3 . Here are some of the best fall fairs from New England states.

Connecticut: Durham Fair
Dates: September 22-25

The 98th Annual Durham Fair might not be Connecticut’s oldest (that honor goes to the Four Town Fair), but it is the state’s largest. And it has a special focus on kids, making it well worth the two-hour drive from Boston.

The Durham Fair even has a mini-fairground designed especially for children that features activities like a pedal tractor pull and all sorts of games, plus a stage with little animals and magic shows.
Maine: Fryeburg Fair
Dates: October 2-9

The Fryeburg Fair is the farthest away from Boston, but that doesn’t stop people from travelling from all over the country with their kids to experience one of New England’s finest fall fairs. The fair has some unique spins that celebrate what makes Maine special, like Woodsmen’s Field Day with an exciting competition featuring log-rolling, axe-throwing, and tree falling. The fair has all kinds of farm animals, from draft horses to camels.

Massachusetts: Topsfield Fair
Dates: September 30 - October 10

Probably the most well-known fair on the list for Bostonians is the Topsfield Fair, which takes place in our backyard. The origins of this fair go back nearly 200 years ago and it’s truly a classic fall agricultural fair. Topsfield has everything from the rides for children to many farm animals, like pigs, goats, cows, chickens and rabbits.

New Hampshire: Sandwich Fair
Dates: October 8-10

Two hours north of Boston, you will find the Sandwich Fair. Saturday at the fair is Children’s Day, which includes a kid’s pedal tractor pull and Mo the clown. Sunday is Family Day, where you will find a miniature horse demo and the Grand Street Parade. While you are at the fair, hike nearby West Rattlesnake or check out some of the other things to do near Lake Winnipesaukee.

5 . Gestures-such as pointing or waving-go hand in hand with a child's first words, and twins lag (滞后)behind single children in producing and using those gestures, two studies from Georgia State University psychology researchers show.

The lag in gesture among twins may be mostly due to lower parental input, Ozcaliskan said. It's likely that parents caring for twins engage in shorter conversations with their children, including gesturing less, because their attention is divided and their labor is doubled. However, parents of single children used a greater amount and diversity of gestures than parents of twins. Ozcaliskan said she had grown curious about gesture because it had not yet been studied among twins. We have already known that twins are initially at a disadvantage where language is concerned. Most of the time, these lags are within the normal range of differences, and nothing to worry about. Almost all children will catch up to each other by around age three and a half.

“However, there was almost nothing in research on gesturing among twins," Ozcaliskan said. Babies start using pointing around 10 months, a few months before they produce their first words. Gesture helps them convey what they can't yet communicate in speech and prepares the way for children's early words.

Twins sometimes develop their own systems of communication, even their own “twin language," which has also been shown to delay language acquisition. “Perhaps it also delays the use of gestures. Gesture and speech together form a closely integrated system in a child's development, and a child's first gestures often precede their first attempts at speech," Ozcaliskan said.

"Gesture is a very powerful tool," she said. “Pay attention to your child's gestures, and then provide verbal(言语的) descriptions to help their language development, such as naming objects when children point to them."

1. What mainly causes twins to produce and use fewer gestures?
A.Reduced parental input.
B.Undivided parental attention.
C.Too much “twin language".
D.Slow language development.
2. The underlined word “precede" in Paragraph 5 probably means _
A.count on
B.go with
C.come before
D.call up
3. Which of the following may best help children's language development?
A.When the child smiles, parents smile big smiles as well.
B.When the child makes a small mistake, parents ignore it.
C.When the child points to a doll, parents pass it to him or her quickly.
D.When the child points to a bottle, parents point to it, saying “bottle".
4. What can be learned from the study?
A.Twins fall behind single children in early gesturing.
B.Twins are at a disadvantage in language of a lifetime.
C.Enough research has been done on twins' gesturing.
D.Gestures prepare children for future development.

7 . My mother, a nurse at Stony Brook University Hospital, worked at night so that she could come home in time to send me to school. She’d sleep during the day and be ready when we returned home before heading out again in the evening. This went on for 23 years. She never complained (抱怨). No matter how tired she was, she always had enough energy to be my mom

She often had to work on holidays, even on New Year’s Eve, which made me unhappy. However, before holidays she always decorated the inside and outside of our house. She’d also have cookies baked in the oven, a holiday-themed movie in the VCR, and music playing throughout our house for us. But when it was time to go to work, there was no room for debate. “Why do you have to work on this day of all days?” I’d ask sadly. “They need me, too, dear son.” She’d say.

For a long time I didn’t understand why she should care so much about those sick strangers. Recently, as my grandmother became ill, I found myself spending more time in the hospital. The scenes I saw in the hospital made me see the different side of my mother. The nurses checked the heart, blood and oxygen levels to make sure patients were comfortable. They lifted patients in and out of bed and helped them to the bathroom. Beyond their duties, the nurses showed consideration (体贴) for each patient.

What I saw helped me understand why my mother was devoted to her occupation (职业). I was filled with more admiration for my mother.

1. Why did the author’s mother work in the evening?
A.To decorate their house.B.To enjoy a movie.
C.To take him to school.D.To sleep during the day.
2. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?
A.The author wished his mother could stay home on holidays.
B.The mother loved her patients more than her son.
C.Nurses are paid a double salary working on holidays.
D.Only people with mercy on patients would make good nurses.
3. What made the author really understand his mother’s work?
A.The things his mother did during holiday.
B.His mother’s tiredness after work.
C.His mother’s helping patients to the bathroom.
D.What he saw when he looked after his sick grandma in the hospital.

9 . “Farm to table” is the name of a movement that encourages people to eat locally grown food. The farm-to-table idea has become more popular in recent years. But there is also a movement that brings “table to farm”. Its purpose is to connect people to the land and to honor local farmers by creating a sort of restaurant without walls.

Its founder, Jim Denevan, got the idea for this kind of “culinary adventure (美食探险)”, as he called it, ten years ago. He recently prepared tables for more than a hundred people at Briars Farm in Virginia. He and his eight-member team arrived the night before. Chefs (厨师) from a local   restaurant prepared the dinner.

Jim Denevan’s brother is a farmer and he himself is a chef. He thought that the idea of a meal served right on the farm made sense, though not everyone agreed.

“But I wanted to make the idea work, so I decided to cross the country, “ said Denevan. “I went all the way across the United States and set the table on farms, ranches (大牧场) and beaches, and all the places where food came from. “

“This kind of event connects us with a lot of enthusiastic people, people that we can form relationships with, “ said Matt Szechenyi, who operates Briars Farm.

The tour of the farm ends at the dinner table. The meats in the meal come from Matt Szechenyi’s farm. The vegetables come from nearby farms. Guests and local farmers sit together.

Annoica Ingram came with a friend. “The food is wonderful. I appreciate their hard work. I see everything they have to do to take care of the animals and make sure they are well-cared-for. Without them, I think, we’ll have big problems, “ she said.

1. What is the main purpose of the movement “table to farm”?
A.To provide people with healthy food.
B.To help farmers earn more money.
C.To honor farmers for their hard work.
D.To encourage people to work less and practice more.

A.worried
B.grateful
C.doubtful
D.supportive
3. What kind of writing is the passage likely to be?
A.A travel guide.
B.A news report.
C.A diary.
