1 . Save the Animals

Animals are natural resources(资源) that people have wasted all through our history.

Animals have been killed for their fur and feathers(羽毛), for food, for sport, and simply because they were in the way. Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the earth forever. Hundreds more are on the danger list today. About 170 kinds in the United States alone are considered in danger.

Why should people care? Because we need animals. And because once they are gone, there will never be any more.

Animals are more than just beautiful or interesting. They are more than just a source of food. Every animal has its place in the balance (平衡) of nature. Destroying one kind of animal can create many problems.

For example, when farmers killed large numbers of hawks(鹰), the farmers’ stores of corn and grain were destroyed by rats and mice. Why? Because hawks eat rats and mice. With no hawks to keep down their numbers, the rats and mice multiplied(繁殖) quickly.

Luckily, some people are working to help save the animals. Some groups raise money to let people know about the problem. And they try to get the governments to pass laws protecting animals in danger.

Quite a few countries have passed laws. These laws forbid(禁止) the killing of any animal or plant on the danger list. Slowly, the number of some animals in danger is growing.

1. Animals are important to us mainly because ______.
A.they are beautiful and lovely
B.they keep the balance of nature
C.they give us a lot of pleasure
D.they give us a source of food
2. What has happened to the animals on the earth? ______
A.Thousands of kinds of animals are gone forever.
B.A few kinds of animals have died out.
C.All kinds of animals are in danger.
D.About 170 kinds of animals have disappeared forever.
3. Why do people kill animals? ______
A.They kill animals to raise some money.
B.Animals destroy their natural resources.
C.Animals create many problems.
D.They kill animals for something they need.
4. What can we conclude from the fact that quite a few countries have passed laws protecting animals in danger? ______
A.Animals in danger will not be killed any more.
B.The number of some animals in danger will increase.
C.Every person will know the importance of protecting wild animals.
D.Animals in danger will be kept away from people.

2 . 阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。

When Zhang Lingshan was a child, she would watch the Chinese period drama Palace on television, attracted by the characters' ancient clothing. She didn't know what these beautiful clothes     1     (call)-only that they were from some     2     (distance) past. "They looked fairy-like, dreamy," she said. "I was completely drawn by the beauty of these clothes, and then     3     (eventual) came to understand the culture of Hanfu, and I liked it more and more."

Now aged nineteen     4     living in Beijing, Zhang is a member of China's growing "hanfu movement"-a renaissance(复兴)of the ancient clothing traditionally worn by ethnic-majority Han Chinese before     5     Qing dynasty. Tight-knit Hanfu communities and university clubs often meet up for themed     6     (activity). Zhang and her friends sometimes visit places with ancient architecture, like Beijing's Forbidden City,     7     emperors once lived, to take photos in costume and post them on social media.

Nowadays, Hanfu is seen as a way     8     (celebrate) Chinese culture and improve national self-esteem. In the past few years, Hanfu clubs and social media platforms     9     (help) bring the Han clothing hack under the spotlight. "It's the confidence of the younger people, the confidence of the country," said Christine Tsui, a fashion columnist and researcher     10     (base) in Shanghai.

3 . There are many ways to travel within a city. We can walk, cycle, or take a bus. But no matter which way we travel, we have to stick to the route(线路) the city planners laid down for us.

Parkour practitioners (跑酷爱好者), however, see the city in a completely different way. To them, there are no fixed routes. There are no walls and no stairs—since they jump, climb, roll and crawl to move across, through, over and under anything that they find in their path. The city is their playground.

The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has noticed that this activity is drawing more and more people to it—there are 100,000 people taking part in parkour today in the UK alone, according to the Guardian—and how it is helpful for people to be much stronger: It trains coordination(协调性) and balance. So the organization is thinking about recognizing parkour as a new sport and adding it to the Olympics by 2024.

But parkour practitioners themselves don’t seem to be happy with the idea. They see parkour as “a lifestyle”, wrote the website NextSportStar. “It’s a competition against the conditions rather than just a sport.”

Indeed, many do parkour just to “escape the daily routine(事务) and experience the city in different ways”, wrote reporter Oli Mould on The Conversation. They see parkour as a way to express themselves through relaxing moves and creative routes while freeing themselves from the pressure.

It’s great that the FIG wants to develop new sport and stay close to a new cultural form. But it would be greater if they knew that not everything in life is a competition.

1. How do the parkour practitioners do parkour?
A.They move on as they wish.B.They choose the routes the city planners laid down.
C.They run faster than others.D.They stick to certain routes.
2. Why does the FIG want to add parkour to the Olympics?
A.It’s a special way of life.B.It draws their attention.
C.It’s good for people to keep healthy.D.It needs some rules and instructions.
3. What is the author’s idea on parkour?
A.It is more formal than other sports.B.It helps people to be creative.
C.It’s worth adding to the sporting event.D.It calls on people to work as a team.
4. What is the best title for the passage?
A.A new sports competitionB.Parkour practitioners
C.Training in a different wayD.Making the city their own

4 . 阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的短文。续写的词数150字左右。

We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.

Growing up, I wanted to be just like my mom. Kind and caring, she always seemed to make people comfortable in her presence. For years she was a volunteer in our community. I loved going to the local nursing home to help with her until I hit my preteen years. Suddenly, I was too caught up in my adolescent world to worry about helping others.

One particular summer day when I was twelve, Mom came into my room and told me to get up and meet her at the car. I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to ruin everything? Eventually, I made my way outside. I imagined the lake water cooling my skin. Annoyed, I climbed into the car and slammed the door shut. I sat in silence, too upset to make a conversation.

“Tasha, would you like to know where we are going?” Mom asked calmly.

“I guess…,” I murmured under my breath.

“Sweetheart, we are going to a children’s shelter, I have been there before and I think it would benefit you,” she explained.

I felt a knot slowly form in my stomach. How was I supposed to help there?

When we reached the shelter, I was rather surprised. It was a large white Victorian home. As we approached the large front porch, wind bells played a calming tune while trees and blossoms welcomed us. Maybe this wasn’t going to be so bad.

Mom rang the doorbell. The door flew open and we were led to the front room, where all of the children were playing. Toys were spread out across the floor. I noticed a baby whose body was scarred with wounds. The majority of the children had noticeable physical scars(伤疤) such as cuts, scratches and burns. What a terrible life they had before they moved here! My heart sank.

As I was looking around, I felt a gentle pull on my shirt.____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I returned to the shelter with Mom several times._______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

9 . I have dreamt of taking a trip to Hawaii since I graduated but the best thing always needs waiting. I took a trip with my friends to Haleakala National Park which lies in Hawaii.

When we arrived at Haleakala National Park we were suggested to watch the early morning sunrise. I was lost in the sightseeing that afternoon so I could hardly wait to meet the sunrise. In the next morning we all jumped out of the bed very early at 3 o'clock and walked to the rocks by the seaside. In the first half an hour we imagined how wonderful it would be when the first light came out through the thick clouds and how soft it would be when the light touched our skin so we waited and waited. However another half an hour later I gradually lost my patience since there was nothing but the chilly darkness and I felt that I was frozen to death. But my friends were still extremely cheerful.

Nearly another one hour later “Amazing!” a word burst out from Judy and we all shouted to welcome the light orange greatness which is really unbelievable. Until today I dare say that it is the most impressive(印象深刻的)sunrise in my life. However waiting in the morning darkness is also the one I can not wipe out forever.

Waiting sometimes is really a hard thing for most of us as it needs patience and strong-willed determination but what about the result after that? It might turn out to be pleasingly unbelievable and satisfied. So it is really worthwhile to wait for the best.

1. When did they see the first light of the sunrise?
A.About 3 o'clock.B.About 4 o'clock.
C.Nearly 5 o'clock.D.Nearly 6 o'clock.
2. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “chilly” in paragraph two?

C.Terrible.D.Interesting.
3. What’s the author’s attitude towards waiting for the sunrise?
A.Excited all the time.B.Afraid all the time.
C.Firstly excited then afraid.D.Firstly excited then impatient.
4. What does the author want to tell us by this passage?
A.Sometimes it is worthwhile to wait for the best.
B.Hawaii is a good place to enjoy the sunrise.
C.I enjoyed the most flaming sunrise in my life.
D.My friends and I took a trip to Hawaii.

10 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Jenny was a pretty eight-year-old girl.

One day when she and her mother were checking out at the grocery store, Jenny saw a plastic pearl necklace, by which she was totally defeated. How eagerly she wanted it! But when she saw the price, her heart sank a little. She gathered up her courage and asked her mother if she would buy it for her. Her mother said, “Well, it is a pretty necklace, but it costs an awful lot of money. I can buy you the necklace, but when we get home, we should make up a list of housework that you can do to pay for the necklace.” Jenny agreed immediately, feeling a burst of joy. So her mother bought the pearl necklace for her. Jenny worked on her housework determinedly and earnestly every day. Soon Jenny paid off the pearls.

Jenny had a very loving daddy. When Jenny went to bed, he would read Jenny her favorite story. One night when he finished the story, he said, “Jenny, do you love me?” “Oh, yes, Daddy, you know I love you.” the little girl said delightedly, with a broad smile on her face. “Well, then, give me your pearls.” Hearing that, Jenny froze there, an anxious expression twisting her face. “Oh! Daddy, not my pearls! But you can have Rosy, my favorite doll. Remember her? You gave her to me last year for my birthday. Okay?” “Oh no, darling, that’s okay.” Her father brushed her cheek with a kiss, gently and calmly. “Good night, little one.”

A week later, her father once again asked Jenny after her story, “Do you love me?” “Oh yes, Daddy, you know I love you.” the little girl murmured softly, trying to escape from her father’s eyes. “Well, then, give me your pearls.” “Oh, Daddy, not my pearls! But you can have Ribbons, my toy horse. Do you remember her? She is my favorite.” The little girl begged. “No, that’s okay,” her father said, smiling broadly and sweetly and brushed her cheek again with a kiss. “God bless you, little one. Sweet dreams.”
