3 . Here are some of the best fall fairs from New England states.
Connecticut: Durham Fair
Dates: September 22-25
The 98th Annual Durham Fair might not be Connecticut’s oldest (that honor goes to the Four Town Fair), but it is the state’s largest. And it has a special focus on kids, making it well worth the two-hour drive from Boston.
The Durham Fair even has a mini-fairground designed especially for children that features activities like a pedal tractor pull and all sorts of games, plus a stage with little animals and magic shows.
Maine: Fryeburg Fair
Dates: October 2-9
The Fryeburg Fair is the farthest away from Boston, but that doesn’t stop people from travelling from all over the country with their kids to experience one of New England’s finest fall fairs. The fair has some unique spins that celebrate what makes Maine special, like Woodsmen’s Field Day with an exciting competition featuring log-rolling, axe-throwing, and tree falling. The fair has all kinds of farm animals, from draft horses to camels.
Massachusetts: Topsfield Fair
Dates: September 30 - October 10
Probably the most well-known fair on the list for Bostonians is the Topsfield Fair, which takes place in our backyard. The origins of this fair go back nearly 200 years ago and it’s truly a classic fall agricultural fair. Topsfield has everything from the rides for children to many farm animals, like pigs, goats, cows, chickens and rabbits.
New Hampshire: Sandwich Fair
Dates: October 8-10
Two hours north of Boston, you will find the Sandwich Fair. Saturday at the fair is Children’s Day, which includes a kid’s pedal tractor pull and Mo the clown. Sunday is Family Day, where you will find a miniature horse demo and the Grand Street Parade. While you are at the fair, hike nearby West Rattlesnake or check out some of the other things to do near Lake Winnipesaukee.

4 . Many people think of guys as being carefree when it comes to their appearance. But in fact, a lot of guys spend plenty of time in front of the mirror. They care just as much as girls do about their body image.
Body image is a person's opinions and feelings about his or her own body and physical appearance.
Recognize your strengths.
Different body types are good for different things. What does your body do well? Maybe your speed, strength, or coordination makes you better than others at a certain sport. That may be basketball, table tennis, mountain biking, dancing, or even running. Or perhaps you have non-sports skills, like drawing, painting, singing, playing a musical instrument, writing, or acting.
Exercise regularly.
Exercise can help you look well and feel good about yourself. Good physiques(体形) don't just happen.
Respect your body.
Practising good habits-regular showering; taking care of your teeth, hair, and skin; wearing clean clothes, and so on-can help you build a positive body image.
Your body is just one part of who you are. Your talent for comedy, a quick wit(智慧), and all the other things make you unique. So try not to let small imperfections take over.

6 . Gestures-such as pointing or waving-go hand in hand with a child's first words, and twins lag (滞后)behind single children in producing and using those gestures, two studies from Georgia State University psychology researchers show.
The lag in gesture among twins may be mostly due to lower parental input, Ozcaliskan said. It's likely that parents caring for twins engage in shorter conversations with their children, including gesturing less, because their attention is divided and their labor is doubled. However, parents of single children used a greater amount and diversity of gestures than parents of twins. Ozcaliskan said she had grown curious about gesture because it had not yet been studied among twins. We have already known that twins are initially at a disadvantage where language is concerned. Most of the time, these lags are within the normal range of differences, and nothing to worry about. Almost all children will catch up to each other by around age three and a half.
“However, there was almost nothing in research on gesturing among twins," Ozcaliskan said. Babies start using pointing around 10 months, a few months before they produce their first words. Gesture helps them convey what they can't yet communicate in speech and prepares the way for children's early words.
Twins sometimes develop their own systems of communication, even their own “twin language," which has also been shown to delay language acquisition. “Perhaps it also delays the use of gestures. Gesture and speech together form a closely integrated system in a child's development, and a child's first gestures often precede their first attempts at speech," Ozcaliskan said.
"Gesture is a very powerful tool," she said. “Pay attention to your child's gestures, and then provide verbal(言语的) descriptions to help their language development, such as naming objects when children point to them."
1. What mainly causes twins to produce and use fewer gestures?A.Reduced parental input. |

9 . Since his students began using Quizlet, the English teacher Tristan Thorne has noticed an improvement in their ability to learn and use new words. Quizlet is a learning app, a computer program you use on your mobile phone. It can help users build and test their knowledge of English words. Quizlet has words set for millions of subjects. And, it is quickly becoming a useful mobile tool for language learners.
Thorne teachers at Columbia University in New York City. Thanks to learning apps, Jeff Strack, another English teachers, has also noticed the improvement in his students’ ability to remember information. He teachers at Hostos Community College, also in New York. He and Thorne are part of a growing number of language educators adding mobile apps to their classes.
Strack and Thorne seem to agree that the days when teachers would not permit(允许) the use of mobile phones are gone. When they use apps, language learner communicate more differently than in a traditional classroom. Users act on or respond to something, instead of just listening to new information.
Thorne believes that apps can help learners become more active in learning. For example, each week, his students are required to add vocabularies to Quizlet for others to use. He says some apps also make it easy for students to know their language strengths and weaknesses.
The biggest improvement Strack has seen in his students is that they are much more active in whole-class or small-group discussions. “Apps let all students take part in the activity, whether it’s a game, quiz or practice activity.” he says.
Many existing learning apps are designed for students of all ages and levels. Some are designed for group activities. Some support independent learning. Still some are good for homework. Thorne says he especially likes Quizlet and three other apps: QR Codes, Socrative and Evernote.

10 . My mother, a nurse at Stony Brook University Hospital, worked at night so that she could come home in time to send me to school. She’d sleep during the day and be ready when we returned home before heading out again in the evening. This went on for 23 years. She never complained (抱怨). No matter how tired she was, she always had enough energy to be my mom
She often had to work on holidays, even on New Year’s Eve, which made me unhappy. However, before holidays she always decorated the inside and outside of our house. She’d also have cookies baked in the oven, a holiday-themed movie in the VCR, and music playing throughout our house for us. But when it was time to go to work, there was no room for debate. “Why do you have to work on this day of all days?” I’d ask sadly. “They need me, too, dear son.” She’d say.
For a long time I didn’t understand why she should care so much about those sick strangers. Recently, as my grandmother became ill, I found myself spending more time in the hospital. The scenes I saw in the hospital made me see the different side of my mother. The nurses checked the heart, blood and oxygen levels to make sure patients were comfortable. They lifted patients in and out of bed and helped them to the bathroom. Beyond their duties, the nurses showed consideration (体贴) for each patient.
What I saw helped me understand why my mother was devoted to her occupation (职业). I was filled with more admiration for my mother.
