It was a few days before Christmas many years ago and it looked like it would not be a happy one for my family.

The factory that I was working at gave us a long holiday while their machinery was being repaired, that is to say, there is no need for us to go to work. In return for this, we didn't have much money.

My wife and I had managed to save some money to buy our young children some toys, but an unexpected car repair had taken most of our cash. We knew for sure that we could only afford to get one small gift for each of our children.

We arrived at the store and walked down the parking lot past people loading gifts into their cars. I saw the happiness on their faces and 1 heard them laughing and speaking happily. I envied them a bit, because it sure didn't feel like Christmas to me. We hurried into the store past old Tom, a beggar who had begged here for many years. To some extent, we had been "friends". I had always enjoyed putting something in his kettle before and he always held up his thumb to me. But today we passed him quickly with our heads down, pretending we didn't see him even though I heard clearly he was saying hello to me. I wasn't sure if I could afford gifts for my own family and I could not help others.

We searched all through the store hoping to find one thing each of our small children would like. Thankfully, we were able to get them each something sweet. We headed for the checkout and paid the bills for all the toys children selected. We found that we even had a few dollars left over.

4 . Understand your pet's body language

Body language is different depending on what sort of animal you have chosen as your pet.    1    Understanding your pet's body language will help you to be a better communicator, as you can even copy some of its movements, expressions and sounds to send your message in a way it understands.

2    If your dog isn't looking directly at you, but is looking out of the corners of its eyes so that you see a lot of the whites of the eyes, it might be about to have an aggressive outburst. If your dog is feeling stressed or aggressive, its wide eyes will be accompanied by a rigid(绷紧的)body.

●If your cat looks at you and blinks at you slowly, it's likely communicating affection.    3    For cats, closing one's eyes in the presence of another is a way to show trust. If your cat feels threatened, its tail will likely be upright; its back will likely be arched, too.

4    If your bird's pupils (   瞳孔) enlarge and shrink rapidly, this can be a sign that it's excited or greatly interested, or scared or angry.    5    Birds will shake their feathers while cleaning themselves ; if their feathers remain shaking, however, this could mean they’re unwell, in which case, take them to an animal doctor for a checkup.

A.Pets' health depends on your daily care.
B.You can do this back at your cat to show your love, too.
C.The context is important in telling which emotion it might be.
D.Birds can be quite expressive through their eyes, feathers, and voices.
E.When dogs feel stressed out or threatened, their eyes will look larger than normal.
F.Once familiar with each other's presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 续写的词数应为150 左右。

Several years ago, I traveled by train to Stockholm. I was visiting two friends who were to meet me at the train station. I stood there waiting for my first friend to arrive and in the midst of   all the hurrying passengers that Friday afternoon, I heard a weak voice; it sounded like   a   question. I turned and saw a young man standing with a white cane ( 拐 杖 ) , his suitcase by his feet.   I   approached   and   asked,“Do   you   need   help?”“Yes,”he   replied,   nodding   his   head, appearing relieved.

He had been trying for some time, unsuccessfully, to get someone’s attention. He had   missed his train home. His cell phone battery was dead, and he needed to call his mother to tell   her of the circumstances.

This young man named Mustafa, I found out, had just completed his first week at a school   for the blind. He went to school on Mondays and returned home on Fridays. Of course I helped him call his mother. I did not understand what he spoke with her on my cell phone, but I could tell the language was Swedish. Of course the next problem was finding the right train home and telling his mother the new arrival time. Yet in   this disordered   train   station, I did   not want to   miss connecting with my friend Bogdan who was on his way to the spot where we were standing.

Before I could dial the number to call Bogdan, he was suddenly already there. I described the problem and Bogdan took the young man’s arm and we were off on our adventure to help get Mustafa home. While sorting out where his home was, what train, and what time, my second friend Marcello called and wondered where we were. Soon he joined us. It happened that   Marcello speaks 12 languages.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The first time we set eyes on the beautiful dress “big Red.”father, mother and I were walking slowly through the freshly fallen snow on our way to Hubble's Hardware store on Main Street.

The colorfully decorated window display held the best toys ever and some other things. And hey were all placed pleasantly beneath   the breathtaking dress of Big Red. Mother’s   eyes were glued to the massive flame of red satin(绸缎),dotted with twinkling stars.

“My goodness,"she managed to say in dreamlike wonder."Would you just look at that dress!"Then, totally out of character, mother unexpectedly danced on the slippery sidewalk. Beneath the heavy, grey wool coat that she had worm every winter for as long as I could remember, mother lost her balance and fell clumsily. Father quickly caught her.

Her cheeks redder than usual, mother blamed dad for laughing."Oh,stop that!" she ordered, as my father swept the snow from her coat."What a silly dress to be displayed there in the window of Eaton's!" she shook her head in disbelief. "Who on earth would want such a brightly-colored dress? It is too expensive."As we continued to walk down the street, mother turned back for one more look."My goodness! You'd think they'd display something that a person could use!”

Christmas was around the corner and the red dress was soon forgotten.Mother was not the one to wish for, or spend money on,things that were not practical."There are things we need more than this,"she'd always say, or,"There are things we need more than that."

Father,on the other hand, liked to buy things whenever the budget allowed. Of course,he'd get a scolding for his occasional spending like this, but it was all done with the best intention.

On our last trip to town before Christmas,we were driving up Main Street when mother suddenly exclaimed in surprise, “Would you just look at that!"She pointed excitedly as Dad drove past Eaton's."That big red dress is gone,” she said in disbelief. “It's actually gone."

Dad looked quickly and smiled,"Yes,it is not there!”
