I love sports. My friends and I often play football in my out-of-class activities. Today I finish my PE test. As a boy I was joined in two parts, the long jump and the 1000m race. I was better at the 1000m race, where took me 5 minutes and 20 seconds. But I didn’t do well at the long jump. I only jumped 4.5 meter. I love sports so much because they can not only make my body stronger, and also let me keep optimistic all the time. While exercised, I can get a strong sense of successful. I can get excited and confident. In word, sports are my favorites.

I have been living in Xiamen for more than six years, but every time I visit Kulangsu, it feels special. Thanks to     4     (it) special mix of cultural and historical elements, Kulangsu makes you feel enriched, and makes you want     5     (know) more about its history. Thanks to the     7     (unique), the island receives some 10 million tourists every year. Subsequently (随后), its preservation becomes     8     big challenge to the local government. In order to better manage visitor traffic on and off the island, there is an international ferry terminal that specifically     9     (cater) to sightseers. People living on the island and holders of a Xiamen Social Insurance Card can use the smaller, faster ferry located next     10     yet another top tourist spot in Xiamen, Zhongshan Pedestrian Road.

5 . How to Be a Good Upstairs Neighbor

One must remember to be polite when living in an apartment building. You may unintentionally bother your neighbors with actions that you think to be harmless.     1     Living upstairs, you must always be aware that everything you do may be heard by those who live below. This doesn’t mean that you have to completely change your lifestyle, though.

2     This will greatly reduce the sound of your footsteps, thus limiting the sound your downstairs neighbor will hear. You should always remember to change your shoes when entering your apartment to ensure that your downstairs neighbor doesn’t hear you walking around.

Place carpets in your apartment if you have hardwood floors. Doing so is another way to decrease the sound of steps coming from an upstairs apartment. You can also put your furniture on these carpets.     3

Close your windows when you can. A floor is usually about three meters high, so it’s quite easy to hear your conversations.     4     Therefore, whenever you are watching TV or listening to a radio, try to keep your windows closed as much as possible.

Do your cleaning on weekend afternoons.     5     Doing such housework at 3:00 pm on a Saturday is much better than doing so at 9:30 on a Tuesday night.

A.Wear slippers while in your upstairs apartment.
B.It becomes much easier when your windows are open.
C.No matter what you do, consider your neighbor’s requirements.
D.There’ll be a time when you will run a cleaner to clean your room.
E.This is especially true for those people who live above an apartment.
F.It will disturb your downstairs neighbor who has to work the next morning.
G.This keeps your furniture from moving around, thus limiting noise a downstairs neighbor may hear.

6 . Angela Pozzi didn’t like seeing plastic trash washing up on the shore near her home in Bandon, Oregon. She wanted to unite her community to clean it up, so she started an organization and called it Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea.

Volunteers help clean up Oregon’s 300 miles of shoreline. Then, using only plastics from the beach cleanup, Ms Pozzi and her staff and many, many volunteers create sculptures of sea animals. Ms Pozzi says, “I want to create sculptures that, hopefully, will make people consider their plastic purchases and be aware of how so much plastic ends up in the oceans.”

Since 2010, more than 10,000 volunteers have collected 21 tons of trash and helped create more than 70 works of art. Four traveling exhibits have displayed the sculptures in more than 18 places. Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, Illinois, hosted an exhibit through September 2018.

People have used plastics to create life-saving medical devices, inexpensive containers and gadgets, and toys, of course. But unlike wood, cotton, and other natural materials, plastics don’t break down into anything useful to other living things. Instead, they stay for years in landfills, waterways, and the oceans. The materials are harmful to some sea animals, such as turtles, sea lions, and birds. Some of these creatures eat plastic objects that look like food. Others become entangled (被缠住) in plastic nets or packaging.

Ms Pozzi gives credit to everyone who helps. “One person didn’t create these sculptures,” she says. “Some people have picked up the plastic; others have sorted the items by color. Still others have washed each piece of plastic trash. Volunteers have drilled holes or helped to make the small wire-stitched panels, while others welded (焊接) the giant frames. I do the heads and detail work, and my staff and I take all the pieces everyone contributes to finish the work.” Says Ms Pozzi, “Until we run out of plastic on the beach, the work will continue.”

1. According to the passage, Washed Ashore ________.
A.is an official organizationB.collects plastics for money
C.turns the waste into artworksD.aims to prevent the use of plastics
2. What do the numbers in Paragraph 3 mainly tell us?
A.The long history of the organization.
B.The accomplishments of the organization.
C.The sculptures are popular in many places.
D.Many people are in favour of the organization.
3. Which can best describe plastics according to the passage?
A.A double-edged sword.B.A threat to living things.
C.More stable in landfills.D.Food for sea creatures.
4. Why does Ms Pozzi introduce the specific process of creating the sculptures?
A.To teach it to readers.B.To show its difficulty.
C.Because she feels very proud.D.Because it is an art by teamwork.

A New Addition to the Family

For the initial ten years of his life, Victor was the prince of the household. As he was an only child, his parents petted him and showered all their love and attention on him. Whatever toys his parents bought, they were always meant for him. Whatever food was in the refrigerator, there was no one to compete with him to polish it off first. Victor could leave his toys or books around the house with complete ease of mind, knowing that there was no one who would get their hands on his belongings and cause any damage.

However, all that was to change overnight when Victor’s parents brought back his new baby sister, Lina, from the hospital. With her rosy cheeks, wide open eyes and angelic smile, Lina caught the hearts of her parents, grandparents and relatives. Everyone focused their attention on the cute bunch of joy. Whenever she cried, her mother or father would rush to her bed. She simply cried because she wanted to be carried. There was little time left for Victor.

Now that Victor’s mother had his baby sister to take care of, she expected Victor himself to do most of the chores he can do. Victor was asked to clean his own room, iron his own school uniform and clean his own shoes. Before Lina’s arrival, he had never lifted a finger to help out with these tasks. The whole family also went out less because it was unhealthy to expose Lina to the bacteria(细菌) being in the outside world too often.

Victor felt neglected by his parents. He felt that they loved Lina more than him. As a result, he tried to attract his parents’ attention by becoming resistant. One evening, Victor’s parents were called up by his teacher because Victor had got into a fight at school. His teacher had noticed Victor’s behaviour and work attitude changing downwards in the past two months. Before that, he had been a model student.

It doesn’t impress like George Washington’s plantation on the Potomac, but Lincoln’s home in downtown Springfield, Illinois,     1     (prove)irresistible to visitors since it opened to the public. Beautifully restored(修复)to its 1860 appearance, the house was Abraham and Mary Lincoln’s home for 17 years. When the house was built, it was much     4     (small)than it is today. Mary’s niece wrote, “The little home     5     (paint)white.” It was sweet and fresh. Mary loved it. She was extremely pretty, and her house was a reflection of     6     (she), everything in good taste and in perfect order.

9 . Man’s best friend is also his oldest. The partnership between dogs and people may go back as much as 40,000 years long predating any other domestication (驯化). And it is based not, as is the case with many succeeding domestications, on a human desire to eat the animal concerned, or to consume some associated product such as milk or eggs, but rather on sincere companionship, though with a little work — and hunting-related using on the side.

How this partnership got going, though, is debated. In particular, unlike other domestications, which involved groups of people who had taken up farming, the domestication of the wolves that became dogs happened while all human beings were still hunter-gatherers. The two species were, in other words, competitors. Yet they managed to become soul mates.

One popular theory is that the wolves which became dogs acted as rubbish cleaners for groups of people, by eating their waste, possibly including their faeces (粪 便).That, though, would be a service more useful to settled farmers than mobile hunter-gatherers. As she writes in Scientific Reports, however, Maria Lahtinen of the Finnish Museum of Natural History thinks she might have the answer as to how wolves and people squared the competitive circle while both species were still hunters. It was, she and her colleagues suggest, simply a matter of remaining calories.

The archaeological (考古的)evidence suggests that wolves were domesticated in wood lands at the edge of the ice sheets of the last ice age, since that is where almost all Palaeolithic dog remains have been found. Dr Lahtinen calculates that, given the large size of hunted animals in this environment, and humans' need to eat a balanced diet with plenty of plant matter in it as well as flesh, there would have been a lot of remaining meat around from kills. What better way to use some of it than to feed a few wolf cubs (幼崽)to provide entertainment and companionship? And thus, she suggests, were dogs born.

1. Why did our ancestors domesticate dogs?
A.To balance their diet.B.To help them to farm.
C.To get rid of rubbish.D.To develop a partnership.
2. What can be inferred according to Dr Lahtinen?
A.Dogs were born as early as wolves.
B.People ever hunted wolves for food.
C.Wolf cubs were raised for remaining meat.
D.Cruel enemies could become good friends.
3. What does the article present us about how dogs were domesticated?
A.A new idea.B.Some evidence.
C.A practical way.D.A scientific report.
4. In what column of a magazine can you find more articles like this one?
A.Home & Life.B.Finance & Economy.
C.History & Future.D.Science & Technology.
