文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要说明了中国人缅怀袁隆平先生的原因,批判了西方对中国不准确的预测。
2 . 阅读下面短文, 在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Lots of foreigners don’t understand why so many Chinese people are sorrowful about Yuan Longping’s passing away.

This reminds me     1     an issue more than 20 years ago,     2     I was a Chinese journalist in the US. Some American scholars     3     (think) China could hardly realize food-sufficiency because of the     4     (limit) water resources, decrease of agricultural land due to industrial     5     (expand) and the fast population growth. Just at that time, Yuan Longping announced breakthroughs in planting the new rice.     6     (bring) to large area application, this technique improved the annual growth of rice greatly, which fed     7     population of 60 million--equal to the whole of the UK.

Western scholars’ prediction of China back then was indeed analyzing China’s problems, but they failed     8     (realize) that the Chinese people have the capability to deal with these challenges.

If they had had any knowledge of Yuan who worked devotedly for our country, they wouldn’t have made such pessimistic evaluations. Why did the Chinese people make     9    ? Why are so many predictions about China in the West     10    (accurate)? It’s time to change minds to better understand China.

3 . People are consumers(消费者). We have to spend large parts of our days finding, buying, cooking and eating our food.Did you ever think it might be nice to be able to make your own food like plants do?     1     They perform a process called photosynthesis using light from the sun, water and carbon dioxide. The end result of this chemical reaction is sugar for the plant to “eat”. The plant gives off water and oxygen.

2     Plants have special structures called chloroplasts(叶绿体) that animals don’t have. These structures are filled with chlorophyll, which gives leafy green plants their green color. Their main job is to absorb light from the sun. Chloroplasts can absorb every color except green. Light makes chlorophyll active. It creates an energy that separates water out into hydrogen and oxygen.    3

Hydrogen from the water combines with carbon from the carbon dioxide we breathe out. Oxygen is sent out into the air.

4     Plants rely on the carbon dioxide that we breathe out, and we rely on the oxygen that they “breathe” out. This is one good reason for protecting plant life on Earth. Many plants can produce a constant supply of oxygen for us. We need plants in order to survive.

Conservation(保护) projects around the globe are aimed at protecting our natural resources, including numerous species of plants.    5

A.Plants are producers.
B.Chemical reactions take place.
C.Animals can’t live without water.
D.People and plants make perfect partners.
E.So how do plants do it,and why can’t we?
F.There would be too much carbon dioxide in the air.
G.Our quality of life and the fresh air we breathe depend upon our green plant partners.

Nick was a 10-year-old boy. He was the only son to his parents. Nick’s father was a very busy businessman who could not spend time with his son. He came home after Nick slept, and was off to the office before Nick woke up in the morning. Nick longed for his father’s attention. He wanted to go outdoors and play with his father just like his friends did.

One day, Nick was surprised to see his father at home in the evening.

“Dad, it is a big surprise to see you at home,” Nick said.

“Yes, son, my meeting was cancelled. So I’m at home. But after two hours I have to catch a flight,” his father replied.

“When will you be back?”

“Tomorrow noon.”

Nick was in deep thought for a while. Then he asked, “Dad, how much do you earn in a year?”

Nick’s father was taken aback (震惊). He said, “My dear son, it’s a very big amount and you won’t be able to understand it.”

“OK, Dad, are you happy with the amount you earn? ”

“Yes, my dear. I’m very happy, and in fact I’m planning to launch our new branch and a new business in a few months. Isn’t that great?”

“Yes, Dad. I’m happy to hear that. Can I ask you one more question?”

“Yes, dear.”

“Dad, can you tell me how much you earn in a day or even half a day?”

“Nick, why are you asking this question? ”Nick’s father was perplexed.

But Nick was persistent. “Please answer me. Could you please tell me how much you earn in an hour?”

Nick’s father gave in and replied, “It will be around $25 per hour.”

Nick ran to his room upstairs, and came down with his piggy bank that contained his savings.

5 . “Your playful days are over,” my brother said to me when he knew I was going to be a Senior One student. Then he continued telling me that senior school life was boring because I had to do a large amount of homework every day. The subjects were much more difficult than those of junior school.

I stepped into the school gate with a nervous heart. However, I was surprised to find what I experienced there was completely different from what my brother had told me.

The teachers gave excellent lessons in their own special way. They talked with me in a natural and fair way, as if I was an adult. All of them are so knowledgeable (学识渊博) and they not only explained the contents of textbooks but also provided extra information from other sources. Every word they said in classes made me so excited and interested that I had a strong desire to take in as much as I could.

In fact, my playful days were not over at all in senior school. There were many kinds of activities I could take part in. For example, sports meetings, the art festival, English corner, outing and so on. Best of all, generally, students organized the activities rather than teachers. Through this process, I improved my leadership abilities and communication skills. I've become mature (成熟的). I am not a kid any more.

Now if anyone asks me: “Through your process of growing up, which part is most impressive up till now?” Well, the answer will absolutely be my “senior high school life”.

1. How did the writer feel when he started his senior high school?
A.Very excited.B.A little worried.
C.Quite relaxed.D.Embarrassed.
2. What was the writer's general impression of his teachers?
A.Strict and organized.B.Modest and hardworking.
C.Learned and easy going.D.Helpful and kind-hearted.
3. What has the writer learned by joining in different after-class activities?
A.Reading and writing skills.B.The understanding of textbooks
C.Leadership and social skills.D.Doing housework.
4. What can you learn from the last paragraph?
A.His senior school life is the most memorable.
B.Senior school life was boring and tiring.
C.He will no longer believe in his brother.
D.The writer did well in all his subjects.

6 . “They’re harming your brain.” “They’re ruining your eyes.” “They’re turning you into a violent person.” The words said publicly against video games are so common, but are these worries founded on actual science? Countless studies have offered different opinions on whether video games are bad for you. We’ve rounded up the most notable reports and studies below, so you can weigh up the evidence for yourself.

In 2013, psychologist(心理学家) Simone Kuhn studied the influences of spending long hours on video games on the brains of young adults and found that several areas became bigger than before. These areas are connected with higher cognitive functions(认知功能), memory formation and fine motor(精细运动) function.

Last year, psychologists said that video game players who favour violent games are more likely to be violent when offline. Dr. Mark Appelbaum of the American Psychological Association said that there was a relation between violent video game use and increases in violent behaviour.

Dr. Daphne Bavelier is an expert in the field of Brain & Cognitive Sciences. Bavelier presented the audience with a colour-word test, where non-gamers are easily puzzled by the test, and those who spend long periods playing on their computers are more likely to pass the test with flying colours.

“Actually, those video game players have many other advantages in terms of attention,” said Bavelier, “and one part of attention which is also improved for the better is our ability to follow the movements of objects.”

“So, in a sense, when we think about the influence of video games on the brain, it’s very similar to the influence of wine on the health. There are some very poor uses of wine. There are some very poor uses of video games. But when drunk in reasonable amounts, and at the right age, wine can be very good for health,” said Bavelier.

1. What can be learned from Simone Kuhn’s study?
A.Video games make you happier.B.Video games make your brain grow.
C.Video games play a key role in memory.D.Video games teach you how to learn fast.
2. What was Dr. Mark Appelbaum’s attitude towards video games?
A.He was against them.B.He was hopeful of them.
C.He was in favour of them.D.He was uncertain about them.
3. Which of the following may Dr. Daphne Bavelier agree with?
A.Video games fix attention problems.
B.Video games make kids do well in exams.
C.Video games encourage violent behaviour.
D.Video games help increase colour knowledge.
4. Why are the uses of wine mentioned in the last paragraph?
A.To remind people to avoid video games.
B.To show the disadvantages of video games.
C.To help people learn more about video games.
D.To ask people to make good use of video games.

7 . TikTok has pushed a new safety update in November to its app that allows parents to take more control of their teenager's accounts, as social media companies come under increasing pressure to make their platforms safer for children.

The company said Tuesday that its “Family Pairing” feature now enables parents to turn off comments on their children's videos entirely or to limit them to friends only. Parents whose accounts are linked to their kids will also be able to set their accounts to private, turn off the search function for content, users or sounds, and limit who can see which videos their children have liked.

Launched (发布) in March, the Family Pairing tool lets parents see how long their children are spending on TikTok each day and limit the content they can see.

TikTok allows children to register and create an account if they're over the age of 13. All they need to do is provide their date of birth. However, because TikTok doesn't require registers to prove their identities, some children under 13 have registered by lying about their age, according to U. K. regulator Ofcom (英国通讯管理局).

Alexandra Evans, head of child safety public policy for TikTok in Europe, told CNBC that Family Pairing has “put itself in parents’ shoes” since it was launched.

“If we're thinking about it as a toolbox, we wanted to offer more tools,” she said on a video call ahead of the announcement.

1. What pushed TikTok to launch the new update?
A.The pressure from social media.B.The concern about kids' online safety.
C.The force from government.D.The increasing need of users.
2. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.The safety tips from TikTok.B.New apps explored by TikTok.
C.New functions of Family Pairing.D.The limits on Family Pairing.
3. What is Ofcom mainly concerned about?
A.The difficulty in opening an account.B.The low age limit for users.
C.TikTok's failure to check identities.D.The demand for users' birth dates.
4. What's Evans attitude toward the new Family Pairing?
A.Uninterested.B.Objective.
C.Disappointed.D.Supportive.
