文章大意:本文为一篇说明文,本文作者结合自身的育儿经历介绍了一种特定的育儿方法——“依恋育儿”法。

1 . Attachment Parenting is not Indulgent (纵容) Parenting. Attachment parents do not “spoil” their children. Spoiling is done when a child is given everything that they want regardless of what they need and what is practical. Indulgent parents give toys for tantrums (发脾气), ice cream for breakfast. Attachment parents don’t give their children everything they want, they give their children everything that they need. Attachment parents believe that love and comfort are free and necessary. Not sweets or toys.

Attachment Parenting is not “afraid of tears” parenting. Our kids cry and have tantrums sometimes, of course. But they do this because their emotions are so strong that they need to get them out. They simply expect us to listen to them. We pick up our babies when they cry, and we respond to the tears of our older children because we believe firmly that comfort is free, love is free, and that when a child is in need of comfort and love, it is our job to provide these things.

Attachment Parenting is not Clingy Parenting. I do not cling (抓紧) to my children. In fact, I’m pretty free-range. As soon as they can move, they usually move away from me. Sure, I carry them and hug them and chase them and kiss them and rock them and sleep with them. But this is not me following them everywhere and pulling them back to me. This is me being a home base.

Attachment Parenting is not Helicopter Parenting. I don’t hover. I supervise (监督). I follow, I teach, I demonstrate, I explain. I don’t slap (拍,打) curious hands away. I show how to do things safely. I let my child do what he wishes to do, first with help and then with supervision and finally with trust. I don’t insist that my 23-month-old hold my hand when we walk on the sidewalk because I know that I can recall him with my voice because he trusts me to allow him to explore and he trusts me to explain when something is dangerous and to help him satisfy his curiosities safely.

Most of the negative things that I hear about “Attachment Parents” are completely off-base and describe something that is entirely unlike Attachment-Parenting. Attachment Parenting is child-centered and focuses on the needs of the child. Attachment Parents simply believe that children are taught, not trained.

Is Counting Calories Good for Weight Loss?

Mark Haub, who teaches nutrition as Kansas State University, wanted to prove to his students that weight loss is simply about calories. Therefore, for ten weeks, the professor started to eat an 1,800-calorie diet     1     (consist) of a Twinkie (奶油蛋糕) every three hours. He also dined on other junk food.

When he started, Haub tipped the scale at 201 pounds,    2     for his weight was considered overweight. By the end of his snack-food test, he       3     (lose) 27 pounds. The story went viral, with the media     4     (call) Haub’s eating plan the Twinkie Diet.

Haub’s message has been standard advice for more than a century. According to many experts, it all comes down to straightforward math:     5     you take in fewer than you burn, you lose weight. Countless millions who struggle with their weight dutifully track their calorie intake, but eventually many discover that all the counting is in vain.

One reason is that calorie counts are not always accurate. The Food and Drug Administration allows numbers on nutrition labels    6     (be) off by as much as 20 percent, and usually the error is undercount. That means, for example, that ice cream claiming to have 180 calories per serving may actually have 215.

Listed calories may also be wrong     7     the way our bodies digest certain foods. Take almonds (杏仁), for instance. Nutrition labels show them to have up to 170 calories per ounce. But this number does not take into account the fact that almonds pass through the intestines (肠) partly undigested. The actual count is 129—a sizable difference.

So, counting calories     8     be effective for weight loss in the short term, but for most people, it eventually fails to help us lose weight and leads to food choices and eating habits that damage our health.     9     (focus) only on calories can result in too little of       10     your body really needs.

8 . Directions: Fill in each blank with a proper word chosen from the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

People worry that developments in artificial intelligence, or AI, will bring about a point in history in which AI will overtake human intelligence, thereby leading to an unimaginable revolution in human affairs. Others wonder whether we will have control over artificial intelligence or whether it will have control over us.

While this situation may not arise for hundreds of years to come, this doesn’t mean we have nothing to worry about. On the     1    , the AI products that now exist are improving faster than most people realize and are promising to basically     2     our world, though not always for the better. For now, however, they are only tools, not a competing form of intelligence. But they will     3     what work means and how wealth is created.

Unlike the Industrial Revolution and the Computer Revolution, the Al revolution is not taking certain jobs and replacing them with other jobs. Instead, it is believed that they will cause a(n)     4     elimination of jobs—mostly lower-paying jobs, but some higher-paying ones, as well.

This transformation will result in enormous     5     for the companies that develop these AI programs, as well as for the companies that adopt them. We are thus facing two developments that do not sit easily together: enormous wealth concentrated in     6     few hands and an enormous number of people out of work. What is to be done?

Part of the answer will involve educating or retraining people in tasks AI tools aren’t good at. Artificial intelligence is poorly suited for jobs involving creativity, planning and “cross-field” thinking. But these skills are     7     required for high-paying jobs, which maybe hard to retrain displaced workers to be able to do. More promising are lower-paying jobs involving the “people skills” that AI lacks: social workers, barmen, doormen-professions that require human interaction. But how many barmen does a society really need?

The solution to the problem of mass     8     will involve “service jobs of love.” These are jobs that AI cannot do, that society needs and that give people a sense of     9    . Examples include accompanying an older person to visit a doctor, helping at an orphanage and serving as a sponsor at a charity organization. The volunteer service jobs of today, in other words, may turn into the real jobs of the future.

Other volunteer jobs may be higher-paying and     10    , such as compassionate (有同情心的) medical vice providers. In all cases, people will be able to choose to work fewer hours than they do now.

9 . Hanwengong Shrine

Now we come to Hanwengong Shrine, which is beside Hangjiang river and west of Bijia mountain.     1     In the square in front of the hall, an ancient book-shaped stone is carved with two famous sayings of Han Yu on it, meaning hard work is the precondition for success, and deep thought is the guarantee of success.

In the year of A.D. 819, for some political reason, Han Yu was exiled (流放) to Chaozhou, a backland at that time. But he was not depressed by this, and he helped local people to develop education, agriculture, irrigation and release slaves.     2

The shrine was built against the mountain and divided into two parts, the front part and the back part. Now we play a small game: count the stone steps, and later I’ll tell you a secret. How many steps are there? Yes, 51 steps! Why?     3     The first time Han Yu came to Chaozhou, he was impressed by the beautiful scenery and hospitality of local people. You see that old tree? People say the more flowers in the tree, the more well-educated students are. But in Qing Dynasty, this magic tree, planted by Han Yu himself, died, so people planted this tree instead.

4     Here is one: when Han Yu was living in Chaozhou, there was a very fierce and cruel crocodile in the Hanjiang river, which was a big social harm. One day, Han Yu drafted a statement against the crocodile and made it public by the river. Incredibly, from the next day on, the crocodile was gone. Later, the statue, made of a portrait of Han Yu, was built and his words were left on the monument to mark his achievements.

A.When Han Yu came to Chaozhou, he was 51 years old.
B.Han Yu was a Confucian figure, and there are many stories about him in Chaozhou.
C.Although Han Yu’s ideas had no obvious practical effect at the time, they had a great impact on society decades later.
D.Built in the Song dynasty, the shrine is the oldest and best preserved monument to Han Yu, one of the greatest literary men in the Tang dynasty.
E.To memorize what he had contributed to the development of Chaozhou, people constructed this shrine and named him Hanwengong respectfully.
F.There are so many tourists that, to relieve the pressure on the monuments, the scenic spot requires that a maximum of 500 people visit at a time.

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。文章主要围绕父母在抚养孩子过程中应注意的问题和策略展开,提出了自己的观点和论据,阐述了父母在孩子成长过程中的重要作用和应该注意的方面。

10 . In bringing up children, every parent watches eagerly the child’s acquisition of each new skill — the first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning of reading and writing. It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child. This might happen at any stage. A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early, a young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm for life and his desire to find out new things for himself.

Parents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters. Others are severe over times of coming home at night or punctuality for meals. In general, parents’ demands and social values are as important as children’s own well-being. Therefore, parents also need to constantly observe the world and explore the unknown so as to give the children good personalized education in their growth.

As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is very important in parental teaching. To ban a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality. Also, parents should realize that “example is better than precept (训诫)”. If they are not sincere and do not practice what they say, their children may grow confused, and emotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled.

A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents’ principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment. Parents must pay more attention to their own behavior and language, passing on the right values and cognition to their children. In this way, children can grow up healthily on the right track.

1. What do parents usually do when their children are growing up?
A.Speed up their children’s learning.
B.Watch their children learn new skills.
C.Put their children into a state of isolation.
D.Make their children live on their own.
2. What’s right about parents’ being strict with their children?
A.Parents should not expect too much of them.
B.Parents should encourage them to read faster than others.
C.Parents should create as many learning opportunities as possible.
D.Parents should find a balance between being strict and leaving them alone.
3. The second paragraph mainly tells us that ______.
A.parents should be strict with their children
B.parents need to be strict with themselves
C.different parents treat their children differently
D.parents set strict limits on their children’s spending
4. In moral matters, parents should ______.
A.keep in line in words and deeds
B.demand that their children listen to them
C.know the difference between adults and children
D.consistently ensure the security of their children
