If you live with, or know people, like young kids, the sick or elderly, overweight people, outside workers, check on them frequently during a heat wave. We should monitor those at risk at least twice a day for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, and babies and young children, even more frequently.

Chinese calligraphy is an artistic practice of writing Chinese characters, often with a brush and ink on rice paper. The
Calligraphy is refined art (高雅艺术). Lan Ting Xu, created by Wang Xizhi during the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420),
I have a passion for fishing and animal protection, which can date back to my childhood. When I was young, my father was a fish and wildlife officer, so he traveled all over the province in the spring and fall. He loved his job, especially the part where he protected nature from human.
He’d taught me to fish alone, in silence, lost in my own thoughts.
I still remembered that special day. Midweek, even in late August, no one was around. Police Outpost Lake is as far as you can go and still be in Canada. Songbirds, ducks, and Canada geese glided (滑翔) by on the breeze, touching down briefly on the water’s surface before flapping and quacking their way back up into the sky, passing in front of the sun, temporarily blocking its warming rays.
“How can I get the fish with these birds making noise?” I complained, rod (鱼竿) in my hand.
“Be patient, Jacob. Birds won’t disturb you.”
Out of the corner of my eyes, I suddenly caught a glimpse of a few great northern loons (潜鸟) stayed together not far from the shoreline. Dad once told me loon usually travel alone, but here were five of them in a group. Maybe it was a family? One loon, making odd sounds, swam away from the group, towards me.
This is unusual.
“Dad! Come here! Take a look at this loon!”
Hearing this, dad laid his rod down on the dirty sand, walking quickly towards me.
The loon rested in the shallow water near shore, not ten feet away from us. It was so close, we could see its red eyes.
“Look at that beak (喙)!”I said. “It could easily hurt us to death with that thing! It could tear our faces! Blind our eyes!”
Walking into the water, getting closer to the loon, we both saw thin wire wrapped around its neck. Fishing line maybe? Was there a hook(钩子)on the line, too? Was the loon asking us for help?

6 . Three Ways to Tackle Anxiety
Everyone feels anxious at times. Anxiety can surface when you face a challenge or have something to worry about. It turns on your body’s stress response. This instant rise of stress hormones (荷尔蒙) is a survival response. It prepares you to react quickly and protect yourself. If you’re scared or feel unsafe, anxiety causes you to be careful.
Start with a “growth” mindset (思维模式). Some people have a fixed mindset. They think, “I’m too anxious to speak in class. So I don’t raise my hand.” They don’t think things can change.
Breathe. When you feel anxious, take a few slow breaths. Slow breaths can slow the release of stress hormones.
Learning to tackle anxiety takes time, patience, and practice. Being willing to face situations that cause anxiety really helps .Start with one small step.
A.Talk to others. |
B.Face the situation. |
C.It’s best to learn how to deal with it. |
D.They can be uncomfortable but they aren’t harmful. |
E.They can help your body and mind feel more at ease. |
F.The more you practice, the better you’ll get at lowering anxiety. |
G.But brain science shows that you can teach your brain new ways to respond. |
7 . Most e-bikes have rechargeable lithium-ion (锂离子) batteries, the same that power smartphones and laptops. All these batteries have the potential to fail when damaged, overcharged or operated in extreme temperature conditions. E-bike batteries, though, are much bigger — between 50 to 100 times more — than the ones in our personal electronics, and pose a greater risk.
On May 20, a folding bike in a South London apartment began smoking, then within seconds a big fire erupted. According to Dom Ellis, deputy commissioner for the LondonFire Brigade, the bike’s owner purchased it second-hand to commute (通勤) to work and bought an aftermarket battery from an unclear online marketplace.
Lithium-ion batteries are popular because they’re easily rechargeable. But if something fails, they can overheat, said Anna Stefanopoulou, professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Michigan. This kicks off a bad cycle called thermal runaway. The melting battery materials fuel the flames, sending out more heat, and that heat also creates a flammable (易燃的) gas, she said. In other words, when a battery breaks down, the fire is self-sustaining (自我维持的) and hot.
Electric cars also contain lithium-ion batteries, but fires are less common compared with e-bikes. Cars have cooling systems and their batteries are more protected, she said. Any electric vehicle battery replacements would also likely take place through an authorized facility.
E-bikes, on the other hand, don’t have temperature regulators and their batteries are more exposed to the environment and possible impact, so minor manufacturing flaws (生产缺陷) can become problems, Stefanopoulou added. She said the cheaper batteries can suffer from flaws and low-quality control.
E-bike riders also tend to use their batteries more actively. A huge battery in an electric car can last more than 200 miles, and drivers top them off (加满) regularly. E-bike commuters are used to draining their batteries again and again throughout the week, which can add to the stress.
1. Why are e-bike batteries much more dangerous than the ones in personal electronics?A.They are of much larger. |
B.They are of different materials. |
C.They are easily overcharged or damaged. |
D.They are operated in extreme temperature conditions. |

B.It was produced by an unqualified manufacturer. |
C.It was already out of date when second-hand bought. |
D.Its original battery was replaced with an aftermarket one. |
A.Electric cars seldom use lithium-ion batteries. |
B.Electric car batteries are not exposed to heat or fires. |
C.Electric cars are equipped with battery-protection systems. |
D.Electric cars are equipped with better lithium-ion batteries. |

8 . When most kids go to the beach, they’re too focused on making sandcastles and splashing around to notice litter, but several years ago, for 7-year-old Cash Daniels, noticing a plastic straw sparked a lifelong passion for saving the planet.
Cash, who is now known as the “conservation kid”, has always loved nature. He grew up fishing along the Chattanooga River, after all! But once he learned that 80 percent of all trash from land and rivers ends up in the ocean, he couldn’t sit back.
He started with cleanups along the river, something that quickly went from a family affair to a community effort with volunteers and neighbors. In 2019, Cash, together with a Canadian conservationist, Ella Galaski-Rossen, started a nonprofit called the Cleanup Kids. Despite living in different countries, they managed to create educational videos on their YouTube channel. “We hope to be a really big nonprofit that eliminates plastic in the U. S. and Canada,” Cash said. “We want to inform kids and adults in the landlocked states of how their actions are connected to the water and the ocean,” Cash said.
Cash was selected as one of America’s top 10 youth volunteers of 2021 by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. He also earned the title of National Honoree, where he received a$5,000 grant to go to a nonprofit of his choice, and he became the first person to win the Youth Conservationist Award two years in a row from the Tennessee Wildlife Federation.
“I want to travel the world, teach others, and help them feel connected to the ocean. Because if you are connected to the ocean-if you love it and what lives in it—you’ll want to protect it,” he said. “This is my fun, and it becomes more fun with every new discovery.”
