2 . Traveling to a farm and spending several hours a day getting your hands dirty might sound like an unusual way to spend a vacation.
WWOOF, or “Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms”, is an organization that helps travelers go on “volunteering vacations” on organic farms. The idea is simple: travelers volunteer on farms for around four to six hours a day in exchange for free accommodation and meals. The duration (时长) of “vacation” could be a few days or a few weeks.
Volunteers may be given different tasks, based on the type of farm they’re on. These may include things like gardening, cutting wood, feeding animals, or even making cheese or wine.
But “WWOOFing” is about more than that. The aim is for travelers and farmers to take part in a cultural and educational exchange, while helping people spend time in nature.
At least, that’s what Sue Coppard had in mind when she started the organization. In 1971, Coppard was working as a secretary in London, but she wanted to spend more time in the countryside. So, she thought it might be a good idea to stay and work on a farm. And since she worried that she would be lonely, she asked others to join her. After a successful trial weekend at a farm in Sussex, England, with 15 volunteers, more people started showing interest in working on farms, and more organic farmers said they were willing to host workers.
Today, it’s possible to go WWOOFing in more than 130 countries, according to the website. You don’t need any farming experience—just a positive attitude and a willingness to learn!

4 . Snowboarding athlete Su Yiming left his name in the history books by winning China’s first Olympic gold in the sport on Tuesday to cap his amazing Games debut (首秀).
By cleanly finishing back-to-back 1800 tricks, the teenager landed the biggest prize so far in his young career — gold in the men’s Big Air at the Beijing Winter Olympics.
The achievement realized a childhood dream to reach the peak of the sport, which he began to learn at the age of 4.
Now with two shinning medals, including a slopestyle silver, hung around his neck, the 17-year-old described his superb Olympic debut as a crazy experience that has made all his effort worthwhile.
“This feels so unreal that I’ve finally accomplished what I’ve dreamed of since I was little,” Su said after finishing his third run as a victory lap.
Over the past four years, Su has combined his talent with hard work — under the guidance of famous Japanese coach Yasuhiro Sato — to produce one of the swiftest rises to excellence the sport has ever seen.
When the Shougang Big Air venue hosted its first international event — a World Cup meet in 2019 — Su was an unknown qualifier, who didn’t even make the final runs. Just over two years later, Su is the name on everyone’s lips at the venue’s Olympic debut — drawing the whole nation’s attention to the sport he loves.
“The biggest motivation for me is my love for snowboarding,” Su said, when asked about the secret to his success. “In snowboarding, I feel like I can demonstrate my own style and creativity. Every time I ride my board, it’s always a wonderful moment. I hope through my experience, I can inspire more young people to get interested in the sport.”

After hitting the button of an alarm clock a couple of times, Sarah rushed to get dressed. She had a big presentation at work, and she needed the caffeine more than ever. She grabbed (抓住) her keys, rushed out of the door, and made her way to the familiar coffee shop.
As she joined the line of cars in the drive-through (免下车的餐馆), Sarah couldn’t help but feel the familiar rush of anticipation. The smell of roasted coffee beans and the thought of having a cup of coffee was her little daily enjoyment.
The line of cars went forward slowly, and soon, Sarah found herself at the drive-through window. She reached for her purse to pay, but before she could hand over her credit card, the cashier smiled and said, “Your coffee has been covered by the car ahead of you.” “Really?” she asked, both surprised and grateful. The cashier nodded. “Yes, the woman in the car ahead wanted to pay it forward today. Enjoy your coffee!”
With a warm smile, Sarah accepted the free coffee and drove away. The unexpected act of kindness was in her mind as she drank the delicious coffee. It put a spring in her step and a smile on her face, making her presentation a little less worrying.
As she exited the drive-through, Sarah glanced in her rearview (后视的) mirror at the next car approaching the coffee shop window. An idea began to form in her mind. Maybe she could do the same, pay it forward and brighten someone else’s morning. She decided to stick around, park her car and go back into the coffee shop. She approached the cashier and said, “I’d like to pay for the coffee of the person in the car behind me.” The cashier smiled and nodded, processing the payment. Sarah knew she had just started a chain of kindness, and she felt a warm sense of satisfaction.

Children seem to care so much about their names. A study shows that most young people wish their parents had given them a different name.
Some people choose to change their names when they grow up. Many people in show business don’t use the names their parents gave them. Have you ever listened to Joanne? No? The answer could be “yes” if we call her stage name instead! You may never heard of Margaret. But if we tell you her stage name, you might know her as a famous dancer.
In many cultures, there are special ideas about how to choose a name. For example, many people choose a name that has been in their family for many years. It tells the child where he or she comes from.
Choosing a good name isn’t easy. Many parents search books that tell them the meanings of names. They could choose a name that carries a message. For example, Edith means “valuable gift”. Amanda means “love”. And Fara means “joy”.
Names like these tell family and friends how happy they are with their new baby. Other names can say something about the events during the birth of the child. In Africa, a first born son may have the name Mosi and the name Ama means “born on Saturday”.
Is every boy called Curtis polite? And is every girl called Mahira quick and full of energy? No parents can tell what kind of person their child will grow up to be. Just because parents name a boy Fahim, it doesn’t mean he will be clever. All they can do is hope.

9 . Welcome to your future life!
You get up in the morning and look into the mirror. Your face is firm and young-looking. In 2035, medical technology is better than ever. Many people could live to be 150, so at 40, you’re not old at all. And your parents just had an anti-aging (抗衰老的) treatment. Now, all three of you look the same age!
You say to your shirt, “Turn red.” It changes from blue to red. In 2035, “smart clothes” contain particles (粒子) much smaller than the cells in your body. The particles can be programmed to change clothes’ color or pattern.
You walk into the kitchen. You pick up the milk, but a voice says, “You shouldn’t drink that!” Your fridge has read the chip (芯片) that contains information about the milk, and it knows the milk is old. In 2035, every article of food in the grocery store has such a chip.
It’s time to go to work. In 2035, cars drive themselves. Just tell your “smart car” where to go. On the way, you can call a friend using your jacket sleeve. Such “smart technology” is all around you.
So will all these things come true? “For new technology to succeed,” says scientist Andrew Zolli, “it has to be so much better that it replaces what we have already.” The Internet is one example. What will be the next?
