricks out of recycled plastic. The bricks aren't ready yet, but the company says it's making progress.

Since roughly 1960, LEGO bricks have been made from ABS plastic which makes LEGO bricks very tough and gives them great clutch power so that the things users build don't fall apart easily. Sadly, ABS plastic can't really be recycled and it takes an extremely long time to break down.

However, since 2015, LEGO has been trying to make earth-friendly products. Making bricks from recycled materials could cut pollution from the company's bricks by 70%. But making bricks out of recycled plastic is challenging. The goal is to make bricks out of PET plastic, which is softer than ABS plastic and can be found in things like bottles and clothing. A recycled one-liter plastic bottle could make about ten 2×4 LEGO bricks. Over the past three years, the company has tested over 250 different ways of creating LEGO bricks from recycled plastic. A team of more than 150 people are working on the problem. Tim Brooks, who focuses on environmental responsibility at LEGO, says that experimenting and failing is “an important part of learning”.

Now, the company says they can make a good 2×4 brick from PET. One important step was finding a way of adding things to PET plastic to make it tougher and give it better clutch power like ABS. They will also work on shaping bricks into other forms and adding color to them-right now they are just white. The bricks will go through many different tests, which will take at least a year.

The company aims to make all their main products out of sustainable materials by the year 2030. “We know kids care about the environment and we want to tell them we're working on it.” said Mr. Brooks.

1. Which of the following can best describe LEGO bricks made from ABS plastic?
A.Strong and firm.
B.Recyclable and soft.
C.Cheap and familiar.
D.Popular and new.
2. Why is LEGO working on making PET plastic bricks?
A.Because the company wants to show that it's making progress.
B.Because this has always been LEGO's goal since its foundation.
C.Because using PET plastic bricks can reduce pollution to the earth.
D.Because PET plastic bricks are much softer and cheaper.
3. What can we learn about making PET plastic bricks?
A.LEGO has found a way to make colorful PET plastic bricks.
B.It's not necessary to put things into PET plastic to make it tough.
C.A lot of tests have been carried out and there will be more tests.
D.Children keep asking the company to replace ABS plastic bricks.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.LEGO becomes a leading toy company
B.LEGO works to make bricks from recycled plastic
C.LEGO recycles plastic toy bricks to protect the environment
D.LEGO makes the best of ABS plastic to reduce cost
