Festivals are a great way to understand one’s culture. A child can be taught more about their culture and their country during festivals and celebrations. This makes them proud of their country and culture.

    3

Festivals also mean gift-giving and sharing. The exchange of gifts teaches children to share joys. When children participate in donating or gifting to the poor during festivals, they learn to share and care for others. While celebrations can be a fun time for children, the lessons they receive are even more valuable and long-lasting.

4 . Last May, my 15-year-old son Ben, informed his mother and me that he would like to attend an upcoming rap concert of Kendrick Lamar. We told our son that he was too young to go to a concert in Toronto alone. But my son refused to take no for an answer.

A few weeks later I happened to be in Ottawa visiting my mother and her sister, Martha. I complained to them about the absurdity (荒唐) of my situation: a man in his fifties attending a rap concert so that his son could go! Then they told me a story.

In the summer of 1964, my aunt Martha, then an 11-year-old girl begged her father, Cuthbert, who was 61, to attend a concert of the Beatles. Cuthbert had to drive Martha from Ottawa to Montreal to see the Fab Four. Once the band came on the stage, the crowd exploded. Poor old Cuthbert didn’t know what had hit him. But as the band started to sing, Cuthbert found he was getting into it. His foot was tapping (轻拍). By the time McCartney started to sing, Cuthbert appeared to have forgotten that he was a respected lawyer.

If Cuthbert could attend a Beatles concert without embarrassing his daughter, I could do something similar for my son. The first thing to do was to learn something about Mr. Lamar and his music. I downloaded and listened to all his albums. I even had some discussions with Ben about what to wear.

The truth is the concert was great. While Kendrick Lamar may still not be my favourite, I’m glad my son introduced me to him, and I’m glad I went.

Often, we don’t keep an open mind to new things and new experiences. Fortunately, we have children, like Ben and Martha, to help us do that.

文章大意:这是一篇议论文。文章主要列举了一些导致生活不快乐的破坏性信念。

6 . I have seen too many people waste their potential and live unhappily because they can’t overcome some destructive limiting beliefs.     1

“I need to know everything before I start.”

We often overthink things. We get stuck in a thinking pattern, and we can’t decide. We keep going back and forth. But no one starts with all the answers. Even Warren Buffet started without knowing everything about investing.     2     We learn along the way. But if we never start, we can’t do that.

“What if it doesn’t work out?”

A lot of us are already thinking way too far ahead. “What if it doesn’t work out and I end up wasting a few years? I am better off staying where I am. ” That’s the kind of thinking that makes people miserable and regret their decisions later.     3     It’s also possible that whatever we’re doing right now wouldn’t work out. But we all have to adapt, for there is no “safe” job or business. So if we are going to pursue something, it’s more practical to do what brings us joy.

“I don’t know what I want!”

This is a limiting belief that most people never become aware of     4     And yet, they do nothing because “I don’t know what I want!” Actually, if we don’t know what we want, we can start by improving the areas that keep us from living well. When stopping saying “I will do it later,” we get a major boost in life.

    5

Do you know what’s really too late? It’s when we don’t start going after the things we want. There is no point in waiting for the “perfect timing.” Life is not a race but a marathon, so only when we keep going consistently, can we really make it.

A.It’s too late to start.
B.It’s never too late to start!
C.It’s the same for everyone.
D.Yes, things might not work out.
E.Get over these, and they will never live aimlessly again.
F.They choose to live a seemingly steady life, without any personal growth.
G.They know that their career, health, or relationship is making them unhappy.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。本文主要介绍了介绍一种中国传统艺术形式——中国结,介绍了其起源、传播、样式和文化内涵。

10 . Chinese fancy knots (中国结), also called Chinese knots, are very important in Chinese culture. They began as a form of traditional art in the Tang and Song Dynasties (朝代) in China, and became popular in the Ming Dynasty. Long ago, they found their way to Japan and other Southeast Asian countries, and were well received there. Now they are regarded as one of the symbols of Chinese culture.

As for the name itself, it is surely meaningful. The Chinese word for “knot”, jie, means “connection”. And the pronunciation of the Chinese word jie is very close to that of ji, “good luck”. As a result, Chinese knots are used as a way to express people’s strong wishes for marvellous things like happiness, love and good luck.

Small ones are connected to jewellery (珠宝), clothes and gifts in order to draw people’s attention, while large ones are used to make a living room or study more beautiful. Whether large or small, they are named after their shapes and usages. For example, Double Coin Knots are called Shuangqian Jie because they are in the shape of two ancient Chinese coins, meaning “good things come in pairs”. Besides, Chinese knots are famous for their bright colors. Different colors have different traditional cultural meanings.
