1 . With the electronics industry developing, electronic products have become ubiquitous (无处不在的)in today’s life. Meanwhile, there are more and more abandoned electronic products, commonly called e-waste. It’s estimated that the number will grow to more than 60 million tons by 2021.

What contributes to the sharp rise in e-waste? Technology is developing rapidly, covering almost every aspect of our lives. Meanwhile, the lifespan of devices is getting shorter—many products will be thrown away once their batteries die. Companies intentionally plan the obsolescence (淘汰)of their goods by updating the design or software and discontinuing support for older models, so that it is usually cheaper and easier to buy a new product than to repair an old one.

What can we do about the growing e-waste problem? Recycling is very important and essential. As more people buy electronic equipment, producers are facing shortages of the raw materials, needed to make their products, so recycling and reusing e-waste makes economic and environmental sense.

Recycling e-waste is practiced both formally and informally. Formal e-waste recycling usually involves taking apart the electronics, sorting the materials and cleaning them. Companies must obey health and safety rules to reduce the health and environmental harm of handling e-waste by using: pollution-control technologies. All this makes formal recycling expensive. Informal recycling is typically, unlicensed and uncontrolled. At informal recycling workshops, people recover valuable materials burning devices to melt away non-valuable materials. Usually they do not wear protective equipment and lack any awareness that they are handling dangerous materials.

With the flood of e-waste growing around the world, recycling alone will not be enough to solve the problem. In order to reduce e-waste, producers need to design electronics that are safer, and more long-lasting, repairable and recyclable. The best thing we can do is to resist buying a new device until we really need it. Try to get our old product repaired if possible and, if it can't be fixed, resell or recycle it responsibly and correctly.

1. What is the main idea of paragraph 2?
A.The causes of devices' price dropping.
B.The results of updating devices.
C.The methods of recycling e-waste.

A.To improve the poor quality of e-devices.
B.To lower the costs of technology innovation.
C.To relieve producers’ lack of materials.
D.To increase the variety of electronic products.
3. What can we know about formal recycling workshops?
A.There are many rules and steps to follow.
B.They aim to get valuable materials by burning devices.
C.It is convenient for them to recycle e-waste.
D.They are unaware of the danger while handling e-waste.
4. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.E-waste is easy to deal with by ourselves.
B.Producers should be mainly responsible for reducing e-waste.
C.Everyone should shoulder responsibility to help reduce e-waste.
D.Fixing a device could cause more pollution than buying a new one.

2 . A new study has found that ride-sharing services result in much more pollution than other kinds of private and public transportation. Ride-sharing trips also draw passengers away from more environment friendly methods of travel, like public transportation, walking or biking, the study found.

Several studies in recent years have suggested that ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft can worsen traffic problems in cities. The new study represents an attempt to center on how ride-sharing services affect pollution.

Overall, the researchers reported that ride-sharing trips now "result in a 69 percent more climate pollution on average than the trips they replace." The study notes that the same passengers could have chosen to travel by bus, train, bike or on foot.

One of the big reasons they give for this result is that ride-sharing vehicles are often driven with no passengers in the car. This happens when drivers are either waiting for rider requests, are on the way to pick up passengers. This situation, known as "deadheading," takes up about 42 percent of all ride-sharing driving activity, the study found. The researchers said that deadheading results in about 50 percent more carbon dioxide than one person driving in a private vehicle.

Both Uber and Lyft have said in the past that most studies on the subject overstate (夸大)the effects of their services on pollution. Uber told Reuters news agency in a statement it had no comment on the latest report and that the study made misleading claims about ride-sharing. Meanwhile, the company said it would work directly with cities to address climate changes, promoting sharing trips and other means of transportation.

1. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?
A.Ride-sharing becomes a new trend that can’t be avoided.
B.Ride-sharing industry is met with criticism.
C.Ride-sharing services increase pollution.
D.Ride-sharing services need improvement.
2. The term “deadheading” in the passage refers to ________.
A.a driving process where the driver is not carrying passengers
B.a potential risk that the driver may lose control of the vehicle
C.a period of driving hours when vehicles produce more carbon dioxide
D.a situation in which a driver has too many passengers to pick up
3. In the eyes of Uber, the latest report is actually________.
A.barking up the wrong treeB.not seeking the truth from facts
C.killing two birds with one stoneD.beating around the bush
4. From the study of ride-sharing services, we can infer that ________.
A.Ride-sharing attracts exactly the same number of people as traditional means of transport.
B.the study was conducted to prove the influence of ride-sharing services on modern cities
C.ride-sharing service is not an environmentally friendly way to travel
D.the new report has forced Uber to make big changes to achieve its goal

3 . Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work with zoo or aquarium animals? Kylene, an animal care specialist from Sea World San Diego, who cared for the African penguins at SeaWorld for many years.

Over the past several years, the South African penguins have been on the decrease in numbers. A hundred years ago, there were about 1 million African penguins, but since then their population has decreased to under 100 ,000. Scientists predict the population could fall as low as 50 ,000 over the next 20 years if we don't do anything.

Some scientists think the changing ocean temperatures have caused the penguins1 food supply to disappear. Humans have also disturbed the penguins ' wild habitat and collected their eggs. And humans have also been collecting guano (the waste passed from the sea birds' bodies) , which can be added to the soil to make plants grow more successfully. As a result, humans damage their natural nest-digging sites. Without the piles of guano the penguins used to build their nests, they've been forced to nest on open ground.

Some other scientists think the slight increase in air temperature on the islands has had an impact on the penguins' success rate of hatching their eggs. No matter what the reason is, South African penguin population is falling, and scientists need to find a way to stop the decline.

Working with other zoos in the country, Kylene did what she could to help protect the South African penguins. Through Kylene's efforts and the efforts of the people like her at many penguin conservation organizations in South Africa, these little penguins have a chance for a better tomorrow.

1. What has happened to the South African penguins over the past years?
A.The penguin population has greatly declined.
B.They've begun to lose the habitat completely.
C.They have done great harm to the natural environment.
D.They have been hunted by humans for money-making.
2. What does the third paragraph mainly about?
A.The importance of penguins' return.B.The causes of penguins' decrease.
C.The efforts of some scientists.D.the necessity of penguins' existence.
3. What is guano used for by humans?
A.The food supply.B.The building materials.
C.The good shelter.D.The farming fertilizer.
4. What is the author's attitude towards the future of the South African penguins?
A.Worried.B.Doubtful.C.Hopeful.D.Uncertain.

4 . The world has a water problem which is simple to understand but not to solve. The amount of water in the world is limited. Water usage in the world has increased during the past 10 years. Usages will continue to increase as the population grows and uses more water. A third of the world’s population lives in countries that have too little water.     1

It’s strange to think that there is more than enough water available for everyone’s basic needs.     2     Some countries are much drier than others, for example Sudan in Africa. The UN says that people need a minimum of 50 litres of water a day for drinking, washing, cooking and sanitation(卫生). In 1990, over a billion people did not have even that .     3     Water shortages can mean long walks to get water, high prices to buy it, food insecurity and disease from drinking dirty water.

Governments that try to improve water supplies need to think carefully about how to do this. Dams and other large projects now affect 60 percent of world’s largest rivers and provide millions with water.     4

5     New technology can help, especially by cleaning up pollution and so making more water usable, and in agriculture, where water use can be made far more efficient. For millions of people around the world, solving the problem is a matter of life and death.

A.So what can help?
B.The rest along major rivers in the world have no worry about water.
C.Unfortunately, it’s poor people who suffer most.
D.By 2025, scientists expect this to increase to two-thirds.
E.It’s just not spread evenly throughout the world.
F.Meanwhile, electricity from these dams can provide people with clean energy.
G.But in many cases, homes and the environment are destroyed as a result.

8 .     1       However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your sport of choice might have great influence on the environment.

Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses(球场)in good condition.     2     For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas.

3     Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don’t need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don't have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit.     4     Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.

Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms”. They are better replacements(代替物)for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces.     5     And best of all, it’s free.

A.It will cost you a lot.
B.This causes major environmental effects.
C.There are many environment-friendly sports.
D.Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature.
E.If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones.
F.There is no special requirement for you to start your membership.
G.More and more people are concerned about environmental protection.

9 . Many cities and towns have laws that require people to recycle paper and plastics. Now some state and local governments have passed laws that require citizens to recycle their food waste as well. California and Vermont have statewide laws about recycling food waste that apply to businesses and homes. The process of recycling food waste and turning it into usable soil is called composting (堆制肥料).

Food waste that can be composted includes fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds, tea bags, and eggshells. Garden waste such as stems and leaves can also be composted. Meat, fish, and dairy food waste cannot be recycled.

According to environmental groups, composting reduces the amount of trash going into landfills, and composted waste holds a wide range of nutrients (营养物). When compost is added to the soil in gardens and fields, it helps crops grow.

Reducing the amount of waste that goes into landfills is one reason why cities and states are passing food-waste recycling laws. “Our landfills are far from enough for the creation of new ones is shrinking.” Renee Crowley, a project manager at the Lower East Side Ecology Center in New York City, told TFK.

Officials in Seattle, Washington, say that food waste makes up 30% of the trash going into landfills, and they are looking to reduce that percentage. That city has a law requiring people to recycle food waste. It is banned from all garbage. There is a fine (罚款) for people who put it into regular garbage.

Those who are against food-recycling laws say that the composting process is costly. In addition, it can be difficult for people who live in apartments to store their waste because they don’t have access to outside storage bins. Patti Ferguson from Orange County, California, told her local newspaper that she thought an indoor container containing food waste would get smelly.

1. What do we know about composting from the text?
A.Leaves can’t be reused.B.Not all food waste can be composted.
C.It is cheap to compost food waste.D.It is usually processed in empty landfills.
2. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.Benefits of recycling food waste.B.Ways of keeping nutrients in the soil.
C.Ways of reducing the amount of trash.D.Examples of different useful nutrients.
3. In Seattle, throwing food waste into garbage is _____.
A.acceptableB.shamefulC.requiredD.illegal
4. What’s Patti Ferguson’s attitude towards food-recycling laws probably?
A.Thankful.B.Negative.C.Uncaring.D.Supportive.

10 . Every day is Earth Day — probably you’ve heard it before. Nearly all Americans have access to a plastic recycling program. You may be surprised to learn how many types of plastic packaging can be recycled into new, useful products!

Ford Motor Company has been helping to promote the use of environmentally-friendly auto parts — and one way they’re doing that is by using recycled plastic bottles for underbody shields (底盘保护罩) and other auto parts on cars.

“The underbody shield is a large part, and for a part that big, if we use solid plastic, it would likely weigh three times as much,” said Thomas Sweder, a design engineer of Ford Motor Company. “We look for the most durable and highest performing materials to work with to make our parts, and in this case, we are also creating many environmental benefits.”

In the past decade, the global use of plastics in vehicle parts has grown quickly. Ford alone uses about 1.2 billion recycled plastic bottles per year, about 250 bottles per vehicle on average.

When plastic bottles are thrown into a recycling bin, they are collected with thousands of others and cut into small pieces. These pieces are typically sold to suppliers who turn them into fibers, by melting and pressing them. Then they are mixed together with other various types of fiber in a process and used to make a sheet of material which is formed into the auto parts.

Due to its light weight, recycled plastic is ideal for the manufacturing of underbody shields. These shields reportedly also help create a significantly quieter environment on the new 2020 Ford Escape.

This is not the only way that Ford has been committed to environmental protection; the automotive company recently partnered with McDonald’s coffee suppliers to recycle all of their coffee roasting biowaste into headlights.

“Ford is among the leaders when it comes to using recycled materials such as this,” Sweder said. “This material meets all of our requirements for durability and performance.”

1. Why does Ford choose recycled plastic as environmentally-friendly materials?
A.Because it’s new and useful.B.Because it’s durable and light.
C.Because it’s cheap and easy to get.D.Because it’s portable and well-performed.
2. What does Paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
A.The global use of plastics.B.The mixing process of fibers.
C.The advantages of plastic bottles.D.The formation of the new auto material.
3. What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 7 refer to?
A.Recycling coffee roasting biowaste.B.Improving vehicle parts.
C.Recycling plastic bottles into auto parts.D.Creating a quieter environment.
4. What can be the best title of the passage?
A.Ford Takes the Lead in Plastic Recycling.
B.Every Day is Earth Day.
C.Ecological Auto Underbody Shields.
D.A Pioneer in Promoting Environmental Protection.
